It really is a slow process and suddenly things have improved, its a combination of the body adjusting and the brain relearning and all you can do is just wait. you dont notice the changes back cos so slow and then suddenly you see something.

one way is to keep a daily diary and when you look back you will see that it was gradually happening, you didnt notice but each day or week you wrote it

Those pictures are truly heartwarming, and I do believe that Riley is inching his way back to his old self.   if that means he heals slowly but wholly, then that's definitely worth it.    And he still works a patchwork coat in a very insouciant manner.  Beautiful, lovely boy!  :Luv2:

And Lu - fabulous Lu - laughing a true cat laugh.   :Luv:

It's good to hear that Riley is still moving in the right direction. I know it is slow and frustrating, but every step forward is a good one!  ;D

Agree with Rosella, it does seem like forever before the fur grows back, but suddenly it just seems to appear!  :wow:

Beautiful pic of them together, and hoping Lu has found his old friend again, and will help to bring him all the way home.

It all sounds like very good progress albeit a tad on the slow side for an impatient mum.

Lovely lovely pics Helen  :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2:

Glad things continue to improve for Riley albeit not at the pace you might like.  I remember thinking it was taking far too long for the girls' fur to grow back after their spays and then one day I just realised it had  :wow:

I do hope this will all feel like a bad dream by 2014 and Riley will return to being as like his old self as possible.  Everyone that has had some experience of their cats fitting seem to be of the same opinion in that it really does take some time but I would certainly be impatient in your shoes

 :thanks: all

On advice from the specialist the dosage of the 8 hourly medication was halved over two weeks ago now and thankfully there have been no seizures and there has also been a slight improvement in his subduedness - he was on double the normal dose so halving it has taken it back to a normal dose. He does seem a bit more interested in his surroundings and has even been rolling over for occasional tummy rubs.

Most days I'm just happy that he is home, seizure free and still has a good quality of life but others I do feel sad that the Riley of before seems lost - no playing, no sleeping on the bed, no sleeping with Lu  :(

The vet said about trying to cut out the 8 hourly med completely in a few weeks, from a convenience point of view that would be very welcome as trying to juggle 4 medication times throughout the day is a struggle, especially with working shifts. From what I've read this particular drug doesn't cause massive sedation so I'm not expecting miracles behaviour-change wise but saying that halving the dose seemed to have a positive effect on him so who knows.  Not looking forward to the day it stops though as will be on tenterhooks again  :scared:

His fur seems to be taking an age to grow back, especially on his back legs but that's the least of my worries. Here's a pic from a week or so ago (when we had sunshine!) - it's the closest he's been to snuggling up to Lu like he used to, and one of Lu just because  :Luv:

oh bless his little paws   I agree it is still early days and he's probably still confused and a bit traumatised by it all.  I would guess his confidence will gradually return and he will continue to improve, both physically an in himself

I was thinking the same as Gill, Helen - it's still early days.

After Paddy had his stroke, it took months for him to regain some of the skills he lost, and to regain confidence.   I would say it took a good year before he was back to anything like his "normal" self, although of course there were things he could no longer do - jumping was one of them.  He could only manage small jumps.

He's been through such a lot, bless his paws, and he's doing really well.   :Luv:  If you lift him on to the bed, would he stay there, do you think?

Keeping everything crossed the discussion about the meds is productive, and that if the dose is lowered, all will remain stable.

Helen its still early days yet and the sweizure meds take a long time to get used to............I am sure he will further improve but slowly

I know that Franta who wasnt on any meds and didnt have what Riley has but it took him a long time to get close to normal after every bout of seizures.

He was scared of the stairs and didnt jump up on things as much, in time he would climb up on me and eventually he went cautiously outside.

I think not just the meds but the whole thing is a shock to their little systems.

 :thanks: all

You're right, when things were so bleak for him if I had been told that I could have him back home with no seizures and he would be 75% of his old self I would have snatched your hand off and been absolutely over the moon. I think I just need to focus on the positives instead of what he doesn't do anymore. He is happy and looking back he has vastly improved from when he first came home.

The vet did mention reducing one of the seizure medications a few weeks ago (he is on double the normal dose at the moment) but he wanted to give him a bit more time at home first, will be ringing tomorrow to discuss that but from what I've read I don't think the medication that's potentially going to be reduced is the one causing the main subdued-ness. Would be great if it was. Then there's also the worry that reducing the dose will stop the control that's been achieved over the seizures   :shy:

He's doing OK thanks, no seizures which is obviously the aim and he does have a good quality of life but it's like he's a different cat now. I think subdued would sum it up, some days he's more alert than others and he is definitely vastly improved on how he was when he first came home but I would still say he's only 75% back to normal.

All the things I used to moan about him doing I would love to have him doing again - leaving hairs on the duvet, jumping on the table/work surfaces, yowling his head off whilst racing round the house  :shy:

He's still affectionate but doesn't sleep on my bed anymore or sit on me when I'm on the sofa, and he doesn't cuddle up to Lu anymore either  :shy: Whereas before he would throw himself at the back door at 100 miles an hour he's now quite wary of going outside and stands there with his haunches low to the ground for ages before he'll venture out. He is also quite easily spooked now, before he would run towards a strange noise whereas now he gets momentarily frightened by them. His back legs are still a bit weak/wobbly so he barely jumps anymore. That makes it all sound quite bleak but he is happy, he purrs and enjoys being stroked, grooms himself, eats well - he's just not the Riley he used to be  :shy:
