Title: why do cats arch their back ?

does anyone know why a cat arches its back ? mangos been very quite the last couple of days sleeping a lot and acting a little depressed

today she has picked up a little but when she comes to me for a fuss she is arching her back a lot ( not nasty at all ) what does she meen

alot if not most cats will arch their back when you are stroking them,  If a cat seemed off colour/quiet/ not quite right etc i'd suspect there was pain of some kind..that goes for dogs even more so but they can both arch their backs when they are trying to "pull their tummys in" or infact sore in numberous places.
