Yesterday evening our local fox - we call him Biscuit - trotted right up to our open french windows and stood on the threshold. Blip, who had been sitting on OH's lap a few feet away, jumped down and intercepted Biscuit at the door, crouching ready to spring.
Sadly I missed this drama as I had gone to bed early with a thumping headache, but OH says that the two of them were less than three inches apart, muzzle to muzzle. He collected his wits and went to back Blip up: Biscuit loped off down the garden.
I was amazed at Blip's courage: Biscuit must be four or five times her size and she will have been terrified. Brave Blip :Luv:

Its suprising how close they are prepared to get, isnt it?
This was one of "our" feral cats ( lots of us look out for the two neutered ferals here and feed them, etc) meeting one of the foxes here ....

Well done Blip, my lot hunt in packs and a fox doesnt stand a chance round here, they love the Deer though and often play with them out in the field

Biscuit may be extra hungry to come that close to the house, could you put out food for him? A hungry fox is one that will take more risks including messing with cats.
Taffy lived alongside 4-6 foxes for 10 years and there wasnt a problem but we did feed them all daily and i think this helped to avoid conflict.

We took MM's advice on board and bought a couple of cans of dog food from our local corner shop yesterday. I put one out and it was gone this morning, so I'll put the other one out tonight. If that goes as well, I'll buy in a supply.

They are great for using up odds and sods, they also like fruit ;D

Well, I can update and say that the fox who seems to be eating the food is smaller than Biscuit, so I think she may be a vixen (probably Mrs Biscuit). I've dubbed her Honey.
Honey is now enjoying a regular evening meal of Waitrose Special Recipe Casserole Selection dog food. Despite the posh moniker, it isn't expensive, but Honey obviously appreciates it. Either the food, Blip or a combination of the two has stopped Honey approaching the french windows. So, so far so good :)

Update: we've all spent the afternoon (so far) in the garden together. Honey, on close inspection - and I've been standing close enough to touch her, although I didn't - looks like a very young fox indeed. She is female. At one point, she actually crawled under our outside table and sniffed around OH's feet :wow: I was indoors at the time :doh:
I do have a picture, but at this rate I may be able to get some better ones. However, I don't want Honey to lose her wariness of humans as not everyone round here will have her best interests at heart (although a large number of us do).
Blip is fine with Honey as long as she doesn't try to approach the french windows, but today I have noticed one or two pieces of Blip's poo in strategic places around the garden as territorial markers.

I would be so tempted to touch but you are right as some do not view foxes as nice animals and only as pests! >:(

Funny how Blip isnt bothered about the fox being in the garden, only near the house! But then again she is leaving her mark about so is still letting Foxy know who is boss! :Luv2: :Luv: :hug:

Honey update ;D
I normally buy Honey's food when I shop in Waitrose on Friday afternoons but yesterday I didn't go there and had run out of dog food. As it happened, I had to dash round to the vet after work to pick up Blip's Royal Canin so, rather than go to the corner shop, I asked the veterinary nurse if they had canned dog food.
'Yes,' she replied (looking puzzled as obviously I have never been in there with a dog) 'what sort of dog do you have?'
'A fox' I said.
The whirring of mental cogs which followed this statement was almost palpable :rofl:
Suffice to say that, after an explanation, I now have enhanced kudos with the nurses at our vet ;D
And by the way, she recommended puppy food for the additional calories, so anyone else feeding a fox might like to take note :hug:

Honey has done better than the foxes here!
I put out cat food for the feral cats
I put, on the shed roof, some bread and seed for the birds
And, behind the sheds I put out some pork scraps, which the foxes usually devour in minutes of me putting it out.
I got back indoors to see
Fox on the shed roof (they get up from the fence) eating the bread
The ferals eating the pork scraps
A very "late in the day" magpie eating the cat food!!

We have 3 foxes in our woods mum dad and the youngster , every night at 9pm i go out with food and bang the fence with a dish and he comes trotting out but stays a distance away then at 10pm we have the adults come altho they dont come close, i missed a brilliant picture several weeks ago ,i went out to fetch the cats in for bed and in the front garden there was Davey / Rossi /Cassie /Duke / Smudge and Casey all sat in the front garden and in the middle of them the young fox, not a bit scared that is until i went out then he ran over the fence and sat in the edge of the woods, ;D
