I read this thread a few days ago, and made a point of checking salt content of different types of tuna when I went shopping next, just out of curiosity. I found that there was no real difference in salt levels between tuna in sunflower/olive oil, and the tuna in brine - all at around 0.8-1 gram of salt per 100 grams (0.3-0.4 g sodium), depending on make. However, there was tuna in spring water which only had 0.3 g salt / 100 grams.

Just thought I'd let you know in case anyone is interested...

Sometimes I get curious about stuff and have to check it out...

Simba ate some hi life kitten food yesterday hooray

(all by himself) so this morning I gave him some felix kitten food he wouldn't eat it straight away, but in the end he did

so I hope he keeps it up,just got to decide which one to keep him on now, will have to try him on the whiskers kitten food too (and see how he goes) I have so many types because of all the messing around we have had.Might try and stay on the Felix it seems to have a bit more protein in for him.

Have you tried "Feline Fayre" from Asda? - it's all white meat just like regular tuna but with the vitamins & jelly added. Its on long-term offer - 3 x 85gram cans for £1

I know,and it has been so hard trying to get him to eat certain food,our vet said it would be better to get him to eat kitten food for the calories but he just won't eat any, not even the fishy ones,he even turned his nose up at the4 Feline faye food today,and he loved that to begin with, he seems to only like the tuna that is not complete food,but he needs the complete food for the vitamins

If he only eats tuna I think Hi-life do tins of cat tuna .... which I assume has extra things like taurine added to it.

If you type Tuna in the search box it will bring up all the different varities. If you buy a selection it is possible to feed your baby tuna and still have a healthy furbabe

Brine could be very bad for him, as it's just salt water. The oil would be much better and help eliminate cat fur. I think mixing a tiny amount of tuna in oil with kitten pouches is the way to go to rid him of the tuna habit.

Yep I have tried him on the dry food,just won't eat the biscuits whole,he did eat some a few days ago all mashed up (which took forever)with tuna, then went off it again. He has eaten quite a lot this morning, tuna whiskers kiiten pouches with a bit of tuna mashed in,just hope he carry's on eating it at his next meal.

I am astounded a breeder would allow a kitten to eat only tuna - for one thing, it doesn't supply the taurine a cat needs.

I was surprised yesterday when my three were less than enthusiastic about some tuna I put out for them for a treat ... but I'd drained the oil carefully - maybe it's the juice it's in rather than the actual fish they like! Damn ... if I'd known I'd have had it ... tuna ... mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Not sure if hte oil tastes like Tuna, as I hate sunflower oil, the tuna does taste differently, but as a one off it might not be too bad.

) Does the oil absorb the flavour of the tuna? The brine absolutely reeks of tuna hence why it makes whatever you pour it over attractive. If the oil doesn't absorb the tuna flavour then you're better off using tuna in brine for the 'juice', it's only a temporary measure to wean him off the tuna itself so should be OK short term.

the thing is that is what our Bengal kitten has been used to from the breeder we got him off,and we are finding it hard to give him proper kitten food,plus he hasn't been well,as I have explained on another post here.

Its better cos brine is too salty for cats. Tuna should be only fed in limited amounts not as any every day occurence cos it will stop them from eating anything else as I remember being told its addictive

(i mean for the juice to pur over kitten food)
