Im beside myself, I dont know what to do, I cant loose him  :'(

He recently had a jab, the same as the last one, and its not worked at all. His throat is totally closed over and the vet said it looks very agressive  :(

How long does it take for the biop result to come back?

Even though I know he cant go on like this forever, I still cant bear the thought of loosing my boy. He's not even 5 yet and has had such a hard life.  :(

So its possible this is his last week  :'( If he does have it then I cant let him suffer.

I dont think the vet is wrong, its the only vet I deal with with Ollie and he has seen him going through the stages, he knows something is seriously wrong this time.

I have other things going on atm and Im not strong enough for this right now, I dont think I ever will be.

Ollie's card has been marked since day one  :(

One very big prayer being said before I go to bed tonight.  :Luv2:

We all know one day we will have to say goodbye to our little furry loved ones BUT it never makes it any easier.  All we can ever do is give them lots of love and care and the best time of their life while they are with us.

Whatever the outcome we are all here for you and Ollie knows you are there for him.

Its not good news  :(

Vets has just phoned and said its all down the back of this throat, and deeply embedded. He asked if I would want him put to sleep while he's out I havent even seen him this morning.

He said even if it turns out thats its benign, they would not feel happy operating on it as its that deep into the tissue.

So I have asked them to carry on with the biop I need time to get my head round this.

Am I being slefish?

Im totally gutted  :(
Title: Re: Prayers needed for Ollie.

OMG CC - what does it mean if it is benign - would he still need to be pts because its blocking his throat??

Oh Cheryl,

I am so sorry to read this...the worst possible news.  Poor, poor little Ollie.  Please God that he hasn't suffered too much during all this... cats mask their illnesses so well, bless them.

But no, I don't think you are being selfish Cheryl.  I'm not familiar with Ollie's story but from what I can glean by reading some of your comments, he was leading a very sad and miserable life and you saved him from that and gave him a home filled with love and comfort and care.  It is just so tragic that he hasn't had very much time to enjoy it.  Unfortunately, this is all too often the case with the little strays.  I don't know whether you can remember the story of Little Black Bob?  After collecting him from that hell-hole in Cumbria (three years ago today) I was absolutely devastated to discover that the results of the many tests I had carried out on him at the vet hospital,  pointed to FIP and I was advised to have him euthanased straight away.  I couldn't get over it because he had suffered the worst possible life for such a long time and I wanted to make it all up to him.....he was such a little sweetheart and although I only knew him for a few days, he will live in my heart forever.  I am thinking this is how you are feeling about Ollie.

I have often regretted having Bob pts there and then as the vet advised but at the time I was too upset to think of anything else and signed the papers to allow it.  I have to say Cheryl, I have regretted it ever since.  I would have loved one more night with the little guy.... However, if Ollie is suffering and is in extreme pain or discomfort I don't know what I should advise.  But I don't think you're being selfish at all.

Ask the vet whether he is in a lot of pain and make your decision accordingly.

I have often cried for hours at a time over Bob.  But last year after one such occasion, I prayed to be given a sign to let me know that he was okay and that very evening 'Twinks' turned up.  We didn't find her until the following night but while I was dead-heading the flowers in the front garden I could hear a cat crying somewhere but couldn't identify where the noise was coming from..The next day I could hear it again and it was only when my husband went to fetch something from his car at 1.30 in the morning that he heard it too and realised that it was coming from the engine of my van!  Fearing the worst, we rushed out with the keys and a torch and Steve set about opening the van up when this tiny, tiny black kitten appeared.  She could not have been more than four weeks old and thankfully was unscathed but the amazing part of this story is that she was, and is, the image of Little Black Bob.  And nobody had ever seen her before, nobody ever claimed her and nobody had reported a missing kitten. Was this my 'sign'?  I like to think so.

All you can do Cheryl is what you have always done for Ollie.  Just love him and you will know what you have to do...

He belonged to no-one before you gave him a home but now he belongs to you and because of that he will always belong to you and will stay with you forever....it was meant to be.  I am certain that we will be re-united with our beloved pets again one day and when that day comes, we will never more be parted.

Think how dreadfully poor Ollie would have suffered if you hadn't taken him in when you did.  Nobody would have noticed how ill he was and he would have died in agonizing pain.  It is just too sad and I am so, so sorry.

Take care hun

Lots of love and special prayers for you both at this sad time

Really it's a good decision because you are saving Ollie from being in pain.

Well Ollie is just...Ollie really. He's not showing any signs of anything major, he's eating, walking about as usual, gave Macey a big headbutt when he saw her. I would say in body and mind he's not at the pts stage yet (I dont think, thats also what makes it so hard). Although I know its going to be the outcome of the biopsy that could possibly change that.

I hope its a good outcome and he doesn't have cancer, maybe there would be drugs to shrink the growth? Anyone know of anything like that?

There is for humans so there must be something for animals.  :wish:

He's sat here on his cat mat, per usual  :)

Am sorry to hear this CC .  It doesn't sound like you're being at all selfish as he sounds ok in himself at the moment, and if you do need to make the difficult decision then you have some time to spend with him.  You've fought so hard for him.

Let's hope there is something that can be done, your vet sounds as if they will be a good guide.

if ollie is his normal self and having a good quality of life the result of the biopsy isnt gonna change that cos ollie doesnt know. its only you that will know and have such a war with your feelings. so until ollies life changes so he is no longer himself, you just know that you maybe have less time with him than you hoped. this gives you time to spend as much time making ollie feel good and happy.

I hope that ollie has lots and lots of time with you but you just take every day one by one and even if the biopsy is not a good result , you then count every extra day with Ollie as a fabulous bonus and so many times cats have proved the vets to be wrong cos a few weeks can be a few months and a few months can be a few years
Title: Re: Prayers needed for Ollie.

Thats the problem tho, with the vet already suggesting pts I dont know if they will carry on treating him. If they think that would they agree with me keeping him comfortable as he is still himself, although they dont see that. All they see is an ill cat.

I really hope its not cancer and something can be done for him.

I know the vet can see whats happening on the inside but I too would hold on til at least the biopsy result as there is just so much life in him!  :Luv:

Regarding shrinking the growth, Schui had a growth down the back of his nose, possibly malignant and that is why he had nasal problems all the time, couldn't smell and and kept stopping eating.  He was on long acting steroids all the time we had him firstly for his terrible mouth problems (which improved when all his teeth were removed) and then to try and reduce this growth - until they stopped working.

I hope there is something that can be done for that dear boy but from what you and Baz's mum say he sounds to be a happy little chappy right now so I would go with the fact that he doesn't sound in discomfort right now xx

CC only you can make the decision - if Ollie is happy in himself and living a good life, then it seems premature to consider euthanasia at this point, even if it is only the medication that keeps him that way. I have only had one cat with cancer, and by the time the vet made his diagnosis he was already in the final stages of liver failure and it had metastasized throughout his body. The decision was easy as he clearly had no future and was unhappy in himself. With Ollie that is not the case, and I would suggest you celebrate his life as long as he is continuing to enjoy it, which he clearly is. Tell the vet to go to  :censored: and find another one if they keep leaning on you to PTS ...
Title: Re: Prayers needed for Ollie.
Post by: CC & The Pussycat Guys & Dolls on April 25, 2009, 11:21:52 AM
Well it goes like this..... Ollie has had a jab about 4 weeks ago to stop the swelling on his throat, his throat was totally closed over. It did work and brought the swelling down- Ollie was fine for about a week. Then back to the vets for another jab of the same-  I took him back 10 days later and the jab hadnt worked, this is when my vet said his suspicions. Then rushed in for the biopsy. It was the vets at the other branch who says pts now!

Im going to the vets today so they can check him over.

OH OH OH AND............................................... Last night a major break through with Ollie... He enjoyed his first tummy rub in his life  ;D No claws or anything, not even once  ;D So that was fab for us both  :Luv2:

Im going to bath him so he looks a little better for the vet  :)

Hi cc,

I'm so pleased to read that Ollie is continuing to enjoy his life and doesn't for the moment appear to be in discomfort.  Does Ollie let you bathe him?  He sounds a perfect little poppet.

When you say that his throat is totally 'closed over' doesn't that affect him swallowing his food?  When an animal is still interested in its food, I always think it is a good sign.

Good luck at the vets.   All fingers and paws crossed this end for the little babe. :luck: :get well 3:

Lots of love

Hiya Roz, no Ollie has never been bathed in his life, first time today and he was a good boy  ;D but silly me didnt think of him grooming himself after so he's going to be sticky again

Yes Roz it does affect him swallowing, but the jabs were taking the swelling down, not anymore tho so I have to mush his food which is no bother really. He's never gone off his food really.

Im going to stay possitive untill I get the results back and go from there, its all I can do  :shy:

Hi again cc,

You may already have seen this site but I just found it and wondered if some of the info (re Oral inflammatory disorders) might help you to think about what else might be going on with little Ollie.  It is quite comprehensive and might at least give you something to fire at the vet.

Here is the link:   http://www.vetinfo.com/cteeth.html  (it is the fourth question on the page - I think)

Poor little Ollie - I hope he stays happy...bless him.

Lots of love to you both

Fingers crossed for good biopsy results, and if you dont feel he is ready, then dont let them push you, it is hard, as vets look at the clinical side, but they arent the ones living with them and seeing their quality of life. Good luck

Would I be able to get the vets to phone for the biop results? Cos if its not cancer and something can be done for him, it needs to be done quick!

He has the signs but Im in denial, obviously  :shy:

I feel like I owe this to him, anything that can be done to help I will do, even if it means going to a specialist. Money means nothing to me right now as far as Ollies conserned  :Luv2:

 :thanks:

Well I would phone the vets tomorrow and even if the results are not done, I would push them to push the lab, my vet is very nice and understands what Ive been through with Ollie, he's the only vet I bother with for Ollie.

Humm I think Ollie is starting to slow down, he's loosing weight (I think) because of not being able to eat much. He is not making any sound at all, just resting  :( but he is still there at meal times wanting to be fed, maybe I should syringe feed him? I have been mushing his food and putting water in it.

Even if the vet can give him something to take the swelling down till the results come back would be good, and maybe a pain killer too. The vets didnt even mention about his steriods, wether to carry on with them or not, maybe I should?

Were going to the vets today to get something to take the swelling down and a pain killer. I dont think he will need an apetite booster as he wants to eat, he's just finding it painful  :(

I really hope its not cancer and something can be done, Im going out of my mind here and the poor wee man doesn't deserve this  :(

Well seen a different vet today, and he also said it doesn't look hopefull  :'(

But he said he understands me wanting to wait for the results. So its just an option of waiting now and see what comes of it  :scared:

He give Ollie a long lasting steriod jab to try to take the swelling down, havent looked in his mouth to see if its done anything yet, will look in a while. Also an antibiotic and a vitimin B jab.

He said he still looks quite brite, I said thats whats making it so hard  :(

So its just going to be sit and wait till Friday, and then I will also have to pay the bill which is more than I thought, its at £152 at the moment but I dont really care you cant put a price on life  :shy:

Im going to get my others insured also now just incase  :)

Well as soon as we were home Ollie was hungy and give me a little meow  ;D I couldnt believe my ears  :Luv:

He seems ok at the moment, just resting on my sons bed not hiding out of the way, so hopefully he feels a little better at least.  :)

Aw CC....Wish things were'nt this way for you and darling Ollie.... :(

You have to turn things positive in the sense that you have been given precious time with Ollie, had Ollie not found you when he was but a kitten I doubt very much he would of made it out of kitten-hood.  :Luv:

You have given him the best of a life he could possibly have under his circumstance's, the wee man has fought so long and you have helped him every stage of the way...

I was so dreading looking at Ollie's thread this morning but relieved to learn that he is still with you...bless him.

All you can do is love him as you have always done and as the vet said, cherish every moment you have left with the little star.

I shall continue to pray for him.

I feel so ignorant not knowing Ollie's full history.  I know I was confusing him with your other cat Oliver when I first posted my thoughts but if you feel you have the strength and time, I would be interested to learn more about the dear little chap.  It must be heartbreaking to have found a kitten at such a young age and to have nurtured it against the odds for so long, only to lose it in young adulthood.  I am just so sorry cc and wish I could take the pain away for you. :(

But at the moment he's still with you and there's always a chance that the results might not be as grim as everyone is suggesting. Maybe if we all try to visualise a well and happy Ollie at a certain time this evening, we might be able to improve things.  We just have to link our thoughts and think him well and healthy..not sick and sad. Shall we set a time for 8pm?  It would be better if I knew what little Ollle looks like.  Anything is worth a shot.

Lots of love to you and Ollie :Luv:

Roz

I'm modifying this....is Ollie the little babe on your avatar?

He was diagnosed with Gingivitis at the age of six months old, and has fought on till now bless him. I got him when he was only 4 weeks old, not even weened I had to ween him myself, I did not know he was only this young when I got him it was a vets trip that gave me the inormation. So from being 6 months old he's had this and sadly had to learn to live with it. I feel I have done my best for him in tearms of vet treatment, he's been to the vets at least once a month since he was 6 months old also. This has been a strain on both of us but I will do anything for him  :Luv:

He had his teath removed in Jan last year and this did improve his condition, leaving him well for 10 months, he didnt need any antibiotics through this time. Around October last year things started again and just after Christmas he started getting the infections again. The last few weeks treatment has not been working for him in terms of taking the swelling down. Last Thursday my vets told me his suspicions and said he thinks Ollie has cancer  :'(

Its all been a great shock to the system  :shy: We have traveled so far together Im not going to give up on him now. I will always be there for him wether its rain or shine  :Luv:

My Sunshine Ollie  :Luv2:

Im also getting mixed feelings about him as he was on the kitchen top wanting ham, then ate a full plate, leaving none for his brother Ted who was watching close by  :evillaugh:

He's been better today, like his normal self, he is still managing to climb to the top of their 6ft cat post.  :) He's having a snooze on my bed with Ted, not hiding out of the way which is a good thing  :Luv2:

I also mentioned to the vet that he is still eating and grooming, which is not a sign of a cat giving up, the vet agreed  :)

If there is going to be a time in my life that I need a miracle, its now. I would give up my future good things for him to get better now.

Oh bless that sweet little babe.  He looks so lovely. It's so unfair that this has to happen to the little guy after all he has been through.  I understand now why you say that 'his card was marked from day one'....poor little Ollie.

You couldn't have done more than you have cc.  As I said in my message to you I shall never understand pain and suffering and it always seems to afflict the least deserving.  It is sad beyond words.

I can only hope and pray that the results are not as grim as you have been given to expect.

All my thoughts are with you both

Hi bonnielass,

I started to type my message some time ago but had a long phone call in between so didn't see your response to my earlier post but yes, let's all try to imagine a completely well and healthy Ollie wth no nasty infection or anything else more sinister and pray for his recovery.  I shall be doing that at 8pm so if anyone else wants to join me in focussing their thoughts on that as well, then we can but try.  I think when the chips are down, everything is worth a punt.  I think it is important that we all link together at a given time so that our thoughts/prayers are more powerful.

Thanks hun.

The day is drawing closer  :scared:

Ollie has been well today, I even think that green salava has gone. I think it was an infection causing the green drool.

He has been meowing more, for food of course  :shy: and also opening his mouth wide to eat  ;D He has also dived into the shopping bags of cat food , which he does every cat food day  :)

We have been having some lovely cuddles  :) I lay down with him yesterday afternoon and he was doing what he used to do when he was a kitten...putting his paws on my eyes when I closed them, thinking where have your eyes gone most likely  :evillaugh:

He also came to bed with me last night and we fell asleep with him under my arm  :Luv:

He's being a right mummys boy at the moment, I just hope this is not telling me its the end  :(

Last night I was asleep for 7 but Im always praying and hoping for my boy  :Luv:

I did remember him at 8pm last night.....and spent half an hour imagining a well and happy little Ollie.  I will do the same tonight if anyone wants to join me at that time.  He looks such a dear little chap.

Post by: CC & The Pussycat Guys & Dolls on April 30, 2009, 21:50:02 PM
 :thanks: everyone   :grouphug:

This is what Ollie has..... Plasmacytic Stomatitis  :-: going to read up on it now  ;)

The vet said its not as bad as having cancer (obviously) but its a bad thing to have. So the treatment is going to be agressive steriods  :scared: I think they mean steriods in high doses. Anything is better than being dead I suppose  :shy:

I cant believe it, Ive been really worried all week, and cant thank everyone enough for wishing my wee man well  :)

 :thanks:

I think the next step is going to have the rest of his teeth out.

That is what Schui had CC! (poor Ollie, but it could have been worse) I used to have to scrape the tartar off his every day  he eventually had all his teeth out and was much better but he was on permanent steroids for his nasal problem so that probably helped his gums too.  Has Ollie got many fangs teeth  ;)

Thanks all

Were going to the V.E.T.S tomorrow so will see what they say (I cant even think that word without Ollie knowing, I think he must be telepathic  :evillaugh: )

If he's going to have to be on the jabs for steroids do you think its possible I could give them myself? Would the vets let me?

This would be better than going to the vets every 10 days and also avoid the consult fee. I dont really understand why Im being charged a consult fee when he's only getting his meds.  :tired:

Ollie's vet is good tho and doesn't usually charge me a consult fee, as he says its an ongoing thing  :sneaky: But the rest of the vets do and when I need Ollie's vet, he is never there  :tired:
Title: Re: Ollie Bonga- My little Soldier
Post by: Janeyk on May 05, 2009, 13:34:26 PM
If your favourite vet doesn't charge then surely the rest won't? especially as it's ongoing if you suspect a problem I'd get your vet to ok it with the rest CC.
Title: Re: Ollie Bonga- My little Soldier
Post by: CC & The Pussycat Guys & Dolls on May 05, 2009, 14:04:07 PM
Yeah its getting a pain the bottom lately as he's there so often  :tired: I just barely have the money for his treatment never mind £20 on top, especially as they are not telling me anything new  >:(

And to be honest, I dont know how this bill is so big  He only had a biopsy and 3 injections, which the injections could of amounted to £60 with the consult, but it was an after surgery check so that should of been no consult fee  :shify: Humm Im going to have to ask them about that.

How much does a biopsy cost?  :-:

my vets are very hit or miss on the follow up fees, the only one who ever seems to let me off is one of the partners
Title: Re: Ollie Bonga- My little Soldier
Post by: CC & The Pussycat Guys & Dolls on May 05, 2009, 14:20:26 PM
Well its getting to a stage that I have to phone to see when Peter is on, and if he's not there I either have to wait or get blooming charged £20  >:( But even Peter has started charging me for a half consult  :tired:
Title: Re: Ollie Bonga- My little Soldier
Post by: Dawn F on May 05, 2009, 14:28:12 PM
mine charge £28 for the first, then £22 (I think) then £18 - its bad I think because if they say pop back next week for me to see how it is going you can't really say no and it does nothing to encourage people to use vets!
Title: Re: Ollie Bonga- My little Soldier
Post by: CC & The Pussycat Guys & Dolls on May 06, 2009, 13:42:06 PM
Yes I know! As soon as they say come back in xxxx days I think omg another consult fee  :scared:

Im going to have to sort this out with them today cos Im there at least twice a month and thats £40 going down the pan  :(
Title: Re: Ollie Bonga- My little Soldier
Post by: Millys Mum on May 06, 2009, 17:42:24 PM
Millys biopsy cost £600 so dont complain! She had a proper op hence the price but you can see how things add up!
How did your appt go?
