Sorry to disappoint but this is a little different to the other thread we were "discussing". And this isn't to do with disagreeing with a member, it just got me wondering as to why this mum is being parted from her babies when it's going against everything we as rescues advise when parting mum and kittens. I wouldn't want other "members" looking at this thread and thinking well T has taken the babies away so this must be okay, that's why I wanted to ask why so thank you for answering

Modified to add: We have to remember, other people come on the forum and read these threads, if we drum it into them about taking kittens away younger than 8 weeks, what hope have we got if a rescue has done this with no explanation as to why, I personally would feel like a hyprocrite if I didn't ask the question that I'm sure is on other peoples lips.

I so hope that Tinkle does have sight in at least one eye. And best wishes for her little sisters too.

As to Teresas thoughts on what is best for the mother cat, I believe we all had a discussion a couple of weeks ago during which one rescue member disagreed with another rescue member about what was best for a particular cat. It was felt then that the rescue member at the point of need was best-placed to make the decision and I think we need to apply the same rationale here, please.

O dear its seems that some of you are more interested in the ethics of myself and my vet . Such a pity I didnt see this post earlier in the day I could have saved some supposition: but I`m afraid my time is wisely spent providing a high standard of care to my current feline guests,which means forum time is limited.
I normally keep my queens both feral and domestic with their kittens until they are 9 weeks of age for anyone in doubt check over all the old forum threads,they provide dates full stories and usually a little update at rehoming time; I offer a very high standard of care to my rescues and ALWAYS put their needs before my own. My vets are second to none.
After an emergency consultation with my vet yesterday is was decided to spay mother cat immediately and not to return her to the kittens,this decision was based on what both vet and myself judged to be best for both mum and babies given their current state of health.

Hopefully this thread can now get back on track : it is about Tinkle and her condition which you never know may just prove to provide useful information to someone one day.

Mum and babies were only caught yesterday so there is no way of knowing without trying, and even if the kittens weren't suckling, whatever literature you read, the advice given is mum and babies should be kept together for 8 weeks. When they are separated too young, this is when behavioural problems can start, I have never ever split mum and babies up unless kittens are at risk from mum

Maybe there are other issues that weren't posted so I may have got it wrong

Maybe the mum doesnt have any milk left so spaying isnt an issue, im sure teresa wouldnt have sent her if there was any question on her safety.
She could also be of those types who wouldnt cope with being caged for a few weeks, the type you say you spay and release instead of keeping whilst they rear another litter.

Yep, that's true but this one hasn't been in that position and the one you're referring to didn't have babies

This one has been caught and taken to the vets, I've dealt enough with ferals to know the ins and outs of the psychological trauma involved but I also know mum's and kittens should be together for minimum 8 weeks if this is at all possible.

I think it depends on the cat and which is the lesser of 2 evils, Dawn. I recall last year trying desparately to rehabilitate a tortie female about 5 months old, and as she was so quiet initially I thought I might be in with a chance. She was so beautiful and we could have rehomed her 3 times over!

But she just cowered at the back of the pen day after day and looked so, so depressed. I couldn't get anywhere near her.

After a week I realised I wasn't doing her any favours and because she came from a safe area with a very dedicated feeder, she would be better off going back. Maybe I'm too soft but I would also be worrying about all the dust, I know ferals are hard to relocate, god knows I have a houseful of them looking for homes, but they love their comforts like any other cat and one day, I'm sure mine will land on their feet and the perfect home will come up. Apart from the above, I'm just not comfortable with the idea of splitting her from her babies when they are so young

Rebecca is still waiting for the specialist to contact her,however the condition is not congenital,it has most likely been caused by the swelling due to the dust. There is a tiny bit of hope, Rebecca can see some eye structure within 1 eye that she couldn`t see yesterday, so there is a slight chance we may be able to save it, the other eye is useless. Got drops and cream for now but the drops we really need may be dangerous as they are diuretic so Rebecca is going to ring me after she has spoken to specialist. Vet appointment again tomorrow but at least we have a small ray of hope.
Tinkle has decided that she is going to be a glamour model and began her career with a photo session by the vet

Mum cat is feral , and basic rules where there is a safe feeding ground is Trap- Neuter-Return.

No,as mum will be returned to the factory when she has fully recovered from her spay.Whilst the factory is full of this awful clay/plaster dust Mum has total access to outdoors which is a perfect setting besides 2 canals and in open countryside and workmen who will feed her.

Not poor Tinkle, sad as it is she is lucky as she will now get the treatment she richly deserves,she was dehydrated when we picked her up,a sign that she was not coping,she has eaten well infact better than Lou and Lulu. I noticed a slight red line in Lulus right eye this morning so will be getting that checked out too.
Must admit I will be happier when Rebecca tells me the course of action.

After receiving some bad news today, reading this has just flipped on the floodgates. Poor baby Tinkle. Wishing all the best for the visit to the vet tomorrow.

I am so glad she's with you now, Teresa. Imagine her chances if she'd stayed in that place long.

Perhaps it might be an idea to inform the people at the place she came from? There may be something in the atmosphere that could harm people's eyes as well?

Got an urgent call to trap Feral mum and 3 babies in a toilet factory today,thankfully had husband to help carry trap etc as the place was huge and I struggled to walk so far in the dusty atmosphere. The babies have been handled by the workmen and were asleep so no problem in getting them in basket and luckily mum was in the trap fairly quickly despite needing the use of a fork lift truck. The cats and us were all covered in clay and plaster powder which tasted awful .
We had quite a laugh about it being a Bog standard rescue and came up with 3 appropriate names for the kittens Lou, Lulu and Tinkle and all in all a pleasant and successful afternoon until I noticed poor Tinkles eyes.

We dashed to the vets and Rebecca says Tinkle has Bilateral Glaucoma, her eyes are bulging and she is blind. It is most likely both eyes will be removed but Rebecca is going to do some research tonight before deciding what course of action to take and may decide an eye specialist is best,we will know when we take Tinkle back at 10.30 in the morning.

The babies are just 6 weeks old and we have left mum with the vet for spay.
