Title: Lab results from Star's pre-anesthesia blood work
Post by: my4kitties on October 29, 2012, 07:44:31 AM
I would like to post the results of his blood work, because while the vet didn't seem too worried, I'm concerned about what I see. Are lab results the same in different parts of the world? Would the results of Star's blood work make sense to a vet in the UK? I'd like to post them here, but only if they'd be interpreted the same way in the UK as they would be in the US.

going by the Yahoo group I belong to, cat owners in the UK are in general a lot less clued in to blood test results than those in the US - it isn't even usual to insist on getting copies of results

differences aren't such a problem as Tanya's CRF site http://www.felinecrf.org/ gives comparisons for most of the usual levels

I don't know what diagnosis you have for Star, but you might find that site useful, if you haven't seen it before, as it contains a lot more about blood tests than just for CRF

Hi
The results should make sense as differences between labs (even in the UK and across the board, not just vet labs) is reference ranges. It shouldn't mean this is a problem for a vet though as the reference ranges should be part of the results so if say you were testing for T4 thyroid hormones the result might come back as 5.6 which on its own is meaningless but if it comes back as 5.6 (4~10) it gives you the reference range so at least you know that it is roughly where it should be.

Well, I've decided to go ahead and post my baby boy's lab results:

Here are Star's lab results. The ones that are underlined are the ones I'm concerned about. The ones with both underlining and italics are the ones I'm really worried about. The bolding was on the lab report, so I included it here, as well.

I'd definitely take these and have a chat with the vet. They will know what to look for with the combination of high results.
The calcium level doesn't look too far out of range but I'd go to the vet on the other two.
Good luck

Underlining and italics only show on Purrs if you use the boxes above the typing
