Awww very best of wishes to tom, give him a hug from me..poor little guy but as kelly said worth while in the long term..Hugs to you aswell, i think i'd struggle tremendously to see my child going through such pain (fingers crossed i never have to)

I do hope we can find a maine coon for him aswell.

Gald Everything went well now you can start the long road to getting better. I had to have alot of surgey done on my feet,legs,hipsand back when I was younger so I sort of know what he is going though. Tell him though its probaly very painful now it does get better and the results are amazing.I really hope we can find him the perfect maine coon I am still looking for him as I think that one would really cheer him up at this time and I know how a cat can heal most anything.

Tom had his surgery on Thursday afternoon and now has what looks like a big Meccano set built around his foot, with aobut 25 wires going in and out of his leg, foot and toes. He's in pain but has morphine in a pump, and we're hoping that tomorrow we can get him out of bed and into the shower!

All went well: his foot is all ready straighter, and longer, which is the objective. I am looking forward to the next week passing, though, as this is really hard on him. He asked if we could take Tink the cat in to visit but the hospital said no... there are allergic children on the ward, so it can't be done. Never mind. She wouldn't have liked it, anyway.

Meanwhile, a huge thanks to all of you for your support. You've been very, very kind and I really appreciate it.

The other one posted was not good with dogs, and we've got two. Albeit elderly, cat-friendly dogs but still, dogs.

Don't feel bad about posting that link. It was worth a shot and I could have got it wrong, the person might very well be rehoming her cats because of horrible circumstances. The pony free for a good home could very well underline that. It's probably because I'm a nasty suspicious thing that I didn't go for it!

I'll keep on looking, and will keep you all posted. Thanks again for all the helpful suggestions. It's fabulous the response I get here.

I Googled the phone number and there have been a handful of ads placed, for cats and a pony that's free to a good home. I phoned, and there are just two cats available: both are for sale for a few hundred pounds and I was pressed to decide quickly as there were lots of other people interested. So the hunt continues.

I'm going to have a quiet talk with Tom when he's home from hospital and discuss the whole rescue thing. He knows what the ins and outs are: we used to run a peafowl rescue place here, and our four cats and two dogs are all rescues (two of the cats came from a breeder who kept them in puppy crates their whole lives: the breeder was strongly encouraged to hand all his cats to a rescue organisation and ended up dumping them on a vet's surgery, amongst other places). As his very best friend was a moggy rescue I suspect we'll end up going that way, but despite mysefl I'm still going to try for a MC for a while as he's so very keen on them.

Thanks also for the continuing best wishes for Tom: he's fine, seems remarkably undisturbed about the whole thing (his only concern is that he's going to miss Dr Who on the Saturday night he's in hospital, but I have secret plans to take a TV in for that), and he's even being nice to his little brother who IS worried about the whole procedure.

We've considered buying a kitten (or two!) for him, but can't get over the knowledge that there are thousands of cats out there in rescue centres just pining for loving homes. Lulu, Thomas's best friend (a DSH tortie who died just over a year ago) came from the CPL in north London, and was an absolute star. Because of her, and all the other cats we've had over the years, we'll not buy from a breeder. Not until there are no cats left at rescue centres at all.

Good luck with finding what you're after, but if you've contacted the breed rescues and they have nothing suitable then I guess you're faced with the chioce of buying a pedigree maine coon/NFC from a breeder or trying to find a look a like moggy from a shelter. If you don't want to buy a pedigree direct from a breeder (and bear in mind that if you really want a maine coon someone still has to breed them for one to end up in a shelter) then you may find a cat with similar characteristics in a rescue.

The only thing I would stress is if you see a maine coon advertised anywhere please check it out thoroughly and make sure it's a bona fida rescue or a reputable breeder and not a backyard breeder. However you feel about breeding in general, backyard breeders are the worst and don't need any encourgement.

All the best to Tom for his op too - hope it all goes well and isn't too painful for him.

Well, I don't think I'm going to have any luck with the Chapel House Persian place--I've emailed and phoned and had no reply and I suspect that page mentioning Maine Coon kittens is an old one, as CHP seems to not take in many cats now. Never mind. I'll carry on searching and if anyone hears of anything interesting do let me know.

Try looking at all the maine coon breeder sites as they sometimes have older maine coons and have links to other breeders that need to rehome one. also try phoning the following if you haven't already and getting put on their lists.

And also try Norwegian forest cat club as they are silimar to maine coons 01903 784235

Last but not least try all ped cat rescues as even if say its a ragdoll rescue they still get in other breeds. Good luck do let us all know when you get one. hope all goes well with your sons op.

Thanks to all of you for the many replies. As well as the replies to this thread I've had emails from several of you, wishing Tom the best of luck, and I feel quite overwhelmed. You have all been so very kind. Thank you, so very much.

First, a quick update on how we are all getting on. Tom is still ridiculously cool about the whole thing. I'm so proud of him. He knows it's going to be difficult at best and painful, and he's so pragmatic about it all. He's about to start a procedure that will take at least a year to complete, perhaps two, and he just shrugs his shoulders and gets on with it. Bless him.

Here's what things are like for us. Today, in all the sunshine, we put up the boys' trampoline and Tom got in lots of bouncing--he's not going to be able to go on it for a year, after next Thursday, so he's really making the most of it. Then he spotted a sheep in the pond about 500 yards away, and so we raced over and dragged it out (it took me and the two boys and Tom's rope to get it out) and we did some elementary CPR on the sheep, which probably didn't need anything other than rest, but still...). Then we came in and ate pizza, and now we're eating the last of last year's apples from Grandad, and watching the Simpsons.

As you can imagine, it's boy-heaven here, with or without foot-frames and Maine Coons, I just want it to be even better. As a veteran of animal rescue of all sorts, I can't imagine buying a cat from a breeder. It feels immoral to me. I'd feel dirty if I did it. Even if it meant making Tom happy. For Tom's sake I almost wish I felt different, but I don't. Meanwhile, there's no shortage of pedigree cats available: I have a friend who runs a pedigree rescue, and she's got british blue kittens, youngish bengal cats, and all sorts of siamese and oriental cats available (let me know if anyone fancies helping out with any of those!). It's just the right Maine Coon that is in short supply.

Tish the Maine Coon looks gorgeous but she's apparently suited only to a home as a single cat, and we have four all ready. Bums. I'll contact the rescue and see what they think but I suspect it's unlikely. Meanwhile, give me a shout if you hear of anything else around. I'd love to know. As would Thomas. And thanks again for your help and support. It's amazed me, and meant more than you can possibly know.

i can understand your choice for the rescue route i just think if you come to a dead end tom would be more deserving than most in your only choice was to buy him the breed of cat he wants so badly..

poor poppet i do feel sorry for him (altho im sure he doesnt feel sorry for himself LOL) i would presume this op is going to be a rather painful one ?

Thanks for the good wishes. Tom's being so great about it, we can't do anything other than be OK too. We're very lucky to have him. He was wondering today if he'd be able to trampoline with the thing on his foot. He won't be slowed down by it for too long.

Thanks for the good wishes, Lyn. All our cats and dogs are rescue ones, and Tom is brilliant with them--they cuddle up with him more readily than with anyone, and he loves them. He just so likes the MCs, and I'm feeling worried about him, and you get the rest!

i cant help you other than to say have you tried the actual mainecoon/nfc sites / rescue organisations etc

I hope you do find what you are looking for but if you were to take on a rescue one beware perhaps there is a reason it has been put up for rehoming (perhaps been used for breeding and not very well handled or socialised etc), i only mention this as i'd love your son to have a non timid human loving puss because it sounds like he deserves it. If you cant find what you are looking for then i'd just buy him one anyway and i am sure the cat will be his best friend and helping him cope with his procedures and speed up the healing process and definately boost his morale

Finally best of luck to your son and i hope he's out kicking a ball with his mates asap

(my 61/2 year old son however couldnt imagine a worse punishment than being made to play footie

)

Our son goes into hospital next week for surgery to correct his club foot: he's 11, had surgery when he was a baby, but needs more extensive work now. He's going to have an external fixator frame put on, which he'll have for about five months, then a plaster cast for about two months, a splint for a year after, and at some time surgery to correct the soft tissue problems with his big toe, too!

He's a fabulous boy with a definite way with animals, particularly cats. He's going to be at home for quite a long time over the next few months, and as he's spent the last six months longing for a Maine Coon, we thought it was probably the right time to welcome another cat into our household.

While there are lots of kittens available from breeders, we don't want to go that route for obvious reasons. We've been in contact with the breed society rescue people since the autumn, and they have nothing suitable. So, if anyone knows of a Maine Coon or NFC which is looking for a new home, I'd be grateful if you could let me know. We have two sons (both cat-friendly), four cats which all tend towards the timid, and two elderly dogs. We live in the middle of nowhere, and can offer a very cat-friendly home. We're near Sheffield, but are willing to travel for the right cat. Thank you!
