Bless him, he is certainly one handsome dude. My old boy hated the antepsin. I used to feed him little and often so his tummy was never too empty through the night. Might be an idea to feed him before you go to bed. The slippery elm bark is a good one, as Tiggy's mum has said.
Just a thought about his loud meowing, has he had his blood pressure taken at all? His loud meowing and sleeping in dark corners may be because he has a banging headache due to high blood pressure.

Glad to hear Sooty is feeling perky

I have started to mix Slippery Elm Bark which is a powder into a little Beef sandwich paste and then a little water to make it even more juicy. I think sandwich paste would work well with liquid and powder so may be worth giving it a go, it's really strong smelling so hides any nasty tastes well.

The only thing you need to make sure is that it doesn't contain garlic or onions as many do, I got Asda's own Beef one (not the value or posh range as they both had onion/garlic but their mid range one). Looked at nearly all the pastes and most of them had onion/garlic in so do check the ingredients if you don't have an Asda near you.

Thanks all! Well the old fella is doing remarkably well! The vet gave me some stuff called Antepsin to give him in the evenings, because he is vomiting overnight when he has an empty stomach, and he hasn't vomited since. He is also a lot more cheery during the day, so maybe he's had a bit of a tummy irritation which this seems to have settled down?

He absolutely HATES the taste though, has anyone got any bright ideas as to how to make it more palatable? Even I think it stinks (smells quite aniseedy to me) I even thought about making up a tiny drop of gravy and mixing that in with it??

I'll keep you all posted on the old fella's progress, and I know that time is starting to run short, but I'm really pleased to see how much perkier he is all of a sudden

Just got back, and he's still with us, for now. He's now got some antepsin because he has been vomiting during the night, so she suspects that his stomach may be irritated when it's empty, and just see how that goes. She says he's not jaundiced or anything like that, but the lump on his liver is a little tender. She did specifically say that she doesn't think it's time to say goodbye yet, although we are definitely heading in that direction.

So for now we just have to see how he goes

I've taken the afternoon off so I can take Sooty back to the vets, he's really not been himself the past few days, it could be something quite innocent of course, but I have a sneaky suspicion that it's his liver starting to fail. He is still ok, eating well and mooching around as normal, but his eyes just look a little more glazed and vacant, and he isn' quite as as 'clingy' as normal.

I have no idea what the vet is going to say, but I think I have a good idea

I hope Sooty can have a few more comfortable months with you. My heart really does go out to you at such a difficult time. Sometimes with liver problems you can get associated neurological problems so this could be something to do with him howling outside but i wish him well.

I'm so glad that he found you. I honestly find that every day with a cat or cats is so precious and often magical regardless of their health.

Thanks everyone, the old boy Sooty seems fine today, he's been on my lap for the past couple of hours...I'm absolutely busting for a wee and to get another glass of wine

He is over 19 now so doing well, I have had him about 12 years,

I nicked him from the neighbours

They bought a dog and the poor old fellow wouldn't go in the house any more, so they fed him on the doorstep and he lived outdoors. More often than not he caught his own dinner and they only saw him every few weeks. Over a period of time he sort of 'moved in' to ours (in spite of my parents' protests!) then eventually they came over with some tins of food and said 'we haven't seen him for 6 weeks, you might as well have him'. A couple of years later I moved out and brought him with me! I've had him for longer than I've had my hubby, I'm sure you can guess what the pecking order in our house is

Anyway, thank you for your kind thoughts, I know we are down to the closing period, although my vet did rather optimistically give me 2 months worth of tablets! She goes on maternity leave in 3 weeks time which is a real shame as when the time comes, I would have wanted her to help him away, but she won't be there. But for now I will just enjoy each day and see how we go.

Sooty is very handsome and I am sorry that he is getting to the end of his life. A very sad time when you are just waiting and watching them slowly fade. Hope that he still has some happy times left.

Sorry to hear that fluffybunny, it's so sad knowing that one day we will lose our loved ones and you suddenly realise that day is drawing closer. It doesn't make it any easier to bare knowing that they had a long and happy life either, like Lynn says you hope for a miracle for them to go on forever.

Really hope you and Sooty have some quality time left together.

mm yes its very hard, i let my sooty go on to long in heinsight but you hope for a miracle.

Hi Lynne - on the whole no, he seems quite happy, although there are a few signs starting to creep in. He had a dental back in October and has been much happier since then (even enjoying chin rubs which he hated before when his mouth obviously hurt) but over the past few weeks he has been going out into the garden and miaowing in that loud cat howl-miaow that they do, for no obvious reason; he has also started sleeping on the floor by the bed in a dark corner. 95% of the time he seems content, but you know your own animals don't you, and I suspect that we will have to keep a very very close eye on him from now on

Knowing when to make that final decision is so difficult isn't it.

Been back to the vets today as the old boy has been vomiting again, and the vet said that she can see he has deteriorated since she last saw him on the 19th Dec and that the lump on his liver feels bigger

He is still ok in himself but I can see he is weaker and a bit more clumsy. We have upped his steroid dose but I have a feeling this may be the beginning of the end for the old fella
