Look blue to me ;)
-
That first pic of Harry is cool :)
-
Yes it does look blue- the carpet that is lol
I am forming a grey gang, Lukey and Riley where are you?
-
Well Ben's not proud - he's a blue colourpoint, but he won't mind if I sneak him into this GREY thread LOL  (excuse the bits stuck to his fur, this was when he'd just rolled in the mulch!)
-
He is a lovely little chappie :wow:
-
Well Gillian if Ben does not accept being called blue and will get grubby just to prove a point that he's not posh I think he is now in the gang. ;)
Come on show me the greys ;D
-
Awww bless Ben :evillaugh:
Lucas says he has grey bits, does he count? :Luv:
-
Show off ya grey babes and get us put on the list.
Don't need asking twice ;) Harry is an absolute babe :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:
I am forming a grey gang, Lukey and Riley where are you?
We're here, we're here :wow: We're most definitely GREY too, never heard anything so ridiculous - blue cats, that's just crazy

Grey and proud! ;D
Well Gillian if Ben does not accept being called blue and will get grubby just to prove a point that he's not posh I think he is now in the gang. ;)
:thanks: he's glad to be in with the grey crowd LOL!
-
Simons not sure about being a blue cat....
-
I'm afraid Simon is going to have to accept that he is blue :shy: I know it's an awful thing to call an innocent cat but there's no getting away from it. Sorry Simon
-
My goodness what a load of trouble makers :evillaugh: :evillaugh: :evillaugh: :evillaugh:
They all look blue to me, sorry :sneaky:
Here is my blue point, definately not grey and also Kocka my first cat on the Bridge now...................thats how I first came across blue cos on her vaccination form its said DLH Blue and I asked em what did that mean and they said grey cats are called blue :P :P :P
-
this is blue - sofia maria to her friends. Actually if we are being frank she is grey, but I think Blue is the term if there are no tabby markings... prepared to be shot down in flames. She was hungry at the time I took the photo
-
Ummm she looks black and mine look brown...........sigh, cameras!
-
is this better? - I just thought that was such a cute pic ...
-
I think its ok to say blue when talking peds but when you have a little rouge like Harry then he is grey.
Aww Simon, why so blue?
-
It was a lovely picture ;D
Yes definately blue
Kockas pics were mostly taken before I had digi camera and she used to walk towards the camera so was very hard to get a picture and the light used to change her colour so much.
The light is also changing Duchas colour cos his face and points are quite light.
-
What about we make a deal- Solid colour is blue and with markings is grey ;D
Not many peeps with grey cats? Ya's are all greysist
-
No sorry there is no grey registered for any cat in any cat show, the term is blue and if striped tabby 8)
-
sounds like a deal to me. I adore silver tabbies (grey if you must) but every time I go to get one I end up with a different colour, more because I choose for personality than for colour or type (though prefer not to have a long-hair, despite the lovely Bob)
-
I am sooo tempted to use the magical powers of my BLUE stars and edit out all references to the word
BLUE in everyone's posts and replace with the correct word... GREY :evillaugh:
CC how about we start a poll thread with pics of our gorgeous grey boys and everyone can vote for whether they are grey or blue? :sneaky:
-
Bob is stunning ;D
-
Wow magic stars, I forgot you had those lol
Yes let the people decide.
-
sadly gone to the rainbow bridge. He was 19 when the pic was taken. Shortly before he died. He was a rescue cat from a breed rescue who was more committed to rescue than to knowing her breeds (she told me he was a foreign white) I have since compared photos and concluded he was a turkish angora if anything. He was a sweetnatured cat who had never known about beds or laps until he came to me aged 5. He travelled with me from Coogee Beach, to Grafton in northern NSW to Queensland and finally to New Zealand. He was the quiet achiever - the cat everyone knew was in charge without him ever having to fluff up or hiss or otherwise assert himself. If any strays came into the garden he would just stare them down. He was a lovely cat and much missed... :'(
-
Wow magic stars, I forgot you had those lol
Yes let the people decide.
Shall I start a new thread or shall I see if my magical stars will let me add a poll onto this one? Don't know if they will as they are only blue ones not grey :evillaugh:
-
Yes add a poll to this, I jumping off now but will check later to let Harry know. ;D
-
Ooh rebellion! ;D
If we're going to be rebellious about this, perhaps we should be consistent too. If it's blue, it needs to be red and not ginger ;)
Ooh Gill - look what you're stirred up! Bet you're really regretting that decision to put all the colours there now
-
or cream, or champagne if it is a dilute lol
-
Yes I am Susanne

My all time fave picture of her!
-
She is lovely ;D
-
All these pictures of greys is must making me want one more and more :Luv:
Ok how about Grwndi?
He's a dark grey and white tabby, does he count?
-
She's gorgeous, a fine example of a grey cat :) I guess you'd say she's actually 'gray' though being from the US ;D
-
This is the lovely GREY Imogen :Luv:
-
The more the merrier Gwen, don't think we've seen much of Grwndi before - he's a babe :Luv:
And as for you Lilycat, I can't believe you've been keeping Imogen from us for all this time, I sort of imagined her to be a white fluffy, persian like cat. She is an absolute (grey) stunner :Luv:
-
Beautiful BLUE cats ;D
-
Beautiful BLUE cats ;D
who you calling blue? :slap:
-
:sneakin:
-
Thanks Helen :) she is rather beautiful but then I am rather biased ;)
However, knowing her ladyship, I'm sure if Imogen could cast a vote she'd say she was absolutely, definitely BLUE daahhlink :Luv: :Luv:
-
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh thank you Lily ;D
-
or cream, or champagne if it is a dilute lol
Sorry to be pedantic, but cream is cream and is the dilute of red. Champagne is the term the Americans use to describe C.ho.colate Burmese.
The term grey is the correct term to describe the coloration of the standard domestic tabby cat, where the tabby hairs are ticked with black, tan and grey. It is a term solely used for cats with the dominant agouti (tabby) gene who do NOT display any dilute coloration - i.e. your basic tabby cat.
The colour blue is the dilute of the black and applies to both solid and tabby. Unlike the grey colouration of your basic tabby cat, the blue is purely a result of a reduction in black pigmentation in the hairs. Any cat, whether solid or tabby who demonstrates this reduction of pigmentation in its coat i.e. dilution is correctly known as a blue.
-
Here is chalky and moggchops ..Chalky first and then Moggs ..do they count as Grey :)
-
Since when and where have tabbys been called grey?
:boxer: :boxer: :boxer:
-
LOL :P...Worth a try wasn't it they are grey in places lol
-
Since when and where have tabbys been called grey?
:boxer: :boxer: :boxer:
Err, Harry and LuLu are grey tabbies - that's the whole point of this thread  Riley has shadow tabby markings in his grey too - so there :P
Lisa, Chalky and Moggchops are very welcome to join the grey club :) Hope you have voted ;)

This is my bridge boy Mr Thomas, who is a grey tabby.
http://www.post14.f9.co.uk/pics/web_galleries/cats/pages/img_4738.htm
As you can see, this is a completely different colour to Lucas, Riley, Harry, Pearl et al who are all most definitely blue.
-
Sure have ...Lucas and Riley have grown haven't they in too yummy grey babies !!!
-

No, no, no, no, no *shakes head* Thomas is absolutely gorgeous but he is definitely not a grey tabby. He's what I'd call a standard 'tabby' - no colour defined but defo not grey ;D

A standard tabby is a grey tabby - find yourself some cat books and look it up. >:(
-
I'm a bit confused now [it's easily done]....what's Imogen then? Grey or Blue?
-

Imogen is a stunning example of a blue tabby - she's beautiful! :Luv:

I don't need to get a book and look it up! The poll is not the technical definition of blue or grey - it's what colour are these cats ;) Grey seems to be the consensus of opinion at the moment ;D
Lilycat, Imogen is a beautiful grey tabby :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:
-
My cat books dont tell me that >:(
-
:boxer: Blimey, back to your corners, guys! I personally don't use the colour blue for any fur because well, blue is the colour of the sky or the thomson local cat.... :evillaugh: But I'm not very "uppah class!"
-

Don't worry JS it's all in jest... I hope :scared: Don't forget to vote ;)
-
They should do Gilly, the grey tabby is also known as the wild coat variant - look at pics of a Scottish wildcat i.e. Felis Silvestris Grampia and that's your basic grey mackrel tabby.
Grey is a SPECIFIC description of the tabby ticked hairs of the basic tabby coat pattern. Blue describes a completely DIFFERENT form of colouration.

Dis iz Tricky
I got Misty when He was Ickle, I named Him Misty because His coat was a Misty Bluey/Grey !!
Misty is GREY but sometimes (Depending on the Light, He has a Blue tinge ??)
so does that make Him Blue or Grey
Ach, if in doubt, Sit on the Fence ;D ;)
-
Here is a pic of my bridge baby Zookie would she be considered blue then ...I had her down as a dilute tortie ????
-
so does that make Him Blue or Grey
At the risk of sounding like a broken record... Misty is a gorgeous fluffy grey boy :)
-
This is my Gizzy.
Before she moved in with us, she used to live with our neighbours across the other side of the road. At that time we didn't know what her real name was, so we used to call her Grey Kitty, and we have always thought of her as grey. On her vaccination certificate the vet has described her as 'GREY'. ;D
Occasionally she does have a posh day (usually when the sun is shining) when I think her coat looks blue. :evillaugh:
-

Wow, she's gorgeous (I seem to be using that word a lot but if the cap fits :wow:). I'd say she is a dilute tortie but the main colour of her fur is grey - in my humble non professional opinion ;)
This is my Gizzy.... On her vaccination certificate the vet has described her as 'GREY'. ;D
Sylvia, Gizzy is a stunner - that's a great pic of her :)
Very good point about the vet records (more evidence :sneaky:) Lukey and Riley are down as grey tabby and grey & white.
-
To quote from "The Book of the Cat" (ISBN: 0 330 26153 3)
"The tabby is in fact a complex colour built up from two component patterns, one superimposed on the othet, that are goverend by two sets of genes. The underlying pattern is called Agouti and is a universal grey camouflaging pattern found in a great majority of mammal species, most notably the rabbit. It is composed of hairs with a bluish base and a black tip separated by yellow banding. Because of the backwards slope of the hairs this produces the freckled greyish colour between the tabby stripes."
-
A blue cat will have a blue / slate tinge to the coat. You folks are hoisting yourselves on your own petards by admitting the fact...
Also, just to prove a point, and you guys can look it up for yourselves:
The genotype of a standard grey or brown tabby is: A-B-C-D-iiT-/tbtb (the difference is in the polygenes)
The genotype of a blue tabby is: A-B-C-ddiiT-/tbtb
The genotype of a solid blue cat is: aaB-C-dd
The genotype of a blue & white cat is: aaB-C-S-dd
So any cat with the dd gene is blue irrespective of whether tabby or not. Simple and easy to remember. The D gene will either give you a black cat (aa i.e. non-agouti) or a grey / brown tabby (A agouti)
-
so does that make Him Blue or Grey
At the risk of sounding like a broken record... Misty is a gorgeous fluffy grey boy :)
Yes nice to look at but a wee bity unpredictable, the photo is what happen'd yesterday when I decided
to carry my love bundle through the house, and he had other ideas >:( >:( >:(
Hamish would NEVER have done that to me, you could carry Him like a baby on His Back and He would just
Lie there Purring :wow:
Zookie was Beautiful, Sorry for your Loss :(
And Gizzy is a Cracker... or maybe I'm just being Biast :evillaugh: :evillaugh:
-
Can we not just say the lighter shade is grey.
Anyone who ownes a grey cat you are not allowed to perch, stand up for ya babes. Unless you do think of them as blue.
Harry is a dark grey with lighter grey running through his coat and he is tabby, I going to check him out.
Ooops :evillaugh:
-
How do we know if our cat has the DD gene?
-
This thread is hilarious
I agree with Reynard re the technicalities, but I guess you can call your cat whatever colour you want. However, grey and blue are really just 2 ways of saying the same thing - they don't refer to different shades of 'grey'. If you entered a 'grey' cat into the hhold section of a cat show it would be described as blue - because in the cat fancy grey is called blue. The same as ginger is called red. But outside of the cat fancy I guess you can call your cat sky blue pink with purple dots if you like ;D
-

So if Harry is a tabby , why not vote tabby............sigh
-
I have voted grey
My Maisey (pictured below) is dark grey & white tabby....
-
Xanthe is supposed to be silver tabby and white - however most of her body is dark grey at the moment with silver markings (she seems to betting (no she doesn't gamble! I meant getting paler gradually). She's not blue, but my brother's dog is!
-
Well Josh and I are most definately Blue! Do you think I enjoy being called Smokey? Hmmmmm? :evillaugh:
(http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc221/corporalsmokey/SmokeyKitchen-1.jpg)(http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc221/corporalsmokey/joshsmokey1.jpg)(http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc221/corporalsmokey/joshmodel.jpg)

She's gorgeous, a fine example of a grey cat :) I guess you'd say she's actually 'gray' though being from the US ;D
Our dear Smoke is English (and it shows) she was adopted from the shelter down the road, and every day I'm glad I picked her since she is such a sweet cat.
Um, could be gray or grey my spelling has gotten worse since being over here and trying to adapt to the extra letters or strange spelling's you guys have ;)
-
Hey, fighting talk now - what colour is this horse? Grey, white or blue? :evillaugh: :evillaugh: :evillaugh:
-
It's a grey - the horse, that is. It probably started life as a dark grey with dapples and faded as it got older ...
-
Would like to congratulate Maisey and Xanthe on joining the best club in the world :wow: 'Harry's grey gang' :)
Josh and Corporal Smokey, you are both gorgeous but I'm afraid you can't join Harry's gang :( You'll be in our thoughts though...
-
Hey, fighting talk now - what colour is this horse? Grey, white or blue? :evillaugh: :evillaugh: :evillaugh:
Looks white to me :shy:
-
Well, I'm going to keep describing Imogen as a beautiful Grey...because she is :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:
-
Smokey and Josh you are so handsome and of course you are blue ;D
-
and speaking of horses, there is a very old colour known as a blue roan - a lovely and unusual colour for a horse ...
-
Arent' white horses called greys?
-
yes they are
-
Harry, Lukey and Riley, the founder members of 'Harry's grey gang', will be making the official announcement of the poll results tomorrow afternoon :wow: So if you haven't already voted get your votes in now ;D
-

Very definitely, Smokey and Josh - Pearl agrees with you entirely and sends lots of :blow kiss: and thinks the folks who call you both grey are :stupid:
She insists I attach a very comely photo of her good self (her good side, naturally) and says that isn't it brilliant that the Blue Quiz Team are slaves to such wonderful blue cats!
-
See now, Pearl most definitely looks Blue :-:
It's all down to shading I think....Humphrey is officially Black and White but in actual fact he's a very dark brown and white - it's enough to drive you  :evillaugh:
-
Hi,
I must say all your cats are gourgous, i didnt realise there were so many differant types of Gray/Blue cats. I have just got 2 kittens :Luv: :Luv:, a Gray called Star and a Tortie called Twinkle just thought I'd post a pic of my babies since star is Gray/blue?? I'm confused but i think she is Gray, how do you vote in the poll? :) :)
-
I'm confused but i think she is Gray, how do you vote in the poll? :) :)
Most definitely grey and very cute with it too :Luv: There should be a poll at the very top of this page, just click on which category you want to vot for, once you've voted you'll be able to see the results :shify: The announcement for the official colour 'as voted by the people' all our gorgeous babes are will be made later this afternoon :wow:
-
I wonder if I've time to register under a few aliases and vote again... ;)
Jaffa was going to vote but he couldn't remember his password.
-
Looks like the greys are clear winners :sneaky:
Jaffa please try and remember your password,we need as many votes as we can :shify:

Jaffa here!
Auntie Helen - how could you think I would let meowmy use my log in? Do you think I have no scruples? She doesn't know my password anyway. Ok, so I don't either cos I've forgotten it, but I never told meowmy what it was. I can use her log in - me and Mose use it all the time - but I wouldn't let her use mine. And I don't do what she tells me to do either.
Personally, I don't mind being called ginger or red, so it wouldn't matter to me what I was called, but I am on the side of the cats so if most of the cats want to be grey then I would vote grey ;D
-
Ladies and Gentlemen, please may I have your attention.... The votes have been counted and verified and I will now hand you over to the founder members of 'Harry's grey gang' who can reveal that...

Yes let the people decide.
The people have spoken, with a whopping majority of 58.1% of the vote we have a clear winner - grey, the blues limp into second place with just 29%, and last but not least a few people who will be in need of some tweezers 'on the fence' with 12.9%.
-
well congratulations to the greys. I voted for the fence as there were clearly some greys and some blues, but hey, that's referenda for you!! I still say a grey is a tabby and a blue is solid colour (dilute black), but it doesn't really make any difference. Cos they are all gorgeous!!!
-
:na na naa na: :na na naa na: :attention: :attention: :Applause: :cheer:

-
Thats not nice Riley but it did make me laugh
-
Yes, it did tickle me rather aswell...hmmmm.... :P
-
Helen what software are you using to do that?
-
Paint, I only discovered it last week so am getting a bit carried away with it :evillaugh: It's very hard to write with the mouse though, hence the scrawly writing.
-
Paint , right hmmmmmmmmmmmm ;D
-
I was blaming my scrawly writing on trying to use a mouse with your paw. And then of course I realise it's a mouse and that poses me a terrible diemma, eat it or use it for its intended purpose? ;)
-
So glad that common sense prevailed and grey won :)
-
SMOKEY you are :G: :O: :R: :G: :E: :O: :U: :S:, A true blue :coolpics:
my babes at the bridge, they were blue, ish :Luv:

Max has got very unusual legs there Angie (and a particularly handsome face :Luv:), are you sure you haven't been messing around with his pic :shify:
In any case Max is welcome to become an honorary member of the grey gang as his Mum has obviously taught him right from wrong grey from blue :)
As for you Susanne >:( Think I'll see if Tan will put a censor on the B word and change it to grey, a bit like c.hocolate changes to healthfood :evillaugh:
-

This post is fun :evillaugh: If I had 'spotted' it earlier could have added in some silver nope GREY bengals ROFL
-
without a shadow of a doubt they are blue, grey is a dilute of black and true back had its own tone of blue .............so they are blue blue blue.....or maybe they are grey
-
Hehehehehe.......the debate continues
-
Err, no... There is no debate, the people have spoken :)
-
And are still speaking it seems

Not at all ;)
Grey cats in this country seem to be in the minority, I'm off work at the moment with a manflu type illness so have been watching lots of daytime TV especially the likes of Animal Cops Houston / Phoenix / Miami / Detroit etc etc and virtually every kitten up a tree/stuck down a drain/ in a car engine / in a roof type rescue seems to be little grey tabby :Luv: I guess our black and whites are grey tabbies in the US :)
