Post by: lyndsey on January 03, 2011, 14:03:48 PM
to the attention of therasa, or to anybody who could help me......
i have 7 little kittens without there mummy due to the fact she's been out 5 days and hasn't come home. i am feeding these babys myself to the best of my ability and worry they aren't getting enough. i would be extreamly greatful for any suggestions.

Hiya,

what are you doing at present? have you some Cimicat? You'll find the guidelines on there are very good.

this should be moved to health and behaviour or cat rescue to get more replies.

also where are you based? Can you get some help from a local rescue? 7 is a lot to cope with and you will find yourself having to start the next feed as soon as finishing one.

have you contacted any local rescues, you really need help from someone who's done this before - is the mum cat your cat?

You need help feeding the little ones. I wasn't really thinking about the mum cat at this stage.
If they don't get fed properly they will not survive.

They will need feeding a proper cat replacement milk like cimicat. They need to be fed every 2 - 3 hours. The cimicat guidelines are very good for an=mounts and frequency of feeds.

What are you using to feed them? bottle or syringe? how much are they taking and how often? Have you weighed them at all.

You really should ask a local rescue to take them.

yes she's mine, she got out as i was taking bin's out thursday 30th and hasn't come home.
i have phoned around rescues but alot are closed and one place will only take afew.
i have 3 grey and 4 black, they wanted grey wants but i would rather they wasnt split up as they've lost there mum dont think splitting them up would be the right thing to do just yet.

Lyndsey, please answer my questions.

7 is a huge number for one person to bottle feed.

If your vet isn't open, you can buy proper replacement milk in Pets at Home, Either Lactol or lactol gold. The cat milk that comes in cartons is no good as it is only cows milk with the lactose reduced. Maybe a rescue will give you some if you don't have a Pets at home nearby. Hopefully you can get a proper kitten feeding bottle as well. It is also important to keep kitten upright when feeding otherwise the milk can get in their lungs. Someone else can confirm.

There are some videos here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLBWwY8PG_g

You need to wipe their bottom gently with a piece of cotton wool dampened with warm water after they have been fed to make them go to the toilet. The mother would usually do this by licking them. They need to be fed every couple of hours or so.

 :welcome:

You may find mum has gone missing because she has come into season again, apparently this can happen soon after the birth. Please get her neutered as soon as she returns, as the last thing you need is another batch! Good luck with the little ones.

Where abouts are you Lindsey?

The other important thing to do is make sure they are pooing and peeing, which you have to stimulate them to do by wiping their bottoms with damp cotton wool and that they are warm enough.  Also, make sure they do not suckle each other too much as they can damage each other.

Have spoken to Lyndsey at length this evening and it sounds as if she is doing a great job so far.She will be bringing babies to me tomorrow morning as she is fairly local;have also said that when mum turns up we will help with neutering.
