Smartie seems to have some kind of problem inside his nose - the vet isn''t sure but most likely is a tumour :'( :'( :'( :'(
I took him back last night and he said a x ray will only be for his advantage and there is nothing he can do if it is.
It could be benign -but its made his eye weep a bit and it looks slightly smaller than the other eye.
His nose looks fatter across than it did and he thinks there may be fluid there -but that invbolves sedation and a needle putting in to draw the fluid out to see what it is .
He is well , eating and drinking ok , but starting to look old now ( he is 14 1/2).
We are tring antibitics first to see if it is some kind of infection inside his nose -but because of his heart problem he doesn''t want him on steroids just yet as it can cause more problems than he has now -including heart failure and his herpoes flare up.
He needs special healing vibes for a very special cat who means everything to me .
-
I am so sorry to hear that Smartie is ill and hope that it is not as bad as thought
Sending lots of Smartie vibes
-

Sending lots of   for Smartie and his Mum
Just a thought bit sometimes a steroid injectin can help with suspected tumours I know we used them on our late Miss Gracie she had one in her jaw and she had another glorious 9 months at her age we didn't want to do any intervention and she was a wiley old feral girl but tolerated the injections

Thanks everyone.
There is no change in the swelling ,he has been on Antirobe almost a week now ,am waiting for the vet to ring to see if anything else can be given -otherwise he will go on meloxidyl (sp)?
My sister went back yesterday and everything just got on top of me and i spent the whole day on and off crying .
The vet doesn''t know what it is either and i don''t want to have him messed about too much due to his heart problem -but his eye seems to be more open this morning -i have bathed with Optrex 3 times a day and put cream in at night- its just the swelling on his nose which is affecting his eye and no-one knows whats causing it -without possibly sedation and a needle up his nose to draw some fluid off which is there.
He is so special and we have had lots of cuddles this morning and hoping it will get better soon.
-
So hard
-
Poor Smartie, sending lots of get well wishes his way
-
:grouphug:
-
Just spoken to the vet and he is going next Friday for x ray and a needle to see if he can drain some fluid from his nose.
I could have had it done Monday, but have to go out Tuesday and Thursday ,so I wanted be in for a few days after to keep an eye on him.
Hope I have done right in waiting till then, but if I think he needs to go sooner I will ring them.
The main vet isn't in every day though and I trust him so wouldn't let another one do it.
Do you think I should have it done earlier ?
I am afraid of the anaesetic too , but the vet said I shouldn't worry and he would do it if it was his cat to see if it will help and what it is.
-
I think you have to go with your judgement if the vet is happy with that
-
sending more  x
-
Thinking about Smartie
-
Also adding to the good wishes and hugs.x
-
Sending loads of get better vibes for Smartie xxxxx
-
Thanks everyone.
There is no change -to be honest , he looks like Mike Tyson has punched him on the nose and its resulted in a black eye as well -its just swollen  :scared:
He is now going in on Wednesday for a x ray (heart scan at the same time as he has a enlarged heart -thats why i am worried sick over the anasethetic ) and a needle up his nose to draw the fluid out and see if they can find out what it is .
-
Sending best wishes for Wednesday
-
Sorry to hear he's no better :(
Will be thinking of you both on Wednesday : hug:
-
I have bad news
Smartie has nose cancer , it's in the tissue and the bone and quite advanced , the vet says its hopeless and nothing he can do , I think it's a matter of a few weeks . :'( :'(
I am absolutely devastated, he is the most wonderful natured and loving cat that loves his cuddles.
-
I am so sorry to hear this and love him every day for the rest of his time, these will be special but hard days
-
So very sorry to hear this Gill :( Please try and treasure the time you have left together
-
So sorry to hear your awful news
One of my friend's cats has cancer in what by the sounds of it is in a similar place to Smartie. When the lump first came up they operated and removed as much as possible then he had chemotherapy. This all started around March time and although the lump has grown back for the time being he seems to be doing OK.
-

-
Smartie is still eating and enjoying cuddles, but is sleeping a lot too.
His nose and eye look bad now , yesterday he washed it and the tumour in the corner started to bleed :'( :'(I bathed it with Optrex and it's been ok since.
He had to now have weekly steroid injections and then see how they work.
My heart breaks every time I look at his little face :'(
-

-
Sorry to hear this Gill  My little sealpoint BB managed just under 6 months with the steroids (she had a tumour in her jaw growing into her mouth). Hope the steroids will give you some extra time with Smartie   BB's tumour bled too, I hadnt known to expect that so found it quite frightening initially.
-

-
How did you go on at the Vet Gill?
Mary
-
Smartie went to the vet last night.
All they can do is give him long lasting steroid injections .
He seems fine in himself ,eating, drinking and lots of cuddling.
He is still lying in front of the fire with belly up and legs in the air and if you didn't look at his face you wouldn't think there was anything wrong with him.
Only trouble is when he washes his face he sometimes catches his eye and it bleeds :'(
-

:grouphug:
-
Smartie had a bad night and I thought it was time :'(
His eye had been bleeding and he seemed to be disorientated and not eating.
I gave him aviproplus and sat with him and this morning he has eaten ,drunk and seems slightly better.
In all honesty now ,I think he will be lucky to get through the week end.
I feel permanently sick inside now as it will shatter my heart when he goes.
-

-

Thanks everyone.
As I said he had a slow release steroid injection that supposed to last 3 weeks, but as he was so bad Thursday night, I decided yesterday, to give him a 1 mg tablet as in this situation I decided it couldn't do any more harm.
Last night and today ,he has perked up , eaten loads, and been cuddling in bed all morning and so far no bleeding !
I will continue to give him the 1 mg tablet every day now and hope it helps him for a bit longer, he certainly seems happier today, will have to take each day now and see how he goes.
The healing vibes are helping too.

Just wanted to get a bit of support I guess.
He isn't having a good evening and didn't want to eat earlier, gave him his tablet and he ate a few hours later.
His eye is really bad and don't think he can see out of it.
Worrying if I am keeping him going for me sometimes, then the next day he is sometimes better, eating cuddling and enjoying the fire as usual.
I know it's getting near the time to let him go now , just think its a matter of a few days now if that :'( :'(
Just feel so numb really and my head is all over the place, I am scared to,go out and leave him in case he goes downhill and I am not there .
-
So very sorry that he is going downhill and the final decisions timing so hard

Vibes for Smartie.
-
I am afraid he is having another not so good day today, not eaten much ,but i was up at 5 am spoon feeding him and he ate a lot then.
I think the tumour is also progressing down his nose now as he is sneezing a bit.
I have ask the vet to ring tonight and see about making a decision now , I am hoping he will be ok for another couple of days and that I think will be as far as I can keep him going and not suffering. :'( :'(
-

Smartie is still with me, I spoke to the vet on Monday, and after a long talk , decided at the moment he isn't in any visible pain, so have put his steroid tablets up to one 5mg per day .
He is still enjoying the fire and eating small amounts, he just looks a bid odd with his eye and nose ,but he wil always be my handsome boy .
-
You know everyone is living this with you, Gill. :(
My heart goes out to wee Smartie and for you, his devoted Meowmi :care:

So sorry to hear your awful news
One of my friend's cats has cancer in what by the sounds of it is in a similar place to Smartie. When the lump first came up they operated and removed as much as possible then he had chemotherapy. This all started around March time and although the lump has grown back for the time being he seems to be doing OK.
Gill, my friend is going through exactly the same as you now. Last week we all thought it was Simba's time to go but at the weekend he rallied again. Sunday he was out in the garden having a wander round, scratching on the garden fence and generally keeping all the other furries in oder.
The vet has told my friend that as long as he's still eating then it's OK for him to keep going. Like your Smartie, he does look a bit odd with this huge lump on the front of his face but other than that he's still his sweet gorgeous self.
Sending you a few of these    as seeing what my friend is going through I know how it must be for you.
-
Gill, just thought I would update you on my friend's kitty, Simba. He went to the bridge today. The vet came to my friend's house and he was PTS in her bedroom on the bed, so a very peaceful passing. My friend and her husband are in bits but I know they did everything in their power to make sure that Simba's last months were happy and pain free.
RIP Simba :'( :'(

Just to say , i think Smartie will be going to the bridge in the next couple of days . :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
He is looking like a really old man now and his eye and nose are steadily getting worse, he is having more bad days than good ones and i think its time before he starts to suffer ,which i obviously dont want .
I have to let him go and not keep him here for me as i love him so much and will not let him be in any pain.
Will update when i have spoken to the vet on Monday .
-
I am so sorry that he has gone downhill and am sure you will give him the right time to pass to the Bridge
I feel so much for you and was thinking about Smartie today, somehow the right time often becomes obvious and am sure Smartie will guide you
