Title: New around here :)
Post by: chellejw on September 07, 2010, 12:11:55 PM
Hi

I currently have 4 guinea pigs but am hoping to adopt 2 kittens soon.
There are plenty in the free ads etc but I'd prefer to adopt ideally, although with children it might not be possible  :(

Just having a little nosey around at the moment xx

Hi Chelle - welcome to purrs!  :welcome:

What sort of guinea pigs have you?  Are they long or short haired?

Can't see there should be any insurmountable difficulties adopting two cats if you have children (unless you mean you're not sure the children and the cats would be a workable combination for you personally?)

Might be a good idea to have a chat to your local rescue or CP branch for furterh advice, and they can help you with your decision.  Meanwhile, there are lots of lovely puds and peeps on here who will also be happy to help out with advice or practical suggestions.  Enjoy having a wander round, and hope to hearfrom you again soon.   :)

I have 1 short haired (sow) and 3 rough haired (1 sow and 2 boars)
The 3 rough haired piggies are brothers and sister, the brothers live together in one cage and the sister lives with the short haired older girl whose cage mate died :(

Thanks everyone for the welcomes :)
 :thanks:

 :welcome: to Purrs   ;D

Glad you've found us, I'm sure you'll enjoy it here.  It really is a very friendly forum with lots of friendly helpful advice, if ever needed, and of course lots of fun.

I do feel it my public duty to warn you though that it can be a teensy bit addictive  You have been warned  :evillaugh:

Here's a link to UK wide rescues, just click on the part of the map closest to you and it gives you details of all the rescues nearby. Hope you find the perfect two bundles of joy to add to your family  :)

Seriously though chelle, there are other wiser heads than me who can give practical advice on it, but I find that there will always be one or two who you just feel drawn to for some inexplicable reason.

Try and pick kittens that are confident, alert and interested in  their surroundings.  Ask lots of questions - how do they interact with other cats or littermates, people, children or dogs (if known), what do they currently eat, whether or not they will be vaccinated, wormed, neutered and micro-chipped before being re-homed, that sort of thing.  Consider whether they're short haired, semi long haired or long haired, as long haired cats will need a regular grooming regime.

Don't allow yourself to be bullied or cozened into making a choice you don't feel comfortable about, and ask if you can handle the kittens you may be genuinely  interested in (most rescues will be delighted to let you handle them, provided they aren't in isolation pens or suffering from any behavioural problems).

Above all, have fun!
