Title: Another Day, Another Newb!
Post by: ReeBz on May 09, 2013, 19:10:10 PM

Greetings from Hampshire! From myself, and my 15 week old kitty cat, Yuki.
(you know I've had to type this all out at least 5 times, because she keeps stepping on the keyboard
and erasing everything)

I've had rescued animals all my life, so this time I thought I'd go for a recommended (registered with GCCF)
breeder, to adopt a kitten. She's been with us for two weeks now, and she's settling in just fine.
In a few weeks, we have another one on the way! A little boy I think, this second one will be a rescue,
and a good old fashioned moggy. :) Hopefully they will get on just fine, news and pics of that to come, I hope!

Yuki is an Egyptian Mau. I don't know how many people have Mau's on the forum, so I'll just do a short Intro;
There aren't many of these Registered in the UK, by standard they are found in three colours, Silver, Smoke and Bronze.
But all colours in between are possible. All coats have black (or brown for Bronze) spots as well as stripes.
They are one of the only natural spotted breeds of domestic cat.
Yuki is a Silver, she doesn't have her adult coat yet, and her eyes will not turn green until she is around six months old?
If I remember rightly.
Mau's love to talk, a lot, and they are VERY inquisitive and intelligent. But also stubborn, and at 5am very annoying!
They are loyal, loving, free-spirited cats, who love to chat and to explore.

I've joined to meet other Cat owners/lovers!
Both to share my knowledge, and to learn from you guys.

Thanks for having me, and Yuki. :D
See you around the Board!

Any questions, feel free to ask.

Hello Reebz - and hello Yuki :wow: :welcome: :welcome:   Welcome to Purrs.

Well, isn't Yuki the Cat's Whiskers?   She's beautiful.  Very interesting to learn about the breed characteristics.  Although not sure the 5 a.m. thing is unique to Maus  ;) :evillaugh:  And very exciting that she'll soon have a little brother for a playmate.

Feel free to overwhelm us with pictures and updates - I dont think anyones managed to provide a surfeit of pictures in the past so don't be shy.   ;D

Welcome to Purrs, Reebz and Yuki!  :)  She is a beautiful girl, that's for sure! I think you'll enjoy this forum, it's very friendly and you might also enjoy From the Cat's Mouth part of the forum, where our babies talk to each other about their adventures and their slaves!   :)

Thanks a lot people!
We've got a kitty jungle gym coming this week, which should take some of the energy out of her,
and free up some more time for me. I didnt see a place on the forum for posting just pictures?
So do I throw a thread in the general board for that?

Ive been contacting rescue centers in Hampshire, but neither of them have contacted me
back in three months! Its been very hard to adopt a kitten this time, I have never known such
problems with adoption. Does anyone know of any kittens available in Hampshire?

Pics can go aaaaaanywhere! You can put them on this thread, or in general cat chat, or our cats stories - we don't mind where as long as there are lots of them  :evillaugh:

If you're needing to tire her out then you simply MUST get her a flying frenzy (oh, and a flying frenzy mouse attachment too)  :naughty: If you're unsure just have a look at some of the reviews! http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/shop/Flying-Frenzy-Wand-Cat-Toy?keyword=flying%20frenzy&category_id=0

Don't give up on a rescue kitten, I know from being on here that the vast majority of rescues are snowed under, Have a look at the list of rescues in your area here and give them another go  ;D

I think my cat is a wee bit too old for a gym now. It's good to keep kittens busy and occupied because they are so full of energy. They need their own beds and baskets before they take control of all the furniture and settees and treating them as their personal belongings. Owners rarely get a chance to reclaim their furnishings once pussies put their paws up.

Thanks for the Links!
Unfortunately I've already contacted every adoption center in my area, and none seem interested at all!
I can't believe how hard it has been to even SEE the kittens, let alone adopt them.

I have a fishing rod that I bought from Tiger MANY years ago, for some seriously good play time,
it belonged to my older cat who sadly passed away last month (while I was waiting for Yuki to be old enough
to bring home). I just replaced the changeable toy for something new.

Also she has a laser pen, which is her favourite toy.
Now laser pens (as you probably are aware) offer no reward at the end of play, no 'catching prey' feeling,
so these need to be rewarded by other means, so that the kitten feels she has done a good job!
I use a premium liver paste to reward her for 'catching the dot' occasionally.

I have ordered my Cat Tower/Jungle Gym, it looks lovely!
And it almost reaches the ceiling in height.
It's had no negative reviews at all on Amazon, and costs under £50!

I'll post the kitty pics somewhere in another thread, before I clutter this one too much

Thanks for the advice!

The gym is huge, and as Mau's are quite small cats I'm hoping to get many good years of entertainment out of it.
Even the other kitten (hopefully) wont turn out to be a big beefy boy, because his parents are quite small bodied.
We have a leather suite and the cat doesn't really like to sit on it luckily :P
She's welcome to sleep on the bed, because she has no underc-coat she really doesn't shed much at all.
I would love to see your kitties!

Lovely fitness centre for kitty and never thought of a fishing rod for him to use. There must be something for his birthday in a few days time . He keeps bleating on about it in.the section where the cats talk to each other. Billy has found some mates there. Your kitten should be very happy with the gym.

Hi, It might be a bit early if you want a kitten. Mine were the first lot of the year at the rescue I fostered for and they were born in April. So weren't ready for homes till July. I know more are born earlier now but that tends to be the time they have lots. So that's probably why they haven't contacted you.

Thanks to all for the welcomes!
I'm off to see potential kittens on Thursday afternoon, and am very excited.
I just hope (if we do reserve one) that they get on when we bring it home.
But I am holiday next week, so that will have to wait.

Does anyone have any 'introducing kittens to other kittens' stories to tell?

@den22

Orientals are lovely! I used to have a chocolate oriental, she lived until she was 19. They're great companions.
Are there other Bengals on here that you've seen?

Yuki's kitty tower came today!
I built it the second it got through the door (took me over half an hour) because the instructions were very derp.
She was even playing on it while it was being built, so I consider this 45 quid well spent!
When she gets a brother, they should have one hell of a good time.

Just ignore that random patch of cat litter.

Fingers crossed for Thursday  :wow:

The tower looks fab  :wow: Looks like it has a nice sturdy base for when two not so kitten-ish anymore kittens get bigger and start wrestling on the platforms when they're a bit older  :evillaugh:

Haha, yes! She's out of the pyjamas now, her spay incision is all healed and furry. :P
I wish I had done more for my elderly cat before she died, but she was never really as playful in her youth to use anything i bought her.
I would recommend it though! Amazing piece of kit.  :Luv2:  :Luv:

It's great for kittens and exploring younger cats, but billy is beginning to settle now after a few mad charges up and down the place. He has wardrobe , and other furniture to climb on anyway. Looks good though

I'm too afraid to let them on to the wardrobes, but that would be great.
They're fitted ones, and I'm pretty sure they have a big hole in the corner, which would be awful to fall down, and no IDEA how I'd ever get them out again.
Yuki used to play on it a lot, but now we have Moshi too, they use the tower more for sleeping on.
Have you ever bought cat furniture before?
