Title: Diabetic cats and loads of kittens in need of home, please spread the word.
Post by: Canterbury_cats (Sharon) on November 28, 2006, 22:31:50 PM
Hello all
Just posting this in the hope it will get a wider audience.  Downham Market Adoption Centre, Norfolk, sorry dont know their tel number but they are listed on Cat Chat pages.

This was posted through on CP branches emails, so some of you may already know about it.  Cannot believe they have that many kittens in and due in.

-----------------------------------

I’m sure you’re probably all in the same boat, but I thought I’d e-mail anyway, just in case you can help at all.

We have an 8 year old male neutered tabby diabetic boy that we’ve had since the beginning of April that we’re having difficulty finding a home for. He is a dear boy, not really keen on other cats, but will tolerate them. He was nicely stabilised a little while ago, but is now having to have regular checks again. Do you know anyone that might be suitable? A nurse? Or someone that’s taken a diabetic cat previously? We’re happy to take a difficult or long stay or two from you in return.

Also we currently have 76 kittens in our centre and we have 61 kittens on our waiting list still to come in, do you need any? I can’t speak for the ones on our waiting list, but many of ours in the Centre are not socialised, so will need some bringing on, any help would be much appreciated.

Regards
Lucy

Frightening isn't it, and yet there are people who still let their cats have kittens thinking they are doing people a favour or possibly in the hope they will make a penny or two.

Can you tell me what sort of care a diabetic cat needs? I would love another kitten but got 4 cats already, although i would love a house full, dont know how my other cats would take it? ive recently been thinking about taking an older cat on but dont know if i could cope with the loss when it comes to the end.

I cared for one recently, all it needed was to be fed 12 hrs apart and an injection half an hour after its feed, (oops I may have transposed that I cannot think just now, my brain hurts),there are special diet foods but as with all cats some it is almost impossible to make them eat it. So I think sometimes quality of life comes into it.

Also the occasion blood test to ensure the correct dosage of insulin. If there is a problem the vet can give (well not actually give) you a kit for home testing.

Given the correct treatment such cats can  have a happy quality life.

Just a update here. The diabetic cat was sadly PTS last week, he became very poorly and not much could of been done to stablise him.  Feel so sad he never found a home though.

On the kitten front, they are still overwhelmed and having a hard time placing nearly 70 kittens that way, the neutering message has yet to reach Norfolk.  Our branch is hoping to help out in the New Year, as I have abit of a waiting list for kittens going back a few months, although very careful who we place them with.  Apparently some CP branches just were not willing to help and really just want to do their own bit and little else. To me that seems kind of harsh, postcard lotterly I suppose.  After all its not a competiton, every cat deserves a home whether they come from Kent or Surrey!

It is so sad, I know sometimes I feel my best was not enough but at least we give all the little ones a chance and sadly sometimes they are not strong enough to take that chance, if only some of these little ones had been brought to our attention sooner
