Hi,
I'm a relative newbie to cats, I adopted my first one 2 years ago.
Rusty:

He's approx. 11 years old now, and has FIV and as a result of the poor immune system he has Calici (cat flu) which he is unable to get rid of.
The cat flu just affects his mouth; giving him a nasty ulcer on his tongue and some small ulcers on his teeth. He also drools as a result of the Calici.
He was quite shy when we first adopted him, but he has come round alot, and is quite talkative when he's hungry and gives us a little salute with his paw in greeting which is very cute!
We have also adopted a new cat just last Sunday who we've named Magic to keep Rusty company. He also has FIV and Calici but I don't think the Calici really affects him like it affects poor Rusty.
Sadly he had a swollen nose so the shelter vets took a biopsy which has left stitches in his nose and a collar of shame to stop him removing them, he is due out for his stitches tomorrow which I am dreading... (fortunately the biopsy has come back negative - thought to just be an allergy)
We put him in the spare bedroom to acclimatise him, and the plan is to introduce him slowly to the house and then to Rusty.
He has turned out to be an extremely shy cat, Sunday night he spent hiding behind the TV, Monday behind the pillows on the bed, and since Tuesday he has been under the bed.
He hasn't eaten, I don't know that he's drunk anything, and he's not used the litter tray but there is the query that he's toileted under the bed, as there is a slight smell.
I'm dreading having to go under the bed to fetch him out to get him to the vets tomorrow.
So if anyone has any ideas on how I can help Magic settle in I'd appreciate it... I'm regularly spraying the room with Feliway and there's a scratch post with a box he can hide in and a covered over catbed too. We're trying to stay out of the room as much as possible to give him space to adjust... but I'm going to have to speak to the vet tomorrow about him not eating.

Rusty is :Luv2: :Luv2:
Sounds like you are doing ok with Magic but know that Desley goes and sits in their room and reads aloud to them, think you need to spend time with Mgic but let him decide if he is going to hide or not, slowly slowly is best with scaredy cats.
Do you know what food he ate at the shelter cos often its best to start with what they are used to. If his nose is still sore his smell maybe affected and also the collar is proberly hindering too. As he hasnt eaten for a few days he needs to eat asap and maybe some AD diet from the vets will help kick start him.
So pleased the biopsy was negative and loads of luvk for tomorrow

Catching Magic wasn't as hard as I'd thought, though it meant my bf picking the bed up while I went under it to get him by the scruff.
Took him to the vets and we managed to get the collar off and stitches out.
He was a new cat with the collar off and enjoyed me giving him a scratch round his neck so I'm guessing the collar was quite sore.
Sadly the vet was worried that he was very dehydrated, though I think he must have drunk something as he had peed under the bed. They have taken him in and put him on a drip, and will let me know if he's ok to take home later today or whether they'll keep him in over the weekend.
So I'm a bit worried about it, my bf has convinced me he'll be ok, as drips can make a huge difference, but I just worry about poor Magic going through all of this.

Sending tons of positive vibes your way

The news got worse...
Magic has kidney failure.
We're going to keep him on a drip until Monday to see if there is any improvement and if there isn't it will be kinder to pts.
The shelter are assisting me with talking to the vets and will cover some of his emergency vet bills.

Sorry to welcome you to Purrs in such worrying circumstances
I really hope that Magic improves over the weekend

Magic is a lot better, but still on the drip.
He ate yesterday for the first time in a week.
So provided he is still ok tomorrow I will be able to bring him home tomorrow.
I'm going to start another thread asking for advice for him... please look out for it.
