vet has diagnosed an abscess between Trigger's dewclaw and first toe, and has opened it a little - not much other than blood came out, and if it gets bigger, or doesn't get any smaller, he's to go back to have it lanced
as vet was about 12, I do wonder a bit though about this diagnosis - no smell, no heat, no apparent pain when squeezed, no obvious pus and certainly no fighting - given Trigger's history of liquid-filled cysts, I have my suspicions this is not a straightforward abscess - though lancing it will reduce it anyway
anyone had experience of an abscess with so few abscess-like symptoms?

No abcesses I know have all normal symptoms and need abs.
I so hate young inexperienced vets and sounds like a wrong diagnosis to me, hope convenia jab been given cos if an abcess thats the thing.

yes, convenia jab given and I am supposed to keep squeezing it to keep hole open - which is OK in that it doesn't seem to bother him, but then surely it should if there is pus in there

Does he lick it cos that will keep it open

Hmmmm. Doesnt sound too much like an abcess, does it? How's he been overnight?

looks a bit smaller this morning - gave it a very vigorous squeeze which didn't bother him at all, but got nothing out so I think the puncture made yesterday by the vet has healed up - I have a lift with a friend for tomorrow's provisional appointment for lancing, which on the face of it should be at least postponed, but as it would probably mean seeing a different vet I think I will take him anyway - having another convenia shot might be all that's required for now
if anything he's perkier than usual, though as he's one of the world's most laid back cats, that doesn't mean a great deal!

Sounds like he's definitely moving in the right direction, bless him. I can only imagine how uncomfortable it must be to have your paw squeezed when it's saw to begin with. :-:

Glad that the swelling is going down :) I think the convenia jab is a slow release AB that lasts two weeks so, if the swelling continues to reduce, not sure I would bother with another vet visit esp as your vet is hardly just round the corner. As always though, you know him well Kay and a cat's mum always knows best.

only vet worth seeing takes leave during the school holidays - I've cancelled tomorrow's lancing, but rebooked for Monday - I'm coming round to the idea it is yet another of his squishy cysts, but causing more problems than the others because it's situated where his foot bends, and his dewclaw grows,so might need to be removed under an op
what is for sure is that he is absolutely well, and feels no pain, so from what you lot say it is definitely not an abscess

Trigger is off this pm to the quality Carmarthen vet who arranged his HT treatment - a friend is taking me but the practice now has its own ambulance, which I can use for future visits - I can't tell you what a difference this will make to me, though it will of course cost - not only will vet journeys be easy to organise, but I can use a vet who doesn't employ a succession of newly-qualified kids who are gone again in a year
Trigger says thanks for asking - his lump has gone down a lot, and I'm pretty sure it's one of his usual squishy cysts, which got some kind of knock or infection which made it swell up more - it could happen again though so may have to be surgically removed - am 90% certain it was not an abscess though, and it concerns me that a vet could make such a mistake - but will see what is said at the other practice - I may well have to eat humble pie so better shut up now ;)

the lump had all but disappeared by the time I saw the second vet - just some thickening of the skin left, so not even one of his cysts - put down now to an infection, not an abscess, probably caused by my clumsy attempt to cut the dew claw, and the convenia cleared it up
but £28 for peace of mind is cheap really, isn't it :agree:

So pleased this resolved itself without intervention. And yes - cheap at twice the price. :)
