You mix fairy liquid with sugar and that will get rid of it.

Try covering your hands with some oil or something and then adding the mixture.....it works  ;D

reminds me I dont have sugar in house any more so must get a small bag, if they do such things.

When lola gets splodges on her ears i use hibiscrub, not sure how this would work on a whole oily cat tho

I only use Ecover as a washing up liquid and tried it but it didn't dissolve the grease. 
Funnily, the vet did say that Buddie is now smelling lovely of Fairy but I put that down as a generic use of term.  I forgot to ask when I was there.  Will get a bottle of the original stuff with my next shopping.  Thanks all.

Fairy Liquid is the best thing for oil/grease, but make sure it is the 'original' Fairy and NOT any of the anti-bacterial/floral type ones.

I'd have thought Fairy Liquid would be a good start as it would dissolve grease/oil.

Buddie managed to get covered in engine oil in a neighbours garden last Friday.  Luckily I work from home, so noticed it quickly.  I didn't have anything at home that could take the oil off his coat, so I took him straight to the vets to have him cleaned and checked. 
I want to be prepared if something like this happens again in the future and just wanted to ask which shampoo I could buy that actually dissolves the diesel.  I looked on VetUK but all of the ones there seem to be medicated shampoos.
