Ah right - mind you, I can have my door wide open in the summer, it is only the last few hours of the evening that I miss.

Yeah I know its probably in my head that it doesnt seem to let enough air in. Its when its hot that I really miss the balcony as that was totally netted in and I had the door open most of the time although I couldnt let it when I wasnt there as Amber climbed the netting lol.

Tab - with double glazed windows, you do get air in through the locking setting - it is there for ventilation, just doesn't feel like it at times. All my windows are on that, and when it has got a bit cold, I have had to go and shut them, so they do work!!

Just checked out the cataire site and they are fab. Really reasonable prices as well to I thought. Im having a bit of a nightmare with my lot at the moment as they've sussed out how to get out of my sitting room windows and into the garden , in fact Daisy has just had a moan about it on their own chat page lol.

I love the windows wide open in the summer and if thats the solution then im gonna have to bend Garrys ear about them lol.

The problem I have is that with it being a council flat Im not allowed to 'deface' the property. We have double glazed units (upvc?) so I cant drill into them and I cant stick velcro on. Also as they open outward from the bottom its a pain. The first gap is about 1/4 inch so no air comes in the next one is about 4 inches so a cat could fall out (and Amber has tried!) I have nets up which seem to confuse her but I cant leave the room with the windows open

Oops forgot I was on this too!!  Sorry Tan.

Anyway, mesh for the inside will work if your windows open outwards.

Should do Tan, not sure how you would get to the opener, but you would just put it closer to the window to stop them getting at the gap.

I used the velco / mesh last summer when the apprentices were young so that we could open the windows. This was only downstairs and we never left them to it unsupervised.
For a fully grown cat I don't think they would hold in place (at least for one Goose's size) and I don't think I would do it as a permanent measure.
If I was going to do something long term, I would make a frame to fit the window, cove it in chicken wire or even the more rigid thicker mesh and use some clips to attach it firmly over the window.
I'm sure you could get someone local to knock you up something cheaper than the firms that are out there.

I need to buy some for my upstairs windows at the back as they are huge windows and guests are always opening them. The can stick a bit and someone could fall out of the window. More importantly, people have a habit of throwing the net over the open window and it can snag - also they leave windows wide open and go out so if it rains, everything gets wet. While its on my mind, I will go to B&Q today!  :evillaugh:

you can buy openers in B&Q for about £12.00 each that allow you to open the window about 2".

That's what I've had to buy, we can't have Cataire screens as we have centrally pivoted old worlde poor people windows.

We had those tilt and turn windows (that are in the post abit further down ) fitted a few years back. Cost alot but Max had escaped a few times already and the heat in the house was unbearable. But they are great, the gap at the top is not big enough for him to escape through now so we can leave all the windows open! Worth considering if you are getting window replacements anyway.

I thought Cataire did do door things actually

I cannot see anything on their literature about doors, but then again what do I know, possibly not a lot.

I thought Cataire did do door things actually, I was looking into it ages ago for my cat room, but would be tricky with the way the door opens in that room.

With the Cataire  you can do it yourself very easy. Full instructions are given. I don't think the Cataire people do anything for doors, however, if you got someone to make you wooden frame, you can purchase the screening material by the metre and fix it viathe  turn button method I would think. In fact thinking about it even me who cannot  push a drawing pin in easily may be able to do it.

is there anything they do for doors as i said my house tends to attract the heat big style i had fans on but nothing beats good old fashioned air
I cant have anything that is permanent through as i just rent this house out

I have the cataire screens and think they are great  ;D

chimpzoo

That link that you posted looks to be the same as the mesh supplied by cataire except the cataire mesh is black instead of grey, at least it was when I ordered them last summer.   Before I got the cataire screens I got samples of the mesh in both back and grey and surprisingly the black is much less obtrusive. If you can find somewhere else that sells the mesh on it's own then I would definitely go for the black.  Cataire sells the mesh on it's own for £5 a metre.

maybe the black looks better as it absorbs all the light alowing you to see outside, white or grey reflect light so you won't be able to - like net curtains. I might have a go at making at frame too

Yes you are right velcro needs to be peeled but the worry about velcro especially in the hot wether ais glue side where you attch it to the screening and window cos it startrs to slip and eventaully comes away.

well, the way velcro works it needs to be peeled, you can't pull a large area at once, my windows are quite high, there's no way a person could even push through 2 meters of velcro.

just like that barfly velcro game http://www.bouncy-castle-inflatables.co.uk/bar-fly-velcro-wall.html

I personally wouldnt trust velcro

I think I would tend to agree, I personally would much rather have one of the screens you can easily fit, they are very secure and you can have your windows wide open.

ok, i have a sash window solution.

i'm going to get 2m of this or something similar if this is too easy to scratch through http://www.tarpaulinsdirect.co.uk/TarpaulinsSite/product/FSMesh.htm

and 4m of this http://www.theessentialscompany.co.uk/Velcro%20Products.html#Velcro%20Tapes

so that will be a total of £10.30 for one large sash window !  ;D

Actually that's a good point. I have sash windows and though Lexy is fine, she's not one to want to go near the windows since she can't reach them, I know Estella will be gone through one of them if I dare to leave it open.

Thanks for the link Ela, I think it may be something I invest in for the summer. God knows we won't be moving before then now anyway so may add a nice selling feature to the house when it comes time to market it again.

This is the one thing that I've never quite gotten, windows with no screens....

That site is great but looking at it, you could probably build them for the same price and velcro them in place.

I was going to use for a quick fix some of that needle point mesh (the stuff kids make bookmarks out of), it's plastic and pretty flimsy but I figured it might confuse our cats long enough for them to leave it ;)
