Hi folks,
I took Suzie to the vets this morning as her spells of sickness have been getting more frequent. The vet, a lovely woman examined her. Firt the good news, she's the same weight as she was two years ago when I adopted her, her teeth are fine her breathing is fine, she's free of fleas etc. and her nails are now beautifuly clipped. Now the bad news, I thinkl I knew this but the vet has confirmed that she has a growth (cancer) of th intestine. She felt the growth and told me that Suzie wasn't in any pain as she would have felt her contractions and that this explains her periodic sickness. as food can build up against the obstruction and come back up again. She said there were two courses of action, one to take bloods, x-rays and possibly open her up all of which would cause her lots of stress and probably only serve to confirm what tyhe vet had already diagnosed and the second course of action, which, considering Suzie's age, we both agreed was the best and that was to give her a steriod injectionn which I'm told willl last about 6 weeks and ease the inlamation and perhaps increase her appertite. The vet said that I should cut out any dry food and concentrate on giving her things like the pate food which slips past the obstruction and that;'s what I shall do. She said that if she was sick several times a day then we'd know that her illness was getting deteriorating. I feel that this course of action is the best as she's not in pain and hopefully has a good time left but as you can imagine it is very upsetting news but she's such a tough and brave 'ol girl and of course she's my mum's cat whom I adopted there's not just her and myself to consider. She was such an angel, she just st there and let the vet check her over. Of course emotionally I'm full of mixed feelings, those of relief that I know what has been causing her sickness and that I have her home and safe with me and those of sadness about her illness. I'll have to play things by ear and take every day as it comes and "Letterbox" have their super drummer still.

PS. I bought her a nice new cosy rug to lay on in her new sleeping sspoy under the chest of drawers in the bedroom and some nice pate food.I fanyone has any helpful tips I'd be really obliged.

Leigh, what terrible news .... is there no chance of removing the affected section of bowel and reconnecting it, or is that not something they can do with cats?

The vet said that i8s she was a younger cat then she'd have recommended the X-ray exploratory op aourse of action but, at 17, she thought the procedure wouldn't be the best course.
I am of course very upset but at least I know what the problem is (I think that deep inside I already knew) and more importantly that she's not in any pain or distress and what I can now do to help prolong her life until such times as her quality of life deteriorates and the sad time finally comes for us to have to say our goodbyes. I'll do everything in my power and with herb very best interests at heart to see to it that she lives out the rest of her long and happy life with dignity and loving. I feared that the visit to the vets this morning might have been a sad parting but we have more precious tijme together and that's priceless.

yes there is a fine line between pursuing surgery and allowing her to live her remaining time with the minimum stress - I think your vet is a wise woman, Leigh :hug: :hug: :hug:

Sorry to hear this Leigh :hug: Hopefully the steroids will perk Suzie up and allow you to have as much precious time together as possible. Tiggy had an intestinal tumour, although in her case it wasn't found until it was very advanced as the steroids she was having for another purpose were keeping it at bay. You should see a big difference in Suzie as the steroids start to take effect :hug:

Thank you all for the advice, I've just been reading it. I knew that at 17 she wasn't going to be around forever but thinking it and facing it as we all know are very different things and, even when we've experienced it before as I have with my beloved Oli who also sadly secumbed to stomach cancer. I'm hoping that the steroid injection that she had today will improve her apertite and reduce the sickness and that the new diet will also help, any food sugestions for pate type food would be great. I got her some sheba and also some li life tins.
The main thing is that she's home with me and that whatever time we have left she will be loved even more, if that's possible and live her life in dignity and that's where the vet and I are in full agreement.

I would have a look at zooplus Leigh .... they have so many foods you should be able to get a nice variety of different ones.

Whatever it takes, she gets it, I'm going to post a happy post later about the boys, something that happened this morning whilst waiting to go to the vets, something funny to balance out my sadness

Hi-life turkey giblet pate and salmon pate go down well here. I suppose supermeat is pate really? it doesn't seem to have the lumps of gristle and skin it used to have :sick:
Some of them are a bit solid so may need watering and mixing a bit?
No harm liquidising some food in jelly or gravy if that's what she prefers - if fact it would probably go down easier than pate I would have thought?

I am sorry to hear this diagnosis, Leigh, but I hope with your excellent care and the treatment, Suzie will be around to tickle the drums for a while yet.
My top tip is to mix warmed water (perhaps 20 seconds in the microwave for a cup) with any food that she likes. I do this for Blip simply because she loves sloppy food (I mash up Natures Menu and water sometimes), but I am sure it would work for Suzie and then you can give her all her favourites ;D

Thanks for the great ideas, the problem is that I cannot leave wet food around in the daytime especially when I'm at work as she's too timid to eat it when the boys are around and so I have to feed her in the bedrrom of a night when we retire to bed.
I shall experiiment and see what works best, we shall fight this insiduous disease together.

I've got to share this with yiou all, something wonderful just happened which is why I'm late iin replying.
As you all know all of my puds are very affectionate, it certainly isn't unusual for a big Frankie to be on my lap several times a day at the weekends nor is it unusual for Alfie to be curled up on my lap and very occasionally both of them. What is unusual is the display of love, affection and "togetherness" that I've just experienced. First Frankie jumped up and then Alfie joined him within a few seconds and they both curled up together Alfie licking me and purrting his usual loud purr and Frankie purring louder than I've ever heard him purr and letting me stroke his front legs something that he has never done. We all lay there for about half an hour curled up together. Tehy know how sad I've been today, what stars, as if to say "Thanks for what you've done for our Suzie dad"! :)

Fingers crossed the steroids can have some effect and buy her lots of quality time Leigh. My wet food suggestion would be HiLife. Has the vet suggested any blood tests?

Hi Desley, thanks for the sugestion about hi-life that's the one that has worked the best so far, I'll have to9 see if they do it in more flavours. Yes she mentioned blood tests, x-rays and the exploratory op but we agreed to take it one step at a time with the steroids and dietary changes and see where we go from there. I know that this is a battle that we can't hope to win in the long run but we'll give it one hell of run for its money until the time comes.

When did she last have bloods taken Leigh? I have just lost Mabel to intestinal lymphoma, hers was diagnosed on a blood test (sent off to the lab, they checked everything), but the vet prescribed bland food for her, although her symptoms were diarrhea rather than sickness, although the vet was amazed she wasn't sick with how poorly she looked. I do hope that the sickness can be controlled, as otherwise she wont have a good quality of life.

Thanks for that, sorry I'm late in replying but just cooking some food, didn't think I'd have much apertite this evening but suprised myself. she had bloods about a year ago. So far her symptoms have been the spells of sickness, she's drinking normally and toiliting normally and she hasn't lost any weight but I shall ring the vets on Monday and talk again about the bloods as the vet was alovely lady and told me to call her if I had any concerns.

Thank you all most sincerely for your kind sentiments and great advice.
I am absolutely delighted to tell you that the seteroid injection has started work and Suzie thoroughly enjoyed and polished off two small cans of hi-life tuna imperial which i mashed up even more to make sure it slipped down past obstruction.
We had a good night and she wasn't sick and she is enjoying her new furry mat under the chest of draws which is her new sopt but she did join me on the bed on and off during the night for regular cuddles :)
I am going to go out to the shops this morning as soon as they are open and buy a liquidiser to give me more room to experiment with her diet, she's such a brave 'ol girl and has been through so much over the years, we will fight this as long as she has her dignity and her quality of life is good.
On Mary's excellent sugestion I have started keeping a "food diary" to see which foods works the best.

Hiya! My old boy Sooty (RIP) had a growth in his intestines and on his liver, the vet first felt it when he was about 16, when he was about 17 he started vomiting and was put on steroids, the growths slowly shrank (must have been a lot of inflammation around them I guess) and they only started really growing again and becoming a problem when he was about 19.5. As well as steroids, I had some stuff to give him at night to stem overnight vomiting, can't remember what it was called but it smelt orangey and he hated it! I fed him on Royal Canin sensitive which seemed to slip down really easily and of course it's designed for kitties with sensitive digestion, and it really seemed to help. Sooty finally went to the bridge when he was nearly 20, we had him pts with multi-organ failure in the end, his whole body just gave up at one time.

Leigh we used the steroid route on Miss Gracie for nealry 9 months - she had a tumour in her jaw, she loved hills A/d in tins and also any of the pate type foods and tuna and I used to whizz applelaws food up for her and she lasted a glorious 9 months and went with dignity 3 weeks ago at the grand old age of 19
pretty much we decided that if it could me mashed or liquidised and she would eat it she pretty much gad the same food as the rest, she loved kitten food to so that was treat!

Just a quick posting this morning as I am getting ready to leave for work.
Suzie had another good night and her apertite is excellent. She wouldn't eat one of the Shebas that I chopped up very fine nor would she eat the Science Plan pate BUT she did 100% polish off two small cans of the Hi-Life Tuna Imperial which is what she did also oj Saturday night so I'm delighted with that. It seems funny not to have her on the bed all the time but rather in her new spot under the chest of draws but she's comfortable and happy there.

Hi Leigh, If that is what she likes, I don't think it will do her much harm. I have seen a "boxed set" :evillaugh: in sainsbury's it has 3 or 4 different versions of the tuna imperial. There is one that is tuna & chicken - I forget what the others are. At least the small cans are complete. I know Hi-life do larger cans of tuna but they are just complementary I think.

That's really interesting thanks Mark, my Sainsburys is rather small and pathetic but there is a large Sainsburys about a 20/25 minute walk from work and I'll pop up there and see what they have. She seems to really enjoy it and it is very soft and "mushy" so should be just the thing.
I miss her not sleeping on the bed but maybe it is her ways of preparing me, she does come up onto the bed for a cuddle but retreats back to her "safe" place under the chest of draws where I've made her a nice soft cosy bed. I'm going to buy another of those fluffy carpet offcuts today so as to have a spare.

I managed to get two boxes of 12 tins each of the mixed Tuna flavoured combinations of Hi-Life for her in Waitrose as well as some catnip for her and Aflie. They both love catnip and she'll love it tonight.

Good morning folks,
More good news this morning. Suzie loves the various hi-life tuna flavours. She has never been a big cat or a cat with a huge apertite but the steroid injection has surely given her an apertite.On each of the last three evenings/nights she has polished off and I mean licked the bowl clean, two cans of hi-life. I never have fed her in the morning as she's never wanted any food but this morning at 5:30 she was miaowing lioudly on the bed which is usually to be taken as a very strong indicator the "Princess Suzie" wants something and it occured to my sleep-starved brain that she wanted FOOD! so I staggered half asleep into the kitchen grabbed a tin of hi-life tuna and shrimp flavour much to the consternation of the boys who thought it was an early breakfast for them and she whoofed t down. So far she loves all the flavours, tuna/shrimp, tuna imperial and tuna/chicken and tonight its going to be tuna in jelly. What a result and so far so good as she's not been sick once.
So I sat in my living room and watched the early morning rain with a nice warm feeling inside, no not porrige but the feeling that my little Tabby Princess is happy, oh and BTW she went potty for her catnip last night.

I was amazed when Clapton had his Steroid jab nearly 2 years ago. I really thought we were going to lose him but her perked up and hasn't stopped eating since :tired:

The routine has changed quite a bit, I'm going to bed an hour earlier and getting up earlier. Yesterday evening was fun as you know when we were chatting on the phone. As soon as she senses me getting ready for the night she's out from under the chest of drawers but then Alfie wants to bound up and she'll hiss so I now have to keep the bedroom door closed which has "phased" Frankie as he likes to use the big litter tray in the bedroom last thing in the evening so I had to steer him in the direction of the one in the living room instead. I now have to keep a few cans of Hi-Life and a serving fork in the bedroom so as not to have to venture into the kitchen where the boys think "wayhhhhhhhhhhay breakfast's early today" and I now have to keep the bedroom door shut until I'm sure that she has finished eating her breakfast and give her a chance to retreat back to her new spot before letting the boys in. This has also "phased" Frankie who would trot (on second thoughts "trot" is not the best word, waddle is a better one) into the bedroom to finish off anything that Suzie left from the previous night whilst I was getting the boys breakfast but now the door is shut and, when he did waddle in for "dessert" she'd licked the bowl clean much to his disgust! :). He's also not too happy that the "yummy" sensitivity biscuits have dissapeared from the bedroom but as Alfie's also taken a liking to them, they both get some last thing in the evening. I'm sure that less planning and logistics went into "D-Day" than go into my daily feline routine and would I change things, would I stuff !! ;D ;D

PS. The new cosy carpet square on the bed was a hit as well, she curled up on it, she now seems to prefer slightly harder surfaces to pillows. She was virtually eating the food from the bowl before I could put it down, she's never done that before.

Suzie's eating for England, if they had a feline cat food eating category in Beijing I'd send her over to represent the UK and there'd be a medal in the offering :)
She ate her two tins of hi-life last night, I had a tin on standbye already in the bedroom which paid dividends when she woke me at 4.00 AM VERY vocally and consumed it but was hungry again by 6:15 so had another one!!! ;D
What the :censored: do they put in those steroid jabs ??!!!!, I want one!, she has a better appetite and teeth at the human equivalent of 119 than I have at less than half her age!.
I phoned Clare, the lovely lady at the vets to see if her eating so much, by recent standards that is, could present any problems but she said it was fine and to let her enjoy her food as we don't know how much time she has, she said that if she got diarrhoea then to back off but Suzie's Pooh was just fine last night. The vet was a bit concerned when she rang me back that it was bad news, apparently people ususally only ring when there's bad news but was absolutely delighted that Suzie is doing so well. I told her that I was now turning in at 9 PM so that we could spend more time together and getting up at 4/5 AM and she said that it would dent my social life to which I replied "What's a social life?" and we both laughed ;D

I visited my mum in her nursing home last night. I think I'd make a good propagandist, by that I mean the art of telling "selective" truths and omitting the bits that you don't want to convey. Mum is now thrilled (as am I of course) that Suzie's teeth are in great shape, that she hasn't got a single flea on her body (and therefore none of us have :)), that her heart and breathing are fine and that her claws are now beautifully clipped and that she's had a "jab" which has improved her appetite and is so enjoying her new food and comfy bed in her new des-res "residence" under the chest of draws. That's all true and all my mum needs to know, there's absolutely no point in telling her more and upsetting her and her worrying about something that neither of us can tackle any differently. It's amazing how well I'm functioning on relatively little sleep, must be the adrenaline rush of Suzie miaowing loudly in my left ear at a pitch that nature has chosen as being the most effective natural alarm clock ;D

I take lots of photos of Suzie and the boys and earlier this year I did an hour long video of our manic life at "Kemp Towers" with the pudds and myself just doing what we do at home every weekend with them up and down on my lap etc and Suzie rubbing noses with me on the bed at night time. and we watch this every time I visit her. I know she misses her terribly and the very first thing that she asks me is "how is Suzie?" followed quickly by "how are Alfie and Frankie?" and "What have they been up to?" etc. and most of our conversation is about the cats. I do remind her gently that Suzie is "getting on" but that's as far as I would go and there's so much good news and funny annecdotes like Frankie's recent bob sleighing episode and the T.shirts etc. to recount that we both enjoy chatting and laughing about. She also has to watch the Letterbox animation and loves "there's Suzie on the drums!!", "Suzie in the space helmet", "Alfie on the guitar" etc. etc. ;D ;D

Hiya,
The video is fun, not going to win any Oscars for camera work or directing (can you direct cats?, I think not) ;D but it is one way of sharing our lives with her and that's the whole point of it. I shall have to do another one soon one weekend, I've already discussed it with the puds, they're learning their lines and practicing their party tricks etc. but Frankie will need a "stunt cat" body double for the break dancing routine as, quite frankly (excuse the pun) he's too fat and the floorboards couldn't take it. ;D

Good morning,
No he wouldn't my plan has a flaw or as I rather prefer to call it "teething problems" :). I set it for 5 AM but Suzie was ahead of the game, worked out for hereself that it contained more food and I woke up at 3:30 to the soun of her biffing it loudly to try and open it. I held on until 4 AM then got up and opened it myself, clever girl!!. She had eaten both of her two small tins of hi-life at 9PM in fact she even ventured out of the bedroom and onto tyhe landing looking for me to come to bed and feed her and that's never happened before!. She ate the two tins in the auto feeder thingy as well so she's eating very well, better than me in fact. The boys smelled the tuna and chicken hi-life last night and pesterered me until I succumbed and gave thejm a tin of tuna imperial to share as they'd already had their evening food so I;m off to Waitrose again today to buy more. I set it for 5 AM but Suzie was ahead of the game, worked out for hereself that it contained more food and I woke up at 3:30 to the soun of her biffing it loudly to try and open it. I held on until 4 AM then got up and opened it myself, clever girl!!.The boys smelled the tuna and chicken hi-life last night and pesterered me until I succumbed and gave thejm a tin of tuna imperial to share as they'd already had their evening food so I;m off to Waitrose again today to buy more.

Am so pleased they are all eating so well ;D - maybe you need a trip to the vets for an injection so you eat better too! :evillaugh:

I just popped to Waitrose and relieved them of their last pack of 12 tins of Hi-Life, since last Saturday afternoon I've 56 tins of it and cleaned our Waitrose packs and Sainsbury's pathetic selection of single tins of Tuna Imperial, heaven help anyone wanting to buy Hi-Life "Petit Pate" in Kingston at the moment!. ;D

Good morning,
I'm absolutely delighted to announce that Suzie is doing so well with her food.
Yesterday evening/night/this morning her meals as follows:
5:30 PM waiting for me sitting bolt upright in the bedroom, greeted me with her special loud "I am hungry, feed me!" miaow - Aperitif : 1 Tin Tuna and Chicken.
9:00 PM even louder "I am hungry miaows - Dinner : 1 Tin Tuna and Chicken.
Overnight "snackette" : 2 Tins Tuna and Shrimp
Breakfast : 6:15 : 1 Tin Tuna Royale.
Thank heavens I ordered those 168 tins of Hi-life Pate yesterday. I am phoning the vet today to book myself in for a steroid injection ASAP not "catabolic" steroids (no joke they really are called this :)) but "anabolic" like the athletes take so that I have the stamina to keep up with her ;D ;D

I had a little bit of a shock for a second or two, I've been keeping a close watch on her toileting habits and her stool was a sort of deep maroon colour with a distinct reddish tint. I though "Oh heavens it shouldn't be that colour" but then I thought for a few seconds and it dawned on me "what colour is the food that's she's eating?, well it's a deep red colour so what colour pooh should be coming out the other end?, well deep reddish colour!!" ;D ;D
She jumped, yes "jumped" up onto the bed after her breakfast, gave me a big nose rubbing session and then settled down for a good stroking session purring her head off, she's one happy and contented little cat. ;D

Might be worth mentioning to the vet that she is eating just fish. I know there are all kinds of warnings around but at the same time, I have heard of other cats that will eat nothing else. I was at the cattery the other week - (Sharn runs a professional cattery but has donated 2 pens to CP) one of her regular boarders who is 18 will only eat canned pilchards in tomato sauce and has done for years and he looks amazing :)

Pilchards in Tomato sauce - I've mentioned before that my Tibby lived to be 26 and all she would eat was a large tin of them every day and nothing else.
My Smudgie used to eat a lot of tinned tuna too.

Good point, I did think about that, remember reading that Tuna doesn't contain "taurine" or whatever it's called. I'm waiting on my Sainsbury's delivery today and will then alternate with the Chicken/Turkey flavours. Her pooh doesn't smell very fishy I think that she's extracting most of the food's goodness.
She used to have sardines in tomato sauce when she was with my mum as well as tinned tuna like your Smudge Mary and tinned red salmon in between her regular "bog standard" cat food so she's always been a fishy cat.
Just so great to see her eating so well and enjoying her food. The other evening she actually came out onto the landing looking for me at bed time because she was hungry and she's never ventured out of her "domain" in the bedroom in the two years that she's been with me.
The brilliant thing is that the Hi-life is so mushy and slips down and stays down, I used to feel so sorry and worried for her when she was sick on the bed in the night. It also looks and smells pretty apertising, well I suppose it must be as I've never seen her take to a food so much as this.

It freaked me out Mary, Frankie's so laissez faire that he wouldn't have even batted an eyelid if he'd spotted her, he's such a gentle giant, very little "phases" Frankie as long as he's got food, somewhere to stretch out and nap and my lap he's one happy cat but Alfie's much more lively, inquisitive and territorial and would have gone bounding up to her. I've left an illustrated booklet on the bed entitled "how to open a ring pull can with your paws" in the hope that she'll read it whilst I'm out at work and help herself as the mood takes her. ;D

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww thank you so much for that info and if she has a change of heart food wise I could make one hell of a stir fry with tuna, shrimp and chicken pate and beanshoots actually sounds quite nice must dig out my wok ;D ;D in fact I'd probably have to live off of it for some weeks at the rate that I'm buying things.

Sandra, I know how upsetting this is for you and Snuggs, I think the most important thing is that we all love our cats as much as we do all the time and they certainly know when they're loved. None of us know how long we've got in this world but to have received love and given love is surely what counts the most.

It caused a few raised eyebrows Mary, especially when I told a colleague that I just loved the stuff on toast as, with what they're paying me, I can't afford better food. ;D

I had a delivery of natures menu at work once, about 20 trays, I used to work in quite a tall building in Brentford and three posties with a trolley got everything up to me on the first floor and then helped me take it down to the underground carpark - I felt so guilty I stopped buying it online (my lot stopped eating it anyway!!)

Glad she is still doing well Leigh, it might be worth contacting Hi-Lifes online supplier, smylee pets (www.smyleepets.co.uk - I think), and see what they can do for you. Asda are the cheapest place for the individual tins. The tuna petit pate tins are complete food, so she would be fine on just those, mine prefer the chickeny ones - they did have some kind of offer on at PAH last time I was there, but it might have just been on the boxes of pouches.

Been looking here for the Tuna with Alaskan salmon pouches £5.95 postage. Thought if you spent X amount it would been free but nope.

Hi Leigh, sorry I just found this thread, I am amidst a holiday in the alps and I have been absent for quite a long time... I am so sorry to hear about Suzie's condition. But at the same time I am sure she is in the best care possible with such a loving daddy and brothers, I really hope she will surprise us all and enjoy a full life for a long time yet to come... :hug:

I'm so delighted to report that "Princess" Suzie is going from strength to strength bless her. She ate another 4 tins of Hi-Life Pate yesterday evening/overnight, I gave her more food at 4 AM and she's feeling more like cuddles on the bed, laying on my lap and purring loudly. She really enjoying being spoilt and had Turkey/Liver, Tuna Imperial and Tuna/Shrimp flavours overnight.

Thanks, Suzie is doing really well and still very much enjoying her new food. She had an "off" day on Saturday and didn't eat that much, by comparisson to late, and I was worried that she was slipping back but she (edited as I didn't put she in when I first posted :rofl:) had an enormous pooh, by her standards that is, and started all over again with a vengence yesterday evening/night and consumed several tins of Tuna varieties. Seems like she was full up and had to make room for more and she was very active in the night, jumping up on the bed miaowing loudly and sitting on my chest and laying across me purring very loudly whilst I stroked her.
