On April 29th I had to take Parki to the vet as she seemed to be going downhill rapidly and refusing food. He gave her an ab injection plus a steroid to stimulate her appetite which is certainly did until a few days ago.
Yesterday she started going downhill and not eating again :(
I phoned out of hours this morning and they said to bring her in. We were there for nearly three hours and she got a thorough check during this time and blood tests. The bloods were fine apart from a slight raise in sugar levels indicating stress.
She then had another ab injection and metacam.
She has only eaten a little bit so if she does not eat more will phone vet in the morning :(
-
I am sorry to hear this Alison, such a worry for you
-
Am so sorry to hear this  Very much hoping that your lovely girl's appetite improves quickly Alison
-
Alison, how's our lovely girl this morning?
Am sending soothing thoughts for you both.
-
Thank you
She was at the bottom of the stairs to greet me this morning but seems a bit weak and has lost more weight :(
I held a bowl of water for her and she drank a lot, so very pleased about that. She has had a few licks of food but the water was more important.
If she does not start eating today will contact the vet
-
C'mon Parki, Lass - get noshing.
-
I have just told her, :thanks:
-
I have just told her, :thanks:
Good, I hope she takes note!
-
Thanks  She has just drank the broth from Gourmet's chicken soup pouch for cats . Still not eating properly but at least she has had some goodness :)
-
It's a start, Alison.
-
Hope she's back to normal tomorrow!
-
Keeping fingers crossed for Parki and sending tons of get well vibes
-
Thank you everyone, all your good wishes are much appreciated
Parki has just had a little bit more to eat and as you say Sue it is a start
-
How is Parki this morning Alison? Has she had anything more solid to eat? Thinking of you both.
-
Thank you Sue  She does seem a bit more livelier this morning and just lapped some of the 'soup' pouch ;D
It seems she is happier to eat when I hold the dish up to her when she is on a chair :)
-
Of course. If you could do that standing on one leg too, that would probably help. ;)
Good girl, Parki.
-
Just made me wonder whether she has any arthritis in her neck, which is why she likes you holding the dish up? But good news she seems brighter today :)
-
Sue ;)
Heather that is a brilliant point as keep wondering if she has something wrong with her throat, thanks. Will mention that to the vet
-
Yes, great point, Heather. You can buy special dishes now which are on a stand for just such eventualities.
This is one type, but there are others:

-
yes we got something like that for amber when she was ill
-
Thank you so much for link, that looks ideal ;D
I had to take Parki back to the vet this eve and she just wasn't right. Her temp is till up and he felt something in her tum :(
She will have an ultra sound tomorrow and xray with possible op for whatever it might be :'(
Feel gutted :(
-
Sending you both lots of love
-
Thank you Lynn
-
poor Parki, fingers crossed its none too serious and they can help her :Luv:
-
Thank you Heather
-
Oh Alison. I hope with all my heart that she can be helped and is back home with you before long
-
Thank you Rosella, I am missing her so much tonight
-
Just topping up the good vibes for Parki. Thinking of you.
-
good vibes for parki from me too
-
Much appreciated, thank you both
-
Have you heard anything yet Alison?
-
Just heard Paula
I have to see Matt the vet at 5.10 to discuss Parki so feeling jittery and trying not to imagine the worse :(
They did not phone this morning for permission to do op or biopsy which I am holding out for :)
-
Okay Alison. Try not to pre-judge the situation. Let us know how you get on later.
-
Thanks Sue, will hold onto that
-
ooh that is a bit vague, hopefully no news is good news, with Oscar just from feeling around they could tell it wasn't good so hopefully not the case for parki
-
Thanks Dawn, it is vague!
-
Everything crossed for your girl, come on Parki, be well for your Mummy!
-
Thanks Paula, I will be off soon
-
Everything crossed for you here too!
-
Thanks Lynn, just back
Parki has a tumour in her intestine and Matt the vet took a biopsy.
If it is the nasty spreading one she will have 3/4 mths. However it it is the other type it can be removed for a probable cure ;D
She has pain relief and some liquid to help her intestines.
Will just have to wait for Monday when results back.
She is drinking like anything since she came home which is wonderful :)
-
Oh Alison! The next few days are going to be very difficult, I fear. I so hope that the biopsy shows that this is the curable kind of tumour
-
Everything crossed for Parki and for you Alison
-
Lots of healing vibes for Parki and hope she picks up and eats .
-
Alison, was hoping you wouldnt have to play this waiting game, but given that her prospects just now seem 50/50, am sending the strongest of positive vibes for our lovely Parki. You too, as I know you'll be worrying like crazy.
-
Everything crossed for curable.

-
More fingers crossed her for a curable one
-
Alison, I'm so sorry, I've only just seen this thread.
So sorry to hear about Parki :( :( :( I hope the news about the tumour is good
-
Thank you all so much and your lovely comments
Feel quite empty and shocked but trying to make each hour count with Parki.
She is so happy to be home and just wants to sit on my knee.
From a plump cat she is now very skinny
Seems an eternity to Monday :(
-
I'm sorry Alison. The next few days will be agony but I'm keeping everything crossed it is the curable kind.
-
Poor lamb :( Am so sorry Alison. Like everyone else I sincerely hope the tumour can be removed. Monday will feel like an eternity away for you but Parki will just be thinking about her mom's lap bless her
-
oh Alison I'm so sorry to hear this, as you may remember Oscar had the nasty kind and there was nothing to be done but they did say the other kind could be successfully treated so everything crossed for that
-
Thank you All so much
-
Thinking of you
-
Fingers crossed for you both Alison - I understand how you feel. x
-
Thank you
She is still refusing to eat and have tried everything, ham, chicken, several pouches too.
I phoned up the vet earlier and was told to bring her in tomorrow.
I don't think she has drunk any water either during the day.
She did come outside with in the garden earlier but was quite weak and kept lying down.
-
Oh Alison. You must be so very worried
Am so glad you have such a good vet.
-
Alison, thinking of you.
-
Come on Parki get some grub down girl
-
Thank you everyone
Just back from seeing the vet. He gave Parki an anti sickness injection plus an appetite stimulant which is also an anti depressent.
She has lost a bit more weight which is hardly surprising.
It is all a case of waiting for the biopsy results. Our surgery does offer chemotherapy if it is that sort of cancer but do not think I could put her through this. Does anyone else have experience of chemo in cats?
-
I hope she eats something soon
No experience of chemotherapy in cats but it might be worth doing a search on pet forums as I'm sure I've read threads on there about cats having chemo but wouldn't be able to recall specific threads. I suppose it depends a lot on how it's given. If it can be given in tablet form I'd imagine that's a lot easier and less stressful all round. Fingers crossed it won't come to that though
-
My friend's young cat had chemo for lymphoma. She did very well, the chemo made her a bit less bouncy than usual but she didn't seem unwell or unhappy in any way. The cat did really well and the vet has said that they consider her to be cured rather than in remission.
-
Thank you both so much, that is very helpful
She was very wobbly on her legs earlier when she got home but she has actually eaten a few biscuits and some ham, I got from the deli for her :)
He legs are much better now and she had a wander in the garden. The drugs have worked very well and she is obviously much more comfortable .
-
Sending very gentle snoozles for Parki, Alison.
-
Thank you Sue
-
Chemo for cat doesn't give them the symptoms that humans get, apparently they tolerate it really well. Don't lose their fur or feel sick. Hopefully Parki won't need to have it and the results are good :Luv:.
-
Thank you Heather
-
............when she got home but she has actually eaten a few biscuits and some ham, I got from the deli for her :) .The drugs have worked very well and she is obviously much more comfortable .
Like all of us, she will be a great deal happier being at home Alison and so glad the vets were able to make her so much more comfortable :care: :care: :care:
It was quite some years ago now, 10 years and more, that my business partner's young cat Noodles underwent chemo. He was only around 7 years old and she threw everything at saving him with regular trips to the specialists at Bristol University who said his only hope was chemo and my vet gave the treatment as hers did not have the expertise. Sadly it was not a successful outcome but I have no doubt that things have moved on in that field. I do however recall that cats do tolerate chemotherapy better than us. Heather is right and it's very heartening to hear of Lynn's friend's cat responding so well to the treatment.
I've got everything crossed for tomorrow's results for your beautiful girl
-
Thank you Rosella
She has eaten a few biscuits the morning and drunk quite a bit of water ;
I think if chemo is offered when the results are in I would be very reluctant to take it up because of her age. I think great advances have been made in chemo for cats, which is wonderful. Alan , the vet , said that they have a cat that it has given an extra three years to. I think this gives great hope to younger cats for the future.
-
How old is she? :)
-
She will be 16 in October
-
Alison and Parki
I think it is more difficult to make decisions when an older (but not ancient)cat is involved.Whereas one might want to treat a young cat whatever (my friend's cat was just short of her 1st birthday when the lymphoma was diagnosed. She is 5 now) and an ancient cat not at all, these middle years can pose more of a problem. I call these 'middle years' as our last cats lived to be 19 and 20 respectively.
You are the person who knows Parki best. You understand her general state of health and also know how she reacts to basket, car, vet etc.Whatever decision you make will be made out of love, with Parki's best interests in mind. But here's hoping that you don't need to be making those decisions anyway!
-
Thank you Lynn, very helpful words
Parki has just has a few mouthfuls of fresh cod ;D Earlier she had a little ham and a few biscuits during the day ;D Plus lots of water ;D
-
That sounds 'cautiously optimistic' Alison. I will be thinking about you tomorrow
-
Thanks Lynn, she has def made alot of progress today ;D
-
Thanks Lynn, she has def made alot of progress today ;D
I'm really glad to hear that ;D
-
Good news she has eaten today and drunk a lot.
16 is no age these days for a cat, two of mine are 17 and 21. Silvie who is away at the mo having radioactive treatment for her thyroid is only 11, but the vets there were telling me they had treated cats of 20 and 21 for thyroid disease. Years ago they would have written them off. All fingers and toes crossed for a positive result for Parki tomorrow :)
-
Thank you so much heather and Lynn
Wishing Silvie all the best with her treatment
-
Alison, love to you and Parki.
-
Thank you Sue
-
I am glad that she is more comfortable and eating a bit and drinking again, hopefully it is the other kind and can be removed. Thinking of you and Parki, Allison.
Glad that Sylivie is responding well to treatment too.
-
I phoned the vet and it loos like the results will not be in today :-: I will have to be patient, which is difficult :) The biopsy was marked urgent so everything is being done.
Parki , again, is eating small amounts very often. I imagine the meds might have been stimulants as she can't really settle but seems happy with no discomfort.
Thank you Paula
-
oh how disappointing, I'm glad she doesn't seem too uncomfortable though
-
Thanks Dawn, I was really hoping they would be in and the vet thought they would be too
-
Burger. Tenterhooks a little while longer, Alison. Still, never mind if it's the best result we're all hoping for.
-
Oh Alison! I'm so sorry that you have to wait longer for the results :( Does your vet think they will be ready tomorrow, or might it be longer?
-
:( :( Disappointing.
Sending hugs Alison
-
Thanks Everyone was really hoping for today :(
-
Of Course you were, Alison, but hoping you wont be made to wait much longer.
-
Thanks Sue
-
Still have everything crossed for you
-
Thanks Lynn, for you too
The vet is due to call about 3pm
-
Results are in, vet just phoned :-:
Parki does not have lymphoma but carcinoma. The vet spoke for ages, he has a cat, With his guidance I am taking her in at 8.30 for an op tomorrow. If, during the op they find it is worse than thought I will get a phone call and with sadness I will decide that it is best if she does not wake up.
They will keep her in over night for pain relief then the stitches come out a wk later. There is a risk of leakage and that would mean another op as they are rejoining her intestine up.
She can't eat after 9pm tonight :-:
As I know everyone will understand my brain is in a whirl
-
Oh Alison,
Everything crossed that it is as minor a procedure as can be   . Poor Parki.
-
oh Alison yes of course we understand, here is hoping that she sails through the op and recovers quickly
-
Thank you both very much
-
Alison, not what you wanted to hear, I appreciate, but all is not lost, for sure. Your vet sounds empathetic and that counts for much in my book. For what it's worth, I think your decision making is spot on.
-
Thank you Sue, that means a lot
-
Oh Alison  I hope her surgery goes well and she's home with you asap. It sounds as though your vet is a good one.
-
Alison
-
Thank you Susanne and Lynn
-
Hope all goes well tomorrow and she is back with you.
-
Not the best of news Alison. I know you will do right by your girl if you have to make that hard decision. My thoughts will be with you tomorrow
-
All fingers toes and paws crossed for Parki to make it through surgery. One of my stable cats had a similar operation a good few years ago, had a tumour cut out and her intestines stitched back together. Sadly though it turned out to be lymphoma and she went downhill after that. Hopefully the carcinoma won't have spread and your vet can remove it all ok :Luv:
-
Thank you all so much, your thoughts mean a lot
-
Good luck for tomorrow. I'm going through a very similar thing with Kylie right now, so know how you feel. She is on hunger strike, terrible diarrhoea, rapidly losing weight again. She is in for ultrasound next Wednesday and possibly a digital x-ray (they won't risk a biopsy with her). My vets are in the process of moving, hence the delay. All we can do is try to be positive
-
Thanks Mark
I know how you feel with Kylie and hoping her results will be good. Will be thinking of you all next Wednesday
-
Thinking of you today, Alison, and hope you get the best possible result for Parki.
Couldn't get on earlier as no internet access at home
-
Hoping that Parki's op goes well today and that it can all be removed. Thinking of you Alison.  , any idea of when she will be out of theatre?
Also sending all best wishes and hopes to you and Kylie, Mark.
-
Thanks all. I didn't mean to hijack Parki's thread. Thinking of you and Parki today Alison x
-
start your own mark, would like to keep up to date with lovely Kylie
-
Thanks so much everyone  I have just had to let Parki go as the tumour had spread so much, feel my heart has broken :'(
-
Alison, treasure, my heart goes out to you. I know that you were half expecting this, but it still comes as an absolute shock. It may sound like platitudes to you just now, but you gave Parki so much love and affection, she wanted for nothing. The decision you've made was taken from love, as everything you've done for her has been.
That said, it does nothing to ease the pain, and the emptiness left behind that you have to handle.
-
Thank you Sue
-
My heart is broken for you Alison
-
Thank you Dawn
-
So sorry.  It doesn't help your pain knowing that it's the right decision.
