Title: Blood in Archie's poo again
Post by: alisonandarchie on June 15, 2015, 18:54:06 PM
Not long back from the vet with Archie. He has been quite quiet and there was blood in his poo again this afternoon.

Vet was very good testing sample, temp and feeling Archie's tum.

Archie has had this problem since he was a young cat and is nine now.

His temp was normal and the sample ok. His tum is bloated so it's the irritated bowel again.

Checked with vet and his diet is ok.

At least it has been well over a year since his last do.

Trusting the two injections will do the trick again

Thank you for your kind thoughts  Looking back he has not been himself for a few days now.

He has just been outside chasing a piece of grass with me so think the injections have kicked in ;D

One was an anti inflamatry and the other to settle the bloated tum

Alison sorry to hear about poor Archie. I had a dog once with the same sort of problem. I used tree barks powder and it worked like a miracle. Here is the link to it. It's for cats as well.

Just back and Archie is less bloated than Monday.

He has had a Dexafort anti inflame injection which will last a week so hoping it will do the trick. The other injection only lasts 36hrs.

Archie is feeling much better this evening and hope we have seen the back of it now.

The vet has made a note that the next time it happens he is given the long lasting anti inflame.

He has not had an episode for a year until this one which is an improvement

Just back from vet as Archie had blood in his poo again this morning. Think I have caught it in time as no obvious inflammation in tum, temp ok too. The vet gave him a good check over and gave him a Dexafort injection which should last 10 days.

So glad the vet has started opening on Sat again

Dexafort is brilliant. Archie was a bit spaced out when I brought him home but has been on the go ever since. Wonder if he could have it orally long term as it really helps.

The vet said it is a strong anti inflam

Archie slept most of yesterday and was off his food :( Knew something was brewing and then more blood last night :(

Vet saw him first thing and has given him Dep-medrone which will last six weeks. David the vet seemed very knowledgable about Archie's condition so will see him next time.

If after the six weeks he is ill again within a month he will have to go on a special diet.

Archie must feel more comfortable as he is more active now. It was another anti inflam

Title: Re: Blood in Archie's poo again
Post by: bickhamwitch on August 09, 2015, 11:00:32 AM
I totally agree Sue. Just google raw diet for IBS cats or something similar. What ever the vet has diagnosed Archie's condition as. Cats were fed by nature thousands of years before man turned all their diseased bad unwanted food into so called pet food for profit instead of binning it. All these terrible conditions, diabetes, cancer IBs etc were hardly known before the fifties when people started to pick up a can instead of the scraps from the butcher. Humans living on junk food become unhealthy. Same with cats.
Julie.

Off to google raw diets, sounds good :)
Title: Re: Blood in Archie's poo again
Post by: bickhamwitch on August 09, 2015, 11:26:38 AM
Alison you need to be careful. Raw feeding is so simple, but you can read a lot of rubbish about it on the internet. Like every thing else really on the internet. It just boils down to what a cat needs. 80% meat 10% bone 10% organs. half of which has to be liver. Nowadays it is so easy because so many firms now do raw diets for cats.  This is a good place to start. They are British and do complete meals, also lots of information and you can phone for good advice.

http://www.naturesmenu.co.uk/advice-centre.aspx

Alfie and my lot use nurturing by nature. I also use another place but these don't give the advice like Nature's menu. I have been raw feeing for 11 years. And I think Alfie's mum has a few years under her belt. It won't harm to at least take a look and have a think about it. The vet doesn't seem to be getting very far. Apart from emergency patch up jobs for now. Maybe raw can help.
Julie.

Post by: alisonandarchie on August 09, 2015, 11:34:04 AM
Wow, thanks Julie looked it up and saw it was complicated :-: The link is great and that would be the way to go.

The thing is Parki would have to go raw too as no good having biscuits out. Am sure it would benefit her too and she really loves raw meat
Title: Re: Blood in Archie's poo again
Post by: bickhamwitch on August 09, 2015, 15:57:00 PM
Alison that is a great start that Parki likes raw meat. Some cats convert easily. With others it's a struggle. If you do decide to convert it is certainly easy nowadays with access to ready made complete raw meals.
Julie.

Poor Archie! I do hope he is feeling better today.

Yes, I feed Alfie and Cleo raw but don't have anything like the experience with it that Julie does. Alfs will eat almost anything but Cleo is a fussy little madam, yet I was surprised at how easily she took to it. It won't hurt to give it a try and see how Atchie does on it.

raw sounds like a great idea if Archie likes it.  I fed natures menu nuggests and another one (natural instinct I think?  still have some in the freezer) to Jaffa and Mosi.  Not tried Kito on it yet.  Mosi is a bit unsure about raw.  Must have another go.

I had to take Archie back to the vet again today as more blood in his poo. He did have another Do a few wks back when Parki had her dental but it cleared.

He has had an injection that will last a week and been given Royal C sensitive biscuits to try and I have a few pouches at home from Parki.

I have to take a sample of his doings in too. The vet will do a colestomy investigation if I want but said it more than likely would be inconclusive.

Poor Archie :( I have to take him back on the 24th to see how he and the diet are going.

Thankfully they both love the biscuits so no probs there.

If this does not work will think about raw

Sorry to hear that poor Archie is under the weather again Allison    I very much hope he starts feeling a great deal better very soon.

When I was poo collecting in our front garden last week I noticed fresh blood in one of the poos.  Suspect Noni as she has had it on and off over the years but no one showing any other signs of discomfort or being off their food.  In fact she is constantly starving but she always is so I'm afraid I'm keeping my fingers crossed and ignoring it  :-[

Rosella maybe Noni has a bit of colitis, seems it is quite common    In the past Archie has had a do then it cleared up on it's own

Is that what the vet's suggested Alison?
Title: Re: Blood in Archie's poo again
Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on October 16, 2015, 17:56:59 PM
Only if it could be shown to me that this was really necessary but if its just a guess and a money bumper for ins purposes no I wouldnt.

Also what would be a possible find they would need to tell you.

I am sure they will make the excuse its just to check that nothing nasty is going on!

I refuse all blood tests on cats unless really needed which hardly ever are.

For Misa in the end, well quickly had to agree for them to do the works cos nobody knew what was wrong with him at beginning of year and he couldnt walk or do anything.

I think a colostomy would be where they'd remove a section of the bowel Gill, so not something they'd undertake as an exploratory.  The only text I could find on it suggests that one of two types of colostomy could be used, but both would leave the cat with complete faecal incontinence.  I'm not sure what quality of life that would offer.
Title: Re: Blood in Archie's poo again
Post by: alisonandarchie on October 16, 2015, 21:05:51 PM
Oh dear think I have put the wrong word in :-[ So sorry :-[ It is where the vet would put a camera in Archie's bowel and take a biopsy.

He said even if they do this the results would probably be inconclusive so has left it to me to decide. Do not really want to put Archie through this unless I think it would help so now in a quandry.

He did mention a blood test too so take on board what you said Gill as this would cause a lot of distress. Will see what the poo sample shows up first.

He is very sleepy today so would think that is the injection.

He seems to have had one attack after another this year and at the moment 15 yr old Parki is in a better state of health :(

colonoscopy I think you mean, where a small camera is inserted into the rectum and then up into the colon. I work for a doctor who does these on humans ;)

Can you remind us of Archie's symptoms Alison.  As detailed as you can and how frequent they occur and how serious.  May be worth reviewing your Purrs posts to remind you?
Title: Re: Blood in Archie's poo again
Post by: alisonandarchie on October 16, 2015, 22:30:07 PM
Thanks Heather you are right :shy:

Hi Rosella, not all the time but a day or two before a bout Archie is not himself that is sleepier and quiet. When he has a poo it is loose and there is fresh blood in it usually at the end bit

I usually take him to the vet at this stage as it may clear but comes back again.

He was having two or three bouts a yr until 2015 when over the last few months it seems as soon as the anti inflam wears off it comes back.

Through a bout he goes off his wet food a bit, half a pouch a day. Vet says it is prob as he associates it with the pain :( Otherwise he eats some biscuits.

He rarely has a temp. The vet also feels his tum and cannot feel any growths, however his tum can be bloated

I have to take a sample of his doings in too. The vet will do a colestomy colonoscopy investigation if I want but said it more than likely would be inconclusive.  Poor Archie :( I have to take him back on the 24th to see how he and the diet are going.  Thankfully they both love the biscuits so no probs there.  If this does not work will think about raw.

I've just been reading through your posts since April Alison and yes I do see that the condition is becoming more frequent.  Dare I ask how much of a careful proper try you have given a change of diet?  Having a hoard of furry piglets here, I know how difficult it would be to introduce a different feeding regime but we have had to do it to separate our lot so they are fed in 4 different rooms.  I just think giving a change of diet a chance is so less invasive to start with?
Title: Re: Blood in Archie's poo again
Post by: alisonandarchie on October 17, 2015, 01:41:03 AM
Thanks Rosella

I  was given the diet at the vets yesterday so only into second day. Both Parki and Archie like the Royal C sensitive biscuits which is a relief as would be tricky to feed sep. Archie has not requested a half pouch of food yet but when he does I have the Royal C sensitives ones.

I have been giving Parki treats when he is asleep as they are a no no for him now.

He is very sleepy and has been on my bed most of the day, not like him at all :(

You are right and good idea to give this new diet a good go first.

I would not put him thro anything that was likely to be inconclusive tbh, cant see the point.

I may also help you to keep a diary that shows what is happening around Archie in the house that is not the norm to see if stress is playing a part.

Just back from vet and surprised to find the poo sample shows he has Protozoa Giardia as never heard of it

Matthew says it could cause all the symptoms he has been having.

He has powders for ten days but have to take him back Friday for check up.

If symptoms come back after treatment then Archie does have colitis on top of this

Has anyone else had a cat with this

Sending lots of   for you and Archie.  Is it Panacur he's been given.  Bunty and Biggles were suspected of having Giardia when they were younger and presented with blood in their poo so the vet gave them that.   I suspect he was right because both got better.   ;D  Biggles, however, started again with tummy troubles and that time the vet did every test imaginable (including Giardia) and all came back negative so he 's now classed as having a sensitive tummy.  Very scientific.  :shify:

Campylobacter is a common cause of food poisoning in humans.  Raw chicken is one of the main culprits, in fact at one time it was reckoned that the vast majority of chickens carried campylobacter on their skins and I doubt the situation has changed.  It's he main reason why the main supermarkets are now selling cook in the bag chickens so that people are not exposed to the bacteria on their skins, and the recommendation is never to wash a raw chicken because you could spread the bacteria onto the sink and anywhere the water has splashed.
Title: Re: Blood in Archie's poo again
Post by: alisonandarchie on October 30, 2015, 22:23:29 PM
Thanks Carol and Allison. Interesting about the bacteria Carol.

I asked the vet where he could of picked it up from, I don't have any sort of chicken in the house, and he asked if Archie hunted. I told him he very occasionally gets a mouse but has not done this for a while.

Hope no one else has fed him but would doubt it as he rarely goes out the garden and is wary of people

I am beginning  to think he may have had this parasite for a few years now :(

He used his litter tray this evening and I cannot remember the last time there was no whiff like now.

It just makes me think how many time are our cats being diagnosed with colitis without testing them thoroughly.

Sasa says she was there but you were asleep, she peeked in to check  :shify: :shify:

She had to put Lupins walking jacket and lead on cos he was misbehaving and wouldnt come when called!  8)

They couldnt see Archie or get in so they are very disappointed and she said to tell Archie that he is supposed to let them in when they call. Her banana (mobile) couldnt get a signal but she didnt know if he had one

Is Archie still doing okay. When I saw there was a post about him I thought there might be a problem. Having disappeared for a while I have lost track.

Archie got on well at the vet and has another week of abs to be on the safe side. I have to take him back next Monday with another sample for testing

The last sample test cost £100 but I think the next one will be cheaper :)

He is beginning to be like his old self again, something i have not seen for a long, long time :)

So happy that you have the old Archie back and he must have been feeling very bad before.

I think if the test can prove that the bugs have bgone the cost is worth it

So glad he's on the mend! Must be such a weight lifted!
Poo samples, such fun ;D

My vet has said if he needs one from Chester he'll just take a swab as its fresher & guaranteed not to be contaminated.

Beats carrying a cat poo in my handbag ;D
