Title: URGENT 14 cats! (Manchester) Now upadated with pix
Post by: Maddiesmum on July 01, 2008, 20:06:01 PM
Well I went to see the alcohol lady just now and the situation is far far worse than I anticipated.  There are14 cats, 11 of whom are unneutered (two Toms). One cat has had kittens today and one of the other cats has killed the kittens and the woman doesn't know where the mother is right now.  Most of the cats are not used to being handled.  She burst into tears and said it has all got out of hand and she needs help.  She is prepared to let 10 of the cats go (I just might have a home for one of them) and I said I would try to get help with getting them neutered.  She will hold on to them until someone can take them.  I am sure they wont be vaccinated etc.  I am at a loss to know what to do but something has to be done.  Any ideas would be gratefully received

Ring your local CP (sorry i dont know if you are a rescue or not) and see if they will ring HQ on your behalf to get them all covered to be neutered..

Or ring yourself and see what they say..

Talk to a local vet who may be able to give abit of discount..if you take all 14 cats to them.. Females higher proirity to males.. In the wider scheme of t hings.. Make sure you make a note of which ones are done and which ones are outstanding to be done esp if they are all black etc

Then try to get as much infor as poss on each cat and start to rehome. But first action is to stop the breeding and then rehome.. mum and kittens just born high priority.. Where abouts are you?

I'm in Manchester.  Three of them are done, I sorted that out several years ago for her but this has just got out of hand now.  I don't think she has any idea about the cats' personalities etc just says that most of them aren't used to being handled.  The two toms are fighting it out for supremacy and spraying everywhere (the house smells awful).  The just born kittens are all dead, killed by one of the other cats apparently.  I think I might know which one it is and where it might be but the people whose garden it hides in are not in at the moment.  This is a nightmare

Hope you can get this lady some help MM, as Sharon said I think the first step is approaching CP to see if they can issue neutering vouchers to her to  at least stop the situation from getting any worse.

Whereabouts in Manchester are you?  I can't promise but I may be able to get my friend who runs a cattery to take a couple in and get them neutered them etc.  Send me the details and a contact number and leave it with me   Jackie from the Stockport CP will probably help with vouchers for them  :shy:

I hate to contradict someone as experienced as Sharon, but i would be targetting the Toms as a priority. They can sire multiple litters of kittens in the time one female can produce one litter. So they should be neutered first. They will also be creating havoc in the household trying to make sure they are the fathers of any kittens and if in doubt will kill kittens who may not be their's so as to make the females become available for mating sooner than if they had a litter suckling.

I would disagree BC, although the toms will be causing bedlam, the females will need to be sorted first.  I try and prioritise with colonies, the more females out of the way the better, when they are in season, this adds to the disharmony amongst the male cats which in turn creates more injuries and fighting.

Modified to add
It sounds like there are 8 unspayed females so if left, all will end up pregnant and potentially you could have 40 kittens to deal with

I've just had a chat with Chrissie now and I'm going to try and persuade my friend Sue to take one of the toms, get him neutered etc and have him rehomed.  At least with one of the toms out of the way, this will hopefully settle things down a little bit.  I'll be ringing Sue tomorrow to see if she can help and then we'll sort out getting the others spayed/neutered.

Thanks Dawn.  It's all terribly sad really, the woman is in a mess both emotionally and re the cats.  However she is big enough to sort herself out if she wants to but these little sweethearts really need our help.  The ones she is looking to rehome are a beautiful sleek black unneutered tom aged about 2 she thinks, a black and white female and the rest as far as I can work out are all tabby and white pretty little girls.  If anyone is able to offer them a home or knows anyone who can please contact me.  I think one of the little girls may be pregnant as her tummy looks a little fat but I am no expert.

In these situations (thankfully not many) we have always dealt with females first, on the premise that there is s deadline if pregnant as to which vets will spay and every dya makes a difference. Toms may still be trying to make the queens preg but you have some time topaly with, those that are already you dont. !

What a horrid situation... Let us know how you get on with neutering etc.

Fingers crossed Chrissie, I am glad you have been to see her, and I do hope that some places can be found for these.
BC - males can still produce sperm for up to 6 weeks after, which is why females are priority.

We have moved a stage further!  Have had a long chat with local CP woman this morning and she says they will sort out payment for neutering.  The vet concerned is my old one who I have known for about 20 years so will ring him later to sort out getting the toms done.  I know we should be aiming for the females but realistically the toms are used to being handled and we have to make a start sooner rather than later.  The woman is going to try and arrange to loan us a trap and hopefully we can pick off the females for neutering.  Any help still welcome and I know Dawn is working away in the background so things could change if other people come forward.

I know this may not help in this situation but I've had another email off Josie.  Any kittens that need places, she can find places for them  :)

I am in north london N4.

I can filter them out from here.  I can rehome as many kittens as you like in surrey if that helps?

http://www.animal-lifeline.co.uk/   will take the kittens,  they spay and neuter home check and will have contracts signed saying the kittens come back at 6 months for neutering.

They have a waiting list of homes for kittens :).

They recently took 9 from a group in essex.

we can network the transport between us!

Title: Re: URGENT 14 cats!

This is wonderful.  Unfortunately there are no kittens as everytime they are born one of the other cats kills them immediately.  It would be great if we could get them anywhere the problem is we have to trap them and then it would have to be done very quickly.  If anyone near Manchester can help that would be great.  CP woman this morning said it is doubtful they could rehome the females as they are not handleable (spelling??).  The toms are now booked in for next Wednesday and I have pushed a note through the door as the lady who owns them isn't in.  The vet is sending her pre op instructions through the post.  Still don't know if the mother has turned up.  She hasn't been seen for a few days by the neighbour whose garden she hides in.

I will try and get over next week and give you a hand if you want, I can get the females spayed but sadly will have to return them until we get places sorted.  If anyone is prepared to do a run to London and get them to Josie, any help would be appreciated

It may be worth moving this to the Rescue/Rehoming section in case anyone in Rescue can help  :shy:

That would be great Dawn, I'll put the kettle on.  Wednesday is the day the woman is usually around (though she hasn't been today!).  Do you have any traps you could bring?  There is no problem returning them she says she will keep them as long as necessary

I will put a thread on rescue and rehoming and ask people to look here

Yep and Manchester to London or Josie can arrange for someone to meet part way.  I think the one thing we will be short of as well is carriers, so if anyone has any spare, they would be much appreciated.  With the cats being wildy, they will be better in the carriers and not having to be transfered  :tired:  I should be able to sort some out but not many, I'll ask Sue at the cattery if she has any spare  :shy:

The woman called round just a while ago.  SHe says that the cats can be stroked but not used to being picked up which at least means they are not completely wild.  We think one is definitely pregnant.  This is so good I am so grateful that people are so kind and helpful.

With these babes, seeing as the earliest we can get the boys in is next Wednesday, I'm going to try and book at least 4 of the females into my vets for next week.  I'll go over on Wednesday with my traps and the hospital cages and hopefully I'll be bringing back 5 which will include the pregnant one.  I will then have them spayed, keep them a few days and return them until we can sort out transport to wherever.  If need be, we'll do the same for the next lot, I can sort vouchers so not a problem and the quicker they are done, the better otherwise we will have a few pregnant queens on our hands  :tired:  Also, getting the females done, we will be ending this cycle and kittens won't end up in the wrong hands  ;)

Angie mentioned them being dropped off Sunday but we can't do anything until a Wednesday at the moment  :tired:  She's in Nottingham visiting her son on Sunday and also helping out at a vegan thingie so she could have taken them back with her, but I think the earliest will be next week anyway.  I work weekends and I'm up to my eyes at the mo

I don't think the cats are that big so would depend really, they seem to settle better in pairs but if it's a long journey which it will be, 4 would probably be better.  They'll be no toms cats so you won't have the pleasure of the tom aroma  ;)

Title: Re: URGENT 14 cats! (Manchester) UPDATE
Post by: Maddiesmum on July 08, 2008, 17:56:24 PM
Just seen the woman with the cats.  Seems one of them has gone missing (not been seen for a few days) and another litter of kittens have been born and killed.  She then told me she had found a black kitten at the top of the stairs (aged about 2 days).  Her husband had put it on a towel and now that had disappeared too.  Gave her advice about not feeding after time given by vet tonight and keeping them all in tomorrow so toms can go in for neutering and Dawn can collect however many she can.  Not sure if any more of them are pregnant or even if the one who had the babies was the one I saw that was pregnant.  The nightmare continues :'(

Phase 1 partially completed.  Only managed to get one tom into a carrier.  However one of the females went into the other carrier on her own so have taken her and the tom (Tigger) to be done.  These are the two unneutered ones that the woman wants to keep anyway so it's not worked out that badly.  Just have to try to sort out something for Blackie the other tom

Thanks to Dawn we managed to get 6 - 5 females and the other tom.  The tom has now gone to Dawn's friend locally to me who will have him neutered and then rehomed.  Dawn has taken the 5 females back with her.  There are 2 unneutered females that Dawn was unable to get so we are going to try again next week.  A million thanks to Dawn for her help,

Just got back home now, weather unbelievable but the cats are all fine, a little growly but they'll be okay  :)  All are absolutely gorgeous and as soon as they've settled a little, I'll get some piccies of them.  It was lovely to meet you Chrissie and well done for helping out with these babes, god knows what might have been if you hadn't have got involved  :'(  :'(  Oh, and I feel absolutely knackered, stink to high heaven  so I'm having a coffee and then I'll be scrubbing myself in the shower  :evillaugh:

I know what you mean about the smell Dawn, I can't get it out of my nostrils.  Thanks again.  The cats Dawn took are Smudge, Titch, Malibu, Sheba and Little Titch.  Still to catch are Rusty and Tia.

I am looking forward to seeing the pix and it was lovely to meet you too.  Enjoyed the mars bar and chips!

The cats Dawn took are Smudge, Titch, Malibu, Sheba and Little Titch.

I'm totally in love with Titch, she will be a little darling with some tlc  :Luv2:  :Luv2:  :Luv2:  Smudge, although the naughty kitten killer has also won me over, she has such a cute little mush on her  :Luv2:  :Luv2:  Oh sod it, they are all gorgeous  :Luv:  :Luv:

Pav, once I see them settled,  I think it will be a job well done, it was awful seeing them today and the fact they haven't got a clue what's going on  :'(  One of the little ladies we couldn't catch had babies the other day which were promptly killed by Smudge, your heart goes out to them when you think about what they must go through when this happens  :'(  :'(  I'm just glad it's all over for most of them now, and they can enjoy being the youngsters they are  :Luv2:  :Luv2:

Hope the little ladies settled overnight, Blackie  too.  Thanks again Dawn and I will just be totally relieved when we catch Rusty and Tia too.  All 5 that the woman has elected to keep are all now neutered with help from CP so things should calm down there now.

I've taken 3 of these gorgeous girls into the vets ready for their op tomorrow, I think Smudge, Malibu (just love that name  :Luv2:), and little Titch.  I thought it was less stressful and then Titch and Sheba the other 2 girls will be going in on Tuesday for spaying and to make todays up to 4, I took Charlotte in as well, she's Tarka's mum and she will be spayed and dematted  :Luv2:

It was tom cat smell combined with fillth and grease Dawn!  One of my neighbours told me I stank and I still keep getting whiffs today despite washing all my clothes, cleaning my shoes and having a bath and hair wash.

Fingers crossed the little ones' ops go well. Bless them they have gone through so much.  They did their best to survive in terrible surroundings and deserve the chance to enjoy being happy little cats once they are settled.

Don't forget the pix.

I think I've finally got rid of the smell but have been having whiffs of it all day    I put my coat on today when I went to the vets,  :omg: I felt  , it got bunged in the washer this evening and hopefully it will smell nice and fresh tomorrow  :evillaugh:

I felt abit bad today as I never felt any of the girls that went in the vets this evening, I'm just hoping none are pregnant, but maybe it's best I don't know and in saying that, I'm a little concerned about Titch  :tired:  Chrissie, do you know whether she's recently had babies as her nipples are well up  :-:  Haven't been able to feel Sheba (I assume that's the name of the other Tabby/white that's in with Titch), she's still very hissy with me and looks like she's going to pounce  :scared:  Titch is extremely loving and has been rolling over for tummy tickles bless her but I'm a little undecided what to do, whether to take her in or get the vet to check her first.  If she's pregnant, I don't know how far gone she is with her nipples being the size they are   If she's recently had kittens and they were a litter Smudge killed, it would explain it but I could do with you having a chat with Jackie and finding out if you don't mind

I think Rusty and Titch had the babies.  I know one of the tabbies you have had a litter recently.  Sheba is the black one.  The other two tabbies are Little Titch and Malibu.  I would get the vet to look at her if possible Dawn as then we can be sure.

I think it's Malibu in with Titch and Little Titch is in the other cage Dawn

Malibu is a tabby/white then, that's the one that's hissing at me  :scared:  If Titch had the babies, that would explain her swollen nipples  :'(  How long ago did she have them, do you know?

Can I ask a "Q" please....What does it smell like when you have been sprayed? Is it a musky smell?  :shify:

I suppose it is really, a gross smell and not one that would do you any good on the social scene   :evillaugh:

The cats are now home, Titch has been checked over, there's a little bit of milk there and she has recently had babies.  Sean had a face on him like a slapped  :censored: when I went in  :-:  Apparently, Little Titch, Sheba and Smudge were the worst cats he's ever dealt with  :-[  He said they were like a pack of animals all trying to attack him at the same time, he ended up just putting his hand in, grabbing one and praying he would survive        God help him when Malibu goes in on Tuesday, she is a little scarey  :evillaugh:

LOL the vet who did the other two said Tigger had to be put in one of those special cages and he thought he was going to run up the walls.  They said they thought he was feral and the vet nurse showed me her three wounds.  He is so mild mannered at home if a bit of a  bully.  Poor little mites what they have had to endure.

All babes are fine and settling really well  :Luv:  Gave them all a good fuss this evening apart from Rusty, I'm still letting her settle a little bit but I've had no growling or hissing off her  :)  Malibu is still a little nervous but she's such a cuddle bum with Titch, they really are sweet together  :Luv2:  :Luv2:  I've managed to give Smudge and Titch a fuss, Sheba is still extremely wary but I did manage a couple of strokes  :evillaugh:  I'm sure once they all settle down, they'll be fine, Little Titch is a totally different cat this evening and is getting quite noisy now  :Luv2:  I was going to take Rusty in the vets tomorrow but she'll be going in Friday now, this will let her settle a little bit and I'll try and sort out for moving them next week I think after we've caught Tia but I'll have to have a little chat with Dawn   The main problem I've got is I work weekends and Dawn is going to Brighton on Saturday but I need to get the cats to Warwick   If this isn't possible, I'll have to make the journey myself but I really am up to my eyes in it but ideally I need them in their new home asap  :tired:

Anyway, here's some piccies of the gorgeous girls  :Luv2:  :Luv2:  From the top, we have Rusty, Malibu and Titch, Titch, Little Titch and  Smudge  :Luv:

Hi Chrissie and Dawn,

Have only just caught up with this thread but did catch a wiff of ya both last week when standing downwind of Warrington here in Norfolk :evillaugh:  Poooooooh!

Seriously, you both deserve a medal.  Well done!  Thank the Lord those little babes are safe and well now.  Sad about the ones that she is keeping.  I bet they stink too...bless them.  Three of mine came from a filthy, disgusting hovel and stank to high heaven when I fetched them home, but amazingly when the vet checked them over (I had pre-arranged the appointment so that I could have them examined before bringing them into my house), they were not found to be in bad health....and nine years later, have hardly had any illness at all....touch wood (a thousand times).

And I agree with you Dawn....they are beautiful looking cats.  The two Titch's are lovely. :Luv:

Lots of love

Roz

I'll see what they're like getting them into carriers  :scared:  They may be okay as they're much calmer than they were.  I may be able to part with a couple if that's the case.  I was contemplating taking them all the way to Brighton but hubby went ape because of all the fuel it's costing me at the moment which is understandable.  I put £40 in yesterday to go to Lincolnshire, got a lift on the back of a trailer up to Barnsley  :evillaugh:  and I was still on empty when I got home, hubby was not amused so I have to cut down on my mileage I've been told  :loon:

Blackie will be going into the vets tomorrow along with the two little ladies to have his bits removed  :evillaugh:  All are fine but a little hissy spitty which is to be expected, I put Blackie in with them when I got home last night so he felt less stressed, it shouldn't be long before he settles down again.  If we'd have known I was going to have the cats here this long, Blackie would have come with them to start.  He was stressed out at Sues and was extremely frightened so we felt it best to get him back with his family as I'm sure he was missing them.  He can now be rehomed along with one or more of them and I'm sure he'll be a lot happier than going on his own somewhere  :Luv2:

DD have PM'd you but no response and tried to ring you twice today but no answer.  Just wondering how all the cats are doing and if there is anything I can do to help further.

Sorry Chrissy, I've been out this morning and haven't had chance to answer my pm yet  :-[  All the cats are fine, still need to get hold of Angie again but they've all settled in brilliantly  :Luv2:  :Luv2:  Haven't got a clue who is who anymore as most look the same  :evillaugh:  They decided to make a mass escape out their cage the other day and are now enjoying the comforts of the settee etc and Titch has took to lying next to my feet when I'm on the computer, I am so in love with this little lady  :Luv2:

Oh heck, you will have fun rounding them up then.  Glad they are all ok.  Is Syd ok too and Blackie?  You are NOT thinking of allowing Titch to worm her way into your household are you missy?

I've been leaving their cages open and when I go in, the odd ones are snuggled up in there so it shouldn't be too difficult to gather them up  :shy:  I had the odd I think playful smacks off a couple of the tabby/whites but nothing nasty, Smudge is just  :Luv2:  :Luv2:  Sid is gorgeous and Blackie has let me give him the odd little stroke  :Luv2:  :Luv2:  As for Titch, I love her to bits but I have enough cats to contend with without adding another to the menagerie  ;)

Just spoke to Angie Dawn, and evening will be fine.  If we can sort a day out between ourselves and confirm with Angie this is okay, then we'll take it from there.  There's a couple of evenings when she's out as she does drama but can't remember what days she said

well if I take a half day off work that should be about right, if I leave here at 12.30 I should be at Warwick by 2 and down to Brighton just after 5, I'll need to go to my friends because he wants to come with me to drop off, a Friday would be best for me, do you think she could do 15th?

You lot are amazing. I'm so glad I found this forum, I had no idea what lengths rescuers go to and I'm just really pleased that there are women like you lot in the country!
That's all I had to add. :shy:

I can't see it being a problem, is the 15th the earliest? If we could get them to her sooner, I'd prefer that so I can get my numbers down abit.  I've got a few to sort but I'm chocca at the moment  :tired:

I could try for 8th but have a meeting and don't know how long it is going to go on, it is supposed to be going to be on until 1 so that knocks everything back a bit and I'm trying to avoid the rush hour on the m25 because that will double their journey!!  I'll check with the girl chairing the meeting to see if she knows if we are likely to finish earlier

That's incredible Dawn, I am so happy that the little devils are learning what it's like to be petted.  Good luck on friday and how about a pic of Blackie and Syd?

we're still not sure if Angie can take this Friday, if not I've told Dawn I will try and rearrange to suit her - I know that Dawn has got so much on her plate at the moment fitting everything in is hard

Spoke to Angie and Friday is fine, it turns out she actually lives in Sleaford but can meet you in Brighton if need be.  I'll send you a pm with her address and phone number etc and we'll take it from there.  You'll have to let me know whereabouts in Warwick you want me to meet you and what time

Best of luck with the trip.  Please give the cats a pet from me.  Hopefully they are now going to have the best life possible after the start they had.  Thanks to both Dawns and Angie.

I will do Chrissy   I got it wrong, she lives in Seaford not Sleaford  :-[  I'm sure they'll all be okay, Angie is a friend of a friend and she can vouch for her, her place sounds perfect for them and she has a nice large garden in which they can play in once they settle.  Still not sure who's going yet, it may well be who I can catch hold of first  :Luv2:  :Luv2:
