Title: Garcia Jnr and Buster Jnr
Post by: Teresa Pawcats on August 23, 2009, 19:57:12 PM
Todays events are heartbreaking but people need to know what things are really like in rescue

Today Claire came to attend to the cats so that I could have a much needed day out, all cats fed, clean and happy she went home as agreed and when she returned at 2pm, she found a box placed on Busters Bench with 2 tiny kittens inside, she got them to our vets straight away, one kitten was beyond help and had to be pts, the second kitten is very poorly with cat flu and chest infection,he has been given sub q fluids and antibiotics, he is 6 weeks old and weighs just 257grams ; Claire has named him Garcia after her bridge boy Mr. Garcia, the dead one i named Buster Jnr. One thing is certain Garcia Jnr is going to need a lot of help and prayers if he is going to make it as his breathing is very laboured. We are currently syringe feeding him.

As for Claire she is a true hero, today is the first time she has ever had to see a kitten pts and then she had to hold Garcia and listen to his cries while vet injected fluid into him 3 times, it must have been so traumatic for her; I am so lucky to have her and realise that I can never thank her enough for all she does.

As for Garcia Jnr, please remember him in your prayers. Pics show a very much cleaned up kitten.

Ruth - you are so right...when the vet suggested that he put Garcia on the computer as kittenx I felt he needed a name and Garcia seemed perfect for him.  He is a very poorly boy but he is a little figher and has had to endure so much today, including being trapped in a box with his dying sibling.

My utmost respect and admiration goes out to those who work in rescue every day (and not just at weekends like me) as having experienced a PTS for the first time today, it was the hardest thing I have ever had to make a decision on and then watch.  It was the best thing for little Buster Jnr, but at the same time my heart wished for a miracle.  I know the times that T has had to tell me about cats that have been PTS such as Grace and my beautiful Cringle, and while I have been upset, it is nothing to how I would have felt having been there. I now understand the strength it must take - I was in bits at the vets.

Anyway - this thread is all about the handsome and brave Garcia Junior.  Keep fighting little man. Mr Garcia sends you all his strength and courage from the bridge.

Thinking of you tonight little man - keep breathing strong.

Cxx

Still syringe feeding Garcia, stayed up with him through the night in a bid to get that little bit extra in him and make sure his eye was bathed every 3 hours. He is still very poorly and getting food into him is difficult but we are getting enough in. His eye closed after less than 3 hours and when I opened it out popped very warm water and on cleaning it a piece of white  skin like tissue, have changed him to aureomycin this morning.
He is now sleeping on his snugglesafe heat pad.
Heres this mornings pics, I know Claire will be looking out for them.

I have just found this too.  How some people can look themselves in the mirror is beyond my comprehension.  I am so sorry you had to make such a decision, Claire, but glad you were there to take prompt action for both Garcia Jnr and to relieve the suffering of Buster Jnr.

My thoughts are with little Garcia now, and of course with Claire and Teresa.

I am so proud of our brave Garcia, he has managed 2 wee`s in his litter tray today despite being a bag of bones. He has just taken his first feed willingly even though it is still coming from a syringe and he enjoys being combed after each feed when we manage to remove at least 6 fleas, his eye is still very sore but it was a good decision to change to aureomycin which we are applying every 3 hours. Will stay up all night again tonight to ensure continuation of care. His little chest is still very noisy but its early days. I`m sure he would want me to thank you all for your good wishes, one thing is certain Garcia is one very much loved little one who has touched so many hearts and everything possible will be done for him.

Quick update Garcia is still doing ok but I am taking him to vet for recheck at 11am nothing to panic about, he has eaten fairly well and produced a poo smaller than a peanut; removed 4 dead fleas at 3am and found 1 more dead one this morning, he`s curled up on his snugglesafe sleeping at present (wish I was). Will update later today.

Generally the news is good, Garcia`s weight has increased from 227grams on Sunday to 280grams today; the eye as I expected is a worry, the white tissue that keeps coming away is from third eyelid and inside his eyelids Andy says as long as I maintain the 3 hourly care it should be ok,he was pleased I had changed to aureomycin,  the danger is if the eyelid seals itself to the eye. Andy is doing a home visit tomorrow to do lots of vaccinations so he will look again then. He has had another antibiotic injection as well as a big lunch, still syringe fed though.
Andy is in agreement with me Garcia is no more than 5weeks old. So thats it for now Garcia Junior is a star.

Hi T

So glad that Andy has had a chance to look at him, but I know the eye is a worry.

Sending lots of cuddles his way and I know Mr Garcia will be watching out for him from the bridge.

I have been looking at pictures of my Garcia today and I can see why I thought of him when the vet asked me for a name.

Added a picture of my big man to show Garcia Jnr what a big boy he has to grow into.

Keep fighting hard and eating lots.

Cracker is sons dog, and lives here, he is a 14year old staffie that son rescued from a life of fighting  in Liverpool  over 12 years ago,he still bears the scars, but he has now been well trained and loves the cats, indeed little Garcia loves him, one pic Garcia looks like he is hissing but no he was waa waa are you my mum to the dog. i must admit to keeping quiet about a lot of animals dont always find time to post but we also have 2 terrapins here kept well away from me and cats.

Garcia is still doing ok got to do his feed in a minute, still only taking from a syringe, hes a clever boy and using litter tray for both ends now but not yet mastered the art of washing himself.

Cracker is a cracker  :Luv: Lu and Riley were raised with dogs in their foster home and although they haven't seen a real life one since they were babies my neighbour has four dogs and the boys often peer through the gap in the fence and stare at them, they don't seem in the least bit bothered by them.  When the dogs first get let out into the garden they normally bark in excitement and the boys don't even flinch - even Lu who is scared of other noises like the ironing board being put up!

Sending top up kisses to baby Garcia :care:

Oh wow! Fabby pics... I love to see cats with dogs as we have a dog too and the cats adore him! Its brilliant knowing that his life has been turned around full circle as most dogs that are taught to fight its so hard to get out of their system... So "Well Done" to your son... It must run in the family!  ;)

Now for Garcia Jnr... Little steps forward, non backwards... He is on the forever path! Mumpty strikes again!  :Luv:

Andy vet has been and rechecked Garcia, the infection is now all upper respitory and his lungs are clear such a huge relief, he is happy that we are keeping ontop of his eye, we are to keep him on antibiotics for at least another week and continue the 3 hourly eyecare day and night.he also said it was lovely to see our little boy rolling around playing with his little mouse. The clever boy even went to his tray to show the vet that he can piddle all by himself. So tired but so very relieved that progress is being made.

Just put the wee Garcia on his snugglesafe till next feed at 12, he is still only taking from a syringe but we dont mind because he`s taking enough. He did 3 huge sneezes last feed and for once in my life I am happy to hear a kitten sneeze, it means the sinus is finally unblocking which should help his eye as pressure is relieved, might even stop him snorting.
Last night we got him a girlfriend Pinkymoo in total she is about 6inches from head to toe so should give you an idea of how tiny Garcia is, Pinkymoo was selling her body on Morrisons shelves for 83p and she`s lovely and soft so we thought Purr fect
Anyway heres this mornings pics ( I know Aunty Claire will worry if I dont post them)
First pic shows just how swollen his eye is but I am ever hopeful we are winning the battle.

Garcia sends his love and Thanks to everyone for such lovely get well vibes

And Aunty Ruth can only say that had Aunty T not been around, little Garcia would have come back to London in her pocket  :naughty:

This little baby has to be the most adorable little soul I have ever had the pleasure to meet. I know I've said that in the past about all the ickle ones at Paws Inn I have met in the past years, but I have never had such love from a teeny baby like this.

Garcia's little nose is so adorable, especially when he sneezes.  He seems to be surprised each time it happens  :Luv: Those two little flecks on his head are just  :Luv2: and for a little tyke he has sharp teeth! He only nibbled on my fingers but that's ok.

You had to see it to believe it. Garcia went from being a nearly lifeless little man to a trapeze artist. He was climbing up his pen, diving for his toys and so full of confidence.

Aunty Ruth is in love :catluv:

Aunty T does the best work I have ever seen. The woman is a miracle maker and one I count my lucky stars to be able to call my friend.

Garcia has been to vets this morning as I have been a tad concerned about his eye; although progress has been made and his eye opens wider the swelling inside is not really reducing noticeably. Poor boy screamed when Andy shone light inside, good thing is no ulcers, Andy has now added Predsol drops to his treatment but has warned I need to watch him like a hawk because the drops could cause eye to ulcerate. He still has infection in lung though not as bad as previously and Andy thinks it may be he is just not strong enough to fight the virus off just yet particularly if its something like chlamydia. He is to stay on antibiotics for another week.
The good news is his weight is now 460grams which is more than double the 227 grams of 12 days ago and he is happy and bright.
So we continue with cautious optimism.

It does sound like that to me that maybe his body is still not fighting things off and why his eye is healing slowly.  Good news though that his weight is increasing and that is in his favour to help his recovery, hopefully the meds will help him too and he will soon be fighting fit   he is a little darling   :Luv2:

Pleased he's put a good amount of weight on, I'm sure that will  help him overall to get stronger, and hopefully help his immune system kick into action.

Hope the new drops help his eye

Garcia Junior is being spolit today!  With a move around at the inn....Hercules and Hester have been moved into the summer house as they are now ready for homing and confident.  This meant that Garcia could be upgraded to a penthouse apartment!!

His new pad has a bigger toilet, more room to play and a swanky kingsize heated bed! Plus......his own personal climbing frame!

These were his first steps on the scratching post!!  How cute is he!!!

Another vet check this morning and his chest is almost clear now, Andy pleased with his eye but has considered surgery to remove a small lump, trouble is ,the lump is a reaction to something and by removing it we could open up a barrel of worms causing further reaction so we decided to continue treating as is for now and see how things go and if necessary resort to surgery in the future.
We took 3 tiny kittens to vet also, the smallest was 297 grams and minute, Garcia was 227grams 2 weeks ago and now hes a giant until now I didnt realise just how big is is.

Afraid Garcia has had a relapse, rushed him to vets at 9am with temp over 104,he doesnt want his food which is unheard of, hes had metacam injection to hopefully bring down temp and will try him with food again at 12. He was playing with me happily last night without a care in the world, this has happened so suddenly and both vet and I very concerned.

Our boy has eaten a huge tea, nibbled my fingers and played, you wouldnt know he had been so ill this morning. I couldnt say anything this morning because I didnt want to panic his Aunty Claire but Andy was gravely concerned and had told me that unless metacam kicked in and I could get him to eat it was pts this afternoon, so as you can imagine I have been out of my mind with worry, I asked God for 4 little miracles this morning as I have also been fighting for 3 other tiny flu ridden babies with dreadful tummies, I know its early days but I feel all 4 have improved during the day and my prayers are being answered.
Meanwhile the sleeping Garcia sends all his Aunties thanks and

Garcia is happy, has been playing and is eating this morning, spoke to Andy vet on phone this morning and he is amazed Garcia pulled through. Andy has been convinced that Garcia may have a compromised immune system that has caused the lack of healing in his eye, yesterday he was even more certain, Garcia cant have blood tests yet because it could weaken him further.
He sends his love and thanks to everyone and said to tell you he is now dreaming of having his first girlfriend when he is all grown up

Garcia as bright as a star this morning and eaten well but I fear he will be up and down for a day or two at least.

Oh no - I do hope that the Metacam helps and that the underlying cause can be identified sooner rather than later.

Thinking of you both, Teresa

I am afraid that I have identified the cause of his illness and it is MY FAULT, I have 3 tiny kittens with Flu and a very nasty tummy parasite, despite isolation in seperate rooms I have carried the tummy parasite to Garcia. We are waiting for results of faeces samples to identify the parasite but have a good idea what it is, so kittens including Garcia are now on medication in anticipation of it being this particular parasite, the parasite is so nasty poor Lovealot was passing more blood than poop yesterday.Garcia began to pass small amounts of blood last night; hopefully I will get them all through this; meanwhile I realise that I have caused  little  Garcia  to become so ill after all he has been through and I am feeling distraught and very guilty as there is no excuse.

Teresa, it's easier to do nothing and let opportunities to do good pass by, than to involve yourself heart and soul and make a rare mistake.  You make a real difference to hundreds of cats and kittens that come into your care.  You let not one of them pass without caring for them with all your love and strength.  I can't see any reason for guilt, but I see a lot of reasons to give you a hug.

T you take serious measures with cross infection,    I know I have seen it first hand when you had Hercules and Hester in a seperate room,  after you had attendned to them you went and had a bath and changed all of your clothes before you would touch any of the other cats,   dont blame yourself,  you will get them all through this

These parasites are highly adapted over many millennia to transmit betwen individuals despite all our efforts.  Look at Heston Blumenthal, whose standards of hygiene are apparently almost as high as yours, Teresa

You simply mustn't give yourself grief over this Teresa.  D'ya hear?

You are a very sensible lady and I just know that your head will be telling you that things like this will inevitably happen on occasion despite all the precautions you take.  If your heart is telling you different, it's wrong and you just cannot afford the time and emotional upset that guilt causes.  Your wards are so very very lucky to have you looking after them.  Garcia would be so upset if he knew you were feeling guilty when he is so very grateful for all you have done for him

Yes And I gave him a nasty parasite which will haunt me forever.
20 years ago I was bottlefeeding 3 kittens Faith , Hope and Charity, someone brought a minute scrap to the door Tiny Tim, inexperience led me to put Tiny Tim in with my girls , Tiny Tim carried a virus and I lost him , I also lost Charity 4 days later,to this day it still haunts me I cost Charity her life; perhaps people will understand why I go on about isolation, I learnt from that terrible mistake and poor Garcia should not have this awful thing now.

Life can be cruel and inexperience may have led you to lose Charity and Tiny Tim all those years ago but think of all the little ones who now have good lives because of you and the love and help you bestowed on them without thought to your own wellbeing :wow: as for little Garcia and the Sir Lots they are testament to your dedication, Garcia now looks wonderful and im sure the others will soon follow and blossom in your care

You will get Garcia through this sweetie, you can never 100% isolate I'm sure, and this is just one of those unfortunate instances, not anyone's fault, definitely NOT your fault.

If you had not taken these babes on they would not have a chance in the first place, you make such an amazing difference to all of these babies, please do not give yourself a hard time

Aunty Claire came last night to give me some much needed support and of course to give Garcia his cuddles; she gave him his 10pm meal to give me a rest and I gave him his meds afterwards; Claire was thoroughly enjoying cuddling him until the medication which causes profuse salivation caused him to send projectile vomit all over her, how lucky was I to escape that  he has never been sick before. I left fresh food in his pen last night and he had eaten every scrap by 5 this morning and he seems really bright. He bit my finger this morning good and deep and it wouldnt stop bleeding, think maybe he is a monster disguised as an angel  Anyway Aunty Claire will be back later today for more cuddles and anything Garcia may throw at her thats after she`s done cash/carry run with OH so I can stay here with little ones.

Helen you would need a video of epic proportions if i posted all of our rescues on here, most of them are never mentioned.

Those faint horns will have disappeared by his 1st Birthday our Garcia will be a pure white cat and angelic. I have had words with him this afternoon and told him its time he grew up a bit, I have been mollycoddling him and letting him sit on my lap to feed which takes at least 20 minutes, just put dish of food in his pen and all gone in less than 10 minutes, ever felt like you`ve been had
Also cut down eye treatment from 4 hourly to 3 times daily as it is looking good.

Well, I have been with the GORGEOUS Garcia this morning and he is definitely growing up.......he is now 748 gms which is over 3 times his weight when he came in!

He is a real little devil and loves chewing you to bits.....I have been trying to teach him, but he just wont listen!

Anyway - took some cute photos that I thought you might like.

You can see what a wonderful job T is doing on his eye - it is still not 100% but so much improved from how it was.

I am still in luuurvvvee!

Oh our little Snowball, mumty did'nt forget you it was Mr Flea she forgot about....As you know there's been loads of new little babies at the Inn and they were very poorly...I think you remember cos you caught a touch and it made you poorly for a while.... think this did scare Mumty, she was very sad you know....

So glad Aunty Claire gave you a visit...I think she wants you in her pocket but forgot her coat that day!  :sneaky:

You be well GJ and do forgive Mumty....she has a lot of babies crying out for her attention....just remember you will always be special!  :Luv2:

In truth new ones didnt have fleas, and all other arrivals went into pens so havent been in house.
Because of the medication Garcia and Siralots have been on we have been unable to use any form of chemical to flea treat. When Garcia first came his little body had wounds from the sub q fluids so frontline spray was not an option, he was too small for stronghold hence the 1 third dose. So in truth Garcia is living in a flea pit in my front room   Isolation is more important than spraying the carpet so little fleasies can party a while longer esp. now Garcia is treated properly, they can bite me instead

I'm sure they'll get on just fine - Tachi is black and white, Vader is black so now you have the missing piece of the puzzle with Garcia being all white! I applied the same logic when I was dreaming of adopting him - Riley has a black nose, Lu has a purple nose so all I needed to complete the set was a pink nose!  :naughty:

Will he be getting a new Star Wars themed name for his new home? Can't wait to see pics of them all when he's settled in  :Luv2:

Someone pointed out to me that we'll have the lolcat trinity! Basement Cat (Vader), Purgatory Cat (Tachi) and Celling Cat (Garcia).

We have been talking about this, but naming him R2D2 seems like animal cruelty!!  :evillaugh:

Hello!

Well the big day finally arrived. Due to car/family issues we were an hour late picking him up!   :-[ Sorry again T!

So far he has had his tea and used his tray without complications! He's briefly met Tachi and Vader.  Vader wasn't too impressed and made a few hissy noises, but so far Tachi and him have had a good sniff and seem ok together. We are going to take things slowly with them all.

As some of you may have guessed, we have decided to change his name, just to make him part of our family. We are going to call him Akamaru.

Here are a couple of piccies. I haven't taken many so far as I don't want to spook him out too much. Sorry they are a bit rubbish (from a phone camera!).  :P

Here are a couple from when we went to visit him the other week too!

Well it's pronounced ac-a-mar-roo (sort of)! It's from Naruto (a Japanese cartoon - Craig and I are big kids  :P)

He is currently attacking his cat cube,  :evillaugh: which is a welcome change from Tachi's tail.
