Ok, ok so you've started something now :lol2:

Just dusted off the camera to try and get some better shots.

Naturally neither of my felines were in the modelling mood so here is the best of a largely bad bunch.

Some of the boys and girls that came through Canterbury last year. The first shows a litter that Julie had (Frankie four fingers, Boris the blade, Bricktop, Gorgeous George and Turkish).  The second is Charlie waiting very pariently for his grub. The third is the lovely Strudle.

I dont know Rosella and can hear Gillian laughing her head off cos she will have a very good idea of the sorta photo I need  :innocent:

I notice she hasnt put her red persians in yet and have to say there are some absolutley stunning cats in here but at the end of the day the photo is gonna be what chooses the cat I am afraid.

I think I have seen some candidates! but need to study the photos closely and apart from anyone else who would like to audition, i will probably be asking for some full size pics to be emailed to me by the end of the weekend, cos need to see if they give me what I need cos I then will need to get them printed to work from.

Think I will be going for a number of pictures cos I am not that brilliant at doing pastels like Gillian and have not succeeed doing Franta in any medium to my satisfaction yet ......sigh, so need the one I want to do and a couple of back-ups if it doesnt work!

I also love drawing cats so if I get time.............................. lol. but of course they end up in black and white rather than lovely colour like in a pastel.

The aim is for it to be a fairly large pastel, sorta life size, although if I choose a head and boy are there some temping heads, its likely to be smaller and most likely square.

I am very slow at doing these so you may die of boredom while I take a year

I would like to thank all the cats who have auditioned and for their owners not to be offended if I dont choose them cos I love them all   ;D

Am still open for more auditioning  :innocent:

i have made a list and its far too long lol

so many gorgeous cats not sure how i am gonna chose......sigh

there is one picture that has everything i want in terms of clarity but i have done him before and he is hanging on the wall in my bedroom, albeit a pencil drawing. i think he maybe one of the back ups but not sure i could do him justice in color......sigh

oh boy this is so hard, will go over my list tomorrow cos i have to try and bring some realism into this

some of the cats i would love to have a try at are missing some of the clarity that i would like, or ears or tails lol and i dont really want to make things up as its so stressful, a bit like adding an ear to Timothy which was the last one i did!

I love some of the face only pictures too, and am i up to 3 kittens or two cats  :scared:

I am gonna be dreaming cats tonight I think!

Thank you every one who has added pictures, i am so priviledged to have so many to choose from  :thanks: :thanks: :thanks:

I notice she hasnt put her red persians in yet and have to say there are some absolutley stunning cats in here but at the end of the day the photo is gonna be what chooses the cat I am afraid.

Icos I am not that brilliant at doing pastels like Gillian and have not succeeed doing Franta in any medium to my satisfaction yet

of course they end up in black and white rather than lovely colour like in a pastel.

Its funny, I'm tending more towards black and white/graphite pencil drawings as I've had 'artists block' with pastels for a long time LOL! I have to say, I've struggled to draw my persians - its something to do with the long fur taking away any real definition I think. The only one of mine I've drawn that I've been pleased with is shorthaired Elsa!

I love drawing them in pencil and have from the time I tried the first ones, Zephyr took a long time to do but its a big picture and when I started was just doing the head

Its the long hair I treally want to try this time if I can get a clear enough picture but white or light fur really does lose definition , even in photos.

I had this fancy of doing a ginger/red cat cos my other one was a silver tabby and a big picture again and a longhaired red was my real goal.

However there are so many wonderful pictures been posted I have slipped into dream land LOL but its the big photos which will determine which one,,,,,,,,,,,,sigh

Especially the eyes and do have the tops of ears!

However I love some of the heads that fill the photo butwill again depend ob the clarity. zephyr is magnificent and hard to resist and picture is clear and purrrrrfect.

i keep changing medium and subjects and havent done a cat to completion for over a year, have 3 tries ar franta hanging around but just cant get it looking like him grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, he is extrodinary hard to do cos of his dark face.

The cats whose pictures are going for printing for the final audition are in no particular order  :

Winston, Joe, Mosi, Marley and Layla, Fritzi, Boopys kittens, Noni, Maddy, Nova, Dakota, Sage, the two Gingewrs,,,is it Chilli and someone?, Elsa.

Yes a long short list but think I am going to have probs with Mosi and Boopys kittens photos cos all are under 100kb, actually under 50! Most of others are under 1000kb so not wonderful either but should come out Ok.

Its just the machine allows you to do more things if the picture is bigger and if under 500mb roughly it wont let one do anything cept just straight print and I need to be able to move the pictures cos either top or sides are cut off cos the machines work to 6x4 or 7x5 not as per digi pics.

If I edit to those sizes on puter it doesnt like it at all grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

So 18 cats involved and my personal front runners without seeing prints and with tutors involvement are Winston, Joe and Mosi......yes all red and two out of the 3 long haired.  :shify: :shify: Although one non-redhead I am finding hard to resist in Marley all by himself  :Luv:   That is a face with character.

However I will listen to tutors advice but not necessarily take it

have to say I was a bit biased cos I really wanted to do a redhead this time and was looking for longish fur but I know there are some other great candidates and am sure Sue will pic some of the others LOL

For those not on the long short list, your cats are stunning and I havent done a black and white yet  :shify: :shify:

Black cats are very hard to get the right picture of and also black and white, cos both need all the other shadows and colours showing, which is what I meant about detail, also eyes are very important except in Zephyrs case LOL......he is just soooooo snooty   but I have him on another list cos love drawing him and Sam you didnt send me the picture of him that you put in the audition   :shify: :shify:

Tabbys are much easier to do than solid colours cos of all the colours and patterns in them, told Sue this cat was going to be a challenge and all my top runners will definately be that but can see more than one painting coming from these pictures  ;D

 :thanks: :thanks: to all

I have had to print the pictures today cos may not get another chance....yes pleasee email me the picture  :innocent:

The sad news is that the machines are so limiting and because most did not send me the full original picture some cats are going to be eliminated cos couldnt get full cat on the space they will allow cos the machines work strictly to set sizes unlike out puters.

I have tried to whittle the number of cats down with little succes, except cos of the machine and unless something happens before Thursday , I am just gonna have to discuss the cat with my tutor.

Have to say I am drawn to three inparticular now I have seen the prints, well maybe 4 and a 5th I think is out cos of the photos, which is really annoying.

So thats it really until Thursday and there could be a surprise  :innocent:

my goodness i am out of practice with pastels lol

sue chose two pictures and i picked one of them and am already regetting it lol.

its turning out to be very hard and cant get the eyes right after 3 hrs!

who is it? well it was between winston and nova and i decided to go with winstons head...i wanted tp do a ginger and now think......why on earth cos there is no ginger pastel and not only are the eyes not right but also not happy with the colour lol.

its not coming out as big as i wanted either and feel like starting all over again!

the frustrations of art,

my own favorite because this is one of the best pictures of a black cat i have seen is marley and am thinking of starting him now lol.

however think a number of cats will be done but what order they will be finished in is another matter altogether

A WIP lol ummmmmmmmmm..........will think about it but am very shy with WIP or even finished LOL.

I know in Swansea they cant resist trying to tell you to do this or that , when you have only just started although with me they have moreorless given up cos they dont understand what I am doing most of the time

Have to say there are currently two maybe 3 people trying to do things as I have done but they just dont get it............each person is different and although you may see things you like or pick up tips, it doesnt always work with another persons way of working.

Am still walking past Winston many times a day and thinking, and current thought is that Sue who cannot resist dabbling , especially in pastel, does not understand cats eyes and she has made the eye she moved for me far too human and cats eyes are not the same as ours.

I am fast getting to the thought that the best way to do this is to start again and do it bigger as I was trying to the first time.......I am not doing this as freely as usual and just need to go for it! Its the usual problem  the more you think you know, the harder it is to do things cos you start to imprison yourself.

Yes am very self critical Mary and no artist is happy with what they have done, although somethings look better with time

Whats the forum Gillian?

I know what you mean Manc cat, the pics of my Ollie hardly ever show his real handsomeness  :shy:

I do agree with your last comment CC and this was not about who was most handsome to be honest but about which picture would most likely work for a pastel by an artist in training

I think every cat was without exception wonderful and love all cats as you know and think there will be more than one pastel.....no, I know there will be...................its just some will be easier than others and Winston was chosen cos of the quality of the picture and the challenge to said artist who actually would love to be doing Marley right now

Marley would also be hard to do and the quality of the photo is brill cos as a black cat often looks like a black blob, this picture has all the colours in that go to make up black and dont think Sue was looking at that, just that he was really square on and looking into the picture. Mosi who I have loads of pics of wasnt as shaded in colour as others but have not ruled out any cat that was on the thread to be honest..........nobody is safe

On the art forum I'm on, we show 'work in progress' and describe what colours we used, how we are achieving what we are achieving, or not, as the case may be LOL!  (well, when I see 'we' - actually some of the others do, I just watch and read LOL!) So maybe we can have WIP on this thread Gill  ;)

I would love a  WIP update/report on this thread.    My father was a wonderfully talented artist - I am pushed to draw a stick man, I missed out on the good genes I think!.   Something I always have envied, the ability to draw and craft-  I cross stich but seeing a picture being drawn, watching it come to life by hand, it's a true talent and you either 'have it or you don't.

I agree with Mary - you should not be so hard on yourself.  High 'self expetactions' are fine and dandy - but don't pull yourself down.  You have a talent many of us, me for sure, are very envious of.

I think that rules me out

Yes MS you have the right idea and it is about watching it come to life and that was one thing I was worried about cos didnt know if peeps would expect it to look sorta finished at the beginning  :scared:

The painting starts with the eyes in animals and thats why I know its not right, once the eyes are right then the rest goes on around it and the shades all start light and then get built on.

I have a part drawing I started on Friday and the pastel that was started on Thursday and ironically they are about the same size........I dont know why that is cos wanted them both bigger! Have to say that pencil is so much easier once in full flow cos its getting the colours that often make it start to go wrong.

will think about talkng a photo of each tomorrow although they are both fairly light so dont know how they will come out, just for you MS  :innocent:

Just have to say that when I did Zephyr and Timothy I was so emotionally attached to them after a certain point and so much work, there was no way I could sell either......well if someone wanted them

I tried to get Zephyr into a show where the paintings had to be priced for sale and had advisors telling me the price to put on him that put him at the top end to hopefully stop him being sold....he wasnt selected for the show in the end but I was ill for two weeks till I heard I could go and collect him and what a relief to have him back in my possession  ;D I think I grinned all the way back home  ;D ;D

you are not getting any

I started it again on Thursday from scratch and its bigger and still rubbish...have to move the nose up again, did it once on Thursday , cos Winston is looking like a tiger not a persian LOL.

I am hoping with that change and also moving it slightly across will solve the problem.

It wouldnt be so bad but peeps in class thought it looked like the photo and now its home and I walk past it every time I go up stairs, its definately wrong.......wish they would just tell the truth!

Even my teach is wrong about it and just adding long fur will not do it.........if I can get it starting to resemble Winston I will take a photo but until then..................no LOL

If I cant get him much better on Thursday then probably will leave it for a while and start a different cat!

At least you are able to give it a bash -  and at least are attempting - you'll find your zone when you least expect it - then there will be no holding your back.  Your artistic lecense allows you to portray Winston as you 'see' him

STOP pulling yourself down woman!!!!    I imagine you are a lot better than you may think you are.

Quite right! I know you want your painting to look exactly like the photo - but a painting isnt an exact copy. Of course, you want to get everything in the right place LOL! - but from that, comes your interpretation of Winston, thats what makes artists artists after all. I mean if you got lots of artists to all draw a picture of the same thing, all the pictures would look different, but they would still all look like the thing they drew - if you catch my drift?!!

if anyone does wish to doodle dudley feel free, i dont mind. bless him, hes speshul lol, im sure no normal cat would wake up, sit there with their tongue out long enough for me to find the camera and take a pic, and still sit looking at me until i poked it back in again! he also snores (he apparently could have slight asthma the vet said  ) and he dribbles...as soon as you go near him to fuss him, he just lets it drip off his bottom lip  :innocent:

i love him to bits  :Luv2: just wish i could cuddle him and not swell up and itch  :'(

What is it with 'us' - I have that urge to 'touch' Molly's wee tongue on the rare occasion she sticks it out too   :evillaugh:     One of my old cats, Black, she had a raised palate and snored louder than any human - so badly that she would wake me up with the noise, and I'd have to prod her to get her out of her  very deep snoring sleep so I could get back to sleep myself    - her normal breathing was super loud too.

The more I hear about Dudley, the  more I am falling inlove with him.

Kocka used to just sit or lie there with the tip of her tongue out and against her grey fur looked funny, The only way it went in again was if I touched it LOL

I would love to to do pics of loads of the cats on here and last year didnt do any cats , except failed attempts at Franta but this year I am going to have a cat or two on the go all the time.

Problem is with pastels , its no good in the rain and we have so much rain often I cant get them to the car to take to my classes.

Franta is a problem to do cos of his dark face, just comes out one colour in pics a bit like many black cats.

must try and take a photo of Winston today just for the record you underestand

well yes it is remotely like a cat and possible aslo like Winston but the new one had to go onto darker paper, which is disoirting the colours I think and right now looks more like a tiger than a cat bit hope fully a nose change will turn him closer to Winston.

I prefer the colours on this one grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I've just had a good look at this -  the eyes are so realistic (not your overcritical view of them - but the irises - specifically the irises) - how you (and other artists) are able to capture the depth and composition of the shades and flecks - I see what you mean about getting that as the starting point  -   you undersell yourself Ms Gill - and do yourself a huge injustice.

I bet your black&white pastels are fab!  ;D

There is a huge difference between this latest WIP  and the one you posted earlier - this is remarkable - I really do admire those with talent like this - it must be the most amazing feeling to be able to create from scratch - I am enjoying seeing the (many) changes - there is a lot of work going into this Gill -  the attention to detail is beginning to show now - and yeah, I agree, the nose on this WIP is  better, now that there is the comparison with this and your earlier one (which I still though was very good),  I can fully appreciate you being critical of yourself - it's clear you are very skilled and 'knew' you could make it even better.     ;D   I'm mortified at my own earlier (very genuine btw  attempt!)

Damn you artistic folks,  I'm away to play nice with my blue ballpoint pen.   :shify:  ;D

Am I allowed to ask to see any of your other ones that you've completed in the past?  (or am I pushing my luck!)

Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on February 04, 2010, 18:59:25 PM
Seeing the picture on here the bloomin nose still needs to move across a bit......sigh

Yes that is why I was critical of the first one cos I knew it was not  going to end up how I wanted it to be.

I am very slow at doing these cos like to study them between each attempt, one sees so much with a break. If I get stuck or fed up now, I will put it away for a few weeks and go back to it and start another one of another cat  ;D

One of the big challenges will be Winstons bib cos I want to put that in with fat fur lol, and havent done fat fur before. The final challenge will be the back ground colour and then the finishing touches to the edges of the cat after background has gone in. However that is so far away

If you go into the gallery through one of the top buttons , you will find Timothy that was done two years ago and he is framed now and in my bedroom. Thats why I am out of practise with cats. I did a big owl last year which has been waiting to be framed since July.....sigh

There is also Zephyr who is framed and in pencil and a couple of other things

You will also see Gillians work and she works her pastels on a different paper to mine and once the current paper is finished I will be changing to a yet more expensive paper that will work even better.

All of us have different styles and I know you will not believe me but I only started learning to draw 3/4 years ago and took a beginners art class with a great tutor, the good side is that I learnt loads and some of the work like the wolf were in the first year, the down side or not, is that she teaches across the mediums so I dabble in pencil, pastel, pen and ink. watercolour, acylic and oil! The later two she hasnt taught me, oh I did one session on acrylic with her but that was it.

She runs the club class that I am going to on thursdays where Winston is being done but she lets me get on with it and knows I dont like her dabbling with my pictures unless I ask for help. For me part of the wonder is learning how to do things by watching and especially just doing.

BUTTTTTTTTTTTTT anyone can draw with the right tutor and I watched about 15 of us all start from nothing in Year 1 Art and watched as everyone grew......we were shown pictures done by the previous year 1 and we all gasped and muttered we will never be able to do anything like that......and how wrong we were. It was a wonderful journey  ;D

Gill you are very talented pic is brilliant,

I would love to see you attempt a pic of a battered old tom though, maybe not as pretty but full of character if you understand

Thanks Teresa  ;D

In the gallery is a battered Tom although maybe not as battered as you mean, its Sylvias Tabs , I think his name is.

I suppose I would have to have a real reason for doing a cat who is seriously battered and permanently disfigured but I am sure it would be a challenge just the same as any other cat.  ;D

One spends so much time doing these that its hard not to become attached and right now I dont think I am attached to Winston but only about 10 hrs in!

Timothy and especially Zephyr, I was so attached to, probably also cos they were the first two I have done really serioulsy and both have been hung in an exhibition. The thought of Zephyr going up for sale made me ill and thankfully he wasnt accepted for that exhibition.

When I put them into the Art Societys Show both went in Not for Sale.  ;D

I am a klutz - didn't realise their was an 'arts n crafts' gallery -  - it's a big website and I tend to 'hang around' here.... there are some outstanding artists on Purrs!

You can see the difference in yours from the older dates to the more recent ones.    Wonderful.  I 'hear' what you are saying about  learning - I still think you have to have a natural flair somewhere in there - I don't - Dad tried to teach me when I was a kid,  and in school, art classes were a source of great embarrassment for me as no matter how hard I tried,  my efforts were good for their comedy value only.   :-[

How large is the Owl one? - forget it...just realised you have details - so its not small - is that not harder to work with??  Such fine minute detailing on large form?  How large is Winston's one that we are all loving so far?

The bigger they are the easier they are  ;D

winstons is at least half the size of the owl , maybe a bit smaller.

you have to have the right person teaching you  and i have been lucky :shify:

There's me thinking big would be harder - see - what I know about drawing could fit on the nib of a pencil (boom boom)   :)

I love the artist's impression thugh - Winston looks very regal, looking down on his subjects with poise 'look' in your drawing - whereas in the photograph,  there's a certain aura of "Don't bother me/grumpy but graceful look" but still a huge bundle of adorable fur - I think  you are portraying and catching that adorable grace and regal touch in your drawing so far.

I see Gillian and others are very  very good too - I  hope you do all make money from these - they are stunning.

Looks good Gill - is it the Colourfix sandpaper you are using for Winston?

Yes it is Gillian but once I have finished my stock I will be changing to a new paper which only comes in buff is a bit more expensive but apparently is even better.

Forgotttened the name at moment but its sandpapery like this one but even finer and sort of feels almost velvetty to touch, Sue says its brilliant but then she is a very good pastelist

Bet it still blisters fingers if you do a lot of finger work...........sigh

Oh is it Pastelmat? I've heard a lot of good things about it if so, been told its a cross between the Colourfix sandpaper and the velour which I use a lot. Must get some to try.

To be honest the description doesnt help much except that Sue confirms it holds more pastel than the Colourfix and I have felt it and feels wonderful  ;D

Winston and Marley are looking good Gill -  I love the 'haughty' attitude that comes through on Winston - he has that 'aura' in the original photogrpah- and I'm loving seeing the definition of the 'strokes' on Marley - you've got his nose as cute as a button! ;D   Than ks for keeping us updated,  it's nice to see the WIP.

Thanks, I'm going to try that when I put an order in for some more of the velour, its only in the buff colour I see, shame, I wish they'd do some more interesting colours. The velour pads have mainly beige and greys, with a couple of creamy/golds and a horrendous green

It actually had so many different colours in but only the reddish bits are showing.

I am taking it tomorrow to see if Sue can give me any tips and it also needs a background.

Yes they are almost as bad as charcoal, which I hate.

But the mess will be gone when the background goes in and all black , well nearly all black finished.

Bloomin eyes , one caught some of the black dust that I was blowing away and will have to be touched up again.......sigh.........doesnt show on the photo  ;D

Quite a lot was done to him yesterday but not sure it shows  :innocent:

Sue thinks he is finished except the edges........if he was framed the bottom edge would be at the bottom of the body, so no blue between frame and him......oh yes still have to end of collar  ;D

I didnt do ant Winston yesterday cos arrived about an hour late............bloomin Olympic time still

Oh yes and he doesnt have any whiskers,,,,,,,ummmmmmmmmmm a problem whiskers  :scared:

Would you frame/mount right up to the bottom edge of the fur though?

ah, yes, whiskers - not easy. I don't like doing whiskers, because its always the last thing, and if a bit of pastel suddenly breaks off just as you adding whiskers with a flourish...... :scared:

Afraid I doubt it BB cos I have a big one here that I have been wanting to frame since nearly a year ago, so dont think I can afford it  :(

I guess Marley will go into the pile with other pastels that I have done over last 3 years.....I know my teach would like me to frame them all probably but just not possible I am afraid.

I will post Marley again when he is completely finished  ;D
