Title: home safe and sound (was: ... Smidgen is now officially missing)
Post by: blackcat on October 08, 2007, 13:34:18 PM
 Esther has been outside and caught a mouse. She has it in her Ikea cat tent so it can not get out over the rim without her seeing it go ... Every now and then she lets it out and Shadow is terribly excited by this new game (if a little afraid of the mouse when it scampers over him. Have no chance of rescuing the poor thing as there is so much stuff still stacked around the living room that it can hide anywhere. Hope it finds the back door soon ...

Smidgen is nowhere to be seen (I suspect he is inspecting the empty house next door which is open at present due to workers in the place) so hopefully he will get hungry and come home soon, but preferable after the mouse has made its escape ...

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww  :'(

All you had to do was remove the cats and put a box on its side with a piece of cheese in and it would have just walked into the box and been safe.

Gill, my very small lounge room has a stack of 26 cartons of books in one corner, a large settee on each of two sides, a cat climbing tower, two heaters an overexcited large dog and a cat in hunter mode in it. Where would you suggest I intervene ... ?

Sorry, but it was short and relatively painless (at least it did not protest) and the mouse suffered no more than was necessary - Esther is a very swift huntress. It is the price you pay for having predators for pets.

Smidgen, on the other hand, appears to have run away from home. I am begining to wonder if I should fret. Today was his first big day out unsupervised (in the sense I was checking on him at intervals but he has now disappeared so that is a little tricky. Should I fret, or should I assume that now the workmen have gone home for the day he will emerge from whatever patch of nettles he has been lurking under and will come home again??? :scared:

I would go out and look for Smidgon and I would be worried, could the workmen have shut him in somewhere unknowingly, or is there maybe places he can hide within the works and get trapped?
Title: Re: new use for Ikea cat tent ...
Post by: blackcat on October 08, 2007, 16:24:33 PM
no. worst case scenario they have locked him indoors but I did ask them to check before they closed up for the night. If they have I would see him at the window. They are just handyman doing a bit of a tidyup before the new tenants arrive, so not doing any major work that might hurt little kitties but it is definitely noisy so could have scared him. I have been out the back footpath with the dog who has shown no interest (and he is good at finding things I ask him to look for) and I have wandered around the street a bit but no sign of him. He could, of course, be in the next street over so I will go have a look there also. I have left the kitchen window open so he can get in if he comes back while we are gone. If he is not back by dinner time I will get seriously worried. He is such a confident wee man that he could have wandered into anyones home and goodness knows what reception he would have been given... :'(

Oh dear I do hope he comes home soon.

I wonder if they had any floorboards up, are the workmen back tomorrow, cos if he is not back by then I would definately insist on searching for him.
Title: Re: new use for Ikea cat tent ...

Not in the house next door. the one over the back fence and several doors down is having major work done. I have spoken to the workmen whose grasp on English is seriously limited. Will take pix to work tomorrow for printing and distributing to local workmen and kiddies if he doesn't turn up tonight. He has a voice on him so if he is stuck somewhere and he wants out it will be easy to find him. The handyman doing the house next door is, is suspect, also living there judging by the odd noise at night. He did take a strong interest in Smidgen so he will keep an eye out for me if he is not home tonight (assuming he has not cat-napped him).

Damn, I knew I shouldn't let him out till he was chipped... and he is hard to describe to people cos if you say tabby they think stripes, if you say ticked they have no idea what you are talking about.... photos are a must if I have to do a door to door tomorrow...

will start a new thread if he is not home by dark.

she's actually getting very worried. I have phoned the vets (all of them) and the good news is he has not been handed in. I have walked the streets within a reasonable travelling distance for a young boy out on his first big adventure and no sign. I have beaten my way through the nettles and brambles along the rear paths, and have called at front and back, as well as peering into all my neighbours gardens. I can not believe he could disappear to comprehensively on his first big day out. I deliberately did not feed him before he went out, so he would have an incentive to come back, and the only thing I did wrong was shut the back door absentmindedly for about half an hour. Up until then he was checking in regularly and all was well. I was discussing him with the men next door and they were very taken with him, but in a nice way, though one did warn me he could get stolen because he is so attractive and friendly. Esther does not seem in the least bit perturbed, and, as she has adopted him as her kitten I am foolishly hoping this means he is OK ... I have downloaded some lovely photos of him and will make up a poster for him tomorrow at work. There doesn't seem anything else I can do tonight. I would feel silly knocking on neighbours' doors when he has only been gone a few hours. If he is still missing tomorrow I will have no qualms at all. Oh, and i have stood at the back window and stared into all the neighbours' gardens, but no sign at all of my wee boy... Am changing the name of the thread ...

Dont worry about knocking on doors. We  checked our garage after someone knocked on our door and much to our surprise found a large ginger tom in there. We did not notice that he had crept in. Best of luck, thinking about you.

Wait till after dark then shout for him, Im sure he will come home.  :)

I lost a cat once new to the house, I went all over looking for her, shouted her a million times, after dark when I had kind of given up hope, she came back. She was hiding in the bushes out the back all along.

Hope he returns soon.

Just seen this (with the new title) and hope Smidgen comes sauntering back in soon for his tea, now that it is a little darker.  Have you done another patrol?  Years ago when Blip was temporarily AWOL, I walked round the block calling her name and she miaowed at me to let me know where she was (in a back garden a few doors down the street - I knocked on their door and retrieved her).

Title: Re: ... Smidgen is now officially missing (was: new use for Ikea cat tent)
Post by: blackcat on October 08, 2007, 18:38:04 PM
I have let a few of the 'old guard' know he is missing (those who sit and twitch their nets). So they will spread the word a bit. I think I will work off my anxiety designing the spiffingest lost cat poster ever seen in Chatham... Really worried now as gangs of youths are patrolling the next street over, and goodness knows what they would do to a friendly kitten given half the chance. He is so hard to describe, to non-cat people who do not know about ticked coats, so I have been describing him as being 50:50 white and grey where the grey bits look like a rabbits coat ... here is a photo- tell me how I should describe him ...
Title: Re: ... Smidgen is now officially missing (was: new use for Ikea cat tent)
Post by: Tiggy's Mum on October 08, 2007, 18:44:40 PM
He looks white and brown from that pic, I'd describe the brown as being like a wild rabbit's fur as rabbits in the pet shop can be all sorts of colours.  I'd start following some of Sam's tips straightaway like the hoover bag contents in the garden.  As it was his first outing he is, in effect, new to the area so the smell might help him find his way back.
Title: Re: ... Smidgen is now officially missing (was: new use for Ikea cat tent)
Post by: Susanne (urbantigers) on October 08, 2007, 18:52:29 PM
I'd describe him as brown and white to most people - keep it as simple as possible.

Another of Sam's tips I'd follow is to get people to check their outbuildings while you wait in case he's been shut in - dont take their word that they'll do it later.  Ask them to look while you are there or they will forget.

just his first relatively unsupervised one. He has been out before but under my constant surveillance. This was the first time I left him to his own devices. The dog kennel has Shadow's normal bedding in it, so that may help and Shadow is not, himself, entirely lacking in body odour, so am hoping that the fox smell does not drown that out. I have been out a couple of times more to no avail. The back window is open so if he turns up I can hear him (I am sitting near the front door so ditto). Will tip the contents of the vac over the back fence, just in case...

I know its natural to worry but the 1st time I let Kylie out unsupervised, she was gone 8 hours! - I went out for a couple of hours and expected her back. She her hungry belly brought her back safe & sound in the end.

She will be back soon - don't worry try not to worry yourself silly

He's stunning - but I guess that's not a useful description, sorry. As Mark says try not to worry yourself silly, he's probably just out investigating the area.
Title: Re: ... Smidgen is now officially missing (was: new use for Ikea cat tent)
Post by: blackcat on October 08, 2007, 19:19:21 PM
thanks Mark, I know it is being silly as he has probably just gotten himself cordened off by some local tom or something. At least I know he is not injured somewhere as there is no sign of him on the streets and the vets all have my phone number. I have shut Esther upstairs and have the back door wide open and am hanging around in the kitchen and wandering up into the garden to call at times. Shadow is vigilantly guarding the back fence but he does that anyway to protect me from that nasty fox. It is silly to be getting weepy, but i am anyway. He is such a confident, gorgeous, affectionate and trusting cat. I do so hope someone has just kept him inside after he has strolled in an made himself at home and that they will toss him out when they go to bed (which I suspect is the general standard of cat care around here).

no, and it has started raining so I am guessing if he has shelter he will stay there till it stops. Tonight I will leave the kitchen light on and the back door open (don't panic I can deadlock the rest of the house off from the kitchen), with some bedding and food for him in case he comes home. Shadow will let me know if we have a visitor, and I can go down and investigate. Worst case scenario it will be the fox.

I so hope he is safe somewhere, he is so trusting he would be totally vulnerable to some of the less desirable sorts... At least there are very few dogs in neighbouring yards so he should be safe on that score at least...

Today he was snuggling up to Shadow and leaning on him so that Shadow was looking completely non-plussed and then he purred and purred at his big favourite dog. Sorry, getting a bit maudlin here. Thank heaven there is no alcohol in the house or I would be completely messy by now ...

thanks all for your kind words and moral support. I am going to bed now to try to sleep. I am worried because he is such a personality cat. I have had three such cats in my life and they have all met an untimely end. Reynard was 2 when he was hit by my car as I swung in the drive at dusk. Claudius was only 8 when he died of cancer and now Smidgen is missing so while I know he is probably just out exploring the big world I cannot help feeling very worried. I have attached a picture for you to see what a lovely boy he is...

My boy Cosmo had a couple of late nights when he was first allowed out in April - once coming back covered in what looked like some kind of resin/varnish - he'd obviously got stuck somewhere before coming back.  Try to get some rest 'tho understand it's easier said than done.

Well, he's not here. Now I don't know whether to go to work so I can run off posters, or to stay at home and search for him. Esther came up on the bed last night and made a big fuss of me before settling to sleep beside me. Not sure if she was doing this as she felt sympathy or because she did not have his Smidgenship vying for my attention...

I think I will go to work, but will leave the back window open wide so he can get inside if he comes home. Poor Esther will be confined to the front half of the house. Thank you again for all your kind words. I don't think I could do this without your support.

Sorry to hear that Smidgen is still out; he is probably sheltering from all this rain.

The other time that Blip went AWOL, she was not back home the following morning either, so I went into the office and made up 100 posters.  I came home at lunchtime, distributing posters to a couple of local shops on the way and when I put my key in our front door, there was a loud plaintive miaow from the other side!

I have everything crossed that the same thing happens to you today, BC

thanks again all. I am at work and have had posters printed up. Only 25 as they were a pound each and I need to keep some aside for the reward. He will probably be there when I get home tonight but if he is not I can distribute these to neighbours and have more photocopied tomorrow at work when no-one is watching. I have contacted all the vets, the RSPCA and am trying to call PDSA but their phone seems to be off the hook. We don't appear to have a Celia Hammond here. Anyone in my area who wants a poster, I can email them to you if you PM your address.

It has been suggested that he may have found a girlfriend which I guess is not impossible at five months, especially as he is such a precocious lad, if so I hope he does not get beaten up by more mature males - or catch something nasty...

Fingers crossed he is there when I get home. It is so wet and miserable he may have preferred to stay where he is if he is comfy and warm ...

Oh no he is not home yet... :(
Well, 5 months is still really a kitten... I think there is a big chance that someone found him and took him home and he is under a good care.  Persist with posters and ask around with the neighbours and have the words spread out!!  I am thinking of you and little smidgen.... wishing for a happy reunion very, very soon!!

My thoughts are with you...and I hope he has returned home by now. If not...just keep doing everything you are doing...the more your let people in your area know the better. When you knock on doors show folks a picture of him to help them recognise him and ask them to check locked cars...garages etc.

I lost my cat when he was about 7/8 months old last year and it was through my posters and leaflet distribution that he came home safe to me a week later so there is hope. A lady had taken him home the night he went missing,  and was told about my leaflets from more than one person which led to her phoning me and getting him home. Throughout my week of panic and no sleep he had been safe, fed, and well looked after! I can't empahsis enought the importance of getting the word out in your area as much as possble. There are a lot of good and friendly people out there who want to help!

Good luck...and positive thinking.....

finally staggered in the door at 6 tonight and opened the back door to find a very wet dog, and a very dry Smidgen. Guess who decided there was no room in the kennel for two :Luv: He rushed straight over to the food bowl and vacuumed down the two morsels of food left from Esther's breakfast and is now happily exploring the contents of the groceries that have just arrived as I was downloading photographic evidence of his return... So here he is - the wanderer returned. Thank you all so much for your sympathy and support over the last couple of days. I would not have held together had it not been for all your help. And Mark I think I owe you a payout - I did waste £30 on the flyers

I'd have thought that a cat wouldn't have wanted to do anything like that until after six months too, but Ember was spayed about a fortnight ago because she was calling....at four months! :-: (The woman who put her on Freecycle must've got her age wrong. I thought she looked younger than she said when they brought her round to my house.  >:()

Regardless of that, I'm glad he's home safe, well and generally unscathed. :)

Must have been such a scary couple of days. I have let Heidi and Huxley out a couple of times now into back garden with me and part of me wants to let them enjoy the fun of outside but other part is dreading it.

Only just caught up with this thread... Soooo glad Smidgen came home safe and sound!  ;D  Best to get him chipped 'n chopped before he goes on the rampage again, eh?

I've learned, over some very worrying times, that some kitties go a-wandering and that there's no need to worry every time they go walkabout.  Can't help it a bit though.  I have now discovered that Sabby, who disappears from time to time, actually spends a large amount of that time in a nearby field, chasing things, and totally ignoring my calls!  Little tike!   :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

well, i snuggled into bed last night, (after being trounced in the quiz lol) and the dog was on one side of the bed and Smidgen dived straight down under the duvet, curled round once, and went straight to sleep. He was bright as a button this morning. On closer examination he does appear to have had a fight (there is a scratch down his back) but no lasting harm. He looked quite smug, if a little fazed, that's all. Sooooooooo glad he's home :Luv: :Luv: but he is now booked at the vets and will not be going out until after his operation ... :evillaugh:
