Title: And the POLL results are . . . . . . . . . .
Post by: Harna on March 21, 2008, 19:06:37 PM
Okay, as many of you know, we adopted Wilf and Alfie on Tuesday. They are **phenomenal** and it feels like they have always been here; huge, friendly, confident, sociable and totally bonkers cats!  ;D

Anyway, they came to us named but do not respond to their names *at all.* I know that this could just be because they don't know us yet  . . . but we could call them *anything* and they would run over to us!

My OH and daughter would like to give them different names. I am not sure about this.  :-:

We adopted a pair of cats 18 months ago; strays with no known history, including their names. As they were both persian, we named them 'Anoosheh' (meaning 'happy and contented' in the old language of Persia) and 'Mahla' (meaning 'friendly.') Their names not only suited them well but they responded to them immediately. They were about 4 when we got them and so must have had different names before then . . . .

Would it confuse Alfie & Wilf to change their names? It didn't confuse 'Noosh and Mahla . . . . . We are not really 'Alfie & Wilf' people (if you understand what I mean . . .) but I don't know whether changing their names would be the right thing to do . . . . out of our previous 4 rescue cats, we kept 2 of the names and chose 2 new ones . . . . .what should we do this time?!

I would really welcome some thoughts here  . . . . .. !

Thanks!

Oh - and PS: I took my lovely neighbour with me when I drove over to get the cats - I was worried about the long drive home and thought someone else in the car with the cats would be a help (it was!) Anyway, my lovely neightbour just popped round to let me know that after visiting the rescue centre, she is going to start looking locally for a pair of cats to adopt! Isn't that great?!  :Luv2:

Before I got Foofoo I would definitely have said keep their names but not anymore.

Foofoo was a stray and obviously we didn't know her name, but she definitely responds to Foofoo/Foof when I call her.

Oscar (mum's cat) had the same story and he too reponds to his name  :shy:

Great news about your friend too!! ;)

I have only rarely re-named a cat when it was adopted. Bob, because between his looks, voice and name he sounded like a girl, sofie, simply because I felt gertruded did not suit her. I suspect a lot of cats who come through rescues are simply named so that they are not referring to them as cat number 08/536. So, no, if they do not respond to their present names and you are uncomfortable with those names, then you should feel free to call them whatever you like. Bob was called dinar when he arrived. I called him Bobcat, two syllables, similar sound (when you vocalise it) and he came to recognise that as the sound that meant food. No problems. Names are a human conception, animals simply associate a particular sound with a positive (or negative) experience. In short, go for it ;D

I'd rename them if you don't like those names and they're not responding to them. I adopted a sealpoint persian called 'Muppet'  and she was 15 years old when she came to me, but I couldnt see myself calling her that, so called her Millie, and she responded to that, although I think its more the tone of voice you are using rather than the actual name.

I mean my George was George right from when I had him as a kitten, but he responds to my silly voice calling him 'Kitty Cat' more than to George! Mine have all got nicknames anyway, so don't think any of 'em know what their proper names really are LOL!  ;D

So what names you got in mind then?
Title: Re: Controversial, perhaps . . . should I rename my recently adopted cats?
Post by: Harna on March 21, 2008, 19:31:52 PM
Actually, come to think of it, we very rarely called our cats by their 'real' names!

Leo (name he had on adoption) was called: flo, liebs, liebling, flea-o (when we first got him!  :sneaky:)

Marble (name she had on adoption) was called: Marbyshire-Derbyshire (no idea why! )  Marbs, Marby, but most often Bish

Anoosheh (named 'Marie' by RSPCA) is called 'Noosh, Noosh McSploosh, Sploosh, The Mighty 'Noosh, Floofster, Floof-Sploosh, etc

Mahla (named 'Duchess' by RSPCA) was called Mahla-Moo, Mooster, Moo- Moo,

As you say, it's more likely the tone of voice . . . . .

okay - the names that have been suggested by the rest of the family are:

Rufus

(this was actually going to be my daughter's middle name, had she been a boy!) which means 'red haired.' (Maybe I should point out that my OH, in the days when he had hair  :evillaugh: was/is a redhead; that dark red 'titian' colour))

Bertram

(from a book my daughter read recently - quite a substantial name!)

or

Tugby

(when I was a kid in the 70's, my favourite book was about a gingerbread man band. The band leader was called Tugby. My parents passed this book on to my daughter and ever since we first read it to her a couple of years ago, my husband has always said that if we ever had a ginger persian, we should call him Tugby . . . .)

So, two out of the above, probably . .. .  .

most pet animals have alternate names, depending on whether they are in or out of favour, mine respond to anything from their name to the sound of a can opening ................... And Shadow is called shadow, smootch, puppy and a variety of other names all of which he is completely happy with. In fact if I call him shadow in a particular tone of voice it is time for the ears to go back, the tail to go down and the face to become incredibly cute and appealing.... :Luv:

Actually - here is the shortlist. Two of the following:

Rufus
Hector
Bertram
Tugby

These cats are BIG (over 6kg each) with personalities to match. Wilf is dark red, Alfie is more 'strawberry blonde.' Wilf is the more sensible, constant, calm one, whereas Alfie is a bit mad. (He is obsessed with sitting in the bath when it is empty, but jumped in with me and water in it this morning  ;D - and he also licks plastic and runs around the house with a zoom ball in his mouth  . . . .)

I am desperately trying to upload some pics but it's just not happening. Here is the pic of them, caged at the rescue centre. They now look 100 times better, btw!!!

OK, then Hector or Rufus for Wlif, as Hector held the bridge and Rufus has a good steady sound to it. Tugby for Alfie, as it sounds similar. Mind you, my great uncle wilf was a good steady sort of man too, so am quite taken with Wilf as a name (we actually knew him as Uncle Blue as he had red hair, but that is another story ...)

Well,
Sophie- (blue persian ) named when i got her and it stayed and she responds to it ( also "old girl "as she is nearly 14)

Bungle - ( blue and cream persian) - named and tried to change it to Blosom, Bonnie, -but would only take notice if i called her Bungly - also Cheryl said not to change her name !( also gets called bungly bum, + grumbly )

Winston  - ( Red and White persian) -was called Whisper - bit feminine for a BIG butch cat who ain''t quiet at all !!! - so tried to think of another name that started with W - came up with Winston which he answered to really quickly and he Loves his catnip cigars ( also gets called wee willy Winston, willy wobbly , willy wonka, wilikin cat , the ginger whinger, the ginger peril !!!!)

Smartie - (Blue tabby persian)  was called Sparticus !!- always knew he would be named Smartie and he also answered to this really quickly - (also called Smartie Pants, Smartie Martie, Martie  etc)

Post by: Corporal Smokey on March 21, 2008, 21:19:40 PM
I have two unusually named cats. Josh came to me with that name but is now nicknamed "Joshbot" for two reasons. One is the end of the show Lost when the little voice says "Bad Robot" we used to say "bad Joshbot" and then similar with the Fiesta "Stupid Dogbot" ads.

Smokey isn't my favourite name, I'm not a fan over overly obvious names so we added the "Corporal" bit because of the way he looks! He gets called Smoo Smoogoo Snooogy Smoogy Snuggly-buggly and many other such names. The thing he responds to instantly everytime is that "tutting" noise you do to random cats to get their attention. Because he always comes up to us in response, we always make sure there's a reward such as a snuggly bed or some nice food for him.

Josh responds on his terms-well he IS the boss.

I like the Freds' names but I like Rufus and Hector too.

Not sure of the circumstance of these puds, but most of the cats coming into our have their names changed anyway. For medical and financial records, we need names to be individual and you'd be surprised how many Tibbles we take into care.  :evillaugh:

Actually, even if a cat responds to its name, the association is with food. So puss thinks 'Tibbles' means grub is on the way. I have to say that only once have I known a cat to actually come over when its name is called, unless I'm simultaneously filling its bowl.  :innocent:

To make you feel a little more comfortable, I did a straw poll of the kittens I rehomed last year. About half the owners have chosen to change the names I gave them. I was a bit upset as I thought I'd chosen names that really fitted them, but on the other hand I'm not having to live with those choices for the next 14-20 years.  :shy:

I wanted the place where mine came from to call him Dexter .. instead they called him Pinky       Anyhoo I renamed him Memphis. I actually called him Dexter for a couple of weeks but it just didn't fit. However, my mum wanted me to call him Captain Jack (CJ) for short as he has a lot of Captain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean) attitude in him.

The new choices are great - especially love Tugby!!

My wee man Bertie came with his name and I HATED it - everytime someone asked my cats name I apologised and explained I didn't pick it!! He was such a regal cat and Bertie just didnt suit him!! However he responded to it -if he was sat in the hall and I was in the living room he would come running when I called his name and sit on my lap - I could call him from anywhere in the house!!

My latest two rescue boys are Edgar and Oscar and I quite like the names - so we are keeping them even though they don't respond to them!!

I like Rufus and Tugby and think they look those names  ;D

I have renamed all my cats and the first one who just walked into my garden reacted to Kocka straight away. Misa and Sasa know their names and Sasa was called Honey by CP and she was there a year but does not react to Honey at all.

My other two were call Napolean and Wellington! I was told they idnt react to their names after 12 years and then heard them referred to as Naps and Wells. So have added on my name to their original one bur call them Ducha and Franta. The latter cant hear so doesnt matter but suddenly discovered that Ducha reacts occasionally to Wells or Ducha Wells!

I'm horrible with names!

Penguin was named that from the rescue, he answered to it as well so it's stuck.

Smoke was originally Megan but didn't answer to it and to be honest my husband picked her name out on the walk home to get the car to pick her up. (she also answers to Ham)

Lirael was Kay when she was with the breeder, I'm sorry but Kay is a horrible name for a cat with enough personality for about a dozen cats.

Harley & Quinn were unnamed and I named them, the poor things :)

I love the name Tugby! :Luv2:

I too was told to keep the boys names when I adopted them.  To this day we think the previous owners must have been Man U fans:

Sol - Olle Gune Solksjaer
Fabian - Fabian Bartez

Sol does suit his name because he is full of sunshine
Fabian - hmm no I don't think so but I tend to call him Fabes and he does answer to it.

My Mum always says Foofoo should have been called Pom pom and Fabes should have been called a name to reflect his beautiful copper eyes.

I personally dont change names, although I know quite a few people do when they adopt our cats. I have only once felt the need to change a fosters name, and that was Swiggy - normally, I put up with names i dont like (such as Martha), as it is better for the new owners to change it, but I couldnt live with a cat called Swiggy!! The rescue lady often changes names as they dont always stick in her head, so they get something new!!

I take the same line as Des. I have only re-named one of our 7 and that was purely because of a name clash - we had a Tiggy and the addition of Tigger would have been confusing, so after watching him and thinking hard, I named him Barney.

Obviously there are no rights and wrongs. My own view is that a cat gets used to a certain sound and pitch which is usually his name, so why change it?

The point Pinkbear makes about names... You just wouldnt believe the mess we get in with cats that have the same name in our care.. Even similar sounding names.. not only does it confuse the vets, but i get totally confused.. We try not to use the same name more then once in a year.. some people do keep names actually.
The ones i remember as being really good are
Sushi
Piccollo
Cornflake
Otis
Duma (which is African for Thunder)
Morpheus
Noodle
Asterix
Dhama
Mouse
Gandolph
Hovis
Yalo
Bindi
Gremlin
Myrtle
Hebe

Off my past siamese was called Yoyo and suited here really well. Actually my two cats Leo and Bella do know their names very well.

I dont have cats with similar sounding names, yet still managed to call Zi Moses earlier - and to make it better, one is b & w, one is tortie. Zia does answer to her name though, and Molly does.

When we adopted Leo and Lawrence from the local rescue last year the woman running it told us she named the cats alphabetically. We have  kept their names although they don't really respond to them, usually though we call Lawrence Larry or Lazza.

The last cat we adopted came with the name Inca but he was a stray and didn't really know his name, so we called him Ozzy but usually he gets called monster cos hes so naughty :Luv:

My friend at work recently adopted two cats called Erick and Amber but Erick got changed to Samson.

Liking the names Rufus and Tugby, have you decided yet perhaps you should run a poll ;D

The responses have been great!! Thanks!!  ;)

We haven't decided yet. Mainly due to the fact that we went out yesterday to buy new memory for the computer, ended up buying those really groovy soundsticks for our Mac but then realising that the 'office' is in such a state that we've spent all day clearing out boxes and boxes and boxes of junk! The cats have been having *great* fun! :)

Anyway, I think that Tugby and Rufus are highest on our list of preference . . . . although running a poll would be GREAT! How do I do that?!    ;D

Pictures to follow when I can find the computer (typing this on my husband's laptop whilst we take a breather from the dust and junk!)

Bertram (NOT ' Bertie' - which we are not keen on.)

Or, should we keep their existing names, Alfie & Wilf?

My husband and I were just talking about the characters of these new cats of ours. Wilf is very much the older, sensible brother although he is quick to give love and is a real softy. Alfie, on the other hand, is as mad as a box of frogs (licking plastic, jumping into baths full of water, being a general clown) and really seems to play the role of dopey younger brother. In fact, my husband likened him to the brother in 'My Name is Earl' (did anyone see that Ch4 show?) - and then we had a giggle thinking that we should name Wilf 'Earl' and Alfie 'Randy'  . . . . .

But no - we will wait for the poll result at the end of the month and then we will reveal what we have decided to do!

Keep voting!!!    ;)

Cute names by the way. I personally think Rufus and Hector are perfect names for the gentleman. Reminds me of Hector Helizondo  ;)

I just had to google 'Hector Helizondo' as I had no idea who you were referring to!  :-[

We've always liked the name Hector, but it gained more significance with the Morrissey song - our daughter used to sing it all the time when she was about 3 and proclaimed that if she ever had a little brother, he should be called Hector!

Incidentally, Rufus was going to be our daughter's middle name had she been a boy!

(I think, in hindsight, Hector and Rufus are better names for cats than kids!!!  ;)  )

Well I know what I meant  :evillaugh:  Have been really busy with work and having mini early mid life crisis, heating broke for over a week - had 4 different engineers coming and temporarily fix it before it broke again, car broke down - twice, fence went up - then came down again in the strong winds before the concrete could set

They are coming back on Monday to re-do the fence but it'll probably be quite a while before I get a chance to get the catproofing up, will make a concerted effort when it stops raining/snowing/blowing a gail!

Isn't it funny how we give our cats additional 'pet' names!  :evillaugh:

I used to call my Willow 'pinky' or 'little minky moo'
and i call Merlin 'little-black-boy-from-illanoi' or 'little man'

Random!

Well, first of all, thank you so much for voting - it's been fun!  ;D

OH, daughter and I have had a chat this evening and we have realised that it is time to make that decision . . . . as you are aware, the cats came to us with the names Alfie (pale red) and Wilf (dark red.)  They weren't bad names but we weren't sure that they were. . . well, 'right' for these chaps. They certainly didn't respond to them!

And so we asked you to vote - and vote you did!   :thanks:

The results showed that the majority preferred Rufus, followed by Tugby. So, what have WE decided to do???

We were overjoyed; these were the two favourites of ours, too!  :Luv2:
We had  thought Rufus for Wilf, and Tugby for Alfie.

However, now we are not sure.  :tired: In the time that we have been waiting for the poll to conclude, we've been calling the cats Alfie and Wilf. Or Alfred and Wilfred. Or, referring to them as The Freds. Or Fred1 and Fred2. Or 'big chap'. Or 'BigLump'o'love'.

And now we are not sure if they are really suited to Rufus and Tugby - although that breaks our hearts slightly as we have always wanted red persians called Rufus and Tugby . . . . .  :-[

So, for the moment, we are sticking with Alfie & Wilf. But we are going to sleep on it - so ask us in the morning!  :sneaky:

I hope you stick to Alfie and Wilf, I picked these two names   :shy:   I have an Alfie of my own and I just thought Wilf was a such a cool name for a cat  :Luv:  :Luv:

Wilf is a lovely name. I had a great uncle Blue whose real name was Wilf. He was the loveliest man I have ever known......... sweet, gentle, protective of his woman (auntie anne) and yet practical, hardy and a real worker. He was the best! :Luv:

 :heeee heeee:

Okay.

Well, as you know, we did think we would name them Rufus (for Wilf) and Tugby (for Alfie.) Trouble is, in all the deliberating, we've got used to calling them Alfie and Wilf - or, more often, Alf and Wilfred, or The 'Freds.

And this afternoon, both went to be introduced to our vet and they are now officially registered . . . .as Alfie and Wilf.

I have mixed feelings about this - I have grown to love the name Wilf and it's a name that really suits this chap, but not so keen on Alfie. However, he's a bit of a pickle and somehow it fits. Tugby would have fitted too  . . . . . but. . . .  . .maybe they'll just have to have middle names!

I think that some other day in the future we may well use the names Rufus and Tugby (especially Tugby, which is we think is a SUPER name for a cat of immense character . . .) but for now, the 'Freds will stay as the 'Freds!

So, thanks all for voting - it was fun!

Alfie & Wilf. It's settled.

To be honest, I doubt they'll get called their real names much (unless they are doing something naughty!!  :evillaugh:) Just ask Noosher-Sploosher-Floof-bar, our other cat

Hurrah!!!!

We love *all* cats in this household but have an extra-specially soft spot for persians. (Alfie & Wilf are our 5th & 6th persians) In fact, my OH, not usually prone to such statements, said yesterday "I don't think we could have normal cats-with-noses now . . . .)  :Luv2:
