Title: Eight Lives Left Kitten Rescue Update
Post by: LesleyW on June 21, 2010, 21:34:05 PM
After only having Miaow Miaow in over the last few weeks, today was a nightmare.

This morning had a call from a woman in Portsmouth.  Her cat had given birth two weeks prematurely and two did not make it, but two were still alive and mum had rejected them :'(  Rushed over there but by the time I arrived another one had died.  I have never seen such premature little ones, they basically had no fur, no eyes and their skin was "sticky" to the touch.  Rushed the two of them to my vets, (took the little one in case he was still alive) but on arrival they had both passed away.  To be honest, I don't think they would have survived long, impossible to tell if their organs had even developed fully.

Got back home and got a call from the PDSA to say they had two 7-10 day old kittens handed in, could I take them.  Got over there to discover that they are not 7 days old, probably only two to three.  They were found in a carboard box in a park by someone's dog. One of them was deformed, had no tail and no anus and was already swelling in the abdomen so it was decided to let him go.  The other one, a beautiful white and tortie girl, who looks like a persian, has a cleft palate and I think she will have to be put to sleep tomorrow unless I can convince my vet to let me try tube feeding to see if it can be repaired.  Anyone had any luck with a kitten with cleft palate?

Finally started to relax about 7.30 this evening and got a call about a mum who had given birth to kittens under their decking.  They have a dog and have foxes come in the garden so were worried for the safety of the kittens.  By the time I got to this one mum had scarpered with one kitten but left the other one behind.  The gentleman had tried moving the kittens so I don't know whether mum was scared off or if she was just moving them.  The garden was a complete tip with woodpiles 6 ft high, an empty swimming pool and numerous other obstacles.  It backs on to a naval base which is apparently full of foxes and goes on for miles.  We tried searching for mum and tried waiting to see if she would return but no sign.  The family finally decided they would like me to take the remaining kitten, as it was now getting cold, and no one knew if mum would return.  They had not seen her before today and had no idea of where she had come from or gone to.

So out of six kittens, I have one day old kitten and one 2/3 day old with a cleft palate that probably won't make it, and will be another heartbreaker, and a sleepless night ahead.  I hope tomorrow is quieter. :tired:

What an awful day for you Lesley :( I hope the two you have make it (fingers crossed).

I'm guessing you saw my post about my ladies stray cat and luckily she didn't have kittens under the decking *phew*

She actually turns out to be a he, the lady was able to take him to the vets at the weekend. He is un-neutered so CP are going to give the lady vouchers and once he is all "sorted" she will try to introduce him to her other cats. So happy ending after the initial panic!! Thank you again for your help.

Yes, I saw your post Steff, glad he is getting sorted, another happy ending. :Luv2:

My latest addition is feeding well but my little cleft palate is not so good, as much coming back out through nose as seems to go in. :'(

Crikey what a day!  I don't envy you with such young kittens - I wouldnt know where to start (oh - well, Purrs of course  ;) Our rescue took in some very young kittens the other day who were in a cardboard box at the tip - mum ran off and was never found and despite best efforts all the kittens died  :(

Sorry Lesley

Also sorry but the only time I have heard of kittens being born with cleft palates is by a rescuer. She said she used to be a breeder and her vet allowed her to keep euthanasia kit at home in case any kittens were born with cleft palates. She said there was no hope so they were euthanised straight away  :'( - Maybe times have moved on since then and I guess severity also comes into it - the bottom line is quality of life, as you know

It says here that it can heal or be repaired according to severity. It also says if the hole or holes are small, they can repair themselves, but the kitten should be tube fed as suckling will stop the healing.

I think tube feeding will be the only hope for the little one - will be going to the vet tomorrow and if he thinks it is worth a try I will attempt tube feeding - but I think he will say the hole is too large.  I read some sites where they say the holes can be surgically repaired when the kitten is older but I have a feeling my vet will not concur. :'(  I have also read it is a congenital defect in certain breeds such as persians and this kitten is definitely a persian, I have never seen such a squashed up little face. :(

Regret to let you know that little white and Tortie persian (who I named Summer) was put to sleep this morning. :'( :'(  Her cleft palate was too severe and although tube feeding may have helped now complications would have occurred at weaning time and my Vet felt it unfair to her and me.  She would most probably have had to undergo major surgery at a very early age which would have carried severe risks.

On a happier note, little grey male (called Solstice) is holding his own and eating 2mls every two hours at the moment. :Luv2:

What a heartbreaking day for you.   :'(  Hope little Solstice will be ok and so sad for the others that didn't make it.   :'(  Everytime i hear of someting like this (which seem to be almost daily!) i feel so sorry for the mommy cats who just disappear and will have to go through it all again, and it's all over the country!  :( This is apart from the lucky ones like Gillian's Chico that make it into rescue.  :Luv2:) I really don't know how you rescuers cope with it every day-you all deserve knighthoods!!!      (And loads of money to help out!)

Little Solstice is holding his own, even cried for his feed this morning before I was ready.

Is peeing and pooing so insides seem to be working.

I did try him on a slightly larger syringe last night as he was drinking his 2ml and sucking for more but if I take the teat out to fill the syringe up he didn't want it back in.  Larger syringe did not work very well though and I did not want to force food into his lungs  so I have gone back to 2ml.  Cimicat says 2 - 2.5ml is enough each food for the first few days so I don't think he is going without and he normally falls asleep soon after feeding, so I am keeping everything crossed at the moment.  At least he is getting more sleep than me.  Have the timer set for every 1 1/2 hours so that I have time to prepare his milk so he is eating every two hours. :tired:

Solstice weighed 88g today so put on 8g in one day so he is obviously eating enough. :Luv2:

Today he has been joined by Mahut and Isner, two tabbies, Mahut a boy and Isner a girl (I know it's not quite right but hey ho  ) who were born by ceasarian section yesterday evening.  Apparently, mum had three stillborns and these two but she has no interest in them and has been hiding under the bed since they were taken home.  They have done nothing but SCREAM since they got here!!!! but they have eaten and pooped (not sure whether their human mum had pooped them previously so screams may be due to a bit of constipation.)

Also had a call from the RSPCA asking if I could take three kittens, 5 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks who had been removed from a house where there were 19 cats.  However, RSPCA lady was kind enough to tell me they were recovering from cat flu so I told her it would not be fair to my babies to bring a known cat flu kitten into the house.

Will post piccies of Mahut and Isner later on, need to feed everyone here at the mo, including me.

Title: Re: Did I say I was quiet!! - not today but not a good day either
Post by: LesleyW on June 26, 2010, 09:52:36 AM
Well I don't feel as if I am doing a good job. :'(  The week ended as badly as it began.  Mufat and Isner were fine when I fed them at midnight but come 2 am feed and found Mufat dead in their little bed.  No signs of anything, just passed away.  Checked Isner, fed her and she seemed okay but come 4am feed and found her bleeding from the mouth - five minutes later she was gone. :'( :'(

These kittens were supposed to have been from a c-section on Thursday evening but all this time I have wondered if I was told the truth.  The kittens were much bigger than Solstice and he is now five days old (though I know he is a very small kitten), their ears were already opening up and they looked like their eyes would open any day.  When I went to pick them up, the lady already had them ready at the front door in a box, I did not really enter the house so did not see mum at all.
Also they had already lost their umbilical cords. (I don't know how short vets cut them etc in a c-section).

I believe these kittens to be older than I was told which makes me wonder why was I told this story and what really happened?  It does not change their tragic death and I can't see it's worth chasing the woman up who passed them to me as if she didn't tell me the truth when I got them, she's not going to tell me anything now.

On a happier note, Solstice, my little miracle, still going well.

Latest arrival, Jessie, has just been collected from the RSPCA.  She is only just a year old, heavily pregnant and RSPCA are now so full they had to keep her in a basket until I got there.

Although RSPCA, they are an independent centre so are still taking in animals handed in by owners, such as Jessie.  Only this morning they took in 8 kittens, two separate litters, taped in a cardboard box.

Jessie is now settled in a pen, recovering from her ordeal today and I expect her, by her size, to give birth within the next week.

Little Solstice has reached 107g at last weigh in so growing well.  Has not opened his eyes yet and one was a bit gungy so bathed with cool boiled water and quite alot of pus came out, but this can happen just before they open them.  He is a very happy little chap and although he can't see me yet, he likes to play with my fingers when I am trying to clean him up.  He also has a terrible habit of not pooing when I stimulate him and then going two minutes later when I am not ready.

Thanks everyone, it was heartbreaking for me.  One minute Solstice was doing soo well, the next he just didn't want to eat and went downhill so quick. :'(

On a happier note today, the latest piccies of Miaow Miaow, Truman Jnr and Willow, who are all doing well, and also of Jess, who is fit to burst and must give birth soon.

I am pleased to say that Miaow Miaow and Truman Jnr are being re-homed together now and Willow is going to live in London with a former Eight Lives kitten.

By the way, the mark on the door is old glue and nothing else - looks terrible in the photo

Number two delivered safely, breathing and being cleaned to within an inch ofi t's life.  Seriously, she is being brilliant compared to Miaow Miaow, no sign of afterbirth of first kitten so she is obviously eating these and being very attentive of her kittens  - obviously both black and white  :innocent:

I've decided, to be different we actually have 5 white and blacks and one black and white.    Five of them do actually look more white than black.  The last one is defintely black with white feet though.  Have only sexed one as a boy yet, am letting her settle with them.

Miaow Miaow is unconcerned, and Truman and Willow are just into climbing everything at the moment so no interest there.

Have just had a call from someone I know though who is feeding a pregnant mum, about six weeks gone, and this is her 5th litter.  Apparently comes from a really rough family who she thinks have now been thrown out and left the cat behind. :-[  God knows what I am going to do no, nowhere to put another one that is for sure. :-[

Jess and babies all doing well.  A couple of them sexed.  Two boys, Captain Jack and Wishbone - you will see what I mean when I eventually get some piccies of them.

Have been to see other mum - definitely pregnant and such a small mum as well.  Am going back today to set up a crate in the garden for her so she has somewhere to go and we are going to continue to feed her.  I think she has at least two weeks still to go so will keep trying for somewhere but everyone down here is full.  Had one of the vets phone me today to take in a stray boy but just no room.  She said she had tried RSPCA and had a right set-to with them!!  If nowhere can be found for new mum I will have to try and squeeze her in here.  Can't have her having this litter and then getting pregnant again - there is only so much one cat can take.  At least the stray is with a vet at the moment so he is safe.

Well it seems that Miaow Miaow was the only cat who was happy with my accommodation for her kittens because Jess has now moved her brood on to the floor under my workspace and though I have tried moving them back into their bed she just takes them out again so I have given up.  Funnily enough all my other mums have moved their babies there as well.

Have posted some piccies from the day they were born and some from today.  I now think I have two girls and four boys so will look through my naming list later.

As you can see from the last picture, Miaow Miaow is feeling a little broody again and even joined in with the cleaning of one kitten which I think Jess might appreciate as she seems to have trouble keeping up with their toileting.

You will also see that their bed is not being wasted. :Luv2:

Sorry for the delay in updating.  Have been without internet for a few days and also been to the vets alot recently.  One of our dogs, Frodo, has been eating stuff again and has had to have major surgery and is at the vets as we speak.  We are hoping he is going to recover but touch and go at the moment and the Vet has confirmed he cannot undergo another op again as his insides are now so scarred.

Anyhow, black and white babies are doing well.  Lyra is definitely the runt of the litter, smaller than the others but both my mums are feeding them and I try and make sure Lyra gets extra with one of them every now and then.  Jess has had the runs over the last 24 hours and has been to the vet but she seems to be recovering.

Stray mum that we are monitoring vanished yesterday so we think she may have had kittens yesterday so hunt is on to find her, but at the moment I have nowhere to put her.  Don't want to put her in the maternity ward if Jess is still not well, so will have to wait and see and tackle things as they happen.

Latest update on stray pregnant mum is that we think the previous owner has been and picked her up.  Apparently the landlady of the house turned up and found another mum with babies in the house.  Whilst she went to report the situation to the RSPCA, the owner turned up and collected the cat and kittens.  Black and white cat has not been seen since then so we can only assume that she collected her as well. >:(

But things never stand still for long and today have had to squeeze in another mum and four black kittens!!  Had a call from a very nice chap who was at his wits end.  A member of his staff had found the mum and kittens under a fence panel in her garden.  Since she has a dog they could not stay there so took them to work with her to try and find somewhere for them to go.  The chap very kindly went to PAH and spent £126!! on a cat pen, bed, toys, bedding, food, etc etc and then started phoning around to try and find a placement for them without success.  He said the most unhelpful were the RSPCA, which will be to their detriment as he has always made regular donations to them, which will now cease.

I told him I would squeeze them in somewhere and went to collect them.  When I got there, he gave me all the stuff he had bought for them, plus a donation of £264..  Whilst loading the car, I apologised for the stuff in the back which I had just collected from somewhere for car booting.  He then said if I could get to his house he had a shed full of stuff I could take for car boot that he had been saving for the last 2/3 years - all good stuff.  Also found out that he owns the Company, which sets up websites and he told me they would be happy to build me a website for free if I needed it.

So mum and kittens are now ensconced in their nice new pen at home and although mum is a bit upset at the moment I am sure she will calm down overnight.  The strange thing is that the kittens are  not feral so I think they have been dumped since being born rather than being born outside.  They are not hissy and do not mind being picked up etc.  Three girls and one boy so my ratio of boys to girls is evened out a bit.

Forgot to add that Frodo is doing fine, op seems to have been success and ihe is now being spoilt at home, although he cannot have any bedding in case he decides to eat it. :scared:

What a lovely caring man, I`ll bet its a rarity to receive a donation when you take in, I know it is here. Good Luck with mum and babies, funnily enough I have nearly all girls.

I think that is only the second time someone has given a donation when I have collected, and definitely not as large as that.  £184 was in change, his tuck shop takings,  :Luv2: but he had bagged it all up for me.

SSSShhhh, don't tell everyone how many are here  :-[ ;D .

Seriously, everyone is doing well.  Jess' babies are now three weeks old and are already sampling solid food.  They have only just started wandering around. :Luv2: .  Sexes have now changed, and I have three girls and three girls (I think).  Captain Jack and Lyra will have to be re-named as they have changed genders.  I will try and post piccies and names later.  Jess is improving and no longer has the runs.

New mum has been called Little Girl (from my Auction list of names, thank you Sabrina).  Her kittens are impossible to tell apart but are all quite friendly and active.  Three girls and one boy, names to follow later.

Bailey, one of last year's kittens, was reserved yesterday and will be going to his new home at the end of the week and someone is coming tomorrow - both her and her mum are after a kitten, so they all better be on their best behavour tomorrow.

Will be getting the homing page up-to-date on my website this week so hopefully some more homings will come of this.

Good luck with the rehoming, hope its a good result and they have 2 each.lol

How is little Fini, still so disapointed I couldn't have her. Hope she finds a great home soon.

How are Miaow Miaow & Truman? Hope they find a lovely home together.

Well, I'm pleased to report that Truman Jnr and Fini (sorry Nickynoo) have been reserved and will be going to their new homes in a couple of weeks.   :wooooo: Have also found a home for my gorgeous Bailey, who I will miss dreadfully  :Sad Bye:  - he has been here over a year - but he is going to a wonderful newly-wed couple.

Everyone else is doing well, Little Girl and babies all settled in and eating well, Jesse and babies all comfortable.

Good news. Been expecting her to go soon, she's such a sweetheart. Is Truman going on his own, without his lovely Mummy?

Pete will be relieved, thinks he's going to come home to find her here.lol

Truman is going on his own, but he is going to be living with two lady pussies, so I think he will be in his element, he does rather like the ladies. :Luv2:

Fini will be causing havoc with two cats as well, I don't think they will know what has hit them. :naughty:

So Miaow Miaow is still looking for a home, I think she will suit someone who is home most of the day, she just loves fusses and would happily spend the entire day being pampered sitting on a lap.

Sorry for the delay in  up-dating.  Mum was rushed into hospital again yesterday and Mik'e mum and dad not well either so been a bit chaotic here.

Some sad news unfortunately.  One of Jess' kitten passed away at the weekend, the one that I thought was a girl but that was actually a little boy.  He was the runt of the litter and was always small but lost his little battle.  :'( :'(

I have a feeling that mum has basically dried up and although the kittens are eating solids they still need a milk top up so I am moving them into the kitchen into a separate pen so I can be sure that they are getting all the food (and mum is not eating it all) and I can spend time supplementing them with a milk top up.  The five remaining kittens have been checked and are okay and not knowing the history of daddy etc it is difficult to know what may have been wrong with the little one.

Little Girl and her kittens are doing well, although a couple of them are still a little skittish.  Moving Jess' lot downstairs means I will be able to remove one large pen from that room and give these kittens some more room.  Must give them some names soon as well, although apart from one of them being a girl they are all identical black beauties so will never know who is who.

Truman Jnr and Willow are both fine.  Willow will not be going to her new home until September as her mum is going on holiday but Truman Jnr and little Fini are both off to new homes on Saturday. :Luv2:

Bailey went to his new home on Friday and made himself at home immediately.  When I phoned the following day to see if he had settled in, was advised he spent the first night snuggled on the bed with new owners and has not stopped purring since he got there.

I promise to get photos of everyone soon but I am doing a large "invitation only" car boot on Saturday and trying to get everything ready for that.  It is quite a prosperous area and is part of a Community Fun Day with all sort of attractions, so am hoping to bring some much needed funds in.  Anybody who has any small car boot items that they want to send me feel free :naughty:

I must admit I'm not too bad off for things so far and still have to go and pick up the van full from the guy who found Little Girl and kittens. The thing I am really after is small cat toys etc that can go for 25p etc, people seem to expect cat and kitten toys on a kitten rescue stall, even though I need them myself for the kittens.

I can't tell the black ones apart so I don't know what I will do when someone reserves one.  Mind you, I don't think they will know which one they have reserved of the boys, as there are three of them. :innocent:

The pen I put Jess' kittens in last night is not big enough so now having another change around to give them a bigger space.  I don't know why I don't just take all the furniture out of the house, then I'll be able to fit everyone in, - oh, I remember, - hubby won't let me

Well just when I thought I had squeezed everyone into their  new places, have just been to pick up another four two week old kittens who have been rejected by their mum (or that's the story I have been given  :shify: ) so now the intensive care unit has to come out.  SO Jess kittens will now move to the large kitten pen (wasn't going to go to the trouble of getting it out and setting it up but I have enough kittens now for it to be in use for the next couple of months) new ones in kitchen and the others in the study.

Sleepless nights again now then :tired:

Well at least you have some more safe now and more time to spend not doing all the other things!

I for one am so glad we have the space for all of ours - only one kitten pen in use for Baby Charlie at night - sadly I have about 8 adults trying to get in to his food - he purrs a storm up for them then consumes his own dinner ;D

On the furniture front you can always have a clearout - OH mentioned I wasn't to buy anymore cat furniture - 2 arrived yesterday so will be having a catpost move fest and dump this weekend :sneaky:

Apologies for the lack of updates, it's been so busy here and just finding a space to set up the laptop is an achievement with cats everywhere.

Everyone doing well here.  Newest kittens are growing extremely well and are a beautiful bundle of fun and friendliness.  Think they will be semi longhaired beauties, two boys and two girls, two named so far Mittens and Sox, others to be named still.

Jess and all her babies are doing well.  Went through a scrawny stage when they didn't seem to be growing and, although they are definitely small for their age (six weeks  think!) they are lively and playing and managing to clean themselves up a bit more now.  Had a couple of scares with the smallest who had a couple of collapsing fits but I think it was due to low blood sugar.  Both times I administered glucose solution and after an hour she was back to normal.  Hasn't happened now for about a week so hopefully she s now eating enough for herself.  Jess has virtually dried up though they still try to suckle so it maybe time to separate them soon.

Little girl and babies are also well.  Was worried that Little Girl may be pregnant again but looking less so now so hopefully it was just the fact that she was getting regular meals and putting weight on.

Have another little one to pick up this afternoon, 4 month old female who new owner's son is allergic to (how often do we hear this story).

Good news is that I am going back to work at the Vets I left five years ago. ;D   It's only for 11 1/2 hours a week but will pay for the cat food each week which will help ease my very over-stretched funds.  The discount I get there will also help ;) .  I'm dead chuffed, I've been trying to get back there for a while on a casual basis but this is a permanent position.  Going today to finalise the details and pick up my uniform.

Car boot raised over £100 which was extremely helpful and am doing another one this weekend.  Also have to pick up some gorgeous conservatory furniture this weekend from my lovely new benefactor so will probably put that on e-bay.  He paid over £1,000 for it and then two months later moved to his gorgeous thatched cottage and had nowhere to put it so it is virtually brand new.  He also gave me a lovely big carpet cleaner which has already been put to use and a fully functional generator which I can use at the car boots in the winter if I need to.

Right, off to feed the hairy bunch - hope to start them on solids soon.

Sorry for the delay in updates - been pretty manic here what with work etc and pretty tragic over the last week.  The last litter of kittens picked up have all passed away one by one with no real explanation.  Another of Jess's babies has had several collapsing episodes again but has been revived each time.  She seems to be holding her own at the moment but every time I think she is over it, it happens again.

Car boot went well - sold the conservatory furniture my generous benefactor gave me and raised £260 in all, doing another one tomorrow but only small things.

Work is going well, although yesterday was a bad day with two cats being brought in from being hit by cars, both dead on arrival - one brought in by his owner, only a six month old burmese.  The other was brought in by a passer by who saw him get hit, a beautiful black boy but no chip or collar so remains unclaimed at the moment.

Life is hectic at the moment and Mike is away all the time so pretty lonely as well even with all the furbabes here and cleaning seems never ending and the mountain of food I get through is unbelievable but I shall keep plodding on, trying to do my best.

Jess' baby (now named Widget) doing well today although her sister had a funny turn this morning but is recovering now.  Another one that really doesn't want to eat solids but won't take milk from me either!.    Have been given her glucose solution during the day and she is much better now and I'm finger feeding her some meat which seems to have the desired effect.

Widget looks a right mess, has lost most of her fur on her face and chest from getting so mucky so has huge looking "bug" eyes Mike says but she is certainly a fighter.  Hope she passes that on to her sister.

Well, Mike forgave me for the three newbies and one of them has already been reserved so that was a bonus.  He has forgiven me so much that he said yes when the RSPCA asked me to take in a 17 week old male tabby.  His owner turned up at their door with him as her autiistic had almost drowned him in the bath!!  They had cat flu at the centre and also have 18 coming in over the next week from an RSPCA case so little Nero, as he has been named, has joined us.

He turned up with his owners and when they got him out of the car he was not even in a basket, just on a harness and stinking of cigarette smoke.  He is now living in the kitchen with Shelby, and the newbies Wolfie (he looks like a mini Werewolf and his new owners like the name so much they are keeping it,) Chanel and Mungo.

Nearly turned into puppy rescue this afternoon.   Had a little of Boxer pups at work - mum died on the operating table whilst have a c-section - and me and one of the Nurses were going to bring two each home to handrear but Vet decided owner should take responsibility for them.  (I'm afraid I don't hold out much hope of them surviving - 12 delivered, only four left).

So, despite going through the trauma of losing Thomas today, things never get slower here.

Another two of the pups died over the last night so only two white ones left but I don't hold out much hope.

Have a new kitty in called Squeaky who was rescued from a home where the kids were spinning her round by her tail and head but the person who rescued her was unable to keep her as she was eight months pregnant.  Yet another one given my number by the RSPCA.

Had a call from a woman today looking for homes for three five month old kittens (from her own cat).  Unfortunately, I explained to her that I am now full and was unable to help but suggested she put posters up in local vets etc.  Also told her to contact Cats Protection for neutering vouchers as if not careful her three will expand rapidly.  Unfortunately, I don't think she took too much notice but advised her to at least try and find a home for the one female (though probably the mum is still not neutered, so that won't make much difference).

Have also had a call from a chap looking for good homes for four kittens.  Am about to phone him back to explain the situation ie, I am looking for good homes for about 50 cats.

Nero is still in the hospital and still not eating.  Has been tested for FeLV/FIV and negative on both thankfully.  Our Biochemistry machine is bust so can't get blood results on him today but hopefully it will be up and running tomorrow so we can find out if there is anything showing on there, otherwise it is a mystery.  His temperature had risen a little to 103 so he's had synulox injection but he is certainly not his happy little self. :(

 :thanks:  for asking after him.

Nero is no better, still not eating.  Bloods from hospital came back clear so are now sending samples to outside lab including faeces sample he did last night of green diarrhoea

They are trying to syringe feed him A/D and have now put him on a drip.

He is in the best place for him but the worst for me, more expense I cannot afford and working there doesn't make it any easier really, I already owe them about £1,700 so basically I am working for free for the next six months. :'(

Some blood results back from outside lab and pleased to say that Nero is coronavirus negative. :wooooo:

He has started eating on his own but still has green very runny diarrhoea.  Just waiting for toxoplasma results now.

He is on a drip but does seem brighter in himself.  Trouble is everyone thinks he is so poorly because when he gets comfortable he curls up in the tightest ball he can and looks pathetic, hiding his face under his paws or right into his tummy.

So he is still in hospital at the moment, increasing my bill day by day but he is improving I think and that is worth every penny.

Is it ok to pop a post to ask?

Think a newspaper article about Eight lives, the cats in care already and the ones rehomed etc

if you can find someone is willing to help with some publicity then go for it. We can't all be everything. Besides which, there are some people who love cats, can't help with the hands on side and would relish the opportunity of helping out in another way.
It doesn't even have to be local!
Title: Re: Eight Lives Left Kitten Rescue Update
Post by: Pinkbear (Julie) on October 08, 2010, 13:46:44 PM
When I first started I fostered a pair of kittens for a while. I always refused to take anything from the rescue as I felt guilty... but then you realise for a lot of folks who wish to show support and really wished they were at your side, putting a tin of food in the donations bucket is all they can manage to do to help you.  :briggin: So Lesley there may well be people out there who really, really want to stand by you and would be doing the same but their lifestyles and skills are limited. How else can they contribute to the problem globally? It's a partnership and you are both enabling each other to do something positive and active.  :shy: Maybe if you focus on that it will be easier to ask for and accept help? There must be loads of people looking for just the right opportunity to contribute to rescue work.

Our group has this lovely girl and her mother and they go round the vet food bins once a week collecting the donations and dropping them off at the storage. It probably only takes 30 minutes out of their week, but it's one less job the rest of us have to worry about.  :) And they get the glowing feeling of knowing they are doing their bit too!  ;)

I understand how you feel, Lesley but, from what i've read on here and in volunteering for my local CP, this year has been horrendous for rescues, with more cats and kittens than ever.   If i were in your position, i wouldn't hesitate to ask for any help that could be given, be it money or anything else that's needed!  You must all be completely  :tired: and i am i awe of what you all do!

I understand where you're coming from, but everybody needs help sometimes. You didn't ask for all these people not to neuter their cats then abandon them and their babies.
You are just a lovely lady doing all you can to save these little ones.
We are eternally grateful and thankfull to you for rescuing our babies and letting us rehome them from you.  Getting a lovely purry cuddle of my little black beauty as I type.

Please ask if you need help of any kind, I will do all can to help you, indoors or out.

Hi all

I'm usually more of a 'lurker' on here as usually frequent CC but just wanted to respond to Tan's comment if anybody works in marketing

I'm a marketing manager, and though my role is usually direct marketing to existing customers I would be happy to help in any way I could

Am in the middle of working on an assignment for another qualification but I will hopefully have that finished by the end of next week and the next assignment doesn't start til the middle of November

Please let me know if I can help at all

Sorry for the lack of postings, bit busy down here.

Have had another couple of furries in, two lovely males, one of which is a polydactyl with 6 toes on each foot.   Have re-named him Hemmingway and his brother Wordsworth.  Hemmingway is quite a quiet cat but a beautiful longhaired tabby and his brother is, of course, black and white.

Nero is back to his mischievious self, beating up Bubble and Squeak two of my black kittens.

My ginger kitten Mungo Jerry has been reserved with one of the black and white kittens Gadget.  I want them to be a little bigger before they go, as although they are 10 weeks old they are only just over 600g and they look too small to go.

Also had one of my rehomed cats returned this week.  Tibby was re-homed probably 3/4 years ago but the family are emigrating and were not prepared the £1,100 to have the cat go with them (their words, that is twice the amount of one of the kids), so Tibby is back here and a bit traumatised really.  Hopefully he won't be here too long as he is a beautiful longhaired black and white babe.

Thank you for all your kind words.  Mike is now out of hospital and staying with friends in London.  I do not want him to travel just yet and he does not want me to go up there and leave all the cats so I should hopefully see him on Friday.  A couple of the ECGs were slightly irregular but all other tests came back okay so we are treating it as a warning.  Whether he will heed it or not is another matter.

Mike is back to work today, spent yesterday sorting out details for his dad's funeral.  He is still quite stressed which I think is what is causing his chest pains etc but with his dad just gone, his mum not at all well (kidney cancer) and the family divided by feuds (not caused by us I may add but directed at me!!) it is not an easy time.

We are still carrying on though.  Majestic my handrear is coming along well and we took in a giant tabby boy yesterday who had been left behind by previous tentants of a letting agency that Mike does work for.  Still entire, so he is at the vets today having those removed!!!.  Poor boy wonders what is happening but he is a giant 6kg (though he feels soo much heavier) and quite a gentle lad so he will be recuperating downstairs in a nicely set up pen.

Everyone else fine although we are in the process of re-arranging living accommodation for everyone - basically trying to re-claim our living room for Christmas and moving the cats to their own two specially arranged rooms upstairs, so house is a mess, we're in a mess but we'll keep going.

Love to all.

so sorry you are having such a hard time. my condolences to you both.
Easier said than done, but don't take on anything more (even if you have room!) for a while to allow yourselves some respite and I hope your homing picks up to lessen the burden.

Sorry to hear about Mike's Dad and all the problems you are having at the moment. Just sending lots of  and hoping that things improve.

You big tabby boy sounds just like my bridge babe Dylan, he was a big boy but so gentle. Hope he gets on ok at the vets

Sorry I haven't posted for a while.  Still snowed under here but personally still not going good.  Mike's mum passed away just before Christmas so that's both his parents within two months.  Funeral is on Monday and things are not that good between the family so neithetr of us are looking forward to it.

Kitties all doing well.  Took a stray in from a rented property a few months ago, Cob - and he seemed to be settling in well with the downstairs cats and after a good month period I decided to let him out.  Stupid move.  He vanished and didn't come home and I was searching for him for two weeks with no sightings.  Turned out he managed to get all the way across town back to the rented property!!!

So he is back home here now and living with the upstairs cats.  He is a real gentle giant and such a softie and so lucky not to have had some terrible accident getting back to his home - he had two cross to very busy main roads and travel about five miles.  The lady who rents the flat now says he was left behind by the previous tenant and she had been feeding him for about six months but does not want him in the house, hence him having to come here, but how anyone could not love him. :(   Still he is safe and sound here again now and won't be going on any more travels in the foreseeable future.  Luckily for him he is a big giant tabby and Mike can never say no to tabby cats.

So sad about Mikes parents and sending my condolences

I hope the funeral will go off without a problem.

Cob sounds stunning and amazing how they can be so determined to get back to their old house, he obviously must have loved his original owner and his home, despite her not caring the same about him.

I just dont understand how people can just leave cats behind or have cats for years and then just rehome them.

So pleased he now doesnt have to look for a home any more  ;D

It is with great regret, sadness and amazing heartache that I am writing to say that Eight Lives Left is having to close it's doors.  I just cannot carry on anymore.  The cats that are still here (and there are still over 50) will remain in my care until they can find homes but I cannot take in any more.

The financial pressure has finally taken it's toll and I just can't carry on.  The rescue has always been mainly financed by me and despite going back to work to help pay for it, it is still costing more than I can earn to keep the cats already here let alone take any more in.

I can'r write more at the moment, sorry.

I assume Admin will remove me from the rescue list.

Lesley my heart goes out to you, so many times I have been exactly where you are now and I honestly dont think people stop to think where the money comes from. You have to go through the daily agonies and heartache of rescue to truly understand just how bad things are both physically and emotionally without the added financial burden and increasing personal debt which we all end up with.
On a point of admin removing you from rescue list, its my own opinion that you need help and support more than ever at this time, you rescued those cats and they are still going to need care until they are rehomed, Being a rescue myself I know just how much those costs escalate and just how tough and worrying everything is
I truly hope admin can see what I am getting at and try and help in some way.
The internet can be a wonderful tool to help with rehoming/fundraising but I am going to say something now that needs to be said
The internet is destroying many small rescues, for example putting up petitions for red nose type days for rescue animals BUT BUT BUT the small unheard of hardworking rescues like us wont benefit, the funds would go away from our areas and away from little ones like us who are too busy working our butts off with the real hard rescue work, the people who would get any funds are the ones who are clever on computers, the ones who have time to post ads everywhere and who dont do the dirty or hands on work, in other words the ones making a name from passing cats on to others.
Lesley take care, you deserve better and hopefully something will turn up

So sorry to hear that you are in this position Lesley, you have done so much for the cats and kittens in your care.  Good luck with rehoming the cats that you have in your care at the moment.

Please take care of yourself, and don't be beaten into submission by people trying to force you into taking any more cats into your home.

I wish we were able to take on a couple more but at the moment its all up in the air with trying to move.

Thankyou for My babies as without you and people like yourself I wouldn't have been able to rescue.

Take care, I will be down in the next couple of weeks with some stuff for you.

Really sad to hear this news but can totally understand. All of the Purrs rescuers have had such a hard time, I really don't know how you all do it.

Its sad the rescue will be losing a wonderful and experienced person like yourself but I guess there comes a point where you have to draw a line for your own sake...otherwise you would need rescuing yourself *hug*

I hope you find wonderful homes for the current furries and can eventually start to relax and reccouperate. You have had a lot going on over the past months.

Lesley I'm sure all the cats you've helped in the past and the 50 you have living under your roof don't think you are a failure - you are one person against a tide of ignorant people who think animals are disposable, you can't help everyone, it doesn't reflect badly on you but on the rest of us

Lesley

You are not a failure, non of us are. It is society that is the failure allowing these poor animals to suffer so dreadfully in the first place. Then society is all too happy to pass the problem on with no thought of how we make ends meet.
Just thinking, How many times has someone told you that you are an angel and you`ve thought I`d much rather have a pouch of cat food  we live in a very thoughtless world.
You have worked hard and saved many lives and should feel proud of your achievements, sadly I do know how you are feeling now.

Lesley you are far from being a failure you have helped so many cats and kittens over the years that have bought laughter and tears to all of us here at purrs

Sometimes making the decision is the first step to recovery, I hope you can get your numbers down and take a step back from things for a while, you and OH have been through so much in the last short while and it all takes its toll

You should keep your rescue status as you still have rescue babies to home so therefore are still a rescue just one in slim down the numbers mode

I've heard from Lesley (briefly). I am sure she's still alive and kicking.  ;)

But she's in bits, chaps, so lets please give her space. A private PM shows support... public pleas to reconcider or other outpourings add to feelings of pressure. I know no one put me in charge of anything.... but please remember she's a goodie and she's reading this too!

Anyone who feels the need can PM me any rantings/vitriol/poems/offers of marriage to get matters off their chest... I don't mind. I shall ignore or reply as I see fit!

I'm going to be led by Lesley and what she wants and I'll listen when she's ready to talk.  ;)

Lesley, got to the later thread first re help and only saw this one later so have PM'd you as Pinkbear has suggested.  Just wanted to add my support as an independent rescue and reiterate what Theresa especially has said.  The only thing I would add is that as small, independent rescues, we always operate to our limits and then when other things go wrong, especially in our personal lives, it may just tip the balance and it is hard sometimes to see our way forward.  We are all here for you, whatever you decide to do, and whatever you decide to do, please know that you have made a difference to so many cats and kittens. xx

Lesley you have done more than you will ever know for the cats you have taken in,   it breaks my heart to see rescue's struggling at the moment,  the cost of looking after the cats is astonising, I really had no idea until I went to the cash and carry with T to get two weeks cat food and litter and it was £300 that is without all the vet bills etc that have to paid.  You are NOT a failure Lesley,  you can not let this break you,  things will get better,  as you say you have 50 cats still in care so there is no way you should be taken off the rescue list,  you need the support more than ever.   I cant even begin to know what you are going through at the moment,  but I know it must be breaking your heart,  anything any of us can do just ask,  don't let pride get in the way,  just ask,  you have a forum here full of people that will help you and support you,  we are all here for you Lesley and we are all thinking of you

Just to update that everyone is fine here.  Dry food has arrived and being really appreciated by all the little ones.  Delay on the wet food but it will be well used when it arrives.

One of my friends at work used to work at the local RSPCA shelter and they have kindly agreed that she can go in weekly and get a supply of cat food for me from their collections (apparently they used to give alot of it to the local Cats Protection) so that is helpful as well, and spoke to them at the RSPCA and anyone looking for cats in my area who go to them will be given my number so that might help move things along a bit as well, although so far all I have had is calls for kittens which I do not have, but it is all a step in the right direction.

That's decent of the RSPCA  :)

How about a rehoming article in the local paper? My local paper has a 'cats corner' that features four rescue cats - a photo and a brief bit of background. The following week there are another four cats and it tells you whether the previous weeks' cats found homes, which 9 times out of ten they did.

Will keep me occupied unpacking it whilst two of my youngsters are being castrated today.  Poor little Wordsworth looked lost in the cat ward and just wanted to cuddle into my arms all the time and didn't want me to go.  Nero just wanted everyone to know he was there by miaowing as loud as he could and scratching the glass.

Thanks everyone, we are fine here.  Had to turn down two cats this week :-[ , one pregnant mum that RSPCA can't get in at the moment and one from a vets that was found as a stray with injuries, - just don't have the room to keep them :( .

Did first car boot of the year on Sunday, dreadful weather but need to get back to doing them, made about £60 so quite good.  Having a sort through in the house now to see if there is anything else I can car boot.

Had someone asking for some yard cats for their stables today so looks like a couple of my scaredy cats (ferals) will have a nice home to go to shortly.

Still trundling on  :tired:

Sorry not updated for ages, never seems time for anything.

Despite saying I was closing the doors, have just taken in a lovely black cat that I think may have been involved in RTA as she seems very tender in the pelvis region and I am not sure if her tail is still in tact as it seems to hang down rather pathetically.  She growls if you touch the very top of her tail but does not seem to have any feeling in the end.  The one good thing is she is peeing and pooing okay, bad thing is she looks a little round!!  Not goo to be pregnant if she has pelvic injuries so drastic measures may be necessary.

She will be off to work (the vets) tomorrow and will update when I know what is happening.

Everyone else still doing well, - Doodle and Kali gone to the stables near work and are settling in happily but everyone else still here - everyone who phones wants nine week old kittens

So, although I am not going to take in the volume of cats previously, the doors are not closed and will always be ajar.  If people find the doors shut they just leave the cats on the doorstep anyway so I've given up trying to close. :tired:

I like the analogy about the door being ajar  Hope the latest rescue will make a good recovery

Did you have a think about asking your paper to do a 'cats corner' type thing? Every week there are 4 adult cats and 99% of the time they report that the previous weeks featured cats all found homes. I could scan the section in my local paper to give you an idea if you like?

Thanks Helen.  I know I am being cynical but I have found that whenever I try publicity o help, all I get is more cries for help from people trying to get "rid" of their cats rather than wanting to adopt them.

Probably not a good trait to have when you are in cat rescue but I am quite a shy person and find it hard to push myself and, therefore, the cat rescue forward.  I do quite well at the cat boots and do get the name out there when I am there.

Little Lizzie, as I decided to call our newest addition, was put to sleep this morning :'( .  Her condition worsened overnight and although we originally thought it may have been an rta, she developed neurological signs this morning with a constant head shaking and unco-ordination of her legs.  Robin, my vet, said we could spend loads on tests and never get a diagnosis and I felt she would be very stressed and uncomfortable during the time this might take, which I felt was not fair on her with the result that she may have to be put to sleep at the end of it anyway.  She was clearly unhappy and distressed already. :'(

RIP little one, sorry i couldn't do more for you. :candle:

same here, more cats needing to come in and very few homes offered -  mostly not very good homes - people think that you want to get rid so desp. that you don't care where they go and they certainly don't want to donate anything!

Obviously you guys in rescue are at the sharp end and know best but this is an example of the articles, they're about 6 inches square.

Last weeks followed by this weeks and as you can see it says in this weeks one that they all found homes - one of the cats was brain damaged and another with a sensitive tummy (I'm reading that as a runny bum!) so not all picture perfect chocolate box kittens which would find a home anyway.

Pics...

Pleased to report that Cleo, a little Tortie who was re-homed once but came back following a divorce has gone to a wonderful new home today. :Luv2: :Luv2:

Little Squirrel and Hemmingway are being neutered on Thursday next week and Squirrel's umbilical hernia will be repaired at the same time, so some movement going on here.

Also, would like to take this opportunity to thank Ron at Lost Cats Brighton, - he knows what for.  :thanks:

Latest update for you.  Unfortunately Cleo has returned :'( .  Apparently, although the owner fell in love with her, Cleo seemed very stressed and began defecating in the bathroom, bedroom and kitchen sink.  It appears all she wanted was to come back home because as soon as she was back she was in the litter tray and happy to be back with all her friends, so it looks like she has decided where she wants to live.  I won't try re-homing her again, as this was her second home (returned from the first one following a divorce) so I will not put her through that again.

On a happier note, Emily, who has been waiting for a home for about three years, finally left on Saturday after a successful home check.  I just hope she settles better.

Persia has been to the vet today and diagnosed with feline plasma pododermatitis (inflammation of her pads) and has been given medication.  Squirrel was neutered last week and has now been described as a "deformed" cat by my vet - I got to work whilst she was still in theatre (not many people get to see the inside of their own cat) and it took him ages to find everything inside because it was all so small!  She is recovering well and had her hernia repaired at the same time.

Someone coming tomorrow who is after two new puddies so hopefully someone will take his fancy and will fancy living with him.

Finally, thanks to Angie at Coventry Cats - my food was despatched today Angie, so very contented, fat cats soon.

Glad to report that Storm and Hemmingway were chosen for their new home and following a homecheck at the weekend should be off on Tuesday.  They will be sadly missed here, two special cats - Storm was raised from a kitten of about five days and Hemmingway has his lovely big feet but a new home will be good for them I hope.

Have a stray at work looking for a home and although lots of people have said they will take him, he is still in after a week.  Finally succumbed and visited him yesterday and he is the most loveable, large (6.8kkg) tabby lap cat I have ever met.  All he wants you to do is sit down so he can sit on you and then he doesn't want to move.

Luckily Mike's favourites are tabbies so if he is still ther tomorrow when Mike meets me at work after coming home from London I will have to inrdocue him - have already made tentative suggestions.

Shame, but hopefully he has a nice new home to get spoilt in.

I still intend adding to the furry family once we are settled, expect Pete will try and wriggle out of it.lol But he did promise, and even said I could have 2 if I wanted, anything to shut me up at the time I think.

I'd just like to say thank you everyone for your support, both financial and emotional, but unfortunately, as happens many times as we know here the RSPCA have got their way and Trooper will be going to them tomorrow.

I am afraid this is the last straw for me and I am giving this rescue lark up completely.

Trooper's website has been deleted, Eight Lives website has been deleted and I am giving up on all of this.

I am not going through this again.

I REGRET THAT I HAVE NOW CALLED IT A DAY AND EIGHT LIVES IS NO LONGER IN EXISTENCE.  ANY CATS HERE WILL BE LOOKED AFTER BY ME AND IF, BY CHANCE, SOMEONE ROUND HERE IS AFTER A CAT I WILL RE-HOME WITHOUT ANY COSTS, BUT ONLY IF I THINK IT IS RIGHT.

It seems in the world of rescue you are never supposed to "give up".

Despite deleting my website and removing my phone number from as many places as I can, they still track you down.

Eight Lives Left Kitten Rescue has been reinstated by the PDSA in Portsmouth who have asked me to take on a 6 week tortie female.  She was handed in as a stray, bleeding from the nose and thought to be hit by a car.  Following xrays, she seems to be physically okay but a little grumpy so not sure if she is a feral.

They have tried everywhere but nowhere will take her so I have been "forced" out of retirement!!

I feel bad still about Trooper and extremely p***ed off with the RS***, who I will have no  more to do with, but it seems the cats still need me. :Luv2: :Luv2:

I'm sorry to mess everyone around on here - I truly did mean it when I said I couldn't carry on, but it's amazing what a couple of weeks of no phone calls and a bit of time to yourself can do to revitalise the mind and body.

Will post piccies of tortie girl who has brought this resurrection about when I pick her up tomorrow (am having a very rare trip to the piccies tonight to see the new Senna film).

Have arrived back with little Tortie who I have named Phoenix.

Don't think she is really a feral, just a scared little girl who doesn't know what is going on and just wants her mummy.  Only looks about five weeks old to me.

Capone was given up on by the dreaded R word too....Nicky took over his care after he was brought into the vets she works at and they said they weren't prepared to pay what it would cost to make him well again. He lives a happy life with tigerbaby, her partner, his Bengal and their two dogs now....

Looking forward to torti pics. And glad you're back!

Sorry no piccies of Phoenix yet but there has been a development - just been to vet and  he agrees with me in that he thinks Phoenix is a tortie .............BOY!!, only the second one he has seen in 25 years (another "freak" I've got he said  ).

I had my suspicions but wanted him to confirm.  Just typical after I bought him a pink scratching post and pink blankets, well of course I assumed when i picked him up that he was a she.

He has become a little cuddle bum - I do promise piccies soon. :innocent:

After my moment of madness a couple of weeks ago when I deleted my website, I have now set up a new one, well started anyway.

Probably the most important page is the one I have yet to finish, the cats for re-homing, but perhaps you could let me know what you think of it - is it easy to navigate? does it look okay? do I need to add anything?  SPELLING MISTAKES?

Any comments gratefully received.

Helps if I let you know what it's called doesn't it

Very nice  :)

The only thing I spotted was that the second sentence on the home page doesn't really make sense to me

Unfortunately, all but one of the litter survived the first 48 hours but when the farmer's wife left to go on a planned holiday to Canada,  I offered to handrear the remaining kitten.

I read that as that they all survived bar one, from the next part you can see that it was actually they all died apart from the one remaining kitten which was your first handrear?

Don't worry folks, all cats are okay but Nicky brought round a lovely giant scratching post, which she called chewbacca, that Charlie and Poppy had basically ignored for a year.

Been really busy here with work, was in every day last week so spent the weekend tidying up after my messy crew.

Water melon has given birth to three black beauties.  Was a bit shocked by the whole experience.  Had them in her litter tray so she and babies were covered and she didn't seem to know what they were or where they had come from :-: .  I had to clean them all up, cut them from the afterbirths, cos mum didn't do anything -  think she thought she was going for a poo and these three "things" came out instead :evillaugh: .  But after the initial shock she has been a very good mum, all babies have done is eat and sleep for a week.  Two of them now have their eyes open and are spitting at me.   Mum has calmed down and although she hisses at me initially she now enjoys a fuss and starts purring.  Will try and get some photos of them but I think it will probably be a blur of black.   Think they are three boys.

Nero and Wordsworth are fine.  Wordsworth likes to escape into the front room and hide in the tunnel so I can't get him out.

Hectic week for you then, I worked all week, had shed loads of washing to do, luckily Pete is fairly well housetrained now and does things without me asking him, taken 4 years to get him that far.lol

Had some lovely cuddles with Poppy this morning, highlight of my days off, spending fuss time with the cats.

Hoping to go and give bood today, but not sure if I can, because I take thyroxine. Will find out later.

Glad all cats are ok, cheeky Wordsworth, Charlie used to get under the coffee table so we couldn't get him.

What a shock for the little girl, thinking she needed the loo and having 3 babes instead!!!  :)

Post by: LesleyW on October 04, 2011, 08:37:50 AM
Sorry it has been so long since I gave an up-date here.  Been very busy at work covering holidays etc and busy here with cats.

Water Melon's babies are now seven weeks old and are gorgeous babies, the cleanest kittens I think I have ever had.  Senna is a brown bundle of fluff and completely different to his two shorthaired black brothers Hamilton and Herbert.  One of them is already reserved.  Water Melon herself is beginning to enjoy fuss and as soon as she is dry I will be getting her neutered.

Has been a busy time on the cat front but most of them are sad stories.

Had a call from one of the new girls at work in desperation.  Her and a friend had bought a siamese male for Breeding (don't go there!!!) but decided he was too nice and had re-homed him.  The person they re-homed him to had also moved him on and, to cut a long story short, he had been hit by a car.  His microchip was registered to the first owner and they were contacted to say he was injured.  After getting in contact with the next two owners, no one would take responsibility for payment of any care for him and I agreed to take him on.  He was brought to the Hospital where I work and xrays taken.  Unfortunately, his hips were completely smashed to bits and, although surgery through referral was an option, it was felt that he would be in constant pain with arthritis.  Being only 3 years old, I felt it was not fair for him to live the rest of his life in pain and he was put to sleep in my arms.  RIP Ripley, sorry I couldn't help any more.  :'(

The following day a stray cat was brought in found in somebody's garden - a definite siamese cross with beautiful blue eyes and long nose - he looked a very old boy who was starving.  Again, I agreed that if no owner came forward I would pay for his care.  Unfortunately, it turned out he was a  young cat suffering from FELV.  another one gone to the bridge too soon. :(

The latest one was an old boy, 18 years old in fact.  She was taken to a local vets who phoned me saying they had tried everywhere for a space for her and no one would take her and they would have to put her to sleep so off I go to pick her up.

Took her straight to my vet who confirmed my suspicion that she was in fact a neutered "he" (remind me not to use that vet if they can't sex a cat!!!).  Did FELV/FIV test and all clear
so came home to isolation and back to work the following Monday for blood tests etc.  Fortunately, owner phoned me on Monday to say he was hers and "Jester" was returned home that day.  As I said, he was 18 and a bit doddery but at least he has made it home. :Luv2:

Finally, I am sure someone will report shortly but one of my babies left yesterday for his new home.  Quite a few tears from me but he has gone to a wonderful home and will be spoilt rotten. ;)

Thanks, mum and kittens are well, lady whose garden they were in took them to her vet yesterday to check mum for a chip (none found obviously) and all were given a clean bill of health.  Mum is very friendly but stressed at being confined.  Did not eat last night but hopefully that will change this morning.  she is very friendly and loves a fuss which always makes things easier, definitely better than Water Melon.

Babies are approximately 3-4 weeks old, didn't really have time to look at them probably last night but definitely one tortie (I'm not saying girl until I have looked - Phoenix caught me out on that one) and two black and whites and one black.  Mum is a lovely tortie.

The boy I am picking up later is an older neutered Ginger Tom - don't know the extent of his vision problems - just got to find somewhere for him to go now!
Title: Re: Eight Lives Left Kitten Rescue Update
Post by: LesleyW on October 05, 2011, 11:41:57 AM
Good news.  Just phoned to arrange the pick up of elderly tom and his owners have been to collect him. ;D   Apparently he is blind so don't know how he escaped his home but I am so pleased he has been found - I was beginning to panic as to where I was going to put him.

New mum has finally eaten, turns out she likes the dry food and not the wet, so will go out later and get her some proper dry kitten food to keep her energy up.  She seems to have settled more now and babies are content and playing.  One has beautiful face with a white line all around his top jaw, giving him a really smiley face. :Luv2:

I saw the latest RSPCA advert a couple of nights ago and reckon its breaking the trade descriptions Act cos its implying that the money is going to rescues and most seeing it will believe that means the various shelters and of course that is not true.

They give such a loving caring image of themselves which is only partly true.

Pleased the blind cats owners have him back

Title: Re: Eight Lives Left Kitten Rescue Update
Post by: LesleyW on October 08, 2011, 08:51:05 AM
Unfortunately, new mum got very stressed being contained in a pen with her babies and just sat in her litter tray ignoring her kittens.  I decided to move them down to the lounge to see if that calmed her down but no good, so let her out of the pen to see if that helped and she is now acting like she has lived here all her life and never had kittens - just completely ignores them, even when they were crying in distress :'( .

So I have taken over bottle feeding duties, and babies are now feeding quite well.  One, Aleksandr, (yes it is spelt right - Meerkats  ) is already taking interest in solid food so hopefully it won't be for too long.

Going to visit someone tomorrow who reckons she has a persian that has been living in her hedge for two years!!  RSPCA not interested as they told the woman that cats have a right to roam and therefore they do not pick up strays!!!!

Good news is that Squeak and Fluffy were reserved last night and will be going to their new home together in a couple of weeks. :wooooo:

I am pleased to report that Mimi has decided to feed and look after her kittens again, just seemed to need a couple of day break (wouldn't we all like that  ).  Kittens are pleased but also see me as their second mummy so come running every time I enter the room.

Persian is now with me.  He is a stunner.  Is microchipped but all contact numbers and address deny knowledge of the owner of the cat and seeing as he has been living outside for the last two years it seems likely he was left behind.  His original name was "Puffy"  but I have decided to call him "Bear".  He has been to the vet this morning for FELV/FIV test to be on the safe side.  He is a cuddlebum but put up a fight for blood test and vet had trouble finding his neck through all the fur  , will try and post photos later.

Title: Re: Eight Lives Left Kitten Rescue Update
Post by: LesleyW on October 10, 2011, 10:46:07 AM
Surprisingly he is in very good condition, which made me very suspicious to start with, but it appears that two neighbours have been looking after him although neither could take him into their houses due to other animals.

The property he originates from backs on to the houses where he has been spending his time in the gardens, but they have (or purport to have) no knowledge of the registered owner on the microchip.  His coat is in amazing condition for being outside so I assume one of the neighbours has been grooming him.  Hie teeth are a bit bad so he has some T/D to try and help that and he is a good weight and very strong, as we found out when trying to get the blood.

I am still a bit wary of the story I have been given but the main priority is that he is now in the warm and dry.
