Title: Chattin' about.... PURRS CHRISTMAS AUCTION 2009....ANNOUNCEMENT
Post by: Tiggy's Mum on September 22, 2009, 20:51:42 PM
:birth 2: :pressie: :birth 2: :pressie: :birth 2: :pressie: :birth 2: :pressie: :birth 2: :pressie: :birth 2: :pressie: :birth 2: :pressie:

Wait, don't pelt me with rotten tomatoes just yet  :evillaugh: I know it's early to mention the Chr*****s word   :shoosh: but it's all in a good cause  :wow:

For those new to Purrs here's a bit of background... Purrs the forum began very hastily in November 2006 as a result of CatChat having to close it's forum for a time - Tan and her OH, Chappie, got this site up and running within hours *insert halo icon*  Gill and Tan had been planning a Christmas auction in aid of Ron's rescue at LostCatsBrighton and the small matter of not having a forum to host it wasn't going to stop them  :sneaky: And so began the Purrs Annual Christmas Auction (PACA - just made that up  :evillaugh:) in aid of a registered rescue on Purrs. Gill puts a huge amount of time and effort into the auctions every year to ensure they run like a precision watch and I'm sure this year will be no exception  :)

The Purrs Annual Christmas Auction (PACA :evillaugh:) has gone from strength to strength, despite these tough times we find ourselves in, and we really will have a hard job beating last years amazing total.

The 2006 auction raised

The final figure raised is..............     £1656.50

for Ron's LostCatsBrighton rescue.

The 2007 auction raised

GRAND TOTAL THIS YEAR IS               £1836.35

for Lesley's Eight Lives Left Cat & Kitten Rescue.

Last year's (2008) auction raised

TOTAL   2099.94
Plus any extra donation and round ups, less paypal fees

for Teresa's Paws Inn rescue.

Now, more specific info will be posted closer to the time but basically it works like this:

If you have anything in your home that is postable, that you think another Purrs member would like, and more importantly would be prepared to bid on and pay for then it can go in the auction  :wow:

The person who is donating the item also pays the postage to send the item directly to the winning bidder but here's the good bit (did Gill used to sell timeshares?  :sneaky:)... the winning bidder also pays the postage price added to their winning bid to Purrs and this all gets dished out to the chosen rescue :wow:

We've had some fantastic items donated over the years and absolutely everything is gratefully received - even down to a single teeny tiny mousey toy  :)

Bidding can be fierce at times so this is not for the faint hearted  :naughty:

Here's just a few examples of the many (over 170) items in last years 2008 auction - everything from super cool cat toys, beds, books, luxury cards, mugs - the list is endless.

The whole 2008 auction board can be found here: http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/board,88.0.html

Specific details will be announced by Gill closer to the time but the auction will begin around the 3rd week in November and will run for two weeks, so plenty of time to get the items in the post and to their new homes before Christmas.

That gives us all plenty of time to get together some bits and bobs to pop in the auction and to wrestle with ourselves about things we want to keep but know should go in the auction  :naughty:

Phew.... Any questions, thoughts, comments then chat away
  :wow:

Wonderful job Helen, thanks very much

What is frightening is we only have 2 months before it starts, so save save save and that is stuff for the auction and money to spend  :shify:

Any questions ask here  ;D

I've just had a long sit down chat with the boys and they have agreed to give up their mint condition, used for less than 10 minutes, racing car bed that I fought so hard for in the last auction  :innocent:

They were visibly misty eyed when I was explaining about the poor little cats that didn't have homes and how that if they donated their bed it would help the chosen rescue look after another little cat until he/she found their forever home :wish:

Misa says he would donate his fishy at the top of the stairs (but it just is too awful to attempt to auction).

Its a dirty browny green, well licked and chewed and is still damp from a couple of nights ago when It was thoughly soaked by a Misaman.....so generous dont you think as he obviously loves it so much  ;D

Have not posted about so many of my rescues this year but here are some links to some of the cats and kittens who were helped by last years Auction money. every single one was a deserving case and so many of these little ones are now in forever homes enjoying the second chance they have been given All Thanks to The Wonderful People who took part in last years Auction. Thank you All for your generosity and please save everything for this years Needy Rescue.

You may see a mention on one of Teresas threads about a name from the auction, thinks its Charlie near the bottom.

You might wonder why a name from the auction, its because in the last two auctions have had a place where you can sponsor a name for  a cat at the rescue who the auction is for. Usually we end up with a lovely long list at a £1 a name so if you cant afford some of the vicious bidding that goes on, it gives a place where you can put your pound  ;D

In the auction every little helps and at the end of the auction it all adds up and nobody need to be ashamed that they can only give a £1, every £1 counts so much  ;D

Sugar and Spice dug out a revolting-looking mouldy toy mouse from under the sofa and dropped it at my feet this morning. I hope they don't want me to auction it  But they look so darn pleased with themselves..............

I'll will hopefully be able to add some things to the auction this year, I have a few cat themed items that are stuffed in a closet that someone may enjoy!

Though the cookie jar has always stumped me on how to package it!

Always a good cause! (yikes, only 90 odd days till the big C!)

Title: Re: Chattin' about.... PURRS CHRISTMAS AUCTION 2009

That's a nice thought Liz. Maybe i should just bid items up then leave someone else to pay for them ;) :evillaugh: Oh wait. I did that last year and ended up winning quite a few things. Well, if they are not moving too rapidly, I promise to only bid on teeny tiny things that will cost next to nowt to post. Of course, I have the fiendish advantage of being on a different time zone so all manner of nasty things could happen :evillaugh: :evillaugh:

No everything does not have to be cat related but we like peeps to make a cat related story for them going in the auction

Nothing long or hard but say................My cats hate these, so am selling them

The only thing to bear in mind is that you have to pay the postage going out and the winner also pays the postage and that goes to the rescue as part of the auction money.

Its the only way that we can make the auction work on postage and postage rates are sadly horrific  >:(

It takes a long time to stop missing your best friend but in time it gets easier

I will be putting up the instructions for the auction shortly but still feel that summer has just arrived here despite the cold nights!

Oh good ;D he would be v happy with me for getting rid of stuff. He used to like to carefully examine my stock in the spare room. Tippy toeing from one box to another and poking his  head  in open boxes. Climb up to the highest wobbliest box and fall asleep half hanging over the edge. I always remember finding him asleep on a rubber chicken egg!

Hadn't really thought of that MM  :shy: The auction is going to be around the third week in November, with stuff needing posting around 2 weeks later so roughly first week in December - do you know when any strikes are planned for/likely to be?

We cant do that sadly and hope that they will not strike immediately before Christmas and if they do, things will take a bit longer to arrive but it makes the proof of posting even more important so that claims can be made if anything goes missing.

I cant remember exactly what it said date wise but was going on about the massive problem it would cause for xmas sales for the big online retailers etc
Its going to be a big national one, all sorting offices full of mail that will just be left, they shouldnt be allowed to do it. In the current climate they should just be glad to have a job when so many have been made redundant  :(

Are they on strike already in some places. Hubby has got one of these http://www.cuddlykingdom.com/nici-snowcats-50cm-tom-cat-p-5251.html (http://www.cuddlykingdom.com/nici-snowcats-50cm-tom-cat-p-5251.html) arriving for me to put Flumps collar on. Its Flump all over ( apart from the hood and coat with pom poms and colur). But its the kind of thing he would of warn if available in his size at the time  but only inside for fear of embarrassment and being beated up. Nice gesture from lovaly hubby aww :wow:

Aww, that's really sweet of your hubby  :) I think they're on strike in certain places already, just not a UK wide one which would really cripple the postal system.  Looks like Mr Snowcat is coming all the way from Scotland so he might get delayed on his journey to you

I had my Tiggy's collar under my pillow for well over a year until I felt able to put it with the rest of her 'things', her two baby 'brothers' (kittens I adopted after losing her) used to love fishing it out and trying to play with it/chew it, they just didn't get why they were't allowed!

Tiggy had lovaly markings . I had a ginger baby some years ago called George. I got him when my workmate went to pick a kitten from a house locally (living in Bucks at the time). Anyway got there and it was the kinda house you wipe you feet on the way out of.
It was crawling!!
So my friend took a little l.h tabby and this little ging kitten came strolling up to me and started bopping me.
The lady whos house it was said we could have them as she was going to drown any she couldnt home. Within the next 2 hours we had rehomed about 5 kittens I think to fellow cat lovers.
George had really orange fur with a kind of 1960's abstract pattern in a lighter ginger on the L hand side. He only lived 2 yrs and died of luekemia.
Anyway we reported this woman to the RSPCA and the 2 pairs of cats she had where rehomed. Apparently she just let them have one batch of babes after another. Georgies mum was brown with flecks of white, ging in and she was so thin and scrawnie. We went and got some food whilst we where there and made sure she was ok b4 we left. That was yrs ago.

Im keeeping all Flumpets fav little toys and the snowcats going to be my purry substitute for now.

Sonja x

Are teapots and mugs expensive to post..I think each of my ickle bundles ( and noone will ever guess what they are b4hand) will go in med juffy bags. And done up with loads of cellotape as the naughty people at the sorting office somewhere keep on opening our mail.
Had my Royal Canin book come tday for my membership :Luv: and the package had been ripped right open. Has anyone else had this?
Cant be much call for underhand cat encyclopaedias at the moment.x

It all depends on the weight and size of the package and the they are so bloomin finicky....rates can be found on the Royal Mail website.

And on that site you can make complaints and I would if I was you and dont let them fob you off, make sure they investigate your sorting office.

I went on BBC radio Kent sometime ago amd spoke to 2 managers from BM.They said that this type of thing never happens.
Anyway they took my details and investigated it for me.....I waited.

Then about 1001 yrs later they wrote to me with an apology in the letter, still claiming it doesnt happen  and wait for it...a book of first class stamps. Anyway about 6 months later a postman in the district was done for stealing post.
Our postmans  great though..he was wearing shorts today  Brrrr

Yes I feel  sure people will be fighting over this disk version of the Purrs Calendar for 2007/8   Just as well I bought a paper version as well.

I have one of those bergan 5 in 1 turbo tracks which was only played with while I took photos and then catagorically ignored (in favour of a cardboard box!) for a few months before I gave in and packed it away.

Samson has also agreed, rather dismissvely it has to be said, to part with the small scratching post which he's perfected ignoring.

I'm sure those who have won the embroidered blankies the last couple of years will be able to vouch for them!  ;-)

buyers who are having a cat fight is best cos we get more money when thye like the same thing and really want it.  :naughty:

We seem to have the right amount every year and we get a nice amout of money and it's just enough work for Gill to cope with.

So you can be a buyer or a seller - no one minds.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr lost my post while getting this link to last years auction

http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/board,88.0.html

We need sellers to get the buyers and look on the link at a long thread to see how the bidding works.

Its an art form all of its own and very sneakie and me and my helper hannah, try each night to keep the bidding going on as many items as possible for two weeks.

Blooming hard work it is too and the last hour of the last day is CRAZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Instructions for the auction are being worked on right now by moi and I know who is getting the proceeds  ;)

This will be announced in a couple of weeks and not taking bribes LOL

Others are working oon precuring goodies from compamies and think that with all your support its looking good  ;D

Ummmmm what was your question trigger  :innocent:

Help Help Help Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now heres what i need some help with.
We are moving house next Monday and I have found out from AOL that it will take 2-3 weeks to be re connected to the internet.
If the auction is within that period I then cannot put my items in.
If this is the case I would be happy to give them to someone else to put in and I will give them a cheque for the postage and get stuff to them b4 auction.
Im really annoyed with AOL!! I have perdycat wrapping paper and ribbons and bows all ready for wrapping :'( so when whoever wins it, its a nice little suprise.

So I must put my cat blanket in and the pink and fluffy item that is not a poodle having a bad hair day.
I have to do this for Flump, for his memory so please  :help: :allears:

I will also not be on the forum for 3 weeks :'(

The auction will start on Sun 22 Nov which is 3 weeks away but it runs for two weeks to Sun 6 Dec.

I can put your items into the auction for you but will need a photo of each, and a description, plus how much the P&P will be. To get this take to a PO and weigh it and get them to give you a price and remember with packaging it will be bigger and heavier.

With these details I can put it/them in for you or you can if you are back on line again.

Items come into the auction all the way through and bidding starts immediately the auction opens and carries on until the closing time on the last day, 2000 precisely by the Purrs clock LOL

If you want to do this please pm me and we can discuss  ;D

Just wanted to say that you don't need to go to the Post Office to find out how much they will cost to post (I know you have a little one so simple trips become a major expedition!).  You can weigh the items on your kitchen scales and find out exactly how much it would cost here http://sg.royalmail.com/portal/rm/PriceFinder?catId=23500532&gear=pricingcalc

Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on November 11, 2009, 20:45:03 PM
Yes thats about right LOL

You will see when it starts exactly how crazy it is.

THis year the auction is for Sunny Harbour one of our 4 independent rescues so although initially the money comes to Purrs, its then block transferred to Sunny Harbour up to £2000, anything above this will be divided among the three other rescues although one of them is dontaing their share to Sunny Harbour.

If you are an auctioneer you take a photo of the item and once the auction is open you post your item with pic and description. Bidding lasts for just over 2 weeks and then we slam the doors at 1900 precisely by the Purrs clock and and the highest bidder on each wins.

Then the auction staff will formally tell each winning bidder what they have got and how much and we say what to do for auctioneers and winners, how to send the money will be there and all other details.

The p&p is paid by the auctioneer but we like it to be shown in the post for the item cos then the winning bidder alsompays the postage and that gives a bit more for the auction .

All clear  :evillaugh: :evillaugh:

I hope so

Purrdy it sounds alot more complicated than it really is.  Once it gets going you'll see how it works.  It's all great fun and there are usually lots of bidding wars.  As Gill says it gets frantic and highly addictive and without giving away too much I know there are some really lovely auction items  ;)

Don't panic if you miss the first day or so ... as new items can be added at any time during the auction but obviously the longer the item is up the more bids it will receive.

Please help us promote the Purrs Xmas auction - we would love to be able to raise as much as last year which was well over £2000  :wish: We need people to bid on the items and also to donate items if this is going to happen so please help spread the word  ;D Please feel free to copy my signature or even make your own  ;D

If you want to copy mine just copy and paste the two lines below - you will need to take out the XXX at the beginning and end of each line, I had to put these in to display the code.

[XXXimg width=600 height=184]http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z202/Lucas_Riley/P_edits/Auctionsig2.jpg[/imgXXX]

[XXXsize=16pt]http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/board,102.0.html[/sizeXXX]

To add a new signature click the Profile button (top middle) then click on Forum Profile Information (bottom left) then in the Signature box simply paste the writing - simples  ;D

This is a message for everyone, please do not bump threads, the only way they will be bumped is at night time when the night staff do just that. If everyone bumps threads then it will just be chaotic , a bit like x factor judging!

The only other way of moving a thread up is bidding on it, if you want to chat about it please do it in here or on one of the other auction threads, cos there are loads lurking around.  :shify:

Its very hard for night staff to do their job if threads are artificially bumped and we want all items to get the best bids they can   :thanks: :innocent:

Oh good, for once I managed to stay withing the rules without knowing it! Just making threats here me!

So I'm threatening again. I have today taken a very cute little video clip of Chilli grooming Dave but you lot ain't getting to clap eyes on it until you start bidding on the very exclusive, very desirable, Dave cards!

Don't make me deprive everyone now!
Title: Re: Chattin' about.... PURRS CHRISTMAS AUCTION 2009....ANNOUNCEMENT
Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on December 05, 2009, 14:42:53 PM
Threats are not a good thing for auctions, may just be a language thing LOL, I hope so and havent checked the posts yet.

We do not want posts on the auction thread that are not items fro bidding and we do not want posts on any item thread that does not have a bid unless done my me, Hannah or Tan tonight.

Its very important now coming to the llast 3 days of bidding that we keep bids at the forefront and apart from the funnies that come with bids, no other posts.

The aim is to collect as much money for Sunny Harbour as we can and end up with a great last day.

On Sunday night the night staff will be completely changing the order of every thread ready for monday and also that will be the next total, so we roll into monday knowing how much we have and with a clean slate  of bids.

Happy bidding  ;D

Well if i didnt I have now

I notice signs that some are moving in for the kill now and they maybe right cos the list of items is so long, things tend to hide

On the other hand of course some will be really organized and be able to find them again  :innocent:

I had all the things the boys wanted open in tabs but it was going so slowly I didn't get a chance to put my final bids in on them all  :( The boys are gutted, particularly about THEIR train and are asking if they can go and visit MM and her gang  :evillaugh:

Robbie-cute-bum notices you missed the moggy-coins but can't really comment as I had forgotten about them!

I missed them by 19 seconds  :grrrrrr: I swear it was 19:58 when I pressed 'post'  :tired: Oh well, I just won't be able to shop at Jollyes or Morrisons ever again thanks to Snarf  :innocent:

i missed one by 24 seconds darn slow laptop twarting my attempts! id thought you had the trolley tokens helen with the last second sniper bids, had the mymoggy site up to buy some  ;D i think its the only thing i won  :(

I changed it on the list with 2 little stars.

Your totals on the thread should be OK unless the knecklace was awarded to you......if it was let me know and will change that too  ;D

Thank you   I know Hannnah must have been sooooooooo tired last night .. Tan had awarded the necklace to Kirst.

Also, my total is wrong .... it needs to be £36.47. 10p needs to be added to the digital photography book to make it £5.00. Then it'll match my spreadsheet  :-[

Your spreadsheet LOL.......try the spreadsheet for the whole auction.......hannahs air must be blue

I am going to check the list cos Hannah knows it was a bit out but at 0130 that was it for all of us.  :shify:

Hey, my spreadsheet was rather sophisticated thank you very much  :P

I had 5 different tables, with varying combinations of items, with updated totals according .. so I could look at the different totals, know which was over budget and which was good to carry on bidding. Then I had all me post-its which each items maximum bid. Plus I had 9 tabs open in my browser - 1 for each item and one with all the items so I could keep track.

Next year will somebody PLEASE remind me to auction only items with a regular shape and definitely nothing that is fragile.  All day the house has looked like a bomb site - bubble wrap, polystyrene chips, recycled jiffy bags, poly bags, cardboard boxes, brown paper, parcel tape, sellotape, tissue paper, shredded paper  :phew:  and in the middle of it this mad women muttering 'where's me scissors? wots 'appened to me labels? why's this lid off the mug with lid still 'ere when the mug's been packed  :grrrrrr:?  I think I'll go and lie down.

Forgot to add - when I went to post office with them all the lady behind the counter said 'Is this going to be a regular thing?'  :faint:

:lol2:  I was far too frazzled at that point to think of such a sensible answer Christine. I think I settled for a wild-eyed NO.

Carol, you sound a little stressed  :evillaugh: :naughty:

Must admit I've been saving bubble wrap and jiffy bags and tissue paper for ages.

I had all mine wrapped up before the auction - wrapped them up and wrote on the envelope what it was and went to post office and asked how much they would be.

Then all I had to do was wait for the final word from Gill and send them out.  I'm just too purrfect for words aren't I??  :naughty: :P ;)

no need to go to Post Office - scales, tape measure and the Royal Mail website is all you need to work out postage

shame on you Maryas for being so inefficient :P :evillaugh:

Mary

:lol2: Not really - it just took longer than I anticipated.  It didn't help that OH had uncharacteristically recycled my carefully selected stash of cardboard boxes so I had to go out looking for replacements which all seemed to be either too big or too small.  And of course I didn't have Korky to help me this year  :(

I decided to test the panic mouse before I packed it to make sure it was working ok. Put it together and switched it on and Hobbes decided it looked really good and could he have a play with it - this after studiously ignoring it for the last 12 months  Told him it was too late and it was going off to another puss cat to play with cos he didn't want it  Cats - contrary creatures aren't they
