One of the things which really annoys me are videos like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTUZN425uDs
especially the comments which go along with them.

If you have time, click the 'see all' to read the comments. I'm muskndusk and try to encourage neutering, but get attacked for doing so.

So many comments are along the lines of "I can't wait till my cat has kittens". People just see the cuteness and don't consider the consequences.

The video is of a Himalayan and her cross-breed kittens. She must have got out while in heat, and her 'owners' were not experienced breeders. I don't agree with pedigree breeding when so many cats, moggie and pedigrees, need homes.
Cats were once gods; they have never forgotten this, nor have the people they own.

It is so upsetting and it's the hard work that goes into it that people do not realise - even just brushing a cat or cleaning out a rabbit's cage is far too much for some lazy idol people.

My friend grew up with Harvey Smith's sons - not sure if any of you know who he is - a show jumper.

She's in her 50s now and she still has horses and boy does she work hard looking after them every day.  I used to help her out when I was younger and fitter  ;)

It just upsets me.

I used to own a horse, spent my life in and out of livery yards helping out with chores etc.  Then some idiot comes along and starves their horse because they can't be arsed to get the right food in, or visit their horse on a daily basis to feed, water and muck out.

Not seen it much with horses but in my 25yrs of dealing with horses, I've seen 6 cases.  I don't want to imagine how many cases of mistreated cats and dogs there are :(

Like most things in life - easier said than done.

So much cruelty in the world - to cats/other animals/children/elderly.

Some people just listen and agree then forget about it and some of them it just goes in one ear and straight out the other.

Would be great to ban people for certain reasons BUT they will always find a way to be just like they've always been unfortunately.

A lot of people might turn a blind eye to helping out with something because they know nothing will ever change or get better.

4) I feel they need to maybe be trained to a higher standard, possibly having officers who are specialized in certain animals, would help too.

5) I think it would be a good idea if local RSPCA centers run a monthly or bi-monthly clinic, where low-income of owners n benefits can visit to have their pets treated for free or a small donation./quote][/color]

The staff at my local RSPCA Rescue Centre are always on courses and some specialise in certain animals.

Also they run a clinic twice a week and have a vet come in on Tuesdays to look at all the animals they have that are wanting homes.

I am so saddened that ALL RSPCAs are associated with the bad ones.

Liz, can I ask, what was the view of the vet who actually put the kittens to sleep?

My own personal experience of the RSPCA hasn't been very positive.

I have heard so many stories about the RSPCA and it is a shame that the independents who run under them and do a wonderful job get tarred with the same brush  :(
Just Glad that we have the SSPCA up here, haven't heard a bad story about them
anyway, the 3 times I have contacted them, they have came out within the hour and Helped straight away  :)

1) Simply no - there are more worthy organizations out there that I respect

2) I contacted them about a stray dog that was roaming, she was a staffy & i was worried someone may catch her and use her for the obv.  It took the RSPCA 5 days to send out an inspector and even then they refused to catch the dog without the aid of the police.  A neighbor took over, called her in with food and put the dog in the back of the van for them.

3) They don't investigate fully.  I reported a garden/pet center as their puppies they were selling looked docile and drugged.  They didn't bother going in to check, they called the manager of the shop, asked questions and left it at that.  These puppies were obv not healthy.

4) I understand that the RSPCA are very busy but over the past few years, they seem to be lacking professionalism in their job.  I say this in relations to Q 3, it's not the first or the last time that has happened.  I feel they need to maybe be trained to a higher standard, possibly having officers who are specialized in certain animals, would help too.

5) I think it would be a good idea if local RSPCA centers run a monthly or bi-monthly clinic, where low-income of owners n benefits can visit to have their pets treated for free or a small donation.  I also feel that running educational classes on pet training would be essential in areas.  Showing kids how to train their dog, how to look after animals, what to do if they found a stray etc.

6) Purebreds are placed on a register, even a professional breeder can lack the right accommodation for keeping their animals.  But a breeder who breeds for money will rarely socialize an animal and this is where a problem lays.  I think there should be a regulation where if you want to breed your animal, then you need to get the go ahead from a vet.  Cats and dogs have health check screenings before a responsible breeder breeds, I think a rule such as this should be made legal.  That way if someone is selling kittens on a site such as gumtree, if the RSPCA kept an eye on the site and could contact the said seller, if they had the correct paper work, then all is good.  If they do not, then the animals should be confiscated and the 'breeder' to be banned from keeping pets for x amount of years.

I know this sounds harsh but if it helps cut down kittens/puppies from being dumped at a shelter, then every little bit is good.

Why was the mum and babes put to sleep – what was wrong with them ?

Why is it considered that the problem is worse now than in previous years ?

Hi all,
Thanks for your replies. I am currently working on 4 things in particular, but will need help implementing some and ideas, too. I do not lack in determination - having to do what I did on Tuesday has spurred me on even more and I haven't stopped working on things since, but I am only one person, so once I get the ideas and plans etc in place, I'll post for people opinions and any help I can get.
Also, I'm running an auction on eBay for cat prints and have produced some wall/desk calendars with all proceeds going to a fund for neutering and chip feral, stray and unwanted cats. All this can be seen on my Facebook page, Marley & Co.
Thanks again for opinions - my head is spinning, but I still have not been able to let go of Tuesday, and those kittens faces are ingrained in my mind...
Thanks again,
Liz

I don't believe any animal should be pts unless they're fatally ill and suffering. I certainly hate all this talk of culling. As far as feral cats are concerned, they just need TNR, after that the cats often live very healthy, if short, lives. They help to keep down urban and rural rats, and manage to look after themselves. If you could ask one of them "would you rather be killed, or live a life of ten years as a feral" they would certainly choose to live.

As an organisation, I dislike the RSPCA, but my personal dealings with them have been positive. When I did my first feral rescue (trap, neuter, rehome) of a colony of eight, five of whom were small kittens, just weaned; someone called the RSPCA reporting that there was a large number of cats in the house and no evidence of anyone living here (I don't use the front room). When the inspector came round, she saw the ferals, saw that they were healthy and playful and being well cared for, and she gave me masses of food plus neutering vouchers covering the full cost. They were only just old enough to have done. (I found homes for 6 of the kitties and kept two of the older ones).

I don't like breeding of any sort, whether moggie or pedigree. Any deliberate breeding should be frowned on in the way that drink-driving is. Neglecting neutering should also be stigmatised.

Teresa, I winced at this comment:
Quote
I fight for every little life BUT you need to ask yourselves How much worse would the problem be if every animal was allowed to  live
as I don't believe we have the right not to allow them to live. Who the  :censored:  do humans think they are?

Strangely, the feral population around me has diminished in the last couple of years; it used to be a major problem. This may be related to the falling number of students who live locally.

I read the story on Marley and Co FB; I hope we're not becoming like the US where a feral cat is pts just for being feral. Young kittens such as those who were sadly pts tame easily.
Cats were once gods; they have never forgotten this, nor have the people they own.

Liz,

I can totally understand how stressful this is for you.  People that genuinely care are the ones making the tough choices every day; whether it's working in a practice and having to see healthy animals put to sleep or the rescues having to say "No, sorry. We don't have any more room" and not knowing what will happen to the animals.

I've shared this link on a Pets for Sale page and the local newspapers page urging people to think about their actions, and asking the paper to write an article about the importance of neutering and spaying. I hope it at least gets through to some people.

The USPCA are even worse! A few years ago I rang them over a dog that was in an abandoned house that had every window put in,they told me flatly they would not come out & it would be better if I called the RUC to come out.The house was lived in by a couple alkies who'd gone away/been evicted..
Later on I reported a car with a dog inside & the windows closed,on a scorching hot day, again they didn't want to know.
I cancelled my direct debit donation to them that night.

it is unpalatable but true unfortunately, even if responsible ownership involved have 100 cats each we would never home and care for all of the cats out there (aside from dogs, rabbits, hamsters etc) who are unwanted

The problem is that the cat population has got out of hand. It's a matter of how we deal with it - neuter or cull...

Ok my honest opinion  = BOTH and please dont anyone dare interpret that as what I want,it has sadly become what is the only answer.

Sadly, Teresa my partner and I had a discussion recently and he agreed with that statement. (I didn't, but could totally understand where he was coming from.) The rising number in cats being left to fend for themselves, possibly getting ill and then passing away in pain somewhere is what prompted him to hold that opinion. It saddens me that we have to discuss things like culling and neutering and spaying as 12 weeks because people won't take responsibility for a species that our species imported and domesticated.

RE: My opinion on the RSPCA. It's not favorable.....Our local RSPCA has never made a difference of any merit with animals we're concerned about, and all their adverts are asking for donations. There are never any adverts promoting responsible ownership regarding neutering and spaying, or generally raising awareness about what's causing the influx of animals that ALL rescues are having to deal with.

It is a terribly upsetting situation, and I feel for you Liz having to be witness to such things. Unfortunately it is a reality that not all animals can be rescued or rehomed......

I dont have any opinion on the RSPCA, but obviously much more needs to be done regarding education and think Marys point regarding putting the message on cat food etc is an excellent idea. My OH is a (relatively!) intelligent human being, but was of the thinking that it was a good idea to let cats/ dogs have a litter of kittens/ puppies.

As far as compulsory microchipping goes, in theory a good idea, but it might mean more abandoned kitties as people wouldn't always be prepared to pay for it to be done?

Im not a fan of the RSPCA , each time ive called them about an animal that needs help..they have given none. i met a couple on holiday, the poor lads cat had been killed by the next doors pitbull type dog and by the time they eventually came out after many calls and police being involved ..the dog had been hidden and the cat was dead and they said that was all they could do. so now there is a dog out there free to attack , stupid lying owners of the dog getting away with it  and a poor young couple trying to come to terms with what has happened >:(
i know the animal centres do what they can but the culling of animals makes you wonder why they call themself a rescue, i think its the volunteers who deserve the praise at that organisation  :(

If you're a member of an animal rights facebook page then you might expect something like that to be shown on there but as a local cat rescue it would be the last thing I would expect to see and I'd be quite distressed by it  :shy:

now i love a debate!
Does that mean that a local cat rescue should be non-political (I don't think thats the right term!) ?

My head tells me to concern myself purely with the ones we are saving (I keep telling Judith that we can not save all of them) but my heart wants me to try!
The compromise is to save what we can and try to reduce the numbers of the others (by neutering of course) so I think we have to try and push the message.

Sadly the only people that bother to read the message are the ones that agree.

Its nice to see the original post causing such a debate.

I have shared the FB post on our page and one person has told me its disgraceful and left!
I think people should know what is going on and even though it is upsetting just maybe people will be upset enough to DO something!
I am curious to know if anyone thinks I have overstepped boundaries.

I wouldn't be happy to see the pic on there Angie (if I was on FB as an individual), seeing a photo doesn't make it any more real than if I'd read about it and I would be haunted by the image, much like poor Liz is from actually being there  :( If you're a member of an animal rights facebook page then you might expect something like that to be shown on there but as a local cat rescue it would be the last thing I would expect to see and I'd be quite distressed by it  :shy:

I would like to prewarn rescue peeps from inadvertantly bad mouthing this national ...

I'm not sure that anyone is at this stage. The problem is that the cat population has got out of hand. It's a matter of how we deal with it - neuter or cull...
