Title: Humphrey! Please, not another sad case like Sydney!
Post by: Canterbury_cats (Sharon) on November 29, 2006, 20:57:49 PM
Hello all

Only a few days after losing Sydney, we pick up Humphrey.

A very skiiny un-neutered blacka and white tom, very grubby with a large wound/sore/abscess on his neck & tail. He has very pale (gums), dehydrated & was drinking out of a puddle, but he is the most friendliest puss ever, despite his situation.

Humphrey is now at one of our vet practices, and is clear with FIV etc, but blood work is showing something not right ! High white blood cell count points to "maybe" cancer.  We fear the worse.  Test results back on Friday, so please everyone positive vibes for Humphrey, we have had more then our fair share this year of terminally ill cats.

Its heartbreaking!!!

Oh, crumbs, that'd be so very sad. Possibly the high WBC count could just be because of a severe ongoing infection - fingers (and paws) crossed for a swift recovery and a long and happy 'retirement' somewhere.  :Luv:

Sending lots of positive vibes for another special kitty.

Sharon do you think you're very special foster carer, Karen, will be able to take this kitty in or is it a bit soon after Sydney for them to think about another foster yet?

Hello all
Will keep you all posted on Humphrey's progress. He is eating and seems jolly and fine friendly fella, but there is obviously something go on. Vet couldnt feel any lumps or bumps.

Hope to get a clearer idea of things on Friday as I said, but whatever we wont give up on the chappie.

One of our volunteers Isobel who happens to be a vet nurse is taking care of him, as she works at the practice he is now staying at.  So be assured he is getting extra attention, and even she adores him already.

But keep those positive vibes coming as Humphrey may need them.

As some one said the high white blood cell count could be his body fighting the infection in his neck & tail, sure hope so.

This is an update from Isobel (who is an vet nurse at the vets Humphrey is at)

Humphrey - he is pretty much the same, maybe not quite as ravenous! I have treated him now for fleas & worms & he is on some antibiotics for his skin. I spoke to Emma (other vet at Bourne) & she thinks he may come right yet. It would be an idea to repeat his blood test next week to see if his white cell count is reduced.

Maybe a glimmer of hope. Keep up those positive thoughts people!

So sorry to hear about Humphrey, hopefully things will be ok for him!

Does a high white bloodcell count always point towards cancer?

We had a cat die of cancer last year, and a few months ago Mouse was showing all the same symptoms, losing weight, sleeping lots etc.

We had the vet run blood tests and they said he had a high white bloodcell count which they said meant he needed worming as he may have had tapeworms, and that he will just always be a skinny cat, so we took their word for it and it was left at that.

Now he's fine, happy and healthy, has put on weight aswell, but should we be worried that it could be cancer afterall?

Post by: Desley (booktigger) on December 02, 2006, 18:29:04 PM
High white blood cells dont always mean cancer - they can mean infections. If your cat is happy and looking better, I wouldn't worry, but if you do want your mind put at rest, the only way to do it is with a vet visit.

Thats what we are hoping Des, that living rough for so long his ammunity is abit low.  Isobel tells me she will go in and see him tomorrow but he seems fine in himself although the abscess looks abit nasty.  I have been told he is adorable!

Humphrey is still at the vets and they will do further blood tests tomorrow. If nothing else needs doing vet wise we hope to bring him into foster care until we can get to the route of his problems.  He is on antibotics. May here more on Tues.

Hello all
Sorry to report that Humphrey's results are inconclusive and his anemia is still very bad. I have just spent a long time on the phone with Isobel both wondering what to do next.  We cannot do any xrays or open him up due to blood lost.  The vets think it is still some kind of cancer but we just dont know what more tests we can do.  He will go on steroids for the next few days.  I am doing my best to find him a home for a while just incase things improve on steriods, rather then him staying at the vets.  Trouble is we may already be too late.

What to do for another terminally ill cat? it would be rotten to put him in a pen, he needs a home, for whatever time we can give him.  Its soooooooo annoying that we cannot do any further tests at the moment anyhows. He seems fine in himself though.  However, if the anemia stays high he will in time suffer from breathing problems.

My this is such a hard job sometimes!

Aww, I am so sorry to hear things aren't looking good - am puzzled by not being able to do x-rays cos of blood loss though, there isn't any with an x-ray. Fingers crossed with finding him a placement.

Could be if they wanted to inject him with contrast fluid.

I'm utterly ignorant about it but are blood transfusions not possible if a healthy donor can be found?
Title: Re: Humphrey! Please, not another sad case like Sydney!
Post by: Desley (booktigger) on December 04, 2006, 18:56:55 PM
Seems odd for an x-ray though, esp if they are looking for a tumour. I dont think blood transfusions are that common in cats, I do remember reading something once, and am just researching something, so will see if I can find anything out at the same time.

Its alwys the oldies who pull my heart string despite having 30 under 10 but older cats will be on top of our wish list for 2007 once we are more settled afterall there's always room for one more we never say never well I don't and Robins just smiles and moves on! :)

I know the feeling well. Three years ago I rescued a poor cat along the canal at this time of year, took him to the vets but he died just after Christmas, after one week with me. My only consolation was that I was able to give this poor puss a comfortable home for the last week of his life. It is indeed heartbreaking.

We wanted to move Humphrey today to a foster carerer, but the vet have discovered he is bleeding internally abit. Thus he is now still at the vets trying to do an xray and see what the problem is. We may already be to late for Humphrey and bleeding internally is not a nice way to surcombe to end a life. We thus cannot move him until we know more and if the bleeding can no longer be controlled the outlook for Humphrey is pretty grim.  I so feel for this fella, its kind or heartbreaking that he may never get to a home.

Whatever the decision Humphrey deserves a mention for his courage and I hope the vet seems a glimmer of hope, rather then call it a day.

Keep everything crossed for this fella!

Humphrey is still with us, although at the vets still. His xray was inconclusive so another one will be taken tomorrow. However, the vets feel it may be a tumour in his lungs, which is why it is so difficult to see. There isnt much to be done with such an outcome.

What is so heartbreaking is that this fella dosnt look poorly, he looks unkempt and unbit worse for wear but is still cleaning himself and eating okay.  That makes it such a hard decision to make, but we dont want him going into a home then finding him bleeding internally, because that would be terrible and cause him much distress and suffering,  and in no time he woundnt be  able to breath. We hoped to put him with a fosterer who is a nurse so deals with these kinds of things, but still I feel we shouldnt let our emotions get so wrapped up, that we forget Humphrey in all this, but that I find so hard to do.

Will let you know tomorrow if I can about Humphrey, but if all those positive thought counted for something, we may see him in our care.

Update!

Humphrey is still with us & his gums look a bit pinker today! He is back on the steroids & there has been no repeat of the bleed. Xray revealed nothing in his tummy. So a real mystery, now vets begin to think leukemia.  If okay tomorrow will be moved in the next day or so to one of our fosterers. Pls keep up those wishes for him.

Hello all
I am not a vet nurse, but when I asked the vet nurse about leukemia and that he was fine when tested negative for it. I think she went on about a different type of cancer leukemia or something.I suspect there are two different things. Perhpas someone can put me right on this.
However, we have now ruled out cancer of the lungs etc nothing showed on xrays.

If he comes into foster care I will get some photos of this lovely lad.  Been a the vets a week now and heavens knows what the outcome would of been if he was not brought into us, no doubt he would of died suffering a great deal.

Hello all
Just wanted to tell you that Humphrey is now in the care of one of our fosterer and seems to enjoy the extra TLC. Considering this fella was on the verge of "calling it a day" I am amazed. We still dont know what is making him so anemic, but there has been no further bleeding.  Have not had a chance of photos yet, but been told he is certianlty a cat "of the streets" but for a tom seems to have a loveable and very affectionate nature. Not sure what the long term future for Humphrey is, or whether we will ever get to the bottom of his illness, suppose take one day at the time.  Our finances have taken abit of a dent with this one, but I think we have given him  a good chance.

Just shows you what "positive thoughts" can do and lets hope this is abit of a Christmas ending.

Sorry Roz, some of my postings are abit "sad" i agree, however, but keeping you updated of progress I shed some positive light on things.  As we all know rescue is all about "heartbreak", and I am still fairly new at this, so I treat all those "poorly" cats as if they were my own.  Thanks for this fella goes to Isobel though are welfare officer who went in on her days off to see him and keep his spirits up, despite working and having 2 kids to take care of.  We are lucky to have her on board, and I know she finds it difficult to "fit everything in".  Generally though us three, Isobel, Gillian and me are extreme "soft touches" and never say never to the end.  Which makes our finance person scream lots!  However, when you dont deal with this cases you often can feel abit more level headed, but I never do!

Fingers crossed for him and yes, I do understand exactly how you feel....and I have tremendous respect and gratitude for what you and your colleagues do in Rescue.

Humphrey is a fab cat, an adorable youngish puss who just loves fuss and quiet happily spends his time on a lap and purring.  Humphrey is doing well, but he still have a horrid open ulcer on his neck and is still abit worse for wear. He is on meds and is going back for more tests this Thurs. You would not think there was anything wrong with him. He drinks loads of water (not a good sign perhaps) eats and purrs all the time and I think adores his new mum! He follows her round like a dog.  Unlthough still not neutered and we dare not risk (until we know more) mixing him with other cats, he is with a fosterer who is at home most of the day.  He will be staying put with her throughout Christmas and we will perhaps see how his gets on in the New Year.  We still do not know whats up with him, and the vets are scratching their heads.  Although we can do further tests, we don't know still what we are dealing with. As for the future of Humphrey well we just don't know. But I can is such a great fella and deserves all that we can give him. We doubt his no more then 5 yrs old.  His sores are improving but look abit worse then they are.

BTW anybody involved with CP rescue, have you ever used one of the high tech Vet hospitals as referrals. I realise that costs alot of money, but Humphreys case is kind of rare (or so they think) they may have an opinion on his treatment or care.

Has anyone used those specialist places at all?

BTW Mark his sores do look horrid but they are better then they was a week ago. Trouble is he keep picking them. The one of his neck is quite big but is nicely healing.  Not sure how he got these, cat bites or maybe something to do with his condition.

Even from shaving, clapton scratched his neck so much it bled for weeks - I guess their claws aren't the most hygienic things to get in open wounds! - fingers crossed it gets better - maybe they will have to give him a collar (horrible things  :( )

Hello all
Further investigation with Humphrey seems to point to a ummunity defence problem (very rare) in essence his body is attacking itself.  There is no cure but continued treatment of steroids should help him, although not sure how long this can continue though. Vets are still giving him a guarded outlook, and his wound on his chest is abit nasty.  We are seeing how he does after Christmas and then maybe if we get a chance to neuter him the wound on his neck with be examined and bio opsy done.  The wounds may be related to his problem though.

So although its great news taht he has got better, he still has an underlying problem somewhere which isn't curable, nor do we know how long in truth he has. But let us be glad we have given him a home. I tell  you he seems to adore his foster mum and seems to follow her around like a dog.  He has this really weird moew not at all what you expect from a Tom! But he is absolutely adorable, I would have him here if my cats would allow but because we are not 100 percent sure of his condition we are not mixing  him with other cats.  He is also a Tom and not everyone can tolerate a tom being around.

Humphrey now adorns our Chistmas cards and I have started a appeal (abit on a small scale) for funds for his on going treatment.

But you are right he is an adorable fella and everyone loves him to bits.  But then I always have  a soft spot for the needy!

It's understandable that your underlying tone is not particularly optimistic but this dear puss is being looked after extremely well and there isn't anymore you can do; let's just hope he does come through but, if not, he's been spoilt rotten along the way.

Fingers crossed there is a way to help Humpf heal totally and have a wonderful loving life.

OMG! Tan I didn't expect that, there are so many needy cats out their.

My only reason for doing something this end (and though Cat Chat pages where we have our rehoming list) is that its hard to believe we have had four cases like Humphrey this year ( i consider that alot but some larger brances probably woundn't).  Louie (who had throat cancer) Izzy who had thyroid problems, Sydney who poor fella had many things including cancer and now Humphrey, all cases that we have taken on for hospice care. Perhaps we should sometimes consider calling it a day, but my God is that hard and I for one don't worry about finances. But then again we get money from our members and we should bare in mind that its there to help cats but in a wise manner. I would be hopeless with putting a figure on anything.  Hope you get what I am saying.

i wish you could all have a chance to met Humphrey because he is a adorable fella.

Something I have been thinking about for while and perhaps this isnt the right thread to put it on. But if someone out there was able to come up with an electronic newsletter to send to members (with people putting in articles etc) say once a month (or every otehr month). A small subscription charge perhaps to help towards time and resources. The profit from that could go towards a "emergency fund" so to speak that was given out on a basis of need (if you get my point). There is so much good stuff going on here and points and adviice like on Cat Chat, but not everyone has the opportunity to read through the hundreds of posts.  Just a thought I would share and see what any of you thought!  I am sure there is someone out there with publicity skills and with 350 odd members it may not be to difficult to get articles.

Thanks for everyones wishes for Humphrey will give him a big hug when I see him next! Took a load of donated treats to him the other day as well.

Yes good idea, would need someone with the time and writting skills to do it, love to but me no have much spare time and me wrtting skills well ya all prob know me spelling and gramma is awful ha ha!!

I wanted to do a donations section for any peeps that would like to help out with any rescue's furbabe that needs help. We did something simular for Denis on CC. So for those occasions where there is a cat rescue centers babe in need of expensive ops etc, all you rescues are very welcome to add their appeal to the fundrasing section telling us how we can give donations for them. It will purely be a volentary donation if peeps wanted to help and not compulsery or for any spesific donation amount.
I can put an appeal in for Humphrey for ya  if ya would like Sharon but need to know how we get donations over to you for him. Do we send to vets etc, or is there a donations button (ie like a paypal) one we could use?

Bless the adorable lad. I sooo hope he can recover to good health.

That reminds me anyone know how Denis is doing???

Oh Sharon,

What a rollercoaster of a ride this poor little babe is having...bless his sweet little paws.  I really did think it looked like he was on the road to recovery.

Will be keeping everything crossed for his continual survival and good health.   He will be in my daily thoughts and prayers.  So pleased to hear that he is happy in his foster home and I hope his sores heal up soon...poor little love. At least it looks like he is going to enjoy a happy Christmas....and hopefully many more of them :)

I wish I had known that he was on your Chrissie cards cos I would have ordered some...but guess it's too late now.

I will be happy to contribute towards his health care.  I think a donation section for needy or really poorly cats is a great idea and one that I have been secretly wishing to see for some time.

I would also love to help out with the newsletters but, again, like everyone else my time is very limited and such a scheme would need the services of someone who is able to produce the work on a consistent basis...not every now and again but I am here to help in emergency situations...if that helps.

Lots of love

Roz

Hi All
Update from Humphrey's fosterer.  He is due to go back to the vets for another blood test next week. But at the moment, fingers, paws and anything else crossed for him.

Humphrey is doing really well sores are healing slowly except for the one under his neck as i had to put a collar on him to stop him attacking that one! He really does look like the injured soldier now as he has a bit of tubigrip underneath to stop the collar rubbing!
He gets on very well with the puppy, lots of rubbings and sleeping beside eachother on the sofa. He is very observant and really does look as if he is always watching us and taking it all in.

On behalf of Humphrey want to wish all ofyou on this forum a very happy Christmas.  Its been good to hear from all of you.  Although there dosnt seem to be many forum members from down South way, you have all given us abit of inspiration during the last few months and I hope that you all have a successfuly 2007.

Humphrey continues to do well and I hope to go and see him again this coming week.  I sit here with my lovely Leo on my lap while I type and think about all those cats we were unable to "save" this year.  So we don't forget their passing.

Louie, Izzy, Suzy, Lenny, black puss at the vets, Brucie, Blue (I gave her a name before she was PTS), Sydney. may you all be remembered by someone!  However, just yesterday I received a card and photo of Tazz one of the first rescue cats we took in, Tazz had a broken knee joint, but as on one took  him to the vets, it healed by itself, so that he could hardly walk.  We took him in and after major surgery his leg got better (although far from perfect) ,  he was homed and is now dearly loved but a young couple. His leg given him uddles of character, the photo was of a such an handsome ginger puss, it was hard to believe it was our Tazz. Tazz was one of the few cats that were on the verge of staying with me, so seeing him so well gives me hope for the coming year.

Merry Christmas to all of you involved in rescue  you are doing a fantastic job, and Humphrey sends purrs and wishes to you all.

Hi all
Humphrey had a lovely Christmas with his fosterer family. He went to the vets on Wed and his blood count and anemia is about the same. Have reduced his steriods from 5mg a day to just 2.5mg to see how that goes.  The wounds on his neck are not healing and thats all to do with this immune problem he has that is very rare (it has a very long name!).  He was given loads of antibotics and with luck in 2 weeks time we aim to get him neutered and vac, we can then perhaps think about the possibility of rehoming him  However, he will be on steroids the rest of his life (he takes them very well in his food) and as before he could go down hill or could be with us for a few years yet!  CP would be willing to pay for all future associated vet treatment for Humphrey and he will need to be an only cat, with someone that realises that he may have a limited time with them.

However, can you all believe he has made it this far!! Aim to visit him next week and see how he is going, he is a real fusspot! Eats well and is now a normal weight for his age (estimated around 3 to 5 yrs old perhaps abit less).

Perhaps if we get to the neutering stage and he recovers well I will start seeing if someone out their may be wiling to take him on! A special person indeed. Don't think the steroids he is on are very expensive, just that he will constant check ups for his anenemia etc.

All in all Humphey has had a good Christmas consiidering that if someone had not rang us up that day, he wouldn't be with us. Must be fate i say!

Happy New year to you all, I think I am being dead boring as no one has asked me out for a party (although not a real party person!)!!!!

Just to let you know that Humphrey still contineus to improve. He is being neutered and vac on Friday and then moved onto another fosterer as we are so out of room. Humphrey is still a lovable soul, his wounds are abit better and his steroids are keeping him under control. I have photos but no dime yet to upload them.

I heard about Cringle today and am so sorry, as it sounds he was also another cat that deserved a little longer on this earth.

Today  has not been good as we have been  inudated with calls, and we are brimming at the seams already.

Thank goodness this little babe is doing okay.  I hope the wounds start to heal up more quickly soon. I wonder what the problem is there? Have the vets given you any more indication?

I read that his fosterer is taking on the two elderly Persians.  I hope little Humphrey finds his new forever home when he is better, bless him.

Thanks for the update Sharon.

Lots of love to you both

Hi all
Humphreys illness is one reason that he wounds dont heal very well. He has this special spray on him now that helps abit, its all silvery and smells abit weird on him.  The vet thinks he is well enough to be done and sorted, and we are moving him onto another indoor fosterer that he can adore, as the fosterer he is with now has the 2 persians in need of tLC and we are running out of room to put them all in.  We dont want to overload our fosterers so thats the plan to move him.

After his op and when we know he is okay I am planning to do abit of a homing drive for  him. Perhaps the papers or something, to get him a new home.  He will be on long term foster care with us and we will pay all his vet expenses associated with his condition.  Humphrey with luck should be with us a while yet.
