Title: Hi! Im new here! Just want some advice :)
Post by: pink_kitty on January 04, 2009, 00:05:03 AM
Hi!
Im about to get my first cat, hopefully a rescue.
I live in a very busy area on a road so was hoping to keep the cat as an indoor cat.
I was just wondering if anyone had any advice about keeping indoor cats- i obviously want it to be happy and healthy!

Thank you!!
Vicky

HI Vicky and  :welcome: to Purrs,

Good on you for considering a rescue kitty.  With regards to having an "indoor only" kitty the information on the following thread may be helpful:

:welcome: to Purrs.

Well done your decision, it incredibly fulfilling to have a cat (or two or three) as company.

There are various options to having an indoor cat but certainly an FIV positive kitty is ideal, they live long and happy lives and are perfect indoor cats.

Hi Vicky  :), I would love to care for FIV kitties but mine can go outdoors, if I had to have indoor I would definitely consider FIV, good luck!

:welcome: to Purrs, Vicky.  Do you know the rescues in your area?  There's a list at www.catchat.org if not...

Ask your local rescues what cats they have that must be indoor, deaf kitties need to be indoors the same as FIV and they are often harder to home due to the lack acceptance of the illness  :(

or 4, or 5 or 6 in my case lol

If I were going to home an indoor cat I think it would have to be an FIV, I dont think a rescue would home a cat unless they knew it was going to stay indoors with your area being so busy. Good luck  :)

Hiya, with all this talk about FIV cats, may I introduce my boy Max  ;D ;D

He has FIV, I adopted him when he was about 2-3, and he's been with me for 8 years now  :Luv2:

If you want an indoor only cat, these furries are absolutely ideal, as they have to be inside as their immune system is compromised, and also they shouldn't really mix with other cats outside in case they fight, and they can then pass it on.

In terms of living with an FIV cat, its really no different whatsoever to having a non-FIV cat.

The only think you have to think about is cattery care if you want to go on holiday as some can be a bit funny about this (lack of knowledge is a dangerous thing  :-[ ), but to be honest, if I went away for longer than a few days, I'd arrange for a cat-sitter anyway, so it becomes a non-issue.

Good luck, hope you find your purrfect companion  :)
