Common lizard

Common lizards (also known as viviparous lizard) can live almost anywhere, but they prefer reasonably warm places with
good basking sites and are frequently found on the stony ballast around railway lines. Adults can reach 14 cms and
colouration can include shades of brown, grey and dark green. They are insect eaters and also eat small snails.

Losing their tails

Lizards have the ability to 'self amputate' their tails for protection. The process is known as 'autotomy'. Here's what
happens. The tail bones have a special weak spot where a contraction of the muscles at that point causes the bone
to break and the tail to become loose. The separated tail continues to wriggle for several minutes which holds the
attention of the predator while the tail-less lizard makes its escape. The lizard will grow a new tail,
(this can take many months) but this is usually more stumpy than the original and less flexible. Slow worms are also
capable of autotomy, but are rarely able to grow a new tail afterwards.

:RIP: Little Lizard, Hope it was quick :(

if it was about 4-5 inches long, iether Brown or Golden coloured with beautiful marking's it would have been a
British Common Lizard, Did the Lizard Detach it's Tail??

Mine went through a time of bringing them home !! I would find either a tail or one without a tail
Everyone told me they were Newts but i wasnt convinced....
So know i know they WERE Lizards

British Common Lizard, Did the Lizard Detach it's Tail?? cause that is it's only method of self defense, in the wild
when a predator attack's, It will detach it's tale and the nerves make it twitch and jump about all over the place
( I found this out when I was young, and was freaked out to discover I had managed to catch just a tale :wow: )
if it is a common Lizard? It is a very strange time for them to be out cause they Hibernate during the winter.
then again in saying that it hasn't been that cold of late...

Poor little Moggs is still waiting for it though and it has been well over 30 mins now ..he hasn't moved ..I think he just wanted to play :(

I know what you mean

Mine's are indoor and the last time we had heavy rain they sat at the back door watching a frog  :tired: dread to think what they would have done if they could have got out.

I know we all like to think of our pusscats as lovely bundles [which they most certainly are] but they're also natural hunters who most certainly would mean to harm anything they see of as prey  :innocent:. The thing to remember is they don't do it out of malice...they're just doing what comes naturally to them.

Poor little newt  :(

I dont think Moggchops realises he killed it he is sat waiting for it to come back now  :(...makes me really sad about it all as i dont think he would ever actually MEAN to hurt anything :(

Are you sure it wasn't a newt? I know there are lizards in the UK, but I think newts are more common.

Either way, poor little thing!

Are you sure it was a Lizard and not a slow worm?  Did it have legs?

 :(...

Somehow a lizard managed to breaks it way into my house and what a stupid mistake that was  :(

My 4 cats pounced on it ...mainly the normally quiet and retiring Moggchops pounced on it before i even realised what it was ....thank the heavens for my OH and his heroic attempts at rescuing it although he was unsuccesful and the poor little thing was already dead  :(...

There was me thinking that 1) Lizards in the UK were non existent at this time of year and 2) that having houses cats doesn't mean you wont get presents  >:(

A very sad Lisa x
