I was doing the cleaning last night and found a claw on the carpet by the bedroom door. I suspect one of the boys was trying to wake us up for breakfast and managed to pull it out (ouch). I checked both of them and it looks like Sherlock is missing his thumb claw (dew claw?) on his front paw.
He's not bothered by it at all, isn't limping or in any discomfort...do I assume he's fine therefore? I've read de-clawing cats is torturous but he seems to have taken it in his stride! As long as there's no infection, can I just ignore it?
PS. It was very hard not putting any puns about Claws/Clause in this thread!

If he isn't showing any distress I wouldn't worry. I found a tooth in oscars cat bed once - he was too frail for dental work and I was worried he would be in agony with it just falling out! Vet assured me not to worry and if he was acting fine then he was fine.
As long as he is eating and carrying out his normal routine I imagine he is fine :-)

I wonder if its just the sheath but the replacement claw is so far down it cant be seen.
I would just keep an eye on it and if anything strange seems to happen speak to your vet

I find claw sheaths all over the house. Seven of mine are successful in unsheathing their claws to reveal new sharps underneath. :)
Only Chubby's claws don't shed, we have to clip his claws to prevent them growing too long and ingrowing.
If the claw had a root or blood on it I'd be straight down the vet, but I suspect Gill is right and you have a sheath there. :)

Ah ladies I hadn't even thought it could just be a sheath... Your very right ! Yep sometimes it looks like a whole little nail/claw but it's just in fact a bug thick upper layer :-)
