Their to far from me but if they were nearer Id taken them on even thou Im really no keen on the russains as they are bitters, the chinese dwarfs are much better in getting handled & never been bitten with them.

Drives me mad. This girl claims to want to set up an animal rescue abroad, but really only has the basic knowledge. I know most people only start with that but it would appear she's not making any attempt to learn more - and lets face it, people will pole up with random animals and ask her to take them on. *And breathe!*

Gah. the home in Sheffield fell through. Apparantly, the hamsters are dwarf breed not syrian as I was told - and so are fine living together....as long as they're same sex.

I'm going to have to email the girl and INSIST she lets me go round and check whether they're male or female. Why must people make things more difficult by giving inaccurate facts?

i got the cat (Ben) from cat protection chesterfield, not sure where, we got lost any how!
best thing ive ever done, hes relieved my misery from loosing Sally.
he was reccomended by corporal smokey from purrs, she thought hed be great for me having seen him (match maker) and she was spot on...

what area of chesterfield?

Chinese hamsters live in colonies too - they're really protective of each other. It's adorable.

Yes dwarfs they can be kept together as they are socialable animals aslong as they are the same sex or you will find yaself overrun very quickly. Syrains MUST be kept on their own.

Nope, transport has not been organised. A lady in Sheffield already has the cages waiting but we can't get the hamsters to her!

I know how to sex hamsters as I used to keep them until a few years ago. They aren't actually with me, but would be for the collection, I think.

I can't bring them to my house for weeks as I've just convinced my partner to let me take on a gerbil that was left at the petshop after his owner was made homeless. (I will readily admit to not thinking gerbils are the best pets in the world, but the poor thing is three and I can't see many people wanting to take him on at that age. And he is a sweet old guy.)

Let me know if you can help, it would be appreciated.

only just seen this topic and we have just collected a cat from chesterfield bringing him home to sheff!
ive kept hamsters all my life, girls tend to be quite nippy, boys are calmer and make better pets for kids, but if handled well and regular there should be no prob

as the male gets older the scrotum is obvious but the best way when younger is round and v pointy... theres some pics on net if you type sexing hamsters and click images...

i always kept them separate as they are very Territorial and will fight to the death, but.... i did have a friend who kept four together.. i have heard that one species is better than others if kept together from young its either Syrian or Russian... but its risky, the bigger their home at present the better chance of no fights.

have you got transport yet, and how many need homes?
where in Sheffield.... ill see my hubby.... its a good cause and a nice drive!

If they havnt been handed much & you dont wont bitten then try getting them onto a ladder the type birds use & check what they are that way but it shouldnt be a problem if you cup your hands & pick them up from the sides not brinking hands down on top of them. Not recommend scruffing them behind the neck as done with cats as more likey their eyes will pop out......so Iv been told not that i ever did ...think this happened tpo someone else.

I kept hamsters for a number of years, so have vague experience of sexing them. Has to be said, though I'm not looking forward to it. If they haven't been handled much I'll probably get bitten a lot!

Adult syrians will fight to the death when they begin to reach adulthood which is only a matter several months. If I lived closer, I'd take them off your hands but that is no help to you right now, sorry.
The difficulty in sexing them especially when babies is theyare so small and very lively and jumpy to get a good look.

Syrains dosnt matter whiter litter mates or not can not be housed together, they are solitary animals. Housing them together will mean fights & killing each other.

RR, I've been told littermates can stay together sometimes with no problems. But I have sent the email letting the girl know I'll pop round and sex them if she lets me know when she's in.

If these are syrains & different ages & housed together they wont be play fighting anymore as they get bigger/older this will turn into for real & will result in serious injury or death as they are solitary beaties & must be housed on their own....so best check on this & seperate them

Tis true. It's also something you can look up easily - the boys "bottoms" are generally more pointed than the girls rounded ones.

His sister owns the hamsters and lives a fair trek away. she said she was picking them up to take them back to her home a couple of months ago and still hasn't.

Actually, I've had a rat dumped on me in the middle of town before now!

Can anyone offer a small creature a home? A girl has contacted me saying that her partner has had five hamsters dumped on him. They are all grey and white and varying slightly in age.

Unsure of sexes at present. (Although, I'm not sur how! You can generally tell!

)
