Sadly MaiTai passed away on Dec 21st. She went out around 5.30 and was found in a neighbour's driveway at around 6. Without an autopsy the vet couldn't give a c.o.d. but did say there was no sign of rta or poison. Needless to say Aileen & family are devastated. RIP beautiful girl.

Well miss MaiTai will be home tonight on house arrest and being fed chicken breast! Aileen will be financially much lighter, but she's thrilled to be getting the baby home

. Ashley (the other cat they are owned by) will be in heaven what with a litter tray and yummy food!

Good news! MaiTai is eating (only when someone is stroking her!) and the vets are happier to say she should pull through :-) They're not sure of the Triaditis now, and say it may be pancreatitis. I don't think she's getting home today, but things are less dire than Monday. Thank you for all your support and please keep sending the vibes! Bronagh.

so sorry to hear this. I've no experience of it but when my year old wegie Karlo was ill last year my vet talked about him possibly developing it in time. Know it is very difficult to get meds right. Hope Maitai is feeling better soon x

Thank you for this. I'll pass all this info onto Aileen. The description of a wet dishcloth Is spot on. MaiTai is normally a typical calico tortie with attitude and seeing her like that was awful. She's only 7, so hopefully age will be on her side.
I'm looking at Denes pet food, but ultimately Aileen will be the one to decide. Although, she would give anything to help the kitty and eat beans herself! Her daughter Iona offered her savings to help too! B

Hi Bronagh.
Sorry to hear about MaiTai, Triaditis is what the vets think my Cora has (I'm the other lady HelenD was talking about), but it is very difficult to diagnose, so I'm surprised your vet has come up with that so quickly. It is basically a liver, pancreas and cholangiohepatitis problem, and the trick is, as someone else said, balancing the meds.
If the liver is affected, the immune system will be low, so that's what the antibiotics are for.
It is horrible and fast, Cora collapsed with it with no warning, and was only given days to live, but that was 15 months ago. The day I collected her from the vet she was like a wet dishcloth.
There are two liver supplements, Hepatosyl and one starting with an L, not sure of it's name. Food-wise, I give Cora the Royal Canin Digest Sensitive and anything else or sensitive tums, same as Helen (thanks Helen), and try to keep Cora's diet as additive free as I can. If you can afford it, go organic.
Good Luck, it does take time with this, if MaiTai is a younger cat, then I think the chances of recover will probably be better.

everyone for all your replies and support. MaiTai has apparently eaten a little more this morning and her temp has reduced to almost normal. Although vet is still testing for anemia which is apparently a complication of the Triaditis.
@Gillian - no previous IBD or anything at all in fact. Very healthy and lively little cat. The vet has done bloods and scanned her, but he felt that the scan was hurting her yesterday and was going to retry today. Poor little MaiTai must be miserable away from her family.
@Gillian - I'm hoping that if and when MaiTai is stabilised, we can get her onto something like the Hills (Denes natural pet care is where I've been looking, and they also have the dandelion + milk thistle) I know Aileen will try everything she can to help her furbaby.
I had never heard of this disease, but it's horrible and so fast. Needless to say, we're all keeping our fingers crossed for the little poppet. Normally when I go to see Aileen, MaiTai sleeps with me. This time, I stayed awake talking to her and petting her all night. I just hope she can pull through and be maintained comfortably for time to come.

seems like a very quick diagnosis of all those problems, presume they have done blood tests? but I would have thought they'd also need to do scans and possibly x-rays, plus poo samples, to get a definitive diagnosis. Was there any history of IBD prior to this episode?

Hills have a pouch food called Gastro-Intestinal and cleared up Lupins tummy problems . I used to buy on internet and its about £31 for 4 x12 pouches with free postage.........will get you the link if you need it. He also had a capsule which half went on food a day.

We never had a diagnosis of his problem but his tummy was highly sensitive to most foods and especially fish, so something diferent to your friends cat.

It seems to be very palatable.

Hi Bronagh,

So sorry to hear about MaiTai! I have heard of Triaditis as it was something our vets thought our cat had at one point.

As far as I know it is something thats recoverable from, and if shes at the vets and being treated then shes in the best place for now.

The antibiotics will probably be to clear up any internal infections (I think normally thats the pancreas/bile duct part I think) and the drip will be to keep her hydrated and make sure the liver is getting flushed through - so to speak!

I cant say about alternative therapies, but our cat is currently on a liver supplement called Hepatosyl, which is meant to help ease the load on the liver and help it recover (the liver can repair itself!). There are a number of these supplements on the market though which I'm sure the vet can probably talk to your friend about, but we found Hepatosyl to be the easiest to administer - its powder in a capsule which can be sprinkled on food, rather than trying to pill her! Both myself and another lady on here have tried another one called Denamarin, but it didnt go down well for either of our cats - but then each cat reacts differently.

If shes been diagnosed with IBD as well (I think theres a blood test that confirms this - turned our our cat didnt have this when she was tested but she does have a sensitive tum) then the vet should be able to provide a special gastro-intestinal food for her too, which should help ease those symptoms.

I think the problem with Triaditis is balancing all the treatments so they dont upset one and other, which can be a little tricky and you do have to be a little careful with supplements and things, I'd always check with the vets before trying anything new, just in case.

I've never even heard of it but just googled and it seems it's cholangiohepatitis, pancreatitis and inflammatory bowel disease occurring at the same time

I really hope your friends cat can pull through, it's amazing how quickly they can go downhill - have everything crossed that she starts to feel better soon

I've flown home to Belfast this week and last night went to stay with my best friend. Her youngest furbaby is 7 and she had wee'd twice in odd places Sat and Sun. Up until late yesterday evening MaiTai seemed lively and ok and we figured we'd take her in first thing today and see what was up. We were thinking kidney infection. . But at bedtime, she had become absolutely lifeless and wouldn't stir. I kept her beside me all night just talking to her. We took her to the vet first thing and she has been kept in. The vet has diagnosed Triaditis and MaiTai is now on a drip, Metacam and some antibiotics. The vet has said he can't guarantee she'll recover but that she had eaten a small amount tonight. It seems unreal that she has gone from nutty tortie to death's door in 24 hours. The vet doesn't provide any alternative therapies, but I know dandelion is helpful with liver problems. Does anyone know of anything else we could do to help this sweet little cat? Bronagh x
