We got a call late last night regarding a stray cat that a lady had been feeding for the last 12 - 18mths. Strangely enough the turn in weather had made her phone us to have him taken care of. :tired:
We decided to call this wee fella Wilfred from the Name a Cat from the Auction as he is quite a distinguished (if a little grubby n bedraggled) looking wee soul. Thanks go to CarolM for the name! :Luv2:
Paul got there to find an older cat, black and white and looking rather bedraggled, sad and with a big chunk of his ear missing. Obviously the old boy has been fending for himself for quite a while and he had lost his trust in humans and so, Paul ended up having to set up the trap to get him.
Once caught he brought the big boy back to base and we got him settled in for the night. Even managed a wee chin tickle and he ate which was great.
This morning however saw a different story when Paul went to feed him and said cat decided to bolt past Paul at a rate of knots and before he knew what had happened Wilfred had taken up residence in the most awkward spot imaginable! :tired:  cats! I tell you who'd have them! - doesn't he know we are trying to help him! lol :Luv2:
Anyways... we have kept an eye on him today and he hasn't moved from his current spot and are currently going for the ignore and hunger approach. Hopefully when he gets hungry he'll decide to start getting a little braver! ;)
At that point we hope he'll let us take a wee piccy or two!
-
Don't you just love the escapees he sounds a wonderful distinguished older male - at least he got our past Paul so he can take the blame - just as Robin did for Baeijing as he let her out the day she didn't come home!
-
oh yeah he can! am really hoping that he decides to get brave tonight or tomorrow. The others not so happy about not getting their exercise time today! oops! - bad daddy! lol ;-)
-
I now have an inage of Paul with a fishing net trying to explain to Wilfird the harbour rules on where and when he is allowed out
-
Having once had to dismantle my combi-boiler to fish out an escapee feral kitten from behind water pipes I can truly sympathise. :tired:
-
well I have good news! Wilfred decided that hunger surpassed his urge to hide last night and ventured out into the trap we set! yaaayyyyy!
No way he was coming any other way lol He was most unimpressed (to put it mildly) but is at least now secured into one of the double locking pens just in case he gets any ideas with a box to hide in to make him feel a bit better.
We seem to be getting a fair run of the fiesty characters of late.... but I'm sure this old boy just needs some patience and to trust again and he'll come around. has definitely belonged to someone in the past but he's been out there essentially fending for himself for a long time.
Hopefully will get some piccies later!
-
Bless him, hopefully he'll soon come round, look forward to pics ;D
-
So he gave in willingly or did you have to keep sending Paul in to ask him nicely to go back in his nice pen!
-
Poor old Wilf. :evillaugh: Let's hope he regains his trust in people
-
I'd say he gave in anything but willingly! lol Most unimpressed
lets just say though that Paul has not even thought of going near his pen today! lol
-
LOve to see Wilf and poor boy to have been looking after himself doer so long but in this weather he must understand he is best off with you..........well soon maybe
-
Aw bless him and bless you for taking him in. I'm sure you'll mange to turn him around.
He does have certain things in common with his namesake. Our Wilfred was a big, black, battle-scarred entire Tom when we took him in. He had so so many bits missing from his ears that the edges looked wavy.. We had him seen to but he never lost his urge to wander and often went AWOL for days. One day he went out and didn't return but I suspect he had other homes from his days as a stray and just decided the grass was greener on the other side. He was quite a character though. He had the loudest purr I've ever heard and used it all the time, especially when eating which he loved to do. One day he wanted his tea and I was doing something so I said 'you'll have to get your own I'm busy'. Next thing there was a crash and I went into the kitchen to find the cupboard door open and a tin of food on the floor where he had pawed it out
-
So glad you have this old boy sorted now, hope in time he learns were not all that bad bless! :Luv2:
-
Oh carol now how unlikely is it that we would have picked a name that so closely matched his namesake!! :wow:
I am very pleased to be able to report that paul even managed to feed wilfred this morning without letting him out!! :)
I'm sure he will show his true nature in time we just have to let him know he's safe. :Luv2:
-
Aw bless him, hope he settles down soon and realises that not all humans are bad :Luv:
-
Piccie time for Wilfred. He has settled down now thathe has somewhere to hide and doesn't have to put up with lookign at us!
Though he is now happy for us to feed him and certainly enjoys his grub! Just a waiting game for this old boy.
Enjoy! Isn't he handsome!

Im sure the vet will be pleased at his chosen basket, he looks a mature stinker
-
Aww Wilfred you are just so lovely.
Just love clack and white cats. Not that i am biased as mine are black and white lol
-
Wilfred looks very distinguished if not a little naughty :Luv2:
-
:Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2:
-
I love him, quirky ear and all! :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2:
-
I think his wavy ear makes him look vaguely piratical! :evillaugh: ;)
-
Bless him - good luck with him
-
I think his wavy ear makes him look vaguely piratical! :evillaugh: ;)
We used to call Jack "Cap'n Jack" after the release of Pirates of the Caribbean.....sorry, off topic. Just reminded me of His Handsomeness.
I think Wilfred is ace; he's got some serious tom cat look about him!
-
Well our Wilfred was most unimpressed this morning on his way to the v.e.t. for neutering.
Bless him - but I just dont know how anyone can stand the smell of eau de tom!
Hopefully he won't be in too grumpy a mood when we get him back later!
-
What a handsome devil he is - hope his bits (ex bits) aren't too sore -
he looks like he will be happy to have somewhere to call his own :Luv: :Luv:
-
hope all goes well for him today
-
Hope all goes well today
-
Good luck for this lovely boy today and hope he appreciates the loss :evillaugh:
-
Their loss is his gain, and hopefully then he can curl up and be a pipe and slippers kind of a guy..... ;)
-
Good luck with the op, Wilfred!
-
Hope all goes well for dear Wilfred
-
Hope all went well and he's soon smelling sweeter :Luv2:
-
well our wilfred is home and not best impressed but has eaten and having a good ol cat nap! thankfully the eau de tom will settle down over the next few days and he will start to calm down a tad.
Would appear he's not quite as old as we had thought and the vet has aged him between 5-8yrs - he just looks very rough!! lol bless him :Luv2:
Also got his teeth checked over and he is apparently missing his 2 upper canines!
Hopefullythough the next few days will see him settle down and we can let him know what it is to be loved again.
-
I feel lots of bribery coming on :evillaugh:
-
oh you know us too well! :shy: :sneaky: :sneaky: ;)
-
Aw, bless him. He's clearly had a hard paper round so far - be nice to think he can relax a bit now, and not have to worry about food, and girls, and food, and girls and fighting for the food/girls.
-
glad to hear he's home and ok :)
-
Glad he is back at home! :wow: Im sure he will settle more now and good to hear that he isnt that old! :Luv2:
-
Wilfred is doing fine adn much more settled - well compared to what he was when he first came in!
Paul even managed to pet him yesterday and this morning - even when he was eating and he is venturing out of his box a little more now too. :)
-
Well done Wilfred, slowly slowly does it ;D
-
So glad you have allowed Paul and Wilfred to play together again! ;)
-
Glad to hear that Wilfred is making progress :)
-
Aw thats fab, I think there is a cuddlebum in the making here! :Luv2:
-
Awwww how cute is he! ;D ;D
Glad he is becoming more settled (and less stinky now he no longer has his bits :evillaugh:)
-
well I now have documented proof for you all that Wilfred does in fact leave his box!! He even comes out for petts and attention and we (briefly) got aplay session today.

Wilf enjoying an ear rub!
-
Aww bless him :Luv2: :Luv2: He looks bigger than his box :)
-
I must admit I thought he probably had more trouble getting in his box than out of it   His facial markings are very similar to that of my Kit. :Luv2:
-
:Luv2: He's certainly a big boy :Luv:
-
He is lovely and definately needs a bigger box ;D
-
It's a good job he's so far away as he is definitely my kinda pud. :agree: I just loves 'em when they got that lived in look. :briggin:
-
Aw such a sweetie, judging by those ears he has had a few fights under his belt.....Obviously still a love for humans! :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2:
-
Aw, he's gorgeous. He looks a right old duffer, and I hadn't realised just how big he was either until you see him emerging from his box. :Luv2:
-
:Luv2: awww he's great, my kinda fellow too :evillaugh:
eta: just looking at him you can tell he was neutered late - he has those big chops on him (like our Matty cat) :Luv: he's a smasher!
-
Awww, he's a babe :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:
-
oh he's a big old bruiser that is for sure! but such a gentle giant to the hissing wild thing that came in a week or two ago. As soon as you call his name now he comes wandering out of his box. He loves his box and you'd be surprised at how he manages to get himself in and turned around in it! lol :Luv2:
He is such a happy wee soul now and even took an interest in playing. He reminds me SOOO much of our henry and I'm so glad we could be there to help him rather than him know nothing but the streets for the rest of his days. he is going to make someone a real sweetie pie of a cat one day soon! :Luv2:
-
Oh, after reading about Wilfred, it makes me so much more keen to rehome another puss! We lost our last 18 year old puss a year ago and our other oldie 2 years prior to that and hubby said NO MORE as he can't cope with the upset and being too attached etc.
We've now been without our puss for nearly a year and it's rotten - no wailing to wake us up the mornings at 5am, no scratched carpets or side of chairs, no litter strewn all over the house, no 'presents' left for us to admire, no hair on the furniture/beds/or on black clothes, no kneading on laps, no puss contained inside the duvet cover when making the bed (funny how they like to go there at that time) I'd go back to all this IN A MINUTE if we could JUST have another feline friend. It's just trying to persuade hubby to agree .... (any tips welcome)!
:(
If, in a few months I can persuade hubby to change his mind, I will certainly be contacting Mad Kitty Rescue (we're not too far away) to see if we could possibly rehome a feline friend, they sound SO DEDICATED to the work that they do!
Good luck with Wilfred, he's just AMAZING!
-
Lizzie, have you talked about fostering? If you and hubby knew from the outset it was temporary and you are giving shelter to a cat with nowhere to go, you could still have all the benefits of having a puss around and also the great sense of pride that you've helped save a life. :wow: ;)
-
Yeah, we've done a short term foster a while back - it's quite difficult as you get so attached!!! It's a good idea and I will suggest to hubby. He's such an emotional person (bless him) - we've been through a few bereavements of close family lately that, I think, has affected him and made him over emotional at the moment.
I'm thinking of perhaps applying to volunteer at a shelter for cleaning out etc. as I'm quite experienced with many cat characters, ferals, timids, torties with attitude etc.!
Isn't Wilfred just a gem - when I see characters like Wilfred, it reminds me of what I am missing! :(
-
... the next one, Lizzie. There's always a next one. That's what stops you getting too attached. Wave them goodbye out the door with a proud smile and think about the good you've done for them while they stayed with you. Then scrub everything, freshen the place up and bring the next one in from the cold. :briggin:
Wilfred is adorable. :naughty: But I'm sure MKR won't mind me saying he's a lucky one as he's got his nice box now. :evillaugh: It's the other Wilfreds still waiting that my mind is always on. :'(
Sorry for hyjacking. :-[
-
hope you can twist your ohs arm lizzie cos i am sure some fur to cuddle would help him
-
Thanks, Julie, your kind words said it all! Will seriously consider fostering and will discuss with OH. x :)
-
Just a wee update on Wilf (and get things back on track! ;-) ) lol ;)
He is doing brilliantly well and I have to say I really really love this ol boy. :Luv2: he is such a sweetie and has the most amazing purr - he purrs through his nose!!! :Luv2: lol sounds as though he is chuffing at you lol
Have said to Paul that I am going to try and get a wee video of him for you all later on so that you can see the difference in this fantastic lad. :)
I was either very brave or very stupid the other night and did ask him for a kiss - however I recevied a kiss though more Glasgae kiss than anything! ouch!
This fella is going to make someone a very very special companion and they will be SOOO lucky to have him. I'm just glad that we were contacted about him and could let him have the good life for the rest of his days. :Luv2: :Luv2:
