Vet's just been on the phone and an old lady has left her diabetic cat there, wanting her to be put to sleep. Since she's been diagnosed with Diabetes, she's not really made the effort to get her stabilised so Sean has asked her permission to see if he could try and rehome her. She's approx 16/17 years old and will need insulin injections and her diet sorting. Sean said she's a really sweet cat and she's ginger so it could possibly be a he :)
She's being kept in the surgery at the moment but they can't keep her indefinitely, if anyone is interested in giving this old timer a home, could they please contact me asap.
-
Aaaah, for shame! I already have one little junkie so couldn't afford another. Good luck finding a loving home for this little one.
-
Can you not try 9Lives in London. We managed to get Dopey in there a few months back with a similar condition, he was also on the verge of being PTS. Not sure where you are, but you never know.
-
St Francis in Derby?
-
Aww, I do hope she gets a really lovely home poor thing :(\ (fingers crossed for her - you know me and oldies)
-
London's too far really, I'm in North Wales so it's about 4 hours away, and I will probably end up having to take her to her destination if I get her in somewhere. Derby is a possibility but if I can get somewhere nearer for her, that would be great. Angie, have you got St Francis's number please, I may give them a ring as a last option.........has anyone been there or taken cats there?
-
I could provide B&B in the Midlands & transport onto London if neccessary.
I would point out that I have had no experience of diabetic cats though.
-
Thanks Jasmine, I've just looked at their website and it sounds fab........although a good distance away, it's great that they are not caged and are homed with carers. I will see if I can get someone nearer to take her in, if not 9 lives would be a good option.
-
Jasmine, neither had I until one of mine was diagnosed! You learn how to give injections quick smart, I can tell you. It's definately worth it, though.
-
i hope this cat gets a home soon, i am diabetic so i know how it feels, its not fair to put it down, my husband would not put me to sleep :(
-
What's happening with this puss! Any news anybody!
-
Sadly no interest up to now :(
-
Still no luck with this little sweetheart............Sean phoned me today so I've asked him to give me a couple more days to try and find somewhere.
-
I'm willing to pay for the insulin if someone can foster. Can't promise to pay all vet bills as they might amount to lots of money and sadly I don't have that, but I guess if Sean's not too expensive I may be able to do more than the insulin.
I can also help with advice (via telephone and email) if someone's taking him/her in who hasn't had a diabetic cat before as it's one area I do have experience with...
-
It won't be PTS, will it?
-
Sadly yes :'(
-
Claire, that's really lovely of you........I'm sure I can sort something out with Sean re the Insulin, they would rather find a home for her than pts.
-
Can we get a photo or something? With Dopey we got the vets permission and put details on the Cat Chat first homing page that gets viewed loads. It worked for Dopey is it not worth a try with this one?
Mandy of CC has to get permission from the vets but otehr then that it was pretty straighforward.
Just dont want to give up on this one yet!
-
Is it not possible to have the story put in the local paper?
-
http://pet-rescue.org.uk/
Also try this website, they have a urgent situation thread!
-
Getting a photo, won't be a problem.........I may try and get down there later to get one, if not tomorrow, it's not that I'm giving up, I haven't got time on my side. I've left a message with 9lives as well........a foster home would be better than being put in a rescue.
-
Sean's just attempting to send me a piccie on my phone......not sure if it will work or not :-:
-
Here's a pic of the poor babe :'(

I have emailed Mandy CC aksing her to put details on CC Top Cat page.
I wish I could do more.

-
Thanks Sharon  If someone can take him on, pending homecheck, I'm sure something can be sorted out to get him there........he looks such a babe.
-
He looks like a cat that's had a few too many bad days in a row :Luv: I really hope he is homed soon.
-
Poor babe........he's got one of those mushes where you just want to give him a big cuddle.......fingers crossed for this little guy :please:
-
Some good news on this little man, my friend has just phoned me and her friend has offered to take him on :yesss:
Claire, if your offer of some insulin is still going, I would really appreciate it :thanks:
-
Brilliant news
-
The good news is she doesn't live too far away.......between Liverpool and Preston, have to speak to Sean now about picking him up. Up to now, it looks like it will Sunday evening or Tuesday.
-
Glad to hear she's going somewhere safe. Have to admit, really wanted to take her on; mainly due to the fact that her having diabetes was such a lame reason for giving her up. My tom wakes me up for his jab every morning and it's quite tiring,(he picks the time!)but it's also really rewarding when he perks up after his insulin. :)
-
i am so glad to hear this Dawn, I felt a bit guilty at saying no.
-
I felt guilty as well Des but I know I couldn't inject cats and I have enough to do......it wouldn't have been fair on the cat. Where he's going, the lady is used to oldies and she's just lost her last cat due to old age, I'm sure he'll be fine :)
-
As I said to you, I dont think I could have either. I am glad that he is going to a wonderful home, the little love certainly deserves it.
-
I didn't think I'd be able to give my cat injections; I cried when he was diagnosed with diabetes as I have a fear of medical needles! But he's so well behaved when he has his jab that it's actually just become part of the routine now.
Glad he/she has got a lovely new home. :)
-
I know if one of mine was diagnosed as having Diabetes, I could cope with it........I hate needles but if I had to inject, I'm sure I'll be able to but it's not a cat I would take on without seriously considering the implications first. A few years ago before I started doing rescue, I did get a ginger cat from our local rescue, he was really poorly and I had him in the vets the first night as he went into a Diabetic coma. I didn't know he had Diabetes and nor did the rescue, sadly he was too far gone and died :'( I was prepared at the time to learn how to inject but only because I had taken him on and if he had survived, I didn't want him going back to the rescue.
-
Yes of course it is. Email me and let me know what I should do.
-
Pleased to hear the good news!

Thanks Claire, you're a hun, xxx

I didn't think I'd be able to give my cat injections
I can't but my husband does that sort of thing, i just interfere supervise
-
Am so pleased to hear that this poor babe has found a good home to go to. xxx
-
I have been reading the thread on this one and keeping my fingers crossed, such good news, really pleased that the puss will be in a good home very soon.
Incidentally, what is the cat called? It has been referred to "he" "she" "puss" the Diabetic cat and the ginger cat but presumably this moggy does have a name?
-
Hi Dawn,
That sounded promising - is the home with your friends friend definite? We've put him on Top Cats as urgent, but if he's definitely sorted will take him off.
Good news if that's certain!!!
love

The cat is called Felix :Luv: Gemini, the home I had lined up was a definite one but the lady wasn't used to injecting although her vet said he would teach her. I had another email this morning off another lady who has 2 diabetic cats already and she also definitely wants him. I felt awful letting the first lady down but had a chat with my friend and it's been decided it's in Felix's best interest to go to the 2nd lady, but if things goes pear shape, the offer of a home is still there ;D Thanks guys for thinking of this little one........his prayers have certainly been answered, since coming in I've had 2 more emails offering this little guy a home

Hello Dawn what fab news!
Anyone who wants to adopt a diabetic cat, can y ou please tell them about the one CP in Downham Market have, He has been waiting for a home since Feb this year. Maybe we can saves the two of them. All the best for Felix and thanks Gemini for acting so quickly for this one.
-
Thanks Sharon  Where is Downham Market :Dont know: and how old is the cat?
-
This is all I know. Downham market is Norfolk way, they are listed on CC.
He is a CP shelter care there.

We have an 8 year old male neutered tabby diabetic boy that we’ve had since the beginning of April that we’re having difficulty finding a home for. He is a dear boy, not really keen on other cats, but will tolerate them. He was nicely stabilised a little while ago, but is now having to have regular checks again. Do you know anyone that might be suitable? A nurse? Or someone that’s taken a diabetic cat previously?

To be purrfectly honest anyone with an ounce of sense (that would normally rule me out) can very quickly learn what to do. I had never had a diabetic cat, we were told what to do once and it was no problem.
-
Ela's right, you do learn how to inject quickly once you've been shown. Unless people have a MASSIVE phobia about needles, they really shouldn't be put off by a cat having diabetes. It's not so bad once you (and the cat!) get used to the situation!
