Not long back from the vet with Archie. He has been quite quiet and there was blood in his poo again this afternoon.
Vet was very good testing sample, temp and feeling Archie's tum.
Archie has had this problem since he was a young cat and is nine now.
His temp was normal and the sample ok. His tum is bloated so it's the irritated bowel again.
Checked with vet and his diet is ok.
At least it has been well over a year since his last do.
Trusting the two injections will do the trick again
-
Fingers crossed the injections do the trick
-
Thank you
-
Hope Archie is better soon
-
Hope Archie improves
-
Many thanks
He is flat out at the moment, very relaxed :)
-
Awww, poor lad :( I hope he is soon back to his usual self
-
Thank you for your kind thoughts  Looking back he has not been himself for a few days now.
He has just been outside chasing a piece of grass with me so think the injections have kicked in ;D
One was an anti inflamatry and the other to settle the bloated tum
-
Very much hoping Archie is feeling very much better this morning Alison :care: :care: :care:
-
Thank you  He is snoozing at the moment but seems to be in better spirits again :)
-
Sending good wishes to Archie
-
:thanks:
-
Gentle snoozles and soothing thoughts from me and Da Boyz. My IBS has played me up sumfink rotten today, so I know how he feels. :shy: :cat rub: :cat rub:
-
hope archie is feeling better, Oscar suffered with blood in poo from time to time, usually after eating grass nobody ever seemed to know why
-
Archie says fanks and is here now to over see my typing.
He is quite loose but that could be the injection but no more blood :)
Thanks Dawn no one seems to really know with Archie either
Archie sends soothing vibes for Aunty Sue
-
Topping up the soothing tummy vibes for our lovely Archie.
-
Fanks Aunty Sue
-
More blood so have to take Archie back to vet at 4.40 :(
-
Alison sorry to hear about poor Archie. I had a dog once with the same sort of problem. I used tree barks powder and it worked like a miracle. Here is the link to it. It's for cats as well.
Julie.

Julie thanks for that link will think about giving the powders a go ;D
-
Hope vet can sort quick
-
Thanks
Just back and Archie is less bloated than Monday.
He has had a Dexafort anti inflame injection which will last a week so hoping it will do the trick. The other injection only lasts 36hrs.
-
Hope it works and Archie will be fine again
-
Thanks Gill, he is flat out now

Could not get onto Purrs first thing :shify:
Archie is much better after he slept off the worst of the injection :)
Hope this does the trick this time
-
I couldn't get into purrs either. Glad Archie is feeling better after his sleep.
Julie.
-
Thanks Julie
Glad it was not only me having probs :)
-
Topping up the Archie vibes.
Think Purrs was down for a while, as I couldnt get in either. :shify:
-
Thanks Sue
Poor Tan has had to deal with lots of connection probs recently
-
I hope Archie is feeling better now
-
   for Archie
Purrs was down from about 11.30 last night
-
Thank you both
Archie is feeling much better this evening and hope we have seen the back of it now.
The vet has made a note that the next time it happens he is given the long lasting anti inflame.
He has not had an episode for a year until this one which is an improvement
-
Glad to hear that Archie seems to be feeling better ;D
-
Thank you very much
Here is Archie, taken five minutes ago
-
That is one very contented looking Archie.
Julie.
-

Archie would like to send you all a big fank you
-
Happy cat :Luv2:
-
Thank you
Oh dear Archie has started sniffling now :( Not sure if it is a reaction to the injection or not.
He is eating and active but keeping an eye on him
-
How is Archie now Alison?
-
:thanks:
Fingers crossed the sniffing has stopped and his tum is settling at last.
I do worry about him as he is younger than Parki yet she seems in better health, generally
-
Glad to hear that Archie seems to be getting better ;D
-
Thank you
-
tiptoeing by to plant a gentle kiss on Archie's head. :care:
-
Fanks Aunty Sue
-
Give Archie a nose tickle from me :Luv2: still sending the get well soon vibes ;)
-
Thank you Stuart as he loves a nose tickle. Archie sends a fanks too :)
-
Lovely boy! Will he accept an ear tickle from a strange woman? ;D
-
A lovely picture of Archie, he looks so content, but I am not sure I could have resisted blowing a raspberry on that gorgeous tum even if it did mean disturbing him :naughty:
-
 :evillaugh:
He does like the occasional tum tickle :evillaugh:
-
Just back from vet as Archie had blood in his poo again this morning. Think I have caught it in time as no obvious inflammation in tum, temp ok too. The vet gave him a good check over and gave him a Dexafort injection which should last 10 days.
So glad the vet has started opening on Sat again
-
Sorry this has started again and never heard of that injection.............hope it works well
-
  for you and Archie
-
Sending a few :care: :care: :care: for your gorgeous lad and a few    for his wurrid mum :(
-
Sorry to hear this Alison :( Hope Archie is OK
-
Thank you all so much was worried sick this morning.
Dexafort is brilliant. Archie was a bit spaced out when I brought him home but has been on the go ever since. Wonder if he could have it orally long term as it really helps.
The vet said it is a strong anti inflam
-
Alison so glad Archie is doing so well. Here is the data sheet for dexafort.
Julie.
http://www.msd-animal-health.co.uk/Products_Public/Dexafort/090_Product_Datasheet.aspx
-
Sending gentle hugs for Archie, and hoping he's feeling much better this morning.
Dexafort maybe not for long term use then, but certainly making a difference at the moment.
-
Many thanks , Archie is so much better now ;D
Thanks for the link, very interesting and not for long term use then :) Shame but there we are
-
But at least you know it works in an emergency. And there might be something safer you could use for long term use your vet knows about.
Julie.
-
That's true Julie :)
-
So pleased Archie is feeing better, guess because its a steroid it cant be used long term but at least you know it works in an emergency ;D ;D
-
Glad Archie is feeling better Alison
-
Thank you
You are right Gill at least there is an effective drug for emergencies :)
-
This must be such a worry for you! I'm glad that Archie has improved with the injection, here's hoping he goes a good long time before any further flare-up.
-
Popping in to give Archie a gentle chin tickle. :cat rub:
-
Thank you
Archie loved the chin tickle and hopes it will be a while before another jab :)
He is full of beans this morning and starving. Guess that is the steroid.
He has had a tiny bit of blood but hoping there will be no more
-
Archie slept most of yesterday and was off his food :( Knew something was brewing and then more blood last night :(
Vet saw him first thing and has given him Dep-medrone which will last six weeks. David the vet seemed very knowledgable about Archie's condition so will see him next time.
If after the six weeks he is ill again within a month he will have to go on a special diet.
Archie must feel more comfortable as he is more active now. It was another anti inflam
-
Poor Archie. What does the diet consist of Alison?
-
Thanks Sheila. I don't know at the moment, should have asked :shy: At the mo he is on Science Plan complete
-
I'm so sorry to hear poor Archie has been unwell again. Things always seem to happen at weekends.
Julie.
-
Poor Archie! I am glad that he seems brighter after his treatment.
-
Thank you
Yes, why does it always happen at the weekend :)
So glad my vet started opening on Sat morning again
-
  for Archie
-
:thanks: from Archie
-
Poor Archie
He might benefit from something like Hills z/d
I am thinking of trying Mosi on an elimination diet but would do a novel single protein diet for him but want to discuss it with vet first.
-
So sorry to hear this Alison.    for you and Archie.
-
Thank you both
Susanne not heard of Hills Z/D will look into that. Hope you have some luck with Mosi
-
Alison, am so sorry to hear this, and wanted to send a gentle ear rub for our lovely Archie.
I wonder if it's worth discussing a raw diet with Archie's vet? Poor little soul.
-
I totally agree Sue. Just google raw diet for IBS cats or something similar. What ever the vet has diagnosed Archie's condition as. Cats were fed by nature thousands of years before man turned all their diseased bad unwanted food into so called pet food for profit instead of binning it. All these terrible conditions, diabetes, cancer IBs etc were hardly known before the fifties when people started to pick up a can instead of the scraps from the butcher. Humans living on junk food become unhealthy. Same with cats.
Julie.
-
Thank you Julie and Sue
Off to google raw diets, sounds good :)
-
Alison you need to be careful. Raw feeding is so simple, but you can read a lot of rubbish about it on the internet. Like every thing else really on the internet. It just boils down to what a cat needs. 80% meat 10% bone 10% organs. half of which has to be liver. Nowadays it is so easy because so many firms now do raw diets for cats. This is a good place to start. They are British and do complete meals, also lots of information and you can phone for good advice.
http://www.naturesmenu.co.uk/advice-centre.aspx
Alfie and my lot use nurturing by nature. I also use another place but these don't give the advice like Nature's menu. I have been raw feeing for 11 years. And I think Alfie's mum has a few years under her belt. It won't harm to at least take a look and have a think about it. The vet doesn't seem to be getting very far. Apart from emergency patch up jobs for now. Maybe raw can help.
Julie.
-
Wow, thanks Julie looked it up and saw it was complicated :-: The link is great and that would be the way to go.
The thing is Parki would have to go raw too as no good having biscuits out. Am sure it would benefit her too and she really loves raw meat
-
Alison that is a great start that Parki likes raw meat. Some cats convert easily. With others it's a struggle. If you do decide to convert it is certainly easy nowadays with access to ready made complete raw meals.
Julie.
-
Thanks, yes the complete meals would be such a help :)
-
None of mine will touch raw..................look at me as if its poison!
Take care Alison and hope Archie stays well.
Animal medicine has improved so much since the 50s and back then they couldnt diagnose all those things that they can now.
-
Thanks Gill. You are right vet science has advanced very quickly, thankgoodness too
-
Poor Archie! I do hope he is feeling better today.
Yes, I feed Alfie and Cleo raw but don't have anything like the experience with it that Julie does. Alfs will eat almost anything but Cleo is a fussy little madam, yet I was surprised at how easily she took to it. It won't hurt to give it a try and see how Atchie does on it.
-
raw sounds like a great idea if Archie likes it. I fed natures menu nuggests and another one (natural instinct I think? still have some in the freezer) to Jaffa and Mosi. Not tried Kito on it yet. Mosi is a bit unsure about raw. Must have another go.
-
Thanks a great help
-
I had to take Archie back to the vet again today as more blood in his poo. He did have another Do a few wks back when Parki had her dental but it cleared.
He has had an injection that will last a week and been given Royal C sensitive biscuits to try and I have a few pouches at home from Parki.
I have to take a sample of his doings in too. The vet will do a colestomy investigation if I want but said it more than likely would be inconclusive.
Poor Archie :( I have to take him back on the 24th to see how he and the diet are going.
Thankfully they both love the biscuits so no probs there.
If this does not work will think about raw
-
Poor Arche
-
So sorry, could it be your guests that have stressed him?
Hope he gets better quick
-
So sorry to hear that Archie is poorly again Alison
-
Thank you all
Gill, it could well have been the visitors that stressed him out :shify:
-
Oh no! Poor Archie and poor you :(
-
Alison, sending lots of soothing vibes for Archie this morning.
-
Sorry to hear that poor Archie is under the weather again Allison   I very much hope he starts feeling a great deal better very soon.
When I was poo collecting in our front garden last week I noticed fresh blood in one of the poos. Suspect Noni as she has had it on and off over the years but no one showing any other signs of discomfort or being off their food. In fact she is constantly starving but she always is so I'm afraid I'm keeping my fingers crossed and ignoring it :-[
-
Thank you
Rosella maybe Noni has a bit of colitis, seems it is quite common    In the past Archie has had a do then it cleared up on it's own
-
Hope Archie is feeling a bit better today
-
Thanks Gill  So far so good.
Will have top give Parki her treats when Archie is sleeping :shify:
Wondering if anyone would put their cat through a Colestomy as not sure what to do after chatting with the vet
-
Is that what the vet's suggested Alison?
-
Only if it could be shown to me that this was really necessary but if its just a guess and a money bumper for ins purposes no I wouldnt.
Also what would be a possible find they would need to tell you.
I am sure they will make the excuse its just to check that nothing nasty is going on!
I refuse all blood tests on cats unless really needed which hardly ever are.
For Misa in the end, well quickly had to agree for them to do the works cos nobody knew what was wrong with him at beginning of year and he couldnt walk or do anything.
-
I think a colostomy would be where they'd remove a section of the bowel Gill, so not something they'd undertake as an exploratory. The only text I could find on it suggests that one of two types of colostomy could be used, but both would leave the cat with complete faecal incontinence. I'm not sure what quality of life that would offer.
-
Oh dear think I have put the wrong word in :-[ So sorry :-[ It is where the vet would put a camera in Archie's bowel and take a biopsy.
He said even if they do this the results would probably be inconclusive so has left it to me to decide. Do not really want to put Archie through this unless I think it would help so now in a quandry.
He did mention a blood test too so take on board what you said Gill as this would cause a lot of distress. Will see what the poo sample shows up first.
He is very sleepy today so would think that is the injection.
He seems to have had one attack after another this year and at the moment 15 yr old Parki is in a better state of health :(
-
colonoscopy I think you mean, where a small camera is inserted into the rectum and then up into the colon. I work for a doctor who does these on humans ;)
-
Can you remind us of Archie's symptoms Alison. As detailed as you can and how frequent they occur and how serious. May be worth reviewing your Purrs posts to remind you?
-
Thanks Heather you are right :shy:
Hi Rosella, not all the time but a day or two before a bout Archie is not himself that is sleepier and quiet. When he has a poo it is loose and there is fresh blood in it usually at the end bit
I usually take him to the vet at this stage as it may clear but comes back again.
He was having two or three bouts a yr until 2015 when over the last few months it seems as soon as the anti inflam wears off it comes back.
Through a bout he goes off his wet food a bit, half a pouch a day. Vet says it is prob as he associates it with the pain :( Otherwise he eats some biscuits.
He rarely has a temp. The vet also feels his tum and cannot feel any growths, however his tum can be bloated
-
Sounds like IBS, not nice.
-
That has been mentioned with colitis :(
-
I have to take a sample of his doings in too. The vet will do a colestomy colonoscopy investigation if I want but said it more than likely would be inconclusive. Poor Archie :( I have to take him back on the 24th to see how he and the diet are going. Thankfully they both love the biscuits so no probs there. If this does not work will think about raw.
I've just been reading through your posts since April Alison and yes I do see that the condition is becoming more frequent. Dare I ask how much of a careful proper try you have given a change of diet? Having a hoard of furry piglets here, I know how difficult it would be to introduce a different feeding regime but we have had to do it to separate our lot so they are fed in 4 different rooms. I just think giving a change of diet a chance is so less invasive to start with?
-
Thanks Rosella
I was given the diet at the vets yesterday so only into second day. Both Parki and Archie like the Royal C sensitive biscuits which is a relief as would be tricky to feed sep. Archie has not requested a half pouch of food yet but when he does I have the Royal C sensitives ones.
I have been giving Parki treats when he is asleep as they are a no no for him now.
He is very sleepy and has been on my bed most of the day, not like him at all :(
You are right and good idea to give this new diet a good go first.
-
Am very much hoping Archie is feeling better this morning alison
-
Thank You Rosella. He has finally got up and is tucking into his RC food. Was really worried about him last night
-
Hope the RC helps
I would not put him thro anything that was likely to be inconclusive tbh, cant see the point.
I may also help you to keep a diary that shows what is happening around Archie in the house that is not the norm to see if stress is playing a part.
-
Thanks Gill, great idea about the diary will do that.
Could well have been the visitors which set this episode off :-:
-
Just back from vet and surprised to find the poo sample shows he has Protozoa Giardia as never heard of it
Matthew says it could cause all the symptoms he has been having.
He has powders for ten days but have to take him back Friday for check up.
If symptoms come back after treatment then Archie does have colitis on top of this
Has anyone else had a cat with this
-
I also have never heard of this but good its been dignosed and hope the treatment goes really well
-
Thanks Gill, still a bit of a shock but so glad too
-
Alison, it's good that you now know what's going on with Archie. Hope the treatment gets him back on track very soon.
-
Thanks Sue, he had the first treatment today in his cod fillet and did not notice :shify: :)
-
Sending lots of   for you and Archie. Is it Panacur he's been given. Bunty and Biggles were suspected of having Giardia when they were younger and presented with blood in their poo so the vet gave them that. I suspect he was right because both got better. ;D Biggles, however, started again with tummy troubles and that time the vet did every test imaginable (including Giardia) and all came back negative so he 's now classed as having a sensitive tummy. Very scientific. :shify:
-
Thank you Carol :hug:That is interesting, I have never heard of it. I remember now the lovely two had blood in their poo.
Poor Biggles  Archie sounds as if he might be the same
Yes it is Panacur
-
Here's hoping the Panacur does the trick and this is the end of the poor boy's problems
-
Thanks Lyn
-
I'm glad you've got a diagnosis Alison. Hope the treatment helps Archie
-
Thank you Allison
-
Hope gorgeous Archie is responding to treatment Alison :care: :care: :care:
-
Thanks Rosella
He has his 4th sachet today and is showing signs of picking up ;D
He is still sleeping much of the time but appeared more alert yesterday ;D
-
Very Glad Archie is showing signs of improvement Alison.
-
Thank you Sue
-
I've also never heard of this.
Great news that he's picking up. Hopefully this means you've finally got to the bottom of it and things will improve for him x
-
Great news Alison ;D ;D
-
Thank you Gill and Nicola
A bit more blood but that is probably the treament :)
-
Fingers crossed that Archie keeps improving
-
Thank you Allison,   he is brighter this afternoon and has been out side a bit ;D
-
Thanks for the update. I am so glad that things are still going in the right direction ;D
-
Thank you, it is a relief
-
I bet it is and well done your vet ;D
keep on improving Archie its making us happy ;D ;D
-
Thanks Gill
Archie says a big thank you too
-
Topping up the Archie vibes this morning.
-
Thank you Sue,
Archie says a big thank you too
-
Just back from the vet and a full analysis of his sample is also showing campylobactor :(
Archie now also has abs for ten days.
He is showing signs of picking up though and hope this will do the trick.
Have to take him back a week Monday
-
Lord, no wonder he's been feeling so poorly Alison. :( :(
Ramping up the soothing and healing tummy vibes for him.
-
Thank you Sue from Archie and I
-
Oh Alison, poor Archie. He will feel soooooooooo much better when that's sorted. I hope he's good at taking tablets. :shify:
Hugs to both of you
-
I dont know what that is either but the vet sounds like he is sorting him out and sending Archie loads of gentle strokes
-
Many thanks Carol and Gill.
Dreading the tablets as he is not good at taking them :shify:
Hopefully these will do the trick :)
-
Poor Archie, he must have been feeling really rough with all this going on! In humans, campy is usually very easily treated but I don't know anything about veterinary medicine I'm afraid.
-
Thanks Lyn. I had never heard of iy before but the vet mentioned that humans can get it
-
Topping up the vibes for Archie and hugs for you Alison
-
Campylobacter is a common cause of food poisoning in humans. Raw chicken is one of the main culprits, in fact at one time it was reckoned that the vast majority of chickens carried campylobacter on their skins and I doubt the situation has changed. It's he main reason why the main supermarkets are now selling cook in the bag chickens so that people are not exposed to the bacteria on their skins, and the recommendation is never to wash a raw chicken because you could spread the bacteria onto the sink and anywhere the water has splashed.
-
Thanks Carol and Allison. Interesting about the bacteria Carol.
I asked the vet where he could of picked it up from, I don't have any sort of chicken in the house, and he asked if Archie hunted. I told him he very occasionally gets a mouse but has not done this for a while.
Hope no one else has fed him but would doubt it as he rarely goes out the garden and is wary of people
-
My goodness never knew any of this!
-
All new to me too!
Poor Archie, he must be feeling so poorly, sending more vibes his way.
At least you've finally got to the bottom of it & hopefully things can only get better now x
-
Thank you
He is much more alert today which makes me see how poorly he has been feeling
-
Here's you helping me and you've got a poorly munchkin at home.
Campylobacter can make humans feel rotten and the antibiotics can make them feel even worse so maybe your Archie is feeling pretty rough, poor wee sausage.
Hope he gets better very soon x
-
Come on Archie you will be feeling good again very soon
-
Thank you Katie and Gill
He finishes his panacur garnules Monday and started 14 days of abs today
I hate giving him tablets poor thing :-:
He has generally been so much more alert this evening. I bought him a flying frenzy from the purrs shop and played with him gently for a few minutes before putting it away. He is now fast asleep again
-
Topping up the healing thoughts for Archie today.
-
Thank you Sue
He is much better today and has not slept as much ;D
-
That sounds good Alison
-
Thanks Gill. He is so much better this afternoon ;D Just realise how poorly he has been, poor lad :(
-
Just topping up the get well vibes for Archie - so pleased that he is finally on the mend at last xxx
-
Happier kitty? Great news. It must be the right antibiotic. ;D
-
Thank you Yvonne and Katy
-
I am sooo glad that Archie is perkier ;D
-
Thank you Lyn
-
Kissy kissy, Archie. :Luv2:
-
Archie says thank you and sends a big cuddle back
-
Well done Archie lad. You were beginning to really worry your ma.
Keep on the road to recovery sweetpea. Don't take anymore detours, ya hear? :care: :care: :care:
-
So glad he has perked up a bit ;D
-
Thank you Rosella and Andrew
Archie has been tearing round this evening and it is a long long time since he last did that ;D
I am beginning to think he may have had this parasite for a few years now :(
He used his litter tray this evening and I cannot remember the last time there was no whiff like now.
It just makes me think how many time are our cats being diagnosed with colitis without testing them thoroughly.
Archie may well have colitis but this in my mind has been troubling him for an age.
Would not want anyone else to go through this
-
So glad to read this Alison    Hope Archie continues to improve.
-
Thank you Allison
-
Sorry forgot to mention on other thread but this is just great news and agree with you about the testing ;D ;D ;D
-
Thanks Gill
-
Alison, I can imagine how much of a relief this is for you and for Archie. Certainly something worth all of us filing away for future reference.  Great to know Archie sounds like he's on top form! ;D
-
Thanks Sue
11 more abs and he is done ;D
-
11 more abs and he is done ;D
Hurrah! I really hope this is the end of it - both both your sakes.
-
:thanks:
-
Yay!!!! :D So nice to read this good news. Nearly there! What a huge relief it must be for you x
-
To have Archie the kitten cat again must be such a relief and so good ;D ;D ;D
-
Popping by to wish Archie good morning from us. :)

Sasa says she was there but you were asleep, she peeked in to check :shify: :shify:
She had to put Lupins walking jacket and lead on cos he was misbehaving and wouldnt come when called! 8)
They couldnt see Archie or get in so they are very disappointed and she said to tell Archie that he is supposed to let them in when they call. Her banana (mobile) couldnt get a signal but she didnt know if he had one
-
Oh no Archie says this is terrible and says come back :hairrasin:
-
Is Archie still doing okay. When I saw there was a post about him I thought there might be a problem. Having disappeared for a while I have lost track.
Julie.
-
Thanks Julie, he is so much better now and will finish abs in a few days.
He has a vets appointment tomorrow to see how his treatment is going :shify:

-
Archie got on well at the vet and has another week of abs to be on the safe side. I have to take him back next Monday with another sample for testing
The last sample test cost £100 but I think the next one will be cheaper :)
He is beginning to be like his old self again, something i have not seen for a long, long time :)
-
That's great news ;D
Sounds like they are being very thorough too.
Must be lovely to have your old cat back! >:( ;D ;D ;D
-
Thanks Katy, the vet has been great ;D
It is wonderful to have the old Archie back again
-
Glad Archie got on okay at the vet. Such a relief for you to have him back to his old self almost.
Julie.
-
Thanks Julie, it is just great  ;D
-
So happy that you have the old Archie back and he must have been feeling very bad before.
I think if the test can prove that the bugs have bgone the cost is worth it
-
Glad things are going well Alison....apart from having to collect the poo sample :evillaugh:
Do you not have insurance?
-
Thanks both, not looking forward to getting the poo sample :evillaugh:
You are right Gill and worth every penny :)
-
So glad he's on the mend! Must be such a weight lifted!
Poo samples, such fun ;D
My vet has said if he needs one from Chester he'll just take a swab as its fresher & guaranteed not to be contaminated.
Beats carrying a cat poo in my handbag ;D
-
Nicola that sounds a good idea, will talk to my vet about it ;D
Not very happy about carting it around in my bag  :evillaugh:
-
Hurrah! for Archie and  for both of you.
-
Thank you Lyn
-
You are more than welcome ;D

Archie discharged, so happy ;D
Just got to take poo sample in to make sure bacteria fully gone.
If it happens again he will be screened right away
