Title: Meet Mabel - she's here!!
Post by: Desley (booktigger) on June 21, 2008, 23:27:17 PM
She is going to be my new permanent kitty, I have been at one cat of my own since I lost Tiger last November, I have been getting itchy for a new cat for a couple of weeks now (think it is cos I know Rosie is on limited time, it is my way of coping), ironically, the rescue she is coming from said last week that they didnt have any oldies in, they have never pushed her as she wees standing up (same as Miss Molly), but I said I had had 2.5 years of that, it isn't an issue, we have carpet protector, doggie pads and covered trays for that. I could have had her today if it hadn't been for family commitments, so I am picking her up in a fortnight. We dont know how old she is, but she is obviously in her teens, so I shall have to guess an age, and then get insurance sorted, and 3 weeks after coming, she can go for bloods, chip and booster (she was vaccd last August, so it should only be a week or so early). She is a typical oldie, doesn't want anything more than a warm bed in front of a fire (she wil have to make do with a radiator here) and some food, so am sure she will be fine here, she doesn't like to go out much.

She is, they have two cream and white females, the other one was all over me too, i had to stay longer than planned cos she spent so long sleeping on my shoulder!! As long as she doesn't try and take over the bed, Molly will be fine with her, she rarely comes downstairs and if she does, it is to go outside, so might not meet her for a while!! Not sure how Rolo and Moses are going to take to her, but at the end of the day, they are fosters, and a home might come up for them tomorrow. She has been at the rescue since last March, so I think it is about time she got a good home.

Oh yeah, and as well as the litter tray issues, she has slightly runny eyes and feels a bit thin and bony - should fit in well here then!! Vet does keep asking me where I get these cats from. I am just drawn to cats that need a good home, most have been healthy when I agreed to take them on, I cant help it if they then develop health issues.

Christine, sadly she has been there since MArch 2007 - she hasn't been in a pen that long though, they let their 'residents' have the run of the place, and it is a really nice place (so nice I spent hours there rather than the short time i thought I would!! Part of that was one of their other residents settling down to sleep on my neck though!!).
Thanks for all the nice comments, I just hope Rolo and Moses are fine with her, i suspect i am going to have 3 fighting for the bed in front of the kitchen radiator!! By the time I pick her up, it will be 7 months since I went down to one permanent cat, it is the longest I have ever stuck at one of my own, although I have never had 2 long term fosters before either. i dont know how I am going to be able to wait 2 weeks though, I am soooo excited, I have to keep looking at her pic. Just so ironic that they said they didn't have any oldies looking for homes, so I went just to meet them, and reserved a cat.
She is more white and cream MM, not sure she is dark enough to be classed as ginger, although looking at her pics on their sponsorship page, her tail is, but her face isn't - here it is, there are more pics of her here, i was taken with her from the moment I saw her, but I was also taken with their other cream and white girl

Mabel is here now, she is a bit snuffly bless her, and is slightly thin and bony, so should fit in well here!! She has had a good brush to help her fur, as it isn't in the best condition, but hopefully a home environment will work wonders. She is already registered at the vets, and has an app for the end of the month for bloods and a booster - she was vacc'd last August by the rescue. Pics will follow when I have time to resize them.

She turned up as a stray last March Sam, she did have a really bad cold and mouth ulcers at the time, which explains why she is snuffly now she has been moved, so she has an oil burner with eucalyptus in there, and I will have a shower shortly to create some steam. Apparently she missed the tray, so they didn't think they could rehome her, but she has used it overnight with no issues - it is a covered tray though. She wont be coming out of the bathroom for a few days, as the move has obviously made her snuffles a bit worse, so she needs to get over that before she has to go through being spat at, but she has been mixing with cats for the past year and a bit. She ate well last night though - rescue said she barely touches dry, but she ate more dry than wet!!

Thanks everyone, her nose isn't nearly as bad as it was this morning, and she has eaten a decent amount again - preferred HiLife senior to Whiskas though!! Rachel has met her today, and thinks that she could be as old as 15. Both of us will be very surprised if she has a clean bill of health when her bloods are done though, and she has been a bit unsteady on her legs today, bless her. Her fur has practically no shine to it, so it will be a challenge to build her up!!
MM - she did, but was sick on it today, so that is ready to go in the wash now!!

She had some time out last night, dont think she met anyone though, as she sat on the stairs (well, the neighbours cat came in and sniffed her, she wasn't bothered). Her nose isn't nearly as bad, and she has started to eat better now. Her fur is also starting to feel softer, although still separates a lot.

Post by: Desley (booktigger) on July 11, 2008, 07:59:16 AM
She is a lot less snotty, so she has had full run of the house yesterday, when we had our first tray accident, the downstairs one is obviously too small. I think she is a bit deaf, she walked right past two hissing cats last night with no issue!! So she has been in every room bar the cat room. She is eating much better, and does like to try out every bowl of food she can find, so she is a bit loose today, bless her. Her favourite spot seems to be the landing, so I need to re-arrange things so she can have food and water on there. LEast my bathroom is mine again.

Great news, glad her cold is clearing....I bought some eucalyptus oil as suggested for Teddie and her cold has cleared up a treat...it really kept the breathing smooth!  ;D

So now you think Mabel may be slightly deaf? I had a deaf cat and I can honestly say that is one of the up-sides of deafness...They cant be lulled into a fight via hissing!  :evillaugh: But may also be an after effect of her cold!  ;)

Glad she has settled in so well...you must be relieved!  :Luv:

Either deaf or ignorant!! not only does she ignore the others, she ignores me. She is venturing downstairs more and more now, just need to sort out her tum, as she is trying any food she can find in the house.

New pics that i have just taken, she does look much better to say she has only been here a week, there was even a slight shine to her fur. Much more active, although her back legs aren't great.

Title: Re: Meet Mabel - she's here!!
Post by: Desley (booktigger) on July 13, 2008, 09:54:18 AM
Thanks T.
She is back in isolation at the moment, partly to see if we can stop the dodgy tum (she loves Zia's biscuits, so I might have to introduce those gradually), and partly to help her litter tray issues - she is fine in the bathroom, but when loose in the house, she will head towards the downstairs tray, and if it isn't good enough for her, will use my kitchen floor. I swapped it for a covered tray last night, and followed her, and despite 3 attempts at stopping her (calling her name, clapping and tapping her bum), she still used the floor in front of me - I had already blocked off the first place she used, so it wasn't cos she could smell it. I am hoping when her tum is fine it will all stop, if not, i will just have to put doggy pads there, or rearrange and have two trays.

Post by: Desley (booktigger) on July 13, 2008, 10:02:13 AM
It was one of the reasons she wasn't put up for rehoming, but am sure they told me it was weeing that she did out of the tray (in all honesty, I find poo easier to clean!!), but she was fine in the bathroom with a covered tray initially, and has been fine overnight with a covered tray, its just the run of the house that does it!! Might have one of each in the kitchen, and see what she thinks. She isn't impressed with being back in the bathroom, but it is more to restrict what she is eating to settle her tum than anything else.
Title: Re: Meet Mabel - she's here!!
Post by: Desley (booktigger) on July 14, 2008, 08:21:40 AM
Well, we had a really good day yesterday, she wolfed her food as though she hadn't eaten for days, and when I was downstairs, I let her come down for some supervised timeout (after removing all the food!!), she even had a play with Da Bird. And then she let me put her on my knee and settled, which was good (not sure she can jump that well, haven't found her on anything above ground floor yet). She was odd overnight though, I gave her the new covered tray, rather than the one she had last week, in case it made a difference, she has wee'd in it, but poo'd on the floor - at least she was practically solid. I can see newspaper and doggy pads being my favourite things for a few months. I am starting to mix food now, so that hopefully it wont be a shock when she pinches someone else's.
Title: Re: Meet Mabel - she's here!!
Post by: Desley (booktigger) on July 20, 2008, 16:55:03 PM
Well, she has been here two weeks now - still having litter tray issues with her, she does hang over the edge, and prefers the uncovered one, so swapped it for the biggest, and she still got it over the edge. She is also hungry most of the time, so goes on the hunt for whatever food she can find, which is causing her to have an upset tum - i keep isolating her and moving the other food from her, and bought some whiskas pouches yesterday, given up trying to introduce better quality foods to her now. She is gettig slightly worrying with how much she can eat, I was told she didn't always finish the pouch a meal they gave her, and she barely touched dry, she isn't like that here, although she prefers the other flavours of JWB, but I am concerned about her tum and keep taking it away from her.

Post by: Desley (booktigger) on July 20, 2008, 17:12:55 PM
Yep - shouldnt have expected anything different really!! not had her to the vets to be weighed yet and I refuse to have scales in the house, i have one app this week and one next, so need to see who I hvae booked in when and maybe juggle them. She is definitely underweight though, very thin back end.

Hi Desley,

Do you think Mabel may have thyroid problem,if she is always hungry and is very tin. The reason i am saying it cos my Jim was really tin and even though he used to eat twice as much as Boy, but he never did put on any weight.

Sending Mabel gentle .x

Am going to have to take Mabel tonight instead of next week (it was next week in line with her boosters), her poos have got worse, so she has had to go back into isolation until hte vet sees her, I cant work out why though, I have been moving all their food to stop her getting at it, she is eating a lot of dry though, despite being told she barely touched it, and does wolf her food. I let her sit on the doorstep with me last night, and when I opened the door this morning she dashed out and tried to find the grass, so I picked some for her and put it in the bathroom with her, so she is seeming quite settled and happy here. She was having full bloods done next week anyway, so they will have to be brought forward a week.

Thanks - not the best vet visit. Vets initial comment was 'she is elderly, dehydrated and arthritic' - then she actually examined her!! Her thin back legs are muscle wastage, her breath is incredibly bad teeth, how this cat is eating as much as she is is beyond me, she has loads of pus. Tummy is tense due to the diarrhea, which has also caused dehydration (yet in isolation today, she was perfectly solid and got the tray!!), and vet has done full bloods before we decide anything for teeth and arthritis - she is suspecting multiple health issues and doesn't even want me to buy arthritis supplements till we know what is going on, so not the most positive thing - and she is in better condition than she was 3 weeks ago, her nose and eyes have been clear for the past 24 hours, her face has never been so clean. She has had 2 jabs, and we have antirobe tabs until we know what the bloods say, the vets initial thoughts are about not being strong enough to cope with an anaesthetic. She has wolfed nearly a pouch and a half since getting home, and i have had to move all the other food cos she still wants to eat anything in sight. So, looks like I picked a good one here, but the most important thing is that she is in a home environment with more one on one for whatever time she has left. Ironic that she was supposed to help me get over Rosie and has more health issues, and certainly more confusing.

Thanks - she is going to be a nightmare to do anything with though, and stress makes her eyes and nose flare up, and then she cant' eat unless she is debunged, and she hates that. I am just hoping that her eagerness with food means we can hide things, or there is very little chance of medicating her even if it is something treatable. She has had grey poo this week, so also suspected pancreas issues.

Des, you sure know how to get older ladies with issues.

Hope that they are controlable and she does have some time to spend with you

I would still ask for injectable antibiotics - once a day is easier than a tablet believe me - having had Gracie on them for the last 4 months and she led with food, still at least with antirobe you can split the capsules and hide it in wet food - mix well thought these wise older types know!!!!!!

Poor Mabel and poor you.  I hope the vet can sort things out for her so she can have some lovely time with you.  When Dragan had pancreatitis his poo was never grey, it was a light fawn colour.
Title: Re: Meet Mabel - she's here!!
Post by: Desley (booktigger) on July 25, 2008, 07:52:02 AM
Thanks everyone, she did have a bad night last night, I am sure everything she ate came back out, and not in a good way - never known a cat have 4 poos in one day. So, she had to be in isolation with purely water last night, and will have to restrict her food. Left her munching her food with Antirobe in it.
Liz, the problem with the injectable ab is tht it isn't licenced for everything, which is why it wasn't used on Rosie, she needed something different. It might cover dental issues, but we are seeing how she does on Antirobe first as it is brilliant for mouth issues, and the vet is hoping to have the results in the morning, so we can see what is actually going on -  I am at the vets with Moses tomorrow, so if needed, I can take Mabel along with me, or swap them around.

Thanks guys, she still has diarrhea, although I dont think she is as dehydrated. Ended up ringing the emergency vet last night as she was desperate for food, but I wasn't sure how much or what to give her, so she is currently on sardines (no sensitivity food in, and she only picks at fresh chicken, although no wonder with her teeth), and I am waiting for my vet to open in 20 mins to see if the results are back - at least I am already going there with one of the others today, so she can be seen if the vet feels it necessary.

Thanks, I will also ask about probiotics, I did put some SEB in her food last night, but not sure it had any effect!! Will get some sensitivity food in too, as I know she likes that. i will also have to think of some of the things we tried with Tiger last year when she had tummy issues.

Sadly not good results, they had to chase the labs, but even before they did, the vet was saying she looked worse, and that she didn't think I would have her for very long. Her results are indicative of lymphoma, and in her intestines, which is one of the worst places. Vet has given her a strong steroid, but if her poos dont improve, I have no option than to let her go, as she is constantly hungry but can't keep food in her long enough to get nutrients, and however bright and playful she is, that is no life for her. Please keep your fingers crossed that they do something good before Mon, when I have to update the vet

Oh Desley, i am so sorry.

This is what Boy has and if you remember i was refered to RVC by Caroline to do more tests on him before prescribing any med for him, after all the test i was told that the steroids will work only if they are taken with chemo tablets at the same time. I dont know if you want to go through with it with Mable, also food wise they recomended the DD Hills venison tinned diet strictly and nothing else :( If you want i still have one more tin left i can send it to you first thing Monday morning to try and see if she likes it i can also send their full report they gave me on Lymphoma in intestines if you think it may help if you read it, they were really good in there but tbh i think if i could go back to 9 months ago i wouldnt have started the chemo , its some thing that i never agreed with to put an animal through, but i guess at that time with everything that was happening with my first vet and wrong diagnose and the pressure i wasnt thinking straight, i agreed to start some thing that now after 9 months has put a lot of pressure financially on me cos not only i spent £Thousands on tests in different places but still i have to take him every month for blood test which he hates and medication which are very expensive and him that just putting the weight on cos of steroids, i thought since i am going through this with Boy, it may help you to know and then decide how far you want to go with treatment.

But i really think if you start Mabel on DD Venison it may help to settle her tummy , it did help Boy a lot when i started him on this but then he stoped eating it and i was told many times by Caroline with lymphoma its very important what they eat. Please let me know if you want me to send you the sample.Thinking of you and Mabel.

Thanks - my vet has suggested just giving her whatever she wants to eat, like the majority of my cats, she isnt very co-operative, vet couldnt even feel her tummy today, and there is no way i would put her through chemo. Thanks for the advice Pav, I think we really need to see how the steroids work, I got the impression that if I ring the vet on Mon and there is no improvement, then that is it, as she is effectively starving at the moment, that is why she is constantly hungry, but isn't doing too well at keeping anything in her.

Thanks - Chrissie, she is on RC Sensitivity, which she hasn't been all week, although she has been fine on Whiskas before.
Susanne - it isn't something I deliberately do, but I do sometimes feel jinxed, although if the steroids dont work and i have to let her go this week, it will be a record for me, as it is a month on Mon since I lost Rosie. This is the second cat I have adopted with sniffles that I knew wouldn't have years that has been found to have cancer and only had weeks (Blackie was a week short of 2 months), so maybe I shouldnt take anymore oldies with snuffles on.
I do hope so MM, it is odd that your's and PAv's experiences are different, so lets hope she responds, although there has been no improvement so far, she is just as loose, and already been twice since getting home. Have stopped isolating her, we know she can't pass it on, and there are 4 trays she has access to, so she might as well have the comfort of other places (her favourite is the stairs) for what time she has left.

Thanks - there has been no improvement yet, her stools are slightly better than they were, but she has had 6 poos since we got back from the vets, 4 of them overnight, so I dont see how she could have got any nutrients from what she has had (which did include two tablespoons of live yoghurt), so we really need an improvement today, or i dont think the vet will be very positive tomorrow.

Lymphoma can react so differently, Taffy went downhill very quickly, with the steroids only helping for 48 hours but then my friend had an amazing response, she now has another cat lasting a similar amount of time, hopefully he will continue strong.
Neither of us were told about d/d diet tho  :-:

Fingers crossed for a good improvement over the next 24hrs

Post by: Desley (booktigger) on July 27, 2008, 12:03:43 PM
True - and we dont know how long she has had issues for, with being in a multi-cat situation. I think RC Sensitivity will be very similar to D/D - my vet seems to use RC food rather than Hills, apart from a/d. She is really pestering for food again this morning, it is really hard to watch. I am supposed to be going to the rescue next Sun to tell them how well she is doing in her new home and show them pics of her playing etc - there is now going to be some sad news as well, even if there is an improvement. I dont think she has months left though, as even if the steroids help, there is the problem of her bad teeth.
Title: Re: Meet Mabel - she's here!!
Post by: Desley (booktigger) on July 27, 2008, 22:08:27 PM
Well, so far today she has eaten a decent amount and not gone to the loo yet - the main problem is she is constantly hungry, yet I have to watch what she eats in case it makes her worse, and I have to keep stopping her eating the other cats food. Will have to see if she is solid overnight and then what the vet thinks, it would be nice if she could at least have a month here. She has had some fun with catnip toys, and also some fresh air.

Well, only two poos overnight, not solid, but some shape to them, much better than before she went to the vet. Will ring them at lunchtime and see what she has to say, personally I dont think it is her time.

Vet has agreed to continue steroids - she has only given me a weeks worth to see how we go though, so not sure just how positive she is about it. I dont think we will get months with her, but her seeing a full month here would be nice. I have to go to the rescue she is from on Sun and tell them - they all loved her to bits, and she had 15 months there, but at least she has a home life for the end of her life, it is why I do it. The hardest thing to deal with is her hunger, she is constantly trying to find food, I have stopped her eating the others food 3 times, and debating whether to give her some dry food. I hope there is some improvement by the end of this week's worth of steroids, as that is the big test, whether to continue, on one hand, she is eating well, and enjoying some fresh air, but on the other, she is constantly hungry and not keeping all of it in her. This is a really hard call, as I have only known her for 3 weeks, and she hasn't been 100% since arriving, although her snuffles have pretty much gone. She looks so much better than she did, and if it wasn't for the belly, you wouldnt think there was much wrong with her.

Thanks, this week will be the big test. She has only had one poo overnight, but still not solid, and I am having real issues keeping her out of hte other cats food, as none of them eat all their food in one go!! I am debating taking her to the rescue with me on Sun, so they can all see her again, but not sure if that is a really daft thought.

Not a good day yesterday, came home to sloppy poo, and she wasn't as interested in her food, so only got half a pouch in her, and got up to more sloppy poo - hopefully it was just cos she pinched Moses food. There was also some sick, and I am thinking it is more likely to be her than Moses, as it was biscuits, and Moses didn't have any of those last night. She is better today, so fingers crossed it was just a one off day, but we will have to see how she goes on.

Still not so good today, just doing some research and found this, doesn't make me feel too great

Cats with intestinal lymphoma treated with prednisone alone have a life expectancy of 45-60 days. Other protocols using multiple drugs yield much better results (see below for details)

Here is the actual site for others, but it doesn't seem like a good chance whatever the treatment is, I am not going to put her through a biopsy to confirm it.

Only picking at her sensitivity food (typical after i just spend £8 on a new box!!), so have mixed some Whiskas in it to give her some variety. She isn't fully solid though, although better than yesterday, i wonder if it is something to do with the dry food she ate in place of the wet. I just hope the Whiskas doesn't make her worse again. Just seems so unfair at hte moment, her chronic snuffles have completely gone, and no one thought they would, and her fur looks so much better, she spent 15 months in a rescue, and isn't going to get that long in a home environment. At least she will get some time though, and she has carpets to sleep on, rather than just a bed in front of a fire.

it certainly does. Another bad day with her, she is still being really picky with her wet food, and I tried her on the new PAH dry earlier, it went straight through her, but there was blood in the poo, so I am very worried now, and it is finally hitting home how serious this is. After a converstaion with a friend, i am not sure how much effect the steroids are having, as it seems to depend on what she eats, and there isn't much consistency. We have one more steroid tab left, so it all depends on how she goes between now and Mon morning really (when I would have to ring and ask for some more). Tomorrow is going to be a hard day, as I have to go and break the news to the rescue, so I suspect there will be some tears then, i have managed to tell people without being too upset so far, but that seems to have changed tonight.

Title: Re: Meet Mabel - she's here!!

She was picky about cooked chicken, hence being on RC Sensitivity - she also has bad teeth, that we cant do anythign about, other than ab's. have tried natural yoghurt and SEB, she is fussy with both. She still isn't solid overnight, but more hungry, so not sure how good the news from the vet is going to be. One of them was sick too, I would sway towards her than Moses cos it looked more like the dry that Moses refuses to eat.

When I spoke to the vet yesterday, the only option left was to increase the preds, and if it doens't help, I have no option than to let her go - her food is obviously going through her quite quickly and not always fully digested, so we have 2 weeks of a higher dose, and I am going to use these two weeks to see how she goes, and if no better, I am going to let her go, as we can't cure her, it is only buying her time, but it has to be quality time, and I am not 100% sure about that, with watching her be so ravenous and then dealing with sloppy poo.

Well, the vet couldnt speak to me today, so I have an appointment for tomorrow, but I dont think I will be bringing her home - ironically, the radio is playing an apt song as I am typing this. Part of me wants to be selfish and ask for something else to buy her a few days, but I know even if the vet agrees and it just buys her the weekend, it isn't going to be any easier to face, and I will be doing it for me, not for her, and that isn't right - sometimes not having them for long is just as hard to bear, as you want that extra few days/weeks with them. It is so unfair that she has finally got a home after all that time in a rescue, and her eyes and nose have finally cleared up, so she is like a normal cat, and it is all going to be taken away from her due to cancer.

It can, but she has got worse since we increase the steroids, and that was the only option left. My vet knows my views on chemo in cats due to previous cats, so that hasn't been mentioned. I am also suspecting her teeth are playing a part in this, and we can't do anything for those other than ab's.

Hi Desley,
Just catching up with Mabel updates, you mentioned that she is eating well and interacting with you, i just want to say that as you know Boy some times has really bad days and or even weeks with his sloppy poos and his eating but from my experiance with Jim and Boy having Lymphoma in intestines i really dont think Mabel is suffering at the moment if she is eating well, i know you are concerned that she poo's so much but that is to do with what she eats and her condition. iIdo agree with Christine that some times you can delay the inevitable with right treatment and i have to say Boy is having Chemo but then the first two months which he was being sick every day and having diarrhoea and loosing a lot of weight till the diagnoses was made i knew he was happy , same as Mabel he was still eating and purring and responding .
I know Mabel hasnt been with you for long and you dont know much about her but from my experiance i think if she is still eating well and interacting with you then you should ask your vet to give her more steroids and may be B12 injection helps her and give yourself and her some more time together.

I am sure you do whats best .x

Thanks Pav, she did have a VitB jab while we were waiting for the results, it either didn't make any difference or it was the ab's, cos she got worse after that. She has been more grumpy this week, she wont let me pick her up anymore, and her belly is more distended. She is also being picky with her eating, and 3 poos in 12 hours isn't good on her system, so it just depends on what the vet thinks when she sees her. She has also stopped wandering round looking for food, she only comes in my bedroom for water now, and only went in the kitchen the other night for the litter tray.

Sadly, the outcome was what I suspected. She checked her mouth for me, as she still wasn't eating all her food, and there were ulcers in her mouth, whereas less than 2 weeks ago it was just a case of a few bad teeth, she was dehydrated, and her liver felt different, and the vet could feel nodules on it, so there were too many things going on to continue, the vet said she looked and felt worse than when she last saw her (and would have pts then if I had allowed it), I could have brought her home, but I would have been doing it for the wrong reasons, her quality of life was going. I just wish that she could have had longer here, after spending so long in a rescue with snuffles, but obviously it wasn't meant to be. The vet was surprised that a rescue had homed a cat in her condition, and she saw her after her fur, nose and eyes had cleared up.  RIP little one, I wish I had known about you sooner.

I know, it is just so unfair though. The vet did say that with how her tum felt and her general condition, she was surprised she wasn't being sick on a regular basis, that was one thing in her favour, she was rarely sick. At least I agreed to take her on regardless of litter tray habits so her last 5.5 weeks were in a home, with carpet (she chose to sleep on the stairs, and invariably ignored blankets). Everyone at the rescue loved her, she was such a sweet, gentle cat.

sometimes not having them for long is just as hard to bear, as you want that extra few days/weeks with them.

I know just what you mean Des , so sorry to hear Mabel has gone  :RIP:

Thanks everyone - it is really weird how only having a cat for a few weeks can make that decision sooo hard - it was the same with Blackie (similar time scale and she also had cancer), in both cases I knew what was coming but agreeing to it in the vets was a completely different matter. mind you, in both cases, it hadn't been that long since the last decision (it will be 6 weeks on Mon since i lost Rosie). Fortunately I dont have any  plans for this weekend, so just going to listen to lots of sad songs, eat some junk food, immerse myself in a good book, and spend time with the rest of the bunch, it really has been a depressing week, so going to have some me time.

Oh Des,

I'm so sorry to hear about Mabel.  i've only just read this thread and it is too sad for words.  I was unaware of Rosie's parting too...bless her.

It is one of the downsides of taking on older cats unfortunately...especially if they have been strays before being rescued because they will have had months or years of neglect before being found which doesn't do them any good...poor little darlings.  So much for life in the wild.

But you continue to give your heart to these sad little souls and thank goodness that you do.  Like you, I just wish they could know love and kindness for a little longer but as I've posted before, it seems that once these little loves find a safe sanctuary, they seem to relax their fight for survival and give themselves up to the inevitable final journey.  It is almost as though the struggle leads them to their final shelter here on earth and prepares them for their next destination....which is one that will be filled with love....and pain will be non-existent.

R.I.P. Mabel sweetheart...go play in those sun-filled meadows, where I'm sure you will find Rosie.

R.I.P. dear little Rosie....look out for Mabel and enjoy your wonderful new world together.

God bless you both.

Thinking of you Des.

Just a thought Desley....

Maybe (when you're ready) you should think about going back to the shelter and taking the little one who fell asleep on your shoulder.

I wonder how long poor little Mabel had been very ill....probably for ages..bless her.  You were guided to her because she needed you.  Someone had to take some notice of her and find her the help she so desperately required.  It's so sad  :'(

Take care.

Lots of love

Roz

Thanks for the kind words Roz, I have cried more today than I did yesterday for some reason, i did try to ring the rescue to tell them, she is going to ring me back tomorrow, as they were very busy today, and I was just crying into the phone. it certainly is the downside to taking on oldies, and the decision gets harder, not easier. I dread to think how long she had been ill, i suspected some health issue from Day 2, but nothing quite as serious.
i have no intention of adopting another cat at the moment, losing 2 in 6 weeks is enough for quite a while, but I rarely intend to get a cat, so who knows what will happen!! I do have space for another foster, so it might end up being another one who needs me.

Thanks, she did love to sleep on the carpet, bless her, and often shunned the fleecy blanket in favour of it - mind you, she had spent 15 months in a shelter with only tiled floor, so it was probably wonderful for her.

I think she was, and I am really pleased that she got a home life, even if I didnt quite get what I expected, losing 2 in 6 weeks is hard, and I am very emotional still - part of me thinks that I should cut back a lot on the oldies, as I am a lot more emotional than I used to be, but then i look round, I have a 15yo on my knee, and an 18yo on the bed, both had been in rescue for months cos no one would take them on (they were both younger at the rescue too, 13 and 17), and at least one would be dead now cos she was depressed in a rescue, and they make me realise why I do this, it isn't about me, it is about giving as many cats like these two the chance they have had, they didn't ask to come into rescue cos their owner was too ill to look after them, and they didn't deserve to be ignored simply because of their age. I will have a break from taking oldies in (well, i say that, I generally don't choose them, a sob story makes me open my heart up again!!), and when I am that bit stronger, or simply when one comes that I can't turn away, I will have another oldie, as it would dishonour all my bridge babes memory if I do that, and leave more oldies to go unwanted in a rescue. I am surprised at the rescues response to it though, it makes me wonder if i wasn't told the whole truth about her, but they are nice people, and I have been able to save money, as they let me order food through their Batley's account.

Mabel's leftover meds are going to one of my ex-fosters, who also has stomach cancer, so at least they will be going to some use, and I am sure Mabel would like that.
