My parents were recently on holiday in Spain, and apparently there was a group of feral cats nearby where people were urged to feed them with medication in their food which 'sterilized' them?
I just wondered if anyone else had heard about anything similar or had any more information about this?
Sorry to be vague, but that's all the info I have at the minute, but on first thoughts sounds like a good programme?

not to sure about that yes sterilize ferel cats but this sounds weird what is the medication?

I have got no idea! That's really why I posted to see if anyone had heard of this before. Its just second hand information I have got from my parents.
The only other thing I can do is to find out whereabouts they were staying tomorrow when I see them...

I found this which suggests there is no safe contraceptive for cats yet :-:

I'm sure I've read about contraception in terms of pedigrees ie for show/breeding cats so they don't come on heat except for when they plan to breed from them, from a google this seems to be an injection which wouldn't be suitable for stray/feral cats
This link suggests it can be put in food but seems it's in the trial stages, I wonder how old it is... http://www.actioncat.com/research.html

Mmm... So its licensed in other countries, but not here. Will be interesting to find out in the future if its effective elsewhere and fingers crossed there are no side effects to the cats or other critters.
I suppose its going to be hard to give each cat a regular dose, and nothing it going to be as effective as neutering is it?

Neutering must be the way to go and hope this doesnt become a trend and an excuse for not neutering!
