Title: Good quality low fat dry food?
Post by: Mymblesdaughter on October 04, 2015, 14:57:11 PM
I went to the vets with Xander last week and he has put on weight. He's gone from 5.5 to 6 kg he has a heart murmur and the vet said being overweight is a risk factor. He is a big cat so I don't think he's that much over weight but would be good if he could loose a bit. Can anyone recommend a high meat no carbs dry food that is low fat? Thanks.

He's 4. Although doing a bit of research online I think the answer is just to give him less food. So his treats are going to be cut down first! Poor lad.

I looked too and they are all much of a muchness, 20-21% fat. Does he go out? someone could be feeding him. ;D

Not the treats...................nooooooooooooooooooooo

Astro and Zoonie are 6kg each and not an ounce of fat on them

Zoonie has a heart murmur but the vet said it was nothing to worry about.

Good luck with his diet  ;D

I wouldn't worry about the fat as much as the carbs.  If you want a dry food I'd go for a low carb, grain free good quality dry such as Applaws, Thrive or Aatu.

Hmm 7+ senior - don't tell Mosi.  He'll be 10 at the end of December.  He'd be horrified to know he's considered a senior cat  :shify:

I suppose it's a bit like humans being middle aged we don't like to think we've reach it!

Thanks Susanne, he already get low carb food, he eats applaws or purizon which are mainly meat with veg. The treats are quite high in carbs and he gets about 15 a day so think that is too many. He doesn't like the pure meat treats either.

He is indoor only and will only eat dry food, I understand this is a bad combination for weight gain.
