my poor wee jonesy had a seizure this morning, its probably because she wasnt getting enough of her medication as the collar was putting her off her food and she had been sick for two days as well, hoping she will be okay now that she has her appetite back, thankfully no problems with her asthma just now!

Tachi hated having a coller on after his lump op. I felt so sorry for him.

With the boys you and they should be fine, they will be a little sore, and they may well lose that "chavvy" swagger they seem to develop just before they are neutered! Good luck with the ops.

I always send in a "Buster"type or cone collar with my females, and when they come home I swap it one of these:-

I notice they also do a Pro-collar which looks a little more sturdy than the green one I use, but I find they are tough enough for cat use.

You may also like to look at the new wound dressing/lick deterrent for other types of wounds.

At the moment my German shepherd dog is wearing a huge Buster collar, because the only other time in her life she needed one was when she was spayed, but now I wish I had a bigger comfi or pro collar.

I believe that wounds heal inside out so hopefully the inside has repaired itself

The skin should hold, its been a few days.
Keep an eye on her but the fact she has got the stitches out she might leave it alone now (after a few licks of course hehe)

well she managed to get the collar off again and has removed all of her stitches, fortunately the wound seems to be holding together and its not looking infected so im gonna wait and see how it looks before i phone the vet, dont think theres any point trying to get it back on now that theres no stitches to pull out, but she might lick at the wound too much and open it up...

Never used a collar either .....although I remember 2 of mine did actually remove their stitches ....saved the vet doing it

I have never used the cone on my females, tried but they just didn't like it- it was the same kinda effect as putting a harness on them.

I just watched them and if they tried to get at the stiches, I would move their heads

unfortunately i had to put the collar back on as she started ripping out all her stitches and i was afraid her wound would open up, so will have to try and keep it on for a couple of days, shame cos she dont look very happy

glad to say jonesy is feeling much better today without that collar on her neck, and hasnt been pulling at her stitches so i wont be forcing it back on her, i think she was more bothered by wearing that than she was about having the wound..

PB your ferals would have been glued up tho wouldnt they?

Magoo had a collar and vicryl stitches for 14 days when he had his ears done, they all dissolved bang on time and he had no access them.
In some cases a collar is needed for stitches whether they are vicryl or not, as pulling at them will do the same damage regardless of material

I can't understand why they would use them on a cat with dissolvable stitches, the stitches will stay in longer if they can't lick them - but they dont always dissolve, Pebbles had to have hers removed when they were still there 2 weeks later. I do use cones for the first three days on cats just in case they do pull them out, but after that i let them get on with it.

I would take it off and see how she gets on without it. Not all cats worry at their wounds so she may not actually need it. If she does need it, then I would still take it off for some time each day, eg when she's eating, to give her a break.

I've never had a female cat so none of mine have ever had to wear one of these. Mosi did have abdominal surgery a few years ago and the vet said that if he worried at the wound he would have to wear a cone, but he didn't bother. He licked around the area to clean it but he didn't bother with the wound itself.

Have to admit I've always taken the cone off once home. Stops them walking into things, they can't climb the stairs with one on and of my limited experience of having 7 cats spayed or nutered not one of them has been bothered by the stiches.

Like Pinkbear I have had an awful lot of ferals speyed and never tried the collar - we always had them glued and internal dissolving stitches - still had the same done with my nicer ones to as they would never live it down here at the Clan!!!!!

I also take some of mine to the vets in crush cages for normal injections having spent an hour chasing them to go in the crusher!!!!

Most of my kids are the nasty feral sort - and we think its perfectly normal

What about nasty, spitty ferals then? I've had 100s neutered with no problems at all and not one vet was looney enough to suggest putting a collar on a feral. Do domestics heal differently then?

As the others will tell you, my thoughts on those cone things are well known.

But if she pulls it off again, please don't force it back on her unless you actually see her bothering the wound site. Right now she hates everyone who comes near and no need to add Mummy to that list unless there's a problem.

thanks for all the advice, well she has already managed to get it off and she put up a big fight when i put it back on, so i wont be able to take it on and off when she is eating, i have raised her bowl and she is reaching it better now, as for vet bills thats not an issue as i go to a charity vet, PDSA, and they provide free treatment and meds as i am on a low income, and they have put in dissolving stitches as shes not a very good patient and the vet didnt fancy having to remove her stitches! (they had to put her in a crush cage today to get the needle in her arm) i think i will remove it after seven days and see how it goes..

Dont cut it, it wont help.
You can remove it and it will go back on easily unless you have a really feisty cat.
It is easier for a cat to eat off a flat plate if you really cannot remove collar.
10 days is way beyond the norm unless the cat has already eaten stitches and been stapled. Try her without during vets opening hours and if she doesnt chew her stitches leave collar off, if she does eat stitches at least you wont have to pay emergency hours call out.
You may need to remove hood from litter tray.
It is normal for cats to show such discomfort so dont despair too much.

Did your vet say she was nibbling or do they routinely put a cone on to add a few ££'s on the bill? The first few days are most important, i would leave it on til mon (to avoid any weekend problems) and then try her without it, supervised of course

she will wash the area but aslong as its not concentrated attention she should be ok.
Dont cut the collar as its hard to keep them smooth and it will also make it possible for her to reach her flank.
She will get over it, try feeding on a saucer or hold the dish up for her to eat

Why vets cant glue them i dont know, saves all this palava
