Title: Mix feelings, your opinion please - Please send positive vibes for Millie RTA (Sad news- RIP xx)
Post by: pappilon on July 29, 2009, 14:08:33 PM
Ok, thats what happened yesterday. I went to mayhew to feed the garden cats and  also to ask them about fostering not for me but for Miriam here so i could let her know. I asked for rehoming officer cos i know her and we started walking towards the garden and i asked her about fostering .She said she has 2 cats right now which she would really like to get to a foster home and out of the pen. One was Ben which i met on their opening day he was where all the other cats are a lovely b/w with eye problem and its been there for a very long time and not coping well cos he is depressed :( and then we got to a different section and she said check this pen, i couldnt see anything except the igloo bed i went in and next thing some thing spat at me i just jumped back and thought wow what was that :-:  The cat in there was called Milli/y and apparently came from a home with too many cats , she came with her sibbling which i think were rehomed but she was never handeled and the officer said that no one will adopt her like this and they dont know what to do with her :( I asked her age and there was nothing on her paper but she said she think she is 1 or 2 years only her name and weight 2.6 kilogram on her paper , i didnt even get to see her i walked forward and could see her eyes really scared :'( but she was so deep in the bed i didnt want to scare her, poor little one .
Well i hink you can guess the rest, at the moment i dont want to adopt a cat its just too early after loosing Boy and Phoebe and i am not sure about my plans for future but i know for sure i need to sort out the flat small work and not working right now so home most of the times.I know i cant save all the cats with problem but i kept thinking she is a young cat and if i foster her she may come out of her shell and get a chance to get a good home one day, but then i feel really guilty by bringing another cat so soon.
I told Lucy i would take her and had a call this morning saying the vet is going to examine her today to see if she is fit and well she is basicly like a feral you cant approach her, an i dont even know how she looks like. Am i doing the right thing, i have mix feeling but i cant get her out of my head those eyes ,and if i can help her. Please be honest and say what you think. Thankyou
Oh yes and i did ask about fostering  which i am going to pm meriam and let her know.
Sorry for the long post and the way i typed, just nervous. :innocent:

I dont think you are being disloyal to Boy or Phoebe, they knew you best and Im sure they would be so proud of you helping this little girl!

Im all for it Pav, I think its a fantastic idea and if anyone can change her chances and outlook on life then you will be the one to do it!  ;)

Afraid I am very biased as I need a cat as soon as Kocka had gone to the Bridge and of course ferals are very hard to deal with and even Teresa has Wilma and  Monica who are still feral.

I think for you to take on a young cat on a fostering basis only............means it can go back if you cant cope or it has medical problems.....is a great idea and once safely in a home by itself it may come out of its shell. But its a big challenge and lots or ignoring, no touching and general patience will be needed.

You must check their fostering conditions though and they must be responsible and look after any health care she may need and be willing to take her back if you wish them too.

You must be very strict with yourself and ensure that your big heart does not agree to all the costs etc but I think little scared feral may be good for you  ;D

As others have said you are such a kind person and have lots of love to give so I think you should go for it, you can help this little one and she can help you

I had chosen the boys within a week of losing Tiggy, it didn't mean that I didn't love or miss her just that I had room in my heart for all of them and I think you have room in your heart for Boy, Phoebe and any others that may need your help

I think you should go for it sweetheart

You're not being disloyal the memory of Boy and Phoebe, you're opening your heart and home to another furbabe in need, your love will help her, and in turn her progress will help you, you have so much to give

Funnily enough, this is something I've been discussing with J, I know Maxy boy is still with us, but you can't help talking about what happens afterwards, and we've already considered the idea of fostering as well.

You will know in your heart if you're doing the right thing, and to me, it sounds like you are  xxxx

Pav your heart is too big  I think fostering is a great idea and having met you I know that you have the love and patience to give to a timid cat, however I also feel that Milly may not be the right cat for you, I think you need a cat to love you right now, not a feral who may well reduce you to tears each day because she is either too scared to come out of hiding or climbing the walls in fear or attempting her escape through the first open window; no I`m not trying to put you off, merely trying to get you to think a bit more because I think we all know whatever you foster will be for life
I think you have the patience and love to give this little one but right now you are grieving so please take time to think of the worst things a feral cat could do eg. escape and ask yourself could you cope if she did because I really feel you couldnt cope with anymore pain.
Sorry if I seem to be putting you off, I`m not, I just care enough to ask you to consider your own needs too

Interesting - Teresa's post makes a lot of sense, I hadnt thought of it from that point of view and probably would have said go for it too. Whatever you decide Pav (although I think you've already decided  ;) ) we'll all be here to support you
Title: Re: Mix feelings, your opinion please.
Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on July 29, 2009, 16:50:53 PM
Yes agree with Gillian cos the one thing that hurt me when Misa and Sasa arrived was that neither of them are lap cats and Sasa didnt like being touched and Misa was still suffering from his bad start in life. Both of them still do suffer from that, and Misa will never be a lap cat but he is the most affectionate cat when he is on the desk next to me.

Before the birmans he was even more affectionate cos he would come on my bed every night to do some needing and sucking before sleeping in the bedroom and when it was dark, Sasa would also come and sleep up there.

Of course all that has changed now cos the bedroom belongs to the birmans and the only lap cat I have is Franta.

However I think you have made your mind up too  ;D

For one Pav try not to panic!!! She will be laying low somewhere and I guess she will be more used to playing the waiting game than you!  ;)

Id put the food, water litter tray out as you would of....then get yourself sorted, cuppa and some food maybe? Put a radio on low (music) then just go on as you would....she may not come out as this is very early days for her, but I know she will be aware of you!

If you had a room planned for her to go into for starters then maybe just leave that room door open, after checking you are not locking her in anywhere else!

All will be okay Pav Im sure!  :Luv:

There is a lot of new smells, sounds sights for her to digest....

Pav right now she is too scared to make a dash for the outdoors, dont even try to find her  it will only scare her more, put food near place you left her, check all windows are closed for your own peace of mind then put your feet up and relax, a little quiet music or tv for background noise may help you both.   This is all quite normal for the start of a beautiful relationship with a feral.

Pav dont even think about opening the door, she IS in the house, ferals have superb hiding capabilities. Please trust me on this one and stop beating yourself up  You have my no. if you need to talk

I am betting she is inside somewhere , in the smallest darkest place she can find. If you do go out Pav make sure every door and window is closed and the space that leads to the front door has been totally searched cos you dont want to come back and then she runs through the front door

Blimey.....no wonder you're freaking out. Seriously, my cats are far from feral and they have hiding in a house so I don't know where they are down to an art.

I'd think she found somewhere she felt safe and hankered down. Big deep breaths.

Pav,  she will be indoors,   just do as T says,  relax and stop worrying,   from experience we have had cats hide in all sorts of places,   you know about Hazzle Dazzle hiding up the chimney,  well we looked for him for two days and for two days he had been sitting on a ledge in the chimney,  he was only coming down when no one was about,  he only gave himself away by weeing !,   Daisy Doo Doo got in to a opening at the base of our kitchen cupboards that you would never imagaine cat could ever get into and the kittens where always up to no good round the back of the toilet,  in drawers etc.

She will be in your flat honey dont panic

Like everyone else has said - I'm sure she's still indoors, somewhere! Some of mine have hiding places indoors that I still havent worked out, because there have been occasions when I have looked everywhere, I mean everywhere,  for one of them - all possible places, and then sometime later they just appear - like out of thin air, and I still have no idea from where!

I agree Pav. You have done the right thing (for the cat's sake) with your big heart. Cats really can find the oddest places to hide. When we moved here, we were convinced the removal men had allowed Clapton to escape. We searched frantically for ages until.....

Thats exactly right Mark  ;D

I had to look for Kocka in the house so many times before the vets and I just couldnt find her but she was there, in places that seemed too small and that one thought she wouldnt be in.

You just tend to not see these places but the cats do.

I said to Pav earlier that noone would help that cat more than her it is just an unfortunate thing which could easily happen to anyone.  Hopefully the cat will be in the house (Byron has been missing hours and we've found her in drawers and all odd places) but even if not, not to beat herself up about it  Pav xxx

I have "lost" Rossi several times in my house and she is a friendly loving little girl but if she decides she is gonna hide she is amazingly good at it.

Good luck in finding her and fingers crossed you are able to reassure her that people can be very nice xxxx

Pav is home, she's sitting in the house and just waiting for her to come out. I've assured her that the window was not open wide enough for the little one to go out. Pav is right, the flat is small but the little one is somewhere in there. Pav is just having a hard time convincing herself of this, and is beating herself up about this.  As you can imagine she's devestated right now thinking the worst so I think she just needs to sit quietly and wait for the little one to show herself.

I can well understand how you are feeling atm Pav and can only hope that little girl takes pity on you soon and at least puts your mind at rest that she's still inside.

I can't see your original post on this thread atm but think you said she came from a house with too many cats?  How did she behave towards other cats in the rescue?  You'll probably all shoot me for this suggestion but our Billy is about the "wildest" cat we've had and he so needs another cat for company.  He sticks to Noni and Billy alternately like glue.  I just wonder if a more stable cat friend (hopefully a lap cat) would be a good idea for you both assuming you decide to carry on with fostering her Pav.

I'm another one that needs the distraction of homing another cat when I "lose" one but perhaps a lone feral might be too much of a handful when you are grieving a loss

Do not beat yourself up Pav

I know its really hard but just go about your normal things and then go to bed,,,,,leaving food and a tray out of course......I bet most of us are willing to bet that Catty will have eaten during the night and gone back into hiding.

Misa used to come out for stroke , eat and then pull himself back under thr recliner and I swear to you there was only a couple of inches for my big Misa to get under but he managed it for weeks .  :)

I hope you have had a good nights sleep Pav and that you have found she has eaten and used the litter tray overnight. I too have managed to 'lose' cats in the house, I quickly learnt never to look at a place and say it is too small for a cat to get into, cos they can. It is totally normal for a nervous cat to hide, but at least your flat is small, so she can't get too far.

There is no sign of her :( I sat upstairs in the bedroom all night in total darkness, ususally leave a light on at nights but i put everything off hoping she comes out and checked downstairs every few hours nothing has been touched is 15 hours now and she hasnt used the tray and the food or water so she cant be here :( I went out at 6 am looking in peoples backgardens the one i could get access to and thought if i am out she may come out, i am so tired cried all night . i need to get few hours sleep and then maybe need to go to mayhew or call them and say what happened, the thing is i dont know what happened.Today is 1 month since i lost Boy and a week since Phoebe and i feel really down right now.
:'( :'( I need to get some sleep. Thankx everyone.

Aww, Pav honey, i really feel for you. It is still early days and not really that long for her to have not eaten or drunk. What I found with my nervous adult cat was that he actually preferred it not to be totally dark, I used to put a T-light on for him, and he seemed happier, so maybe a light on tonight will help her. I am sure she will still be in your house

Pav it can take longer, when we had Matty here he didn't eat until the next morning and never touched the tray and he wasn't that nervous.  Tons of  for you and hoping everything turns out well but whatever has happened please stop blaming yourself now and take care of you xxx

Pav I can only echo what everyone else has said, I regularly loose my cats in the house (the garden is catproofed so I am always worried they have escaped) but they always turn up somewhere in the house, no matter how small your flat the cat is smaller and they can get into all sorts of places, also when I got Tilly home she didn't use the tray for 24 hours, I was worried she would burst!  hope you managed to get some rest

Hope you get some much needed sleep Pav as that wont help being tired!

I remember my cats going missing in the house...He ended up in the bed settee, had managed to get in but could not get out! Another one we had the plumber out and he had the bath panel off, stupid man put the panel back on with one of my cats hid underneath the bath!

Cats are masters of hide and seek when they choose! I do hope you get some relief soon as the thought of you going through this on your own is unbearable!  :Luv:

Cats can hide in the most odd places so do keep looking in the house and try to be calm when you do it (I know its easier said than done).

When we adopted Smoke she hid under the wardrobe for more than 24 hours before I moved her into our spare room, she didn't use the litter box the whole time even though it was right next to the wardrobe.

Fingers crossed she comes out soon.

I agree with what everybody else has said , sometimes it can take 2 days before they touch the litter tray and a long time before they eat. Just renew the food and stop looking, get some sleep she is probably watching you.

I would contact the Mayhew and tell them what has happened and see if they have a trap that you can set, just in casae she is outside. I still believe she is inside though

You must act normally within the flat and pretend she is not there, she will sense your stress and that will keep her hidden.

I agree too. If it's any consolation, we had a major panic when we adopted The Munchkin. First morning he was no where to be seen. We knew he couldn't have gone out because the cat flap was locked, but I was really beginning to believe he'd somehow broken it open. We looked everywhere. I was frantic. Eventually, many stressful hours later, we found him- he'd got into a tiny space between the back of the kitchen cupboards and the boiler. I still don't know how he squeezed in with his enormous tummy! Of course, then we panicked in case he was stuck- we had visions of having to demolish the kitchen. We eventually tempted him out with cat milk and chicken (thankfully he loves his grub) but were in a state. I'll bet you anything she's in the flat somewhere. Hard as it is, try to chill out- she'll appear eventually.

Do you have any pilchard in tom sauce or maybe some tuna in Pav, some nice smelly fish should do the trick!

Place it near the last place you saw her, not out in the open though as that would put her off....Dont forget that radio and maybe add a light tonight as atleast then she can see there is no immediate danger for her!

Still thinking of you Pav, and still have a very strong feeling she is in your flat!  ;) :Luv:

Sadly quite a big cat can get through that size gap and Kocka who was a smallish cat about the size of a birman broke into my flat through the  little window at the top in my bathroom......took me ages to find out how she was getting in.

I hope that she is still in the house and you have also been in touch with Mayhew, who can loan you a trap just incase she did get out.

Thnking of you Pav

THis is Kittybabe (Ruth) here. Millie is now safe and sound. She was behind the washing machine watching Pav turn the house up side down and probably giggle. Naturally she's scared but she has a nice hiddey hole there and food a plenty with water. So all is well. We've left her in the kitchen and Pav is havin a small weeping fit of joy.  ;D

Thanks everyone for the PMs to both Pav and I.

Pav so glad she has been found nothing like a feral to mess up your life and your home also they are very good at getting you to block up every hole and place you think they can be = there will be more hidey holes you just don't know about them

Our Sam is off in to the big wide family room so can comisterate with your Millie! ;D

It shows how little i know about cats after spending 43 years with them :innocent:
I have to go and have my soup now and atleast i can get some sleep tonight . Thankyou    to every one here.
And i want Phoebe and Boy to know that i havent forgotten them, i just wanted to help this little one so she gets the chance to have a better life and start than they had , if only some one had helped them when they were young.x

Oh Pav I'm so happy that Millie has been found .... ... I must admit I did think the chances of her managing to find an open window and get out of it in that short time was very unlikely as most scared kitties will just move like lightning to the first dark, small space they can find.  At least now you know where one of her hidey holes will be so the next time she vanishes (which I'm sure she will) you will know where to start looking for her  ;)

I'm sure Boy and Phoebe are watching you both and sniggering to themsleves, but I bet they will also get a message to Millie somehow to let her know what a great mummy you are and that she will be safe and loved with you  :Luv2:

So pleased she has been found -went to bed thinking about her last night.
They all can find hiding places when they need to and sometimes no matter how hard we look , they have hidden well !!!!
Winston had me in tears one hot summers night - i saw him near the front gate and by the time i had got outside he had literally vanished into thin air -in less than 2 minutes !!!!   I shouted him for ages (10pm still light and very warm night) , walked round the estate and fields  and back home 3 times , went back again through a cornfield up to my waist , fell in some barb wire and cut all my leg ( had shorts on !) , got home bleeding , filthy from the dust and no he still wasn''t there ( now 1am ) i am now sat outside on the door step in tears - got in the car and drove right off where i live to the road 1 mile away , opening the widow and calling him - still nothing .
Went home sat back on the door step wondering where else to look as had been everywhere -now 2am !!!- walked back round our few gardens with the torch , shone it in the shadows of peoples gardens right near the fences - 3 doors away in the shadows -one sleepy ginger head looks up and meows !!!!
I was so happy , bloody , and filthy and crying with him in my arms - all that time he was 3 doors away and i had looked there first !

   for Pav

Have to say I'm not impressed with the Mayhew here. I've dealt with lots of ferals and there's no way I'd turn an adult feral straight from a shelter pen out into a strange house with an inexperienced tamer... it's a miracle it would ever be seen again!  If she was behaving like that in a confined space, what were the Mayhew expecting her to do when give the freedom of a whole flat??  :shify:

CAT77's website has some excellent advise for winning a feral's confidence. We are also here.

Meantime, just carry on about your business for the next few days/weeks. Put food and water down, and a litter tray and hopefully puss will use it. Try not to force an interaction and dig puss out of her chosen refuge... the poor mite has a lot to come to terms with.  Best try to ignore her really...  :innocent:

Thankx Ruth, its nice to know that she showed some interest to the toys and catnip, but sadly she didnt use the tray for her poo, she did it next to the tray so she must be really stressed. I see if she does it again or it was an accident.

Yvone she is not out from behind the W.M but as i am typing i can hear her eating so thats good i guess.

she may have gone into the tray and let her bottie hang over the edge - I would put newspaper under and around the tray, and think about a covered one - but no flap as that would maybe be too much for her at this stage

I was so interested reading this post. At the end of May I adopted two feral eight month old kittens. Jasmine and Junior. I let them out in the house. Junior hid behind my sons bed and Jasmine behind the sofa. Within two days of me lying on the bed patting Junior and talking to him he was coming out and purring and letting me stroke him. Jasmine was a different kettle of fish - a couple of times she hid in spaces so small and secluded that I couldn't find her and was anxious that she may have gone out. The first time she squeezed behind a desk and the second time hid behind the dryer. Then she started to hide behind the sofa and I used to take food to her and talk to her. Sometimes she had such a sad look in her eyes and was very scared. She used to hiss at me.  One day however, she started purring and now is out all the time, goes up and down stairs, loves the other cats, eats in the kitchen and loves to be cuddled. She is still a bit nervy but no one would ever believe she had been feral. I can't believe it took such a little time for them to come round. Here are some pictures of them both. I am so delighted. They are beautiful. Junior has become an old silly wanting to be picked up and cuddled and Jasmine just loves to be petted and talked to.

Aww they are gorgeous :Luv: :Luv: I think maybe Jasmine and Junior were born to a feral mum out side but then rescued by the rescue home, i think in cases like this if the people start handeling them young then they have more chance of coming around than millie case which was born indoor but never handeled by people for one year, but then the positive thing is Millie is still young so hopefully with time she comes around.

I think you did a wonderful thing to take the feral kitties, its so rewarding when you hear the first purr and then cuddles. :Luv2: x

Pav we have Miss Cissy who is 15 and a feral older lady she now after a year lets me stroke her head whilst she is eating her breakfast, Miss Gracie another older lady had only 3 years with us but became an old dribble chops and had indoor out door privilages

We also adopted Lima and Clio who were aged 11 months with no human contact took 3 years for Cloio to turn and her first purr made up for all the previous hisses and Lima her brother hates women but after 5 years decided to share the couch with me both of them will be 10 in September and are wonderful tabby darlings

Time and love is what they need = both sides need to learn how to trust - I wore a lot of catfood with Ace he used to lunge at us all claws flashing he is now a swwet boy but doesn't allow any touching but most folks think he is lovely he is not just a lap cat fortunately we have nicer ones than him but he is first in the queue when I chop up the breakfast saucer treat!

I took Blackie in a couple of years ago at the age of almost 5 and he was that nervous he would just toilet on the spot, luckily his favourite place was laying in the litter tray!

Gradually he has slowly come round to being able to look at you and not mess him self, I have to say that the other cats have helped me also, showing him that I am not to be feared...

Its a long road Pav but the outcome is overwhelming and makes the long road all worth while!  :Luv:

Hope you have had a good day with her, I personally wouldnt bother with the T/D PAv.
Dawn - diet can help with gingivitis, if you read Dr Addie's site there are good tips - hypoallergenic foods can help a lot, Classic cat food really can help, Sam's gums stopped being red within a few days of eating it, and Applaws can also help

Millie, comes out of her hiding when i go to bed, i leave small amounts of food and treats all over the flat so she starts from downstairs and i heard her on friday night running around and doing her claws on the carpet and in the morning i could see her fur on my black carpet where she spends time enjoying the stinkies and cigar from the shop :Luv: The best part was last night after having some wet food left by my bedroom door she just came in to the room and i could see her little head looking up and checking the bed , it was dark but we could see each other , then she just sat there and started cleaning her self and i thought that's a good sign because after having the food she could have just run back down. She did stay for a while and then some one out side slammed the front door and she ran downstairs.
Ok , now i need some advise :innocent:  What i am concern is that she stays in hiding and only comes out when i am not around because she knows there is food waiting and she is going to be safe so why should she ever come out when some one is here :scared: Can i start encouraging her to come out during the day when i am around in any way? Or is it too soon! Sorry if i dont make sense but i keep going through so many questions in my head , and i am not rushing anything just worried and want to do the right thing.
Today Ruth brought Lexy's old tree and some feathery toys for her and i am sure she would come out tonight and would enjoy , but i am really concern that she doesnt see the need to come out during the time that i am around and just wait till i go out or go to bed , oh yes and she did come out yesterday during the day just to eat but then i was out all day. So any advice on this matter would be much appreciated. Thankyou every one for helping me with Miss Millie ;)  x

OK Pav just listen  :shify: :shify:

Its possibly gonna take a very long time ( could be months) for her to come out when its light and you are up..................this is not a problem  ;D

Let her do everything at her pace like she is teaching you.

I think that she has come out and played at night is a great sign but now she has to learn to trust you. Do all the things you normally do in the house so she gets used to you being around and the various noises. Also lights going on and off, you on the puta, tv etc

Dont look at her even if she looks at you, always look to one side.

Make sure she has a nice box, cardboard, with sides and a top but with a hole in the side, with bedding inside that she can escape to hide. Its very important she has hiding places to escape to when she doesnt feel brave.

OK thats lesson one

Please keep us posted on how she is doing cos I am sure she will surprise you.  ;D  what colour is she, how old, long or short fur ?  ;D ;D

everything Gill says, plus I would add do not put a full day's food out at night - she will need to be hungry to make progress

then leave some dry food out where she can eat it during the day without being disturbed

and put out something soft to lie on anywhere the sun comes into the flat, as all cats are drawn to the sun

but it sounds as if she is relaxed when she does come out, and that is a good sign for the future

Thanks Gill, i just dont want her to feel she has food and safety when no one is around so why should she comes out when some one is ! :sneaky: I dont mind if it takes months for her to trust me, that's why she is here to feel safe and trust people  so one day she can get a good home. I haven't been able to do my normal things like laundry cos i think if she is still behind the machine i would scare her and also last 2 nights i have been going to bed early so she can come out and play, it must be horrible to sit all day hiding :(
There is hiding places for her under the stairs and a box with cushion inside, i also left feliway diffuser in the kitchen for her.
Ok i wont look at her direct ever again   its just curiosity to see how she really looks like and what she is upto.
She is kind of light ginger i think but i cant see well in dark :evillaugh: She is one year old and short hair and skinny but long :naughty: She is only 2.6 kilogram and i think she has huge ears and i just heard a noise behind me in the kitchen but i am not going to turn and look. :scared: x

Sounds to me like you're doing just fine hunnie

As others have said, let her do everything in her own time, just go about your normal day to day activities, she'll soon get used to all the noises, and then things won't seem quite so scary in time.

I'd find it hard not to keep looking as well, but can totally understand why you shouldn't  :shy: xxxxx

I think you will be ok to glance but I just wouldn't stare at her, you will instinctively know what to do I think  ;) with the ferals outside if they are looking scared when I approach them to bring food I don't stare I take the food and say their names gently and they don't run away now.  I also get down to their level alot of the time and now Zippy will come to me (but I still can't touch him) most of the regulars will come when I call them now.  I would act naturally and do my normal things but be wary that she may be in certain placesl, I wouldn't force the pace and would just go with the flow, I'm sure her confidence will come in time but I would put food out when you are there and she should com out in her own time, if she doesn't no matter and when she does - gradually nearer to you but just take it one step at a time

Blink slowly at her a lot if she sees you watching her. Sage is nervous, but my partner realised (before me, actually bless him!) that if he blinked at her slowly she realised he wasn't a threat. (It's how they tell each other apparently.)

You're doing great, Pav.

When I got Lexy they told me that blinking slowly and then looking away was a sign of submissiveness, so if you did that when looking at the cat, they would see themselves as your superior. Nothing new then!

Have to say that I think Millie is showing amazing progress considering her background.  It was great to see her toys all over the place yesterday, she clearly is playing and that's just great. You're doing well, honey. x

I still slow blink to Blackie, but now he also accepts the silly talk and scrunched up face too! He slow blinks back at me!  :Luv2:

Dont know what you are like for sitting/laying on the floor near to her pav, get a book or something so she is not your obvious attraction, think of David Attenborough and do one of them (become the background scenery!)

I think your doing great by the way, My Blackie does most of his jaunts of a night time as do my other cats so she is just being normal and when I say sit near her I do mean in the same room and dont want you trying to get behine the washer also!  :evillaugh: :Luv:

oh pav, sorry about your back lol!  sounsd like she is getting braver and it has only been a few days, with the best will in the world the mayhew must be a scary place with the noises and smells I'm sure she will come around quicker in your flat give it some time I bet within a month you will be seeing a bit more of her

Hope your back is better today. I certainly do read books out loud to them, am sure SJ came out purely because he was fed up of me reading the Lion, witch and wardrobe set to him!!
Pav, what I did with him to get him to come out was to use a trail of ham, I would put some close to him for him to get the taste and then do a trail to out in the open (although in the beginning, it wasn't near where I sat) and eventually he would take some from my hand, although if he got scared, I just put it on the floor, so he got some regardless. I did leave it a month or so for him to settle before doing that, but I did have an advantage in that he was in one room, which I think was a big help. From time to time, I would also sleep in the room with him, as he was more active at night, and he also had a cuddly dog (that he still has, even though he has been in his new home for just over 3 years now)

Dougal is still funny when eating, any sudden movement and he's off under the bed, comes back quickly now though, stomach rules :evillaugh: Bond on the other hand is very food motivated and I earned a lot of his trust with food.

I have limited experience with scaredy ferals, only having had two kittens which are much easier to bring round I imagine than an adult. I would just always talk to them, if I knew where they were hiding I would keep a not too intrusive distance and make sleepy eyes and chatter away to them. It's all a very slow process but every little moment of progress becomes a huge milestone and moment of pride.

She will bring you so much joy as all the little things add up to one big moment of trust :shy:

Thanks Desley and dancer for the tips :)
I did put some food out on both side of the sofa last night and while i was sitting here on computer she came out and i could hear her eating ;D
I didn't turn to look and then heard her  moving around still ignored her :innocent: When i went upstairs to go to bed she was in my bedroom behind the door and ran like a bullet :scared: But then during the night i had to come down few times and every time she was on landing playing and as soon as she saw me she ran down but came back up again. So at least now she comes out to eat while i am here in the same room with lights on and i think its going to take a long time for her not to runaway when she sees me.
I have to say i am really pleased with her progress and more happier than she is not behind the WM.
I am going to start reading to her from tonight while sitting on the sofa and the ham treat i start in couple of weeks. Thankyou everyone xx

Thanks Dawn, in mayhew they rely on volunteers to spend time with cats which need TLC,and i agree with you for a cat like Millie she has more chances of coming around in a quiet flat and i do hope she starts showing her face more.xx

I've found with scaredy Tosker that it's best to move around normally when he is hovering, as if I start creeping about or freezing on the spot he knows I am noticing him, which is just what he doesn't want - nor does he bother about normal household noises, like the TV or tumble drier

Millie is coming along nicely though Pav - she certainly doesn't sound a hopeless case by a long way

I have a scardey Ginger tom that comes round to visit me every evening when he first started to visit as soon as I moved he he would run off but I persisted and talked to him telling him he was OK and safe and slowly over time he now trusts me enught to let me stroke him (while he's having his catmilk and a bit of wet food).

I would suggest just keep talking to Millie all the time .... telling her what you are doing, where you are going etc etc - a sort of running commentary on your life   (even if you can't see her she will probably be watching and definitely listening to you).  Once she starts to get used to the sound of your voice she will be less jumpy and I'm sure in time she will come round.

All these new sights, smells sounds etc she will get used to...Mine is a pretty loud house Pav, I quite found this funny yesterday...Blackie was out the back with some other cats and the council were cutting the grass verges and Blackie shot in the house for fear of the noise!  :) :Luv2:

Each day as it comes, something tells me that your weeks will certainly be shorter than mine in progress!  :Luv:

Forgot to say about the radio - they actually say that either a talk station or classical music is best for scared cats - talk cos it gets them used to hearing voices, and classical for the soothing action. I couldn't find a classical station on my radio, so we spent the full 5 months SJ was here listening to TalkSport as it was the only talk station I could find!! Now everyone has to listen to Radio 1. Don't think the girls notice the odd day it isn't left on though, and the downstairs cats dont have a radio.

Some great news: Millie has been coming out to play, still a little wary but she's out. I received some photos in the mail today from Pav of Madam Millie Boots playing with her toys and just being a real missus. I'll scan them later so we have some electronic copies. I'll pop them up so everyone can see.

Pav is still missing Phoebe, naturally, but something tells me that Millie is making a little chink in her armour.   ;)

Thankyou everyone. :)
Millie has been spending more time out playing(She has killed 3 kitty kopter already :evillaugh:) and exploring the flat than hiding which is great, her new hiding and resting place is  on top of kitchen units ! She watch me all the time and follows me to the bedroom every night but if i try to get close or offer her food in my hand she just hisses !!I guess she still is very nervous and the slightest noise even out side make her run and hide. She was so scared when my neighbour came to see her the other day and just disappeared with such speed and didnt come out all night :(
I know still is early days but i want to know what happenes if say she does trust me and get close and then i take her back to mayhew for rehoming? I am not sure how it works with cats like Millie? Once she comes out of her shell is she going to be ok with other humans,i really hope that is the case . I have to say fostering is not for me, i keep thinking when i take her back she is going to think i have dumped her and what is going to happen to her :( Well i guess i just have to deal with it :innocent:
Ruth, thankyou for the pictures ;D x

T(She has killed 3 kitty kopter already :evillaugh:)

So glad you used the correct plural for more than one kitty kopter Pav  :evillaugh:

Can't answer your question about rehoming Pav but imagine it depends on the cat.  I best not say any more except she needs someone with the patience of a saint and so pleased she found you

OH winds me up on occasion by asking me to list in order who we would rehome if absolutely necessary if we could only keep one.  Afraid we always end up keeping Billy Whiz coz he's such a challenge (he jumped onto bed in wee hours for his 1st belly rub after about 3 months but still can't pick him up).  You and Gill could fight over Freddie  :evillaugh: ..... over my dead body of course  ;)

Pav, all I can say is that the pics of Millie are just wonderful.  Hope you are OK

With a cat like Millie, it takes loads of time and I would recommend you do everything at her speed and I have two cats who have been here 4 years and both run and hide if the door bell goes. If someone comes into the house they wont be seen again until after the person has gone!

As you know I still cant touch Sasa but she knows this is home and knows her name.......sigh

I dont know what would happen if you took her back to Mayhew  and thats something you would have to discuss with them. I suspect unless they had someone else to foster her she would go back to how she was.

Trigger has done great with Tosker and he was living outside but now seems to prefer being indoors mostly and from what you say, you are doing great with Millie but its time that is the key.

I do feel too that going back to Mayhew would only put her back over!  ;)

I feel in future if you feel she is rehibilitated towards people then let the potential new owner take her from your home, then she dont have to go back in!  :sneaky:

Its an awkward one with Millie Pav and for sure at the mo you do know her best, I do feel though that trust plays an awful big part for Mille also acceptance of her surroundings.....I cant honestly say if she would take to anyone else, my Blackie takes to me but not to the OH so he dont like men....They are all different I suppose!  ;)

Your still down arnt you sweetie......  :care: :grouphug:

I am glad she is coming round - I am debating fostering a poorly socialised cat for the rescue, but I will be offering that when she is ready, she is rehomed straight from here, to make it easier, but I dont know if the Mayhew will do that. I genuinely dont think they do feel that they have been dumped though, as long as they can go from home to home - Kizzy didn't even care when I left her yesterday and she had been here a year.

Post by: pappilon on January 21, 2010, 17:53:06 PM
I think is time for update on Millie  . Sorry i haven't posted much about her but now she is on Mayhew Rehoming site(She looks so sweet in her cube and i think the way they described her is fair, please have a look and see what you think because i can ask them to change it?)  and i know i have to be really pleased for her cos she is going to find a good home and settle but i cant stop worrying What if some one adopt her and then after a while return her or if she doesn't come around and they think she is not the right cat for them, i know i know is no guarantee that every rescue cat find a home for life but she has been with me now for 6 months and she is just so sweet and friendly , as soon as i start playing with her she just drop herself like a lump and cant get enough of tummy and chin rub ,loves to be brushed and doesn't stop purring  but if any one comes as close as my front door She just runs and hides so i am not sure how she is going to react to a new home :(
Last week i asked one of my neighbours to come and see if she likes to adopt her , it was late afternoon and she was sleeping in my bed under the duvet, thats what she does all day everyday and comes out late evening , i havent been able to change this since she's been here! Anyhow i moved the cover and she just started hissing and looked terrified but the good thing is she didnt runaway :-: Neighbour wasnt impressed so she said no!
The positive thing is that Mayhew likes to rehome her from my place so she doesnt have to go back to a pen .
There are also 2 gorgeous Persian on Mayhew site looking for home :Luv2: :naughty: x

Do you have a link to the site where she is Pav?

Sounds like she will need a very good owner , probably with no cats or children and the new ownere will have to take lots of time to get to know her and then she will be fine.

She is better than Sasa was when she came here and Sasa been rehomed and brought back twice to CP and was considered unhomeable.

Misa is also scared of other people and will hide and refuse to come out while they are here, it took me time with Misa and he still gets frightened of unexpecteed things but he had a truely awful past.

At the end of the day its up to Mayhew to only allow her to go to the right home and owner, just no point doing to her what was done to Sasa. You have given her a chance of a good life   ;D

I am so pleased that Millie has fallen in love with you, that shows that to the right person she will be the same in time..... Fantastic that they will allow a rehome straight from yours, I do think having to go back in is silly....You would think that any potential owners could still take from homes as some cats dont do well in centres!

that description is just perfect except for one thing......why is a garden essential?  :scared:
Gill,it was me who told the rehoming officer i thought its important for Millie to have access to a garden, because i can see how much she loves the life out side by her reaction while sitting by window and not being able to go out atm i think she gets bored and that's why she sleeps all day, she goes to bed around 10am and some times like tonight she still hasn't been down(I have tried to play with her and keep her busy during the day but she is not interested!) Of course right now even if i leave the door open she wont go out cos she is scared of everything but i am sure she would love the out door life.
Also thats the reason i told them why i am not adopting her because where i am going , she wont be able to have access t out side and i dont think its fair on a young cat , i think we should give them the choice and if they dont want to then thats fine. I remember when i adopted Phoebe , Mayhew told me she was kept indoor all her life and they thought that was one of the reasons she was aggressive and i remember the first chance she got she went out to the back garden, didnt do much not chasing birds and runaway from Bees but she just loved to sit out and after a while she was calmer. x I might be wrong about this but thats how i feel.

Thankyou Rosella, she is such a sweet girl :Luv: Still nervous with strangers but it takes time. Finger crossed she gets the right home.

Desley i am so pleased she doesn't have to go back to a pen but what worries me is when some one comes to see her and on the day she decides to stay out of site :scared: We just have to see how it goes and what is the best option!
As for going back still couple of months to sort out the flat and put it in the market and then see what happens but i am sure we speak before i leave :)

Ruth, when i fostered Millie from Mayhew i had to sign a form , i am not allowed to advertise her . She is basicly Mayhew cat not mine and she has to be homed through them and that is a good thing because if  the owner decides no longer to keep her they take her back, they also have some thing called friends of Mayhew and you basickly pay £10.00 a year and in event of your death they take the cat back and rehome her/him even if its not their cat.
I just have to put my feelings on the side and accept it :( It is going to be so hard for me cos she thinks here is her home and i hate to think how scared she will be in her new place but just hope it pass. I dont know never done fostering before and never want to do it again. Not strong enough when it comes to animals.
But thankx for the suggestion.

Pav, I have never known a foster cat not settle in a new home, even when they have been here a year, and even the less sociable cats - and as Gillian says, you have helped her come out of her shell, which helps a lot when they go to a new place.
Title: Re: Mix feelings, your opinion . Please send some positive vibes for Millie RTA
Post by: pappilon on September 22, 2010, 14:17:27 PM
Millie was involved in RTA this morning, i rushed her to my vet but she didn't look good. Her left eye was covered in blood and cut and her mouth was a mess my vet said its head trauma :'( He said for now he is going to give her pain killers and monitor her she was hissing and spiting at me and the vet , i told him she is terrified of people but she is really gentle just scared. She must be really scared right now being in a different place :( I did call the rescue and told them what happened.
Millie has come along way since 14 months ago, its been slow but she has become a very confident cat, but still terrified of people she started going out few months ago and really enjoys it, i tried to keep her in but she was so stressed crying and hanging from doors and windows to go out, she comes home every eve and has her meal and then goes upstairs to my bed and sleeps on my pillow till i go to bed all night she snuggle up to me and purrs and throw her self at me but comes morning she is a different cat she acts like a ferral, in last 14 months only 2 people have come to see her but they decided she is not the right cat! i know if some one give her a chance and be patient she will come around she is so gentle but i do understand people prefer friendly cats.Last week when i went to rescue to see what else we can do for her because i am leaving in couple of months and i need to make sure she is settled taking her back to a cat cabin in rescue will make her depress and they think she will just go back to how she was :( I told them she is now crossing the road and it really worries me they said they might be able to home her in a farm ? bUT THEN SHE LOVES HER HOME COMFORT and her freedom too, i was asked if i can keep her a bit more cos they are so full till they discuss it with other officers, now i wish i hadn't she left home at 7am this morning and as usual i watched her going to back garden and the to neighbours garden and the around 10 i heard a crying i knew it was her she sounds like kitten i asked my neighbour upstairs to look from her balcony to see if she can see her and i went to the street looking some how she made it back to next door flat volt i had to put a lather to get to  her and she was badly hurt my neighbour rushed us to my vet and now she is there i feel so bad and guilty she was in my care :'( :'(and my responsibility. Please send her some vibesplease. ThankxSorry for long post when you think things cant get any worse

Oh Pav hun

Sending over all my love and hugs to you both. I hope she will be ok hun. When did the vet say they would contact you to see how she is?

I know you will be worried sick and feeling so awful and in a bit of shock. I wish i was there to be with you.    Please hun don't blame yourself, as Helen says you care for her so well and given her the chance to see what love can be like. Cats are happy going out and i completely understand as i have been through it with Gizmo and Rio that they get very depressed once tasted the outside world and then kept in.  It's one of the hardest decisions to make for your cat - Keep in and safe but unhappy or let out and take a risk but be very happy.  You made the right one for her happiness hun as i did for my two lads.

I am sending so many good vibes and love over your way and hers. Huge hugs hun

Pav
I just wrote you a long pm before you posted this.
Millie had the only love and happiness she ever knew during her time with you, and when you are over the shock you will begin to remember all the little ways that she told you that she loved you. Let her down, never you gave her a whole lifetime of happiness in your time together.

Oh Pav, I have just come on and seen this and am so very sorry. You gave Millie the confidence to be happy with you and live like a normal cat and not cooped up in a cage. She loved you and will always thank you for what you gave her. Please dont blame yourself, she wanted to be free and explore and you allowed her this

RIP Millie, play hard on the Bridge and have left a pawprint in your humans heart.

Completely gutted for you Pav  :'( :'( :'(

Will post again later if I can find any words that might soothe but you simply mustn't think you had any choice but to let her outside.

I have this minute let our Millie outside as she is also an outdoor girl and hates being kept in but also is a duvet girl on her terms.  The fear is always there that something could happen but some cats simply cannot handle an indoor life

Pa I know everyone has said it already but you really mustn't blame yourself.  You did not let Millie down ... while she was with you she was loved and happy and you allowed her to do what she did best .. BE A CAT!!

My heart goes out to you at the terrible time and I know there are no words that will help to make you feel better at the moments.

RIP Millie .... playheard at the bridge little soul.  Much loved and sorely missed.

So sorry to hear she didn't make it  :(  I know you probably won't be able to see this now, as the pain is too raw, but when things settle down you'll be able to see that you gave Millie everything a cat could wish for - love, affection and freedom and you absolulutely did not let her down

RIP little Millie, safe and sound at the Bridge by now, waiting until your Mum is ready to collect you xx

Remember Our Love

I was chosen that day
I'm learning to fly
the world took me away
but please don't you cry

And I chose you today
to try and be strong
so please don't you cry
and don't say that I'm gone

When you're feeling alone
just remember our love,
I'm up near the stars
looking down from above.

Remember our love
In a moment you'll see
that I'm still here beside you
when you're thinking of me.

Thank You everyone.  I know is too late now to think what if but i keep thinking what if some one else had fostered her maybe with more experience I have had cats for 45 years i always adopted older cats difficult to home and some times it took years for them to come around but Millie wouldn't let any one close i think she learned to trust me with time and i know she would have with some one else given chance. Many months ago i even bought a camera and managed to video her for 40 min she was still nervous but i thought if the rescue put the video on her page people could see she was gentle but scared. I dont know much about video and i asked a place to make a CD she is on youtube on Mayhew site for 2 minutes if anyone can save it for me please ,cuz comes tomorrow they will remove everything :( She wont be there on rehoming page. I even had the vet to do a home visit about 10 weeks ago to give her the vaccination but he couldn't get to her she went really mad even she was in a closed room in the end he said is best to leave it because he said one of us is going to get hurt she went wild but as soon as they left she was fine. I keep thinking what else i could have done cats like Millie need so much time and patience i even thoughtof takig her back home with me but it wasnt right to put hr through travel, and i wont have a garden when i move back home.Sorry i am just trying to accept she is gone and i know she was so happy here she loved chasing birds and she was a hunter. I dont know i did try to find her a home i know she is not scared anymore.I really loved my little girl :'(

That's what you need to focus on

she is on youtube on Mayhew site for 2 minutes if anyone can save it for me please ,cuz comes tomorrow they will remove everything :(

That video says it all to me Pav, you can see how happy she was and how much she trusted and loved you

I have googled how to do it and have downloaded a program to save videos from Youtube, I've converted it to MP4 format and Windows Media player format so you can save it as a file to be kept forever on your computer. Just let me know what email address you want me to send them to, if they're too big to email I'll pop them on a disc for you

Have also put it on my photobucket so you can watch it anywhere, anytime  http://s195.photobucket.com/albums/z202/Lucas_Riley/?action=view&current=MillieMP4format.mp4 This was the original youtube link as they may only remove the video from their own website and leave it on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNArvchzbws&feature=player_embedded

Such a beautiful girl  :Luv2:

Today to this date is 14 months since i lost Phoebe and just too much to take in, i know it gets easier with time, it has to.
Thankx

Better for any animal to have a short happy life than a long one lived in fear or suffering. I am so so sorry to hear how you are grieving for your little angels, in time you will be able to smile as you remember the first time Millie purred or let you touch her or ventured out to play.  :Luv:

Honey, huge hugs. Sent you a text, didn't want to wake you by calling. Wish I could give you a big hug. I had the pleasure of seeing Millie in her little comfort zone, helping you find her when she didn't want to be found :) and seeing how you put every effort into giving her the quality of life she would never get with anyone else.

You did EVERYTHING right. I say this not as someone who is your friend, but as someone who witnessed it.

I'm thinking of you, and will call you tomorrow when its a sensible time.

Thanks Fire Fox, i do believe in what you said and the only thing that gives me some comfort atm is knowing Millie had some happy times here in her short life i still dont know what happened in her first year with the owner that turned her to be so nervous and terrified of people, i cant believe it was only not being handled. But i know she was 6 weeks in rescue before i fostered her and all that time she was hiding in her bed and only came out at night when no one was around to eat and use the tray. She started here with night routine but gradually things got better.
Thankyou every one for your support the kind words means somuch to me , right now its so hard cuz the only thing i can see is her face yesterday so badly hurt not my little girl cheeky face, why people have to drive so fast on a side road i never understand but i know with time i will be able to look at her video and well remember her as she was. Once again Thankyou. Hugsx
