After my recent dealings with my own vet practice (who are normally excellent) I would personally ask them to refer Mango to a specialist  (where I am it falls under University of Liverpool Small Animal Hospital).  If the specialist says its part of her natural 'setup' then fair enough.  Fabian's visits are covered by my insurance company but they really are the experts and have all the facilities and experience to give you piece of mind that you know what is wrong with her.

I personally will not be accepting a 'it is what it is' explanation again - I did that 2 years ago with Fabes and look where we are now!

i wish mango had a proper little nose 

her breathings not too bad today , i hope our new kitten cheers her up , we get it on the 7/7/07 , mango likes to play when she can breath and moomin doesnt like to play so im hoping  luna the kitten will cheer her up

My little Persian Amber sometimes has trouble breathing but never anything too bad.  We rescued her when we lived in Germany and over there they have banned the American Persian breed because of the health problems.  Bina my Persian who is now at the bridge was bred in Germany but she was a European Persian and had a proper little nose.

Show cats are as subject to fashion as much as anything else, unfortunately.  The standard is interpreted by judges and if you get a judge awarding wins to cats of a certain type (such as the extreme face in persians) then everyone wants their cats to look like that.  But I think Mango's problems are a result of bad breeding rather than because she's a persian.  Not all persians have breathing problems.

i have mentioned her nreathing probs to the breeder before and she just says thats the way they are and its normal but its not

i bet shes not the only one in the litter like this and would like to get to know but cant

the breeder used to ring every so many weeks and scince i complained to her about mango been a LH EXOTIC and not a persian and she denied it so i rang the studs breeder her friend and she agreed and said she would exlaine to her , i also complained to gccf regarding that  and she hasnt rung me scince
at least iv voiced my oppionion

it is her fault mark cause is not takinge into consideration the quality of life and health the cats will have and good breeders end up been classed with the same brush

candice and gillians cats are all ok regarding breathing so mangos breeder is obviousley crap
she also said theres no such thing as a LH exotic no such thing as asthma hayfever in cats

it wont be outlawed mark...its actually the gccf that set the standards and the ultra extremes are getting better points so therefore breeders are breeding their cats to suit.

there are many breeds that have changed considerably from the old standard..siamese now can have a very different face from the "traditional" type..however this doesnt cause them a problem (as far as i know)

its the same with bulldogs and flat faced dogs..kennel club encouraging the extreme with terrible lives for the animal who basically fights for every breath it takes..(well the kennel club certainly USED to encourage this, perhaps they have changed but i doubt it) just as in shows dogs with tails instead of being docked werent being placed or were put down the line..that might hopefully have changed now.

Mark, decent Persian breeders try and avoid health issues like this in their cats - look at Gillians and Candyshandys. Cosmic has had lots of issues with Mango's breeder in the past, so does sound like she isn't one of the best breeders. Sadly, Persians are one of hte breeds that are being bred more and more extreme, so whether this causes more health issues I dont know.

I'm curious as to how its the breeders fault. Are there certain types of cat (ie facial shape) they shouldn't mix?

If this is a breed problem surely it should be outlawed. I saw a program once where they said that dalmations who didn't have the right patterning were given away or killed. Also if they were deaf. The dark side of pedigree breeding.

Aww, poor Mango - but as Gill says, it isn't your fault, it is the breeder (can you do anything about that, ie a complaint or something?) who is at fault, she is lucky that she is with someone who cares enough to try and sort it, that isn't the case for all cats.

no mark as far as i am aware there is nothing at can be done..its down to damned awful bad breeding.

the idea is for the nose to actually go back into the skull rather than out like the normal shape..

its not just the nose shape obviously but the whole skull that is basically "deformed"

i thought about a little nose job but how can you give a persian a nose ??? and i thought about putting plastic tubes in her nosrils to open air way

Can they not have some kind of septoplasty? - Surely it would be covered on insurance as its a medical thing. I had it done last year and its not painful - just feels uncomfortable until the swelling goes down.

mango couldnt breath properly last night , i was up with her all night it was the worst she has been so far . Her nose was like it was vacumed

i went to the vets with her again and he said that after all the tests he thinks it is just down to her anatomy ( her broken nose and none existant nostrils  )
he said that the only think that helps her is the steriod inject ( anti immflammitary long lasting ) it has given her 6 wks relief in the past and that she may be better in winter but worse in  spring summer

hes right , the only thing that does work is the steriod  and she still struggles then , shes only 17 month and has a life of this . i feel so sorry for her  and guilty persians are beutiful but dont deserve there fate , she is my best friend and i feel i have let her down

she is breathing a little easier now but grunting , poor sweetheart
