As part of my clearout to make room for the 3 cats Brodie has gone to Jill and is officially one of the residents that we will sponsor. Jill lost one of ours on Sunday - a black lady of 17 who had been left living in a mattress in the garden when her owner emigrated - Jill has her for about 18 months and Ethel was a fond favourite.

haven't actually used the soft paws as by the time they arrived his neck was healing up nicely.
However, I think the little boy I picked up has brought some fleas in 'cos Brodie and me have started a bit of itching.

Havinig a spray-day tomorrow!!

Aww, the poor baby, thank god he is safe and getting the vet care he needs now. I do hope he can find a new home. We will home with older people as long as there is a back up plan and people willing to help out, although we do generally offer young adults rather than kittens. It is a tricky situation to be in though, I can't imagine not having a cat in my life, but vets bills can be hard to pay.

Oh, do give poor Brodie a big hug from his Auntie Julie. That looks so painful!

I once saw one of those animal documentaries where a CP volunteer went to collect a puss off of an elderly couple who couldn't cope anymore. They were going into a shelter home themselves the next day. It was truly heart breaking and even the cameraman was in tears. The old man kept saying "Please don't hurt him. Please don't hurt him".

Watching that was one of the reasons why I wanted to volunteer for CP as well. Because I wanted to hug the old people too!

Poor Brodie. I can feel what that must feel like; it must be so awful for him. I am shuddering as I write this.

Iv heard of flea collars causing allergic reactions like that.
Has your vet suggested anything to apply to it/bathe it with?

i saw this after seeing the other thread and that injury looks horrific, what has the vet suggested?

i guess i can see both sides of arguement concernig older people and cats but cant imagine me wanting a kitten.

Misa is only 6 years old and if i was say to lose one of the older cats i dont know if i would want a new one but sasa and misa are very special and i certainly cat think of not wanting to have a cat.

i think one of problems with older cats is that they need a lot more care often and there bills can be very high, so this is no good for an older person, hence the desiremaybe for a younger cat.

Don't worry Angie, we get grief for not re-homing kittens to the elderly. We see too many who have to be returned becuase of illness, death and not being able to cope. I'm glad that we stick by it!

I'm glad Brodie's doing well - he's such a handsome cat and fingers crossed he makes a full recovery

TBH I think the lady felt she couldn't cope with him and no malice was intended.

I see a lot of elderly people who feel (or in quite a few cases ARE) unable to cope with their cats and it is sad. Mind you I'm sure we've all come across the 70 yearolds who demand to have a kitten, the coventry rspca got slated for refusing a kitten to an old lady a few years ago. They were trying to persuade her to take an older cat. I think they were right to take that stand though they did not receive much public support, mainly due to the slanted reporting (Its a shame they aren't so critical over other things they do but I suppose in those cases there's no one to speak up and look hurt )

A lady I occaisionally help out has mobility problems and 3 cats so I tend to do the vet run for her. But she struggles with medicating the cats (God knows, I have problems with mine at times lol) and the water bowls are usually full of sliime etc. She 'lives' for her cats who are all in their teens and its odd on who will be the last standing.

Its why now, approaching my 50th, I have said I will have no more of my own as Goose, if I'm lucky will see me to well past retirement age. Mind you I'm not committing myself to sticking to the statement yet!

and I'm sure a few oldies will slip in over the years.

Anyway, back to Brodie, the neck is looking a little drier today though the sod will keep scratching it. We have given his paws a trim and I'm contemplating getting him some booties or something. If anyone has any suggestions as to how I can help relieve the itching or stop him scratching please let me know. He's fine when I'm with him fussing him but I can't be on guard 24/7.

Poor Brodie, that's awful. Do you think the wound is the result of a collar being too tight or is it something to do with a flea allergy - it's horrific whatever it is. Really hope he can find his retirement home soon.

Oh poor Brodie - and poor lady, do you think she had just becaome overwhelmed by the collar injury - let it go too far and thought she was going to get into trouble for it? or couldnt afford treatment? - Obiously I don't know the full story, but I'm worried about the owner too now!, especially as she's had him since he was a kitten. Glad Brodie is in safe hands though.

Don't Panic - Brodie is Safe within the group and now needs a new home.

I first heard of Brodie on Wednesday. The Vet at a local clinic phoned me up to tell me an elderly lady had brought him in and had him treated for a flea allergy.
The lady had then got in her car, burst into tears and asked for Brodie (whom she's had since a kitten) to be pts.

The Vet did not want to pts as even though Brodie is 14 years old he is in good health showing no signs of any age related illnesses.
Brodie is now with me and loves fusses and food.

Brodie did not have a collar when taken to the vets but because of the damage done I can only assume DID have one.
Don't look at the piccies below if you are easily offended. In real life the damage is worse but hopefully he willl make a complete recovery.

Apart from his neck and face, the rest of him isn't too bad. He's had a couple of vigorous brushes which he enjoyed to help remove some of the scabs from his back.

A lesson to those that use collars to check regularly!
