Title: Very very shy cat in need of very very patient home - Devon/Cornwall (Homed)
Post by: littlebrambles on April 20, 2011, 00:17:11 AM
My name is Silver and this is my story............

I'm an incredibly handsome British Shorthair male cat. I'm 4 yrs old and have an amazing thick plush Lilac coat with a tiny weeny bit of white on my face and paws.

When I was a kitten I was bought by a breeder along with my brother. The idea was that one of us would become the stud cat and that turned out to be my brother. So the breeder kinda forgot about me. She fed me and cleaned me out every day but left me in a catpen on my own in her garage and day after day I sat , sat and sat some more. I never got to see inside the house, watch the tv, cuddle up on a sofa, sunbathe on a windowsill or know the love of people. After three years the breeder's house was repossessed and Aunty Louise kindly offered to find me a new home. First of all she had me neutered.

So last summer I went off to a lovely new home where the people spent months gaining my trust and teaching me about all the things I have missed out on. It was a very scary time and progress was understandably slow. I began just in one room and sometimes even allowed them to stroke me. I was a very good boy eating my food and always impeccably clean. I was very nervous about being touched though as it wasn't what I was used to but over time I started to settle a little and relax. I did see other cats around but I really didn't like the boy cats though the ladies were alright!

Then a little while ago a great sadness came over my family and it was decided that it was better for me to find a new home. I've come back to Aunty Louise's house but the whole thing has really unsettled me and now I'm not so sure about anything anymore. I've reverted back to being very very shy and hiding away though I am eating well and using my tray as gentleman should. It's just that I hide under the covers when anyone is aorund.

What I'm really in need of is a quiet understanding home where they will give me time to get over my trauma. I know I will be a great cat one day but for now I need the right sort of family that can be patient with me and let me be the cat I want to be for now. I won't make any promises but I'd like to think that in a few months you would see that all the hardwork and understanding would begin to pay off. I might even become a regular cat ( well that's my dream anyway)

So if anyone in Devon/Cornwall area feels that they would like to find out more about me please please contact Aunty Louise. I really need to find that right family very soon. Please have a think and give us a call.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.

Oh my goodness. It that how some cat breeders keep their cats?

I presume they have to have a licence to breed, so how do they get one?

What an awful life he has had, almost semi feral.

I hope he finds a good home soon.

Poor Silver  :( I really hope he finds the right sort of home really soon. What a terrible shame  :(

Sadly many stud cats are kept in relative isolation for years, with perhaps visiting queens to keep them company. It's a way of controlling the mating and heaven forbid that the toms might spray in the house.

It's perhaps not a good idea for me to go down the breeders are awful route on this topic though, tempting as it may be  >:(

I will try to get a picture of Silver but I don't want to make him any more anxious than he is.

He's a sweet boy who is just terrrified of everthing. He will allow me to stroke him but clearly is unsure of what happens next.

He's a very sad cat who just needs the right people to understand him. He has had a sort of twilight existence, he hasn't had the life of a feral or the life of a cared for pet cat. Poor love. He is just one of many cats though that have lead that type of life and still do today.

It is shameful.

I don't know why the penny hasnt dropped before with me. When you see pictures of certain sites offering ex breeding queens and studs for sale they are usually pictured in outside housing. I just naively  presumed that was temporary, but obviously not.

I have over the years been tempted to buy a pedigree cat, but, I am so glad I didn't. There always seemed to be a rescue cat that needed a home at the time, so the rescue cat won. I am so glad now I didn't buy and add to the misery.

I really hope Silver finds his forever home very soon.

Is Silver living inside with you? If he's indoors I highly rate Feliway plug ins, if he doesn't have one I'd be happy to order a plug and refill and get it sent to you

*Wants Silver* How sad - poor boy being deprived of company and mental stimulation that way.

What a lovely offer, that's really very kind and thoughtful of you.

Yes he has the Feliway around and he's also on Zylkene at the moment, just to get him over the changes. He is indoors with me in my kitten room in a small pen to help him feel safe just for now.

Naturally anyone who adopts him will have ongoing support and backup from myself. He had made huge strides in his previous home - sometimes things just don't go to plan though and now he's back here with me once again.

He is a huge chunky chap. So if anyone likes big shy softies - he's your man !!

Not all breeders are bad people though

Glad he's got some Feliway already, I saw something called Kalm Aid (think it's a gel) mentioned on here before. Think it was Steff who used it on some semi-feral kittens so might be worth looking into.

Not all breeders are bad people though

Yes, I was going to say the same - there are breeders who care deeply for their cats and whose cats live the life of luxury.

It's the ones like poor Silver's owner that give pedigree breeders a bad name and there's no doubt poor Silver has suffered at her hands  :(

Oh the poor boy - sounds a bit like Stevie when he first arrived, terrified of people (but OK with other cats)

I do hope he finds his forever home soon. BSH are normally such friendly  , socialble cats too. :( :(

Silver has made some small progress. He has purred this week whilst being stroked and I detected the very faintest of head butts  :)

He's still looking for that kind new mummy who is going to make his dreams come true.

Silver will be going to his new forever home this weekend. I'm absolutely delighted.

Finding a home for such a complex cat has not been without its challenges but I am very optimistic that his new home will be just perfect for him.

At last he has a wonderful future ahead of him where he can be the cat he chooses to be.

He has made enormous progress throughout the months he has been with me. It may not seem much to an onlooker but to me it's a huge testament to the wonderful nature of felines that Silver has begun to relax and trust me, albeit only a little. It will be only natural for him to revert back to his timid self when he moves home but I know with time and patience he will make a great cat companion.

My only wish now is that the evil person who penned him and neglected him for a large part of his life never ever gets her hands on another cat, ever.

Happy hunting Silver - I'm going to miss you very very much but this is just what you truly deserve  :)

PS I'll move this to homed section after the weekend.

This lovely boy was taken to his new home this morning. Thank you so much everyone for your support, means a great deal.

He has got acres of land to explore and a devoted owner. Just perfect.
