I always thought they are anticipating eating it!  :drool;
Cats were once gods; they have never forgotten this, nor have the people they own.

It's definitely a common response in cats. I'm told it's to do with their jaw making the "killing prey" motion - but that's just one theory on it.

Yep I think that's the one in my book but wanted to check first  ;)   I've also heard that that the chirruping is mimmicking the birds, probably all part of the same activity.

Yup - standard response to birds viewed through the window!  Or squirrels in Mosi's case.  He gets rather excited.  Mosi makes a sort of clicking/chirrupping noise.  Jaffa not so much but I have heard him make it.

 :evillaugh:  Our Squeaky used to do it all the time watching the birds through the window.  I have a cat book which says what it's all about I'll try and find it.

chirruping,  cliccking, twittering ... yep pretty much ALL cats do it!  It's usually accompanied by rapid tail thrashing as well.

They just get all excitied at the sight of "prey".  All my lot do it and each one makes a different noise.
In ancient times cats were worshiped as gods; they have not forgotten this.

It's not a problem at all, I'm just inquisitive !

I have noticed one of my boyfriends cats sits at the window and whilst watching birds or squirrels makes this really odd clicking sound with his mouth open ??

Had anyone ever heard their cats do this ?!

What does it mean ?
