Title: Riley poorly and staying at the vets :(
Post by: Tiggy's Mum on July 14, 2012, 18:50:02 PM
Had to take Riley to the out of hours vets earlier today and they've kept him in :(

He had been outside eating long grass as he does regularly, he came in and started to make the 'I'm going to be sick noises' which is quite normal. Except he only managed to get a few blades of grass up despite trying to be sick about ten times. He then started putting his tongue in and out like a snake and frothing at the mouth before doing a poo in his bed (I think he was trying to get something out by being sick and his body tried to get it out the other end). Then he started panting whilst he was laying on his sides and his chest was going up and down really noticeabley.

Not sure what's wrong with him but my gut feeling is that it's connected to him eating this really long grass. Even though LuLu is still here the house feels really empty without him  :(

Thanks Angie, they said they would ring later this evening, I'm going to ring at 8pm if I haven't heard from them. I asked if I could stay to help settle him in to the kennel but they said it was handover time with lots of emergencies so basically No!

It's my normal vet surgery but is run by VetsNow out of hours, they gave me an estimate of them keeping him there til midday tommorow (took him in about 5:30pm) ... £460  Thankfully I'm insured and even if I wasn't I'd find the money but even so

I do hope he is OK and is that just for watching him!

Misas bill was about £400 to have xrays and scans after loosing his voice and  wretching, thoiught he had some grass caught but he didnt, just had a sore throat and laryngitus, needed convenia jab and something else and he recovered very quickly.

Thanks both, hopefully not too long til they ring and can put my mind at rest.  I noticed a QR code at the bottom of the paperwork they gave me, I scanned it and you can see everything they write in his notes - nothing since 6.30 where the handover vet agreed to wait and see effects of drugs administered before any invasive procedures are considered - technology eh!

I do hope he is OK and is that just for watching him!

Yep! He has had two injections which are around £10 each, the £460 quote includes a theoretical sedation @ £40 if they need to look for anything causing him to wretch but the rest is made up of out of hours fee, consult fee and 'patient care'. Like I say I would find the money even if he wasn't insured but the costs involved for out of hours are frightening.

Jeez, Helen. Hope the little guy is OK. Does sound like he's got some grass twisted round his intestine, doesn't it.  :scared:

Hope they can sort him out but it may mean some minor surgery. Thank God you have insurance.

I used our VetNow in London and actually they were brilliant. I know they get a bad rep elsewhere but the vet I saw was totally professional and only gave Tufty the treatment he needed. OK it cost, but it was a severe UTI and we otherwise might have lost him  :( I like to think of it as CreditCardNow.

Everything crossed now for Riley  :crossed:

Mister bill was £600  for a day as it was on a Sunday that included 4 xrays .

Hope you get some good news soon.x

Thanks so much for all the well wishes, they really are very much appreciated

I'm pleased to report that they worked and Riley is back home  :wow: The vet rang and said he hadn't been sick at all since he'd been there and other than a fast breathing rate seemed fine. She said there was a big strand of grass in the carrier mixed in with mucous that he'd chucked up on the way there and she reckons that was caught in his throat. He did throw up on the examination table a few times (including one very large puddle on the floor  :naughty: ) so they can see I'm not a hypochondriac... hopefully!

When I collected him the vet showed me the strand of grass and compared to his usual 'output' it was actually quite small!  So it seems that the grass munching was indeed the culprit, normally he munches on it then chucks up and bounces back outside to play but this time it seems to have got stuck on the way back up. When I cleared up the 'poo' it was in fact grass blades covered in a poo coating!

Here's a few pics of him taken earlier today just a few hours before his yowling/vomiting/panting/pooing episode

Post by: Tiggy's Mum on July 14, 2012, 22:26:05 PM
Thanks everyone

Riley is sulking under the bed upstairs and Lu is down with me so he hasn't noticed the vet smell yet, last time Riley stayed in Lu was quite hissy with him for a day or two afterwards which was a bit upsetting. Hopefully he wasn't there long enough this time to pick up the smell.

It really was quite frightening, he often upchucks grass and I just try and get a bit of kitchen roll under him and it's over in 30 seconds - this time he had foam and drool hanging off his face, he was howling and sticking his tongue out, combined with the panting I thought I was going to lose him  :scared:

Before I realised how bad it was I was a bit annoyed as at 11am I had hired a rug doctor and cleaned the carpets, by 5pm he was being sick on the carpet in various places as he ran from spot to spot throwing up - obviously I couldn't care less about the carpet now but before I realised how bad he was I was  :tired:  >:(

Hmmn, now he won't come out from under the bed  :shy: I've been checking on him every so often and he seems OK but normally he wouldn't be able to resist coming when I call him.  Hope he's OK under there as there is zero chance of me reaching him and the mattress is way to heavy to lift off completely.

Helen - have just seen this.  How's Riley this morning?  What a horrible scare for you.  Am hoping our bestest little guy is feeling much more like his usual self today and not too phased by his vet visit.

Hugs for all three of you

Ain't that the truth  :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2:

How is he Helen?  Hoping none of the previous occurrence overnight?  :scared: and that Lu will forgive the weird vet smell quickly ..........  I thought I had remembered right that there was a vet smell reaction in the past.  Strange how much they are governed by smell more than any other sense isn't it  :-:

It's a lovely day here today and hope they can go for a nice wander about the garden where's there's lots of lovely smells but hoping the grass munching is kept under control  :shify:

He's still under there  :( He ALWAYS sleeps on my bed at night but didn't come out at all,  he's never sulked when he's been to the vets before so I think he's gone under there due to feeling unwell, he hasn't eaten either. I put some water under there which he has drunk, he lost so much liquid yesterday he must ahve been dehydrated.

If he's no better by the morning he'll have to go back to the vets.

Im so sorry I missed this. I really hope he's ok now and come out from under the bed. I know Mogs used to hide away when she felt ill and when she'd been to the vet (Amber just likes to be under the bed when I want her)
I hope he's drunk and eaten something soon. As we know as humans when you feel really sick you dont want to be sociable or eat or anything but it passes and I hope thats what it is

Poor Riley. Is it possible he ate something other than grass, that didn't agree with him?

Poor Riley. Is it possible he ate something other than grass, that didn't agree with him?

I don't think so, the garden is catproofed so no access to any other food etc When he came in to be sick I'd just rug doctored the carpets so was keen for him not to chuck up on the clean carpets so tried to put some well aimed kitchen roll under him. This distracted him and it's almost like he couldn't get the grass up on the first few goes so it's got stuck? Not blaming myself it's just that normally he chucks it up no problems but this time when he couldn't get it up it triggered the frothing/droolong/panting which he doesn't normally do.

I think he still feels a bit fragile as the vomiting was really quite violent and imagine his tummy will be a bit sore still. He's just so sociable it's unheard of for him to have no human contact in 24 hours  :(

sorry to hear Riley hasn't been well, and hope he is back to normal soon.     To be honest I blame grass for making my Karlo ill last year.     {Remember he had problems walking and was eventually found to have a very bad belly and was eventually found to have IBD}.    It kept coming and going as well [probably cos he destroyed one lot of grass and then had to wait for another lot to grow].  A couple of weeks before he became ill I bought some cat grass seeds and sowed some.     When I brought them into the house for the cats he went crazy for it, within days he became ill.    I've never let them have any since I realised the possible connection.

It's evil stuff!  >:( I do cut the lawn regularly but the rockery is literally at waist height with stray grass - at first I left it as it was 'jungle like' for them but it's got longer and longer and there hasn't been a dry day when I'm off to get rid of it all (it will need hand pulling). One things for sure they won't be going back out til it's done!

I think the vet thought I was exagerating when I said how much he eats - she said she found a 'really long' bit in the carrier mixed up with mucous but it really was a teeny bit in comparision to his normal offerings!

Don't know how I missed this - I saw it and thought it was an old thread for some reason.

Porr Riley and poor you.

I hope he's feeling better now and eating again.   Biggles had a sudden panting episode earlier this year with his eyes rolling and was generally out of it and off his food.  The emergency vet treated him for a resoiratory infection even though his temp was normal and his lungs sounded OK.  When he saw our usual vet the day after she thought it might be a blade of grass stuck under his palate and said that was quite common.  Fortunately whatever it was went away of its own accord so I hope Riley's does the same.

sorry I missed this Helen, glad he is ok, Tilly had a similar thing a couple of years back but in her case she was fine by the time we got to the vet - she was foaming at the mouth and her tongue was hanging out so far I was convinced she had swallowed a bee but grass was what the vet decided and it had obviously worked its way down by the time we got to the vets!
