Then there's this one (although with that price tag I doubt they'll sell many!).  Claimed to be a new breed in the making (Ashera) it doesn't seem to be much different to the Savannah

There are many designer breeds, ones who have been specifically cross bred and selected to get a certain "named type breed"

There are some rex breeds who have been "designed" unlike the cornish etc and also the laperms who have been bred yes but after a naturally occuring mutation of a gene.

I don't like the phrase The Toyger is a designer cat.

Just doesn't sit right with me for some reason.

Very interesting debate!

As a lover of the bengal breed I am hardly going to come on here and slate the introduction of any new breed but Ruth is right, these cats are at very early stages of development, and to be honest I think not much more than a stripey bengal at this stage.  There are a few breeders in the UK who have started looking at these cats and breeding them, the biggest one that springs to mind is QueenAnne Cats (bengal breeder).  I shall watch with interest to see how the toyger develops over the next 10 years or so but its fair to say that a lot of bengal breeders remain to be convinced by this new breed.

Sheryl, Jacky at Purebliss is spot on.  F1's do bond with their special person for life, fortunately for Kaiser I plan on sticking around for a long time yet  :Luv:

Gorgeous as they are i dont agree with the breed with so many moggies out there being destroyed it seems like madness to create another designer animal ...dont get me wrong I have nothing against breeders or pedigrees just think that we have more than enough already !

I think lots of cats esp more sensitive pedigrees could or would grieve after the death of their owner.

Jackie the breeder that we are getting our Bengal babies from is going to import Savanah cats later this year, she showed me some photos and they are huge.

She has got an F1 male at the moment that she has rescued, his owners have moved to Brazil.  Jackie was saying that an F1 Bengal bonds with 1 owner for life and that they go through a bereavement process if their human leaves them.

Mmmm

$22000 dollars eh...!

I'd love a proper F1 savannah..or even better just a serval   :evillaugh: :Luv:

There is bengal breeders fairly close to where i live, they bred F1 benglys a few years back and were in quite a few news stations on telly aswell as the papers..their F1 babies were reportedly worth £60-80 K.  Linda would be able to tell you more about that though as she has one from the following litter  :evillaugh:

I noticed these in the back of a magazine. Stunning cats but designing them for the computer age isnt right.
I also dont think a cat which is half bengal is that ideal for apartment life either!   :evillaugh: :evillaugh:

I can understand being a bit against another cat breed, even if they are ultra adorable.

My problem, I can't afford any ;) Or I'd have to go for a spayed older one that would get along with other cats (which seems to be an issue with some Bengals).

I may have to stick with Moggies for now, not that I'm complaining I love cats and would have as many as I wanted if my OH wasn't so mean (something about being able to walk through the house without being killed by a cat laying at the top of the stairs or some such).

I'm with Desley on this - I'm not keen on the idea of more designer breeds.  I think there are enough existing breeds without creating another one.  I know some of the breeds we currently have - eg bengals - were created in a similar way but at leasat they were fairly unique at the time.  There are some very good, responsible bengal breeders around, and people like Linda (and others on here who have benglies) who are obviously in it for the love of the breed, but unfortunately there are too many people who want a bengal as a status symbol (they seem to be the celebrity cat of choice) and I fear the same will happen with Toygers.  And that will mean a disproportionate number ending up in rescues.

I love them. But agree with Mark.... benglies come first in my heart.Took 30 years to get Benglies to the quality breed they are now, so expect Toygers to be the same. Would hesitate getting one. Would get a bengly first.. Probably steal Kai or Lenny... or Lubo.. no Loki.. mm Nova? don't know. Will think about that one!

Afraid I dont agree with the breed - there are more than enough breeds at the moment, and while they are still getting the standard right, there are going to be a lot of pet quality ones needing homes, and we already have an overpopulation issue - I think there should be a stop on developing new breeds until the situation gets better.
Please spay your cat

Nice but a close second to Bengals   ;D
DO NOT BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER ANIMALS DIE

I believe I am not interested to know whether Vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn't. To know that the results are profitable to the race would not remove my hostility to it.  Mark Twain

I have just seen these ... Toyger's (it's not a spelling mistake ... these are Tigers for the home!).

In ancient times cats were worshiped as gods; they have not forgotten this.
